:welcome: aboard!
Welcome!
It should be noted that the guide only caters for the 32bit client ;)
:welcome: Thanks for helping!
:welcome::up:
It worked fine on my Vista system running 64-bit, is there something else I should do to boost performance or anything?
Thanks for the welcoming. Next step is to get set up on GPUGRID (since I assume WCG doesn't support GPU calculations at this time - right?).
In the next month or two I'll be building a new i7-980X box (assuming parts are available) and I'm sure I'll be coming here for advice on the best way to spend way too much money on it :).
There's also a 64bit client which works about 10% quicker than the one in the guide :)
You can get it here under 64 bit.
Got the 64-bit version up and running now, thanks!
Time for my daily question to the veterans:
On my secondary PC, a Q6600 currently dedicated totally to WCG, I am currently only crunching 3 tasks, while I previously had 4 going at once with several more queued behind it. When I checked today, I noticed that it has been trying to get more tasks, but it receives a message from the server saying something about "daily quota of 140 results has been reached" (or something similar). There is absolutely no way I've crunched that many tasks in the last two days, let alone "daily". Any ideas what could be going on here, or how I can force it to grab more tasks?
Alternatively, is there a way to "copy" tasks from one PC to another if one PC has lots and the other has a shortage?
There's no way to copy tasks to my knowledge b/c wcg knows which computer has what tasks...
And as far as the quota, check how many errors you have on your WCG results page... My guess is you got a ton of WUs from HPF2 and your computer doesn't like them...
Will do. I'll look into the results when I get home tonight.
Thanks again for your patience with my multitude of newbie questions.
Update - I think all my tasks were being aborted because my Windows time was all out of whack (July 22, 2010) and all my work units were being aborted because they were deemed overdue. I would have assumed BOINC used its own time, not the local time on the client PC, but go figure. Since it won't let me grab any more tasks today (I'm over the quota since all tasks were downloaded and immediately aborted), I will find out tomorrow and hopefully everything will be working.
WCG uses UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) to keep track of time. It's similar to Greenwich Mean Time, except UTC is based on atomic clocks.
When the new day starts (UTC 00:00:00) you will be allocated new work units. It think that would be 7pm Eastern Time tonight.
When running BOINC, always make sure your PC's clock is set correctly.
My problem is fixed - it looks like having the correct Windows time is critical. It's because the default Windows time server could never connect to sync my time. I changed the server to time.nist.gov and modified my registry value so that it updates once per day.
I still find it hard to believe that BOINC would "trust" the client PC's clock to handle deciding when a task would be overdue - this seems like something that would be easy to do and much more reliable to keep track of on their end. Either way, it's not an issue anymore.
Thanks again for all the helpful comments.
I'm now officially crunching - looks like my rig isn't selling so might as well make it work!
Although it keeps telling me I don't have a Nvidia GPU? GTX295 was definitely Nvidia last time I checked!
~Bex
To do GPUGrid I'm guessing? You need atleast Boinc version 6.10.18
Download it here
Also, make sure you have drivers 186.xx on your card.
just post back if that doesn't work and we'll get you set up.
Edit: and 64 bit client get's a 10% boost if you're running 64 bit os.
Oh, and almost forgot :welcome: and thanks for helping!
Well I got the latest 64bit version today. Never done this before so wasn't sure how easy it'd be but the guide made it painless (after noticing I had the 32bit version originally lol)
I had problems runnig newer Nvidia drivers before - I think it's because I lack the newest SP for XP 64bit. Caused me a lot of problems so I just resorted to not using it... Might look at re-installing Vista again if I can be bothered stripping out the crap that I don't need. Haven't got the money to buy into Windows 7 just now :(
Downloading the latest driver to see what it does...
~Bex
Ah - explains everything - anything above 182.XX causes my PC to screw up :(
It reverts everything into 4bit color mode and reduces the res to 640x480 and no matter how much I try to force apply it to run correctly it just doesn't work. I knew there was a reason I'd not updated it...
