I really want to see this thing battle it out with Gigabytes FX on air, ooooooh you have no idea. MSIMAX you have both boards?
Both are in serious need of a BIOS update this week for similar problems with memory/NB/GPU clocking. The current Beta's address most of the problems but not quite all yet, however, we should see public releases later this week or early next. At this point in my testing, flip a coin for the board you like when considering air or standard water cooling.
gonna test pot using dry ice
is that board having probs w/ mem/nb clocking only under cold or even lower clocks for air?
one thing about that mobo my 790GX from asus offers the same features/volts/mem settings in the BIOS and is alot cheaper using OEM D9JNL i tested up to 1700 CL7 before killing the mobo with some bad DICE ideas
Can never put a pot on tight with my handy dandy revision 2 motherboard backplate :D
well send that with that handy dandy pot of yours :p
after i finished testing this board i spoke to chew about the pi performance he said its off alot, also running 3d06 with 3412nb - 3600 yielded no gains @ 4.9ghz so there is a issue with nb performance
and my best pi time@same speed with msi is 13.422, but on the giga the best time was 13.343
so there a performance issue right now but msi has been cranking out bioses so they are addressing issues

Here's a comparison for those that may question my reasons for saying what I say. With the memory and NB speeds being run on those boards, versus the cruddy ram and NB speeds I ran in this bench it should be a landslide and its not...
http://members.cox.net/bostonreefer3/PI%201m.JPG
The issue is the ddr III + northbridge speeds should offer I wider margin of performance gap and its not. If i tried really hard I probably could match or beat times.....the performance gap should be wider IMHO, I just dont think due to bios support that clock per clock they have tapped into the performance of the chips yet....that was done on my gigabyte 790GX, PI is its weakest performing bench.
3600NB speeds should shave a few 10ths off 3400 NB speeds and its not.....the efficiency isn't up to par yet.
Heres mine, still testing with DI and Asus M4A79T....

MSI 790FX-GD70 (7577), 790GX-G65 (7576): MOD BIOS for unlock X3 to X4 :D

Does anyone know of a modded bios for the 790gx-g65? i cant seem to find anything about it.
I'm seriously contemplating picking this board up. I've never purchased an MSI board (always been a DFI guy) so can someone (preferrably not so biased) vouche for the quality? It looks great in the pictures, but I just reassurance that its worth it being the most expensive AM3 board. Also, can someone tell me which BIOS these are coming with now? Still the 1.0 BIOS or is it updated already?
Well, I'll say this...the best mobo I ever had was an NF4 MSI board. I'm thinking of buiding another computer with this board as well. the downside is I don't remember bios updates being that plentiful, but at the same time you have a company like gigabyte that just churns them out like candy but usually there's alwasy some little nuance broken, requiring the bios update in the first place. You'll hear alot of people badmouth MSI's quality, though not sure where that comes from. They're one of the best imo.
p.s. Atleast on Newegg, there's only 3 AM3 790FX boards, and the Asus is $20 more than the MSI/Gigabyte boards. So not sure where you're egtting "the most expensive AM3 board" from?
Mine is on the way from the egg with a 720 and a 4890. I'm sooo frikin stoked! I hope my new parts get here before friday. (crossed fingers and toes)
I've got one coming as well, along with a 955 and 2x2GB Hyper-X DDR1600.
Took about 5 hours but I have everything up and running. I grabbed these OCZ rams - 4GB (2x2048MB)D/C PN - OCZ3P20004GK.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to get it configured properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
having strange issue.
I tried to increase NB clock from 2 GHz to 2.2 by raising multiplier but not increasing voltage and board refused to boot, even after touching voltages.
Could that be a bios bug? Running bios version 1.2.
Is Patriot PVS34G1600LLKN a good RAM to go with the GD70 ?
I am think of this (2x2G) Patriot or (3x2G) Corsair Dominator TR3X3G1600C8D.
The Patriot is CL7 but the Dominator is CL8 and the Cominator comes with 3x2G only.
I got 4x2 GB PVS34G2000LLKN and they work fine in the GD70.
I run them at 1600 speed with 7-7-7-24 t2 timing.
Dont know about the PVS34G1600LLKN but i guess they work too.
xPliziT, I'm having a similar issue. If I change the CPU multiplier at all it won't boot. For example, changing it from "auto" to "14", which shouldnt even change the clock, it will not boot. I'm not sure what can be done about that so I've just been playing with the FSB speed for the time being.
well this sounds like a bios bug since i can raise the multiplier in windows with no problems.
Good call xPliziT, I hadn't thought to try that. Adjusting the multipliers in AOD works for me as well.
I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, but I noticed xPliziT also had an Areca raid controller and a similar problem I am having. So I decided to experiment and found that if I remove the raid controller I can adjust all the multipliers, and before Changing any of them from auto, even to default setting, would cause it to not POST. So it seems like the raid controller has something to do with it that I can't figure out. Since it was somewhat expensive and all my games are on there, I can just clock it from AOD.
Just picked one of these up, will get to it in the next few days or so ;)
well i just got my board today and it is one sexy baby
and it see the ram at the correct speeds and my GFX'S
have more room to breathe so far i dont seen np with this
i will test when i get all the benchies downloaded and
i tell you this, that there is alot of options in this bios
i dont know what there for but i guess i will have to learn
lol
Getting prepped, sorry about the mess this is bench area #2, trying to get twice the work done with 2 rigs going at the same time........
Will swap to 1200 PC P&C as we add more cards 750w PC P&C can handle 2 just fine though ;)