Thing is, all my games work fine so it's not like it bothers me...
~Bex
My client comes up and says that at every boot, but I know I have an nVidia card ... it's just too old to crunch with ;) ( XFX 7600GT )
Get the Boinc client from here.
The one from WCG is older version and does not support GPU.
As I said - I run XP 64bit SP2 as SP3 generally gives me problems.
I am running the latest BOINC client, so no issues there. Has GPU support just when I add the client it says I have GPU that's supported.
I think the newer drivers require SP3 to work because if I use any of the current listed drivers it resorts my PC turning to 640x480 and 4bit colour mode. The option is there to 1024x768 and 32bit but it doesn't work.
As I say, all my games run fine and I have no issues with anything I want to do. But I've got my copy of Vista 64bit that I've been hesitant to go back to (had too much fun running XP again and stripping it down and such) but more because I can't be bothered setting up Vista to run on my SSD properly...
Haven't got the funds for Windows 7 :(
~Bex
No I know that, but I had the GPUgrid client setup also
Depends how my budget goes - wanted my 3D monitor soonish so need to do Vista or 7 again soon anyway
~Bex
I finally joined the team.. I figure since without you guys, my water cooling virginity would have never been ended, might as well give something back. Too bad 'wolven' was already taken, so had to use imiddlet.
I also joined the team with my Q9550 4.25 GHz i realy hope to help people.
i wanted to do the gpu grid also but it doesn't work on ATI Cards i see..
Following this thread from now on :)
thank you guys :) i think i can help with that few extra points to get rank up :P???
Naa just joking but i guess my help is appreciated if i see the reactions :)
(sorry for my bad english im verry tired right now :P)
What are the projects you guys work on cause i just selected them all, does anny one prefer's one? so i can help with that one.
I saw movieman doing HFCC, so how do i change the projects i want to work on?
I like to work on all of them, So i just leave them all selected. (except HPF2 doesn't like my computers, so I stopped that one)
But if you want to change them, just go to WCG.org -> My Grid (top bar) -> My Projects (left side bar) -> select what you want and SAVE.
If you need more help just let us know!
That's up to the individual, I believe. Some here work exclusively on cancer related projects, others on HIV etc.
this realy sucks -.- i had a project on 67 % and now it suddenly dissapeared and started a new one i can't find annything about the old project and id didnt got points of it .... not cool :S
Occasionally something like this happens.
The other night here I am investigating Windows 7.. Total n00b at it..:D
I see it eating up my "wittle" 36 gig raptor so I delete what I think are useless files..
POOF, the 24 work units I was doing disappear..
Feel better now?;)
but i realy didnt do annything and you have much more cores then me so its not fair XD
Forget about Vista.. it sucks, big time. I went directly from XP x64 to Win7 as well.
See if you can get a student version of Windows 7. You can get Win 7 Pro for like 30-40 bucks that way :)
Welcome to the team MrDucky :toast:
Don't worry bout those WUs, it happens. Hell, back when I updated BOINC on my all machines I lost a ton of WUs (there was a time when upgrading to a higher BOINC version meant killing your WUs  ) -:banana::banana::banana: happens...
well when it happened i too was like WHAT THE HELL!! OMG THATS NOT FAIR MAN MY CPU IS WORKING SO HARD AND THEN THIS HAPPENS COMMON! :P but now you explained it, i understand that **** happens.
O i got my brother on my account to so we have now 2 Q9550's Crunshing and his 9800GT does F@H when hes AFK so does my 5870. only his Q9550 is @ stock speeds and he only uses 2 cores, i also use 2 cores but when afk 3 and 1 for F@H GPU Client cause it loads to.
I also finished 10 projects already on my own CPU (i dont know how manny my brother did)
You got FAH to work on a 5870? Wow, last time I checked, that wasn't possible. /off to check out FAH section
@ jcool you just have the speeds of a 4870 but jes it works if u make a shortcut and add this to the end -forcegpu ati_r700
I've registered to wcg solo, how can i join the extremesystems cumunity?
Where do I get BOINC X64? When selecting "other operating systems" on the download page all I get is Mac and Linux. All x86.
Sure, go ahead. I usually use whatever the latest version is on their HP, haven't had a problem with that in a loooong time.
Problems, if ever, only do arise if you upgrade from a very old BOINC version. But usually even that goes smoothly. BOINC is very hassle-free compared to all the other DC platforms out there.
Go to your "My Team/ Find a Team
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/te...SearchTeams.do
type in XtremeSystems and it should be the only on returned.
Can somebody please fix the screenshots from the first post ? Seems like they are removed from Photobucket... Thanks !
Trying to track down the original poster. After you download the BOINC client, you can print the instructions where it says "clicking here".
saw the Email from Movieman and I'm Good to go!
How much can I expect to contribute with this system:
http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/banner/1099963.png
4.2ghz i7, GTX275 volt-modded to 780core :)
I'm currently a Folder, but I never realized how slick the BOINC interface was. I am very impressed with the options and think I will switch my distributed computing efforts/electricity to BOINC. I really like the options for when it can use the internet and when to stop using resources!
I guess i7 can produce something like 30-35k ppd. You can also use your GTX275 into our GPUGRID project, which is also based on the BOINC platform.
Up and running, Need to get the GPU going next, only a single 5850, but it'll do.
The only projects for ATI are Milkyway and Collatz. Some get it working on F@H, but it's a little harder. (Plenty of guys to help ya though if you want to!)
How do I contribute? the only project to add is WCG ?
nothing special but i've tossed my quad into the fray.
EVERY machine, EVERY contribution is worthwhile.
Similar to hlonipha's question: the only project that 'counts' for the challenge is WCG? So - at least for this week, May 1-8, I should deactivate all other projects in boinc, even if they are associated with the XtremeSystems team?
N00b question + i'm busy@work (don't have time for FAQs, sorry:(): how long it takes to report the results - how fast they will appear on wcg stats? It seems that i've completed few projects over the night but don't know what next?
As long as you don't get any errors you are good to go. For me WCG is the bset way to know if the rig is stable.
sorry for all the questions!!
I installed boinc on my c: drive and I used ssd's in raid 0. Will running boinc on my ssd's deteriorate them? do i need to install boinc on one of my regular hdd (d:\ drive) ? will it be ok to leave it on my raid 0 array of ssd's?
That's how I run it. The ssd's are so fast I could care less TBH.
This thread should help you out.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=249029
Shaders at 1620mhz which is the most I could get out of it at stock voltage. I'll see if I can get the shader up some more. I'll probably clock it down some, maybe back to its stock voltage for GPUGrid because IDK how much stress this is putting on the caps. I'm running 1.28v (stock was 1.17, DMM read 1.14)) and I have heard that around 1.3-1.35 caps start to burst. I'd like the card to last at least the next year. Its been folding at a 740mhz core for 6months with a slightly less boost in voltage, and a few months at its max-stock voltage OC before that, seems to be hold up well though.
edit: Another quick question, how much of a boost does HT offer? When I run Folding@Home I see little to no boost in the newer releases.
Thanks for the guide! Will definitely hang about through the supercomputer week, and hopefully a while longer after that :yepp:
Replaced the dead links with the orginal pics BUT remember, it's the XtremeSystems team you want to join not TPU:D
Is says join the "TechReaction"-team in the Joining World Community Grid the easy way
Is it wrong?
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ide/c7copy.jpg
That is what Dave really meant.:)
To join the XS team, you would go to this page.
Yes, someone will do that.:) The original poster seems to have disappeared. He put all the original pics at the Photobucket.com hosting site and later deleted them. So all people saw were a bunch of boxes with the Photobucket logo in them.
Cool :)
I hope the rest is right. Just got it up and running, how does it looks like? Do I have to do something else before 1. May?
http://img.techpowerup.org/100414/Capture027.jpg
Everything looks fine. The work units for each project vary as far as time to completion. CPU speed is also a factor. Once each unit is completed, it will automatically be sent back to the WCG servers, though not right away. BOINC uses a scheduler. If for some reason it's not sending back the completed work units, go to the Projects tab on the BOINC Manager and hit Update. That will force the servers to take in the completed units.
For some reason my photobucket account got banned (grrrrr). So all the images got fubar'd. Thanks for re-hosting them!
Sorry for being less active around here. I kind of got bored of WCG (but hope to rejoin soon).
Bob used Angmaar's pics with some modifications for the other team he crunches for. We borrowed Bob's pics to replace the missing ones. I gave Dave a couple of replacement pics. When he has time, I'm sure he'll insert them into the first post. I can't modify other people's posts in this section.
If Angmaar still has copies of the original pics, he can always replace them himself. Just needs to find another hosting site.
I know, was just messing with Bob a bit. To be honset I have a rig over at TR.
Good to see the team working to pull this off.
Hey Lu, SHHHHH.....It's all part of my master plan to rule the world...:ROTF:
If I edited these pics for this thread, they would have to be put in by MM. I can't edit Angmaar's post either. I'm up to my eyeballs in other stuff right now but I'll try to get a corrected post up tonight. I think I'll start a new thread and give Angmaar due credit for it.
Angmaar, as to photo_bucket, I don't get them sometimes. They zorched a really good picture I had posted of Raquel Welch, but they let racier stuff go by.... I think they were just jealous that such an old lady looked so good, long before they were born....
Bob
Sadly, I lost my original pictures. :shakes:
Whats another good hosting site BTW? I was thinking imageshack.
I didn't have any of that "stuff" on my photobucket. I messed with some of the "personal" settings to add a bit more privacy and then it gets banned.
I'll take new correct pics in a bit and will post them.
God I love this place. I can mess with someone and they come right back at me.
I know Bob is doing all that he can for the team. As are many others. I am glad to be be part of such a great group.
I switched the TR team Join to XS. They're hosted at ImageShack and saved the pictures this time. (I didn't sign up for an account though, that shouldn't be a problem right?).
Happy crunching!
Sorry for the mix up.
OK Angmaar, thanks for saving me the work...:toast: A couple of tweaks and we should be back somewhere near your original.
1. Please remove MM's red text at the top. The pictures have been updated by you.
2. Most of the text in the body of the post is from TR. That's fine, go with it if you like but please change all my references from "TR" to "XS" or "Xtreme Systems".
3. You are most welcome to clean it up for new users by taking the quote marks out and removing my sign off if you want. You generated the original post, I'm just glad I had this one to help pay back the debt....
What we want here is a clean install guide for those who have never done this. I think we are very close.
And to the new folks out there, WELCOME! I think we are on our way to showing one heck of a supercomputer here....
:worship: to the Xtreme Machine....
My best,
Bob
Am I doing something wrong?. It has been running all night, and i woke up to 12 pages results, but no pints. :Noob:
An I updated the project too.
http://img.techpowerup.org/100415/Capture028.jpg
Those aren't all returned results. Those twelve pages include everything that you have waiting in your queues waiting to run AS WELL as what you've finished and returned. To check what work you have pending validation you need to play with those drop-boxes and filter the list to show only Pending Validation units. hth
Sam, Like DA said, use the drop downs like this:
No valid records, the list is empty, but I know it has finished several tasks. That's what made me worry if I was doing something wrong.
But when i look more, under "My Statistics"-menu and "Statistics By Projects"-section it says:
"Statistics are unavailable until within 24 hours after returning your first result to the server."
Maybe this 24 hours after start applies to all points and statistics? I hope so, otherwise something is wrong.