hey man those other slots look lonely
Almost as good as the real thing but not quite :D

hello all as you know i just got my board today and i have np with it
untill i try to over clock it i went into the bios and set the cpu muti to x18
np so i reboot and it wont boot so i go bk into the bios and to look for the vcore
and it on auto but its greyed out there alot in there that i cant even touch
cause it greyed out am i missing something here?
updated thread to include link to 136beta
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=55369
thanks tony I should be using them soon my board and cpu sits here till the weekend.
Inever seen a M/B with this many options in one board lol
but i dont know what im doing to it, and i dont want to blow
anytrhing lol ,if if someone that has this board that can help me
i would be greatful, and im running on Air only and my PC is
in my Spec's
Thanks Roger
Patience, will get to it soon, trying to sort things out for gigabyte users. Might want to refer here for now........Tony has alot more experience with this board than I do.

ok Chew np ,and just to update my problem lol
i cant even lower my muti for the CPU cause it wont boot lol
i went from 16x to 15.5x and doesnt boot lol strange
i went from 16x to 16.5x and doesnt boot
but if i only do the fsb 200 to 250 ITS GOES TO 4Ghz lol
and Vcore 1.45 but theres where it get starnge i do SPI
and i get an error that says
NOT EXACT Round
so i wait little longer dont want to kill nothing lol
Go grab the 136 beta I listed above and flash it...
Test again
wow a flash lol
oh ok i thought you posted that for someone else lol
well i hope it works for you xrogerx.
I flashed from 1.2 to 136beta and my gd70 seems to be toast now.
The last thing i remember was the message "romid dismatch force flash", and i figured well its a beta bios so this might be normal and the filename matched with the older ones too.
So i guess i am screwed now.
Sorry to here about the problems with bios and all, I hope everyone here gets things worked out. I flashed to 1.2 as soon as I booted it up and just left it alone. I hosed my raid 0 once trying to get my memory running decent, but oh well, at least now I now :) Here are some of my results, being somewhat of a novice at overclocking. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Well i flashed it to the 136beta and it seems to have
fixed my problem with not raising the muti so right
now im @ 3.5Ghz with stock voltage and muti @ 17.5
and stable with Prime95 and ohh ya so far it still running
SPI without any problems
Well ups just delivered my "open box" board. I think I just hit the lottery because this one has never been opened. Everything was still sealed and still unused. :D
Stable at stock settings with a x3 720 be and 4gb of g.skill pi 7-7-7-18 @ 1.6v ram. Anyone try that modded bios yet? I'd like to try and unlock the 4th core if possible, although I've noticed a nice difference coming from a opty 165 clocked @ 2.9 on an Ultra-D.
yes you both right , wow this is really diffrent
from the other M/B i had lol
Glad it worked out XRogerX, When I get more time I'm gonna flash to the 136Beta and hopefully it resolves my multiplier issue as well.
ahhh the muti issues, i let you one thing that was a headache thats for sure im glad i have that Bios now
Yeah I can't even set the CPU Multi to 14X, moving it from "auto" to "anything else" causes it to not POST, unless I remove my raid controller. Doesnt make sense to me but I tried it a couple times to be sure. I have just been overclocking it via AOD for the time being. I'd prefer to OC with BIOS, but not much I can do at the moment about it.
Except hope 136beta fixes it!
speaking of Raid im thikning of doing that with this board
but im not sure how to do it
Ordered my GD70 and 4 gigs Mushkin 996601 7-7-6-18. Gonna put the 810 on it till June 1st then a 955 probably. Wanted this board since I first saw it. This will be my third MSI, hope it is a charm!:yepp:
Downloaded the Manual, that OC Dial looks interesting since I will be clocking the bus.
Hope I can remember when to to hit enter and when to hit + or - in the BIOS.
Also ordered some memory herbs from VitaCost.com, hope they work......
Awesome, I'm happy overall with the board, and if they fix the multiplier issue I'm having I'll be quite pleased : )
Did you guys use the integrated M-Flash utility?
And if yes did it warn you before it actually started to flash? Like "ROMID dismatch" ?
anyway i fixed my broken bios. Built an SPI flash cable got software from inet and it worked LOL!!!! So i am back at bios 1.2....
Nice to get quick response guys!
Ok i case anyone need that info for a broken bios flash on THAT or similar MSI board here are two important links to build it:
http://www.fccps.cz/download/adv/frr/spi/msi_spi.html
and here for the schematic:
http://rayer.ic.cz/elektro/spipgm.htm
just for reference:
If the defect board is connected to power supply and power supply is turned on (switch on power supply turned on = standby mode) it looks that you dont NEED the external 3.3 V !!! Just the connection from the LPT port on the other computer (data lines).
The software works flawless. I was very impressed how easy it was.
Ok now to the other question:
When i used the M-FLASH utility it never gave an error message on BIOS A7577AMS.100(Version 1.00) or A7577AMS.120(Version 1.20) BUT I CANNOT flash A7577AMS.136 (Version 1.36beta) for some reason and it warns me: ROM ID DISMATCH..... flash anyway?
So i have NO idea why you guys dont get that error message.
Thanks
guys use afudos to flash bios
where to get that from??
googled afudos and did flash the 136 beta... success
wow.
oh lol and now my areca is not in the boot list of that bios anymore IF i use any cpu multi other than auto.
But hey finally i could flash the beta bios without error. still useless bios.
MSI vdimm read point for those interested, best read point is going to be under one of the caps likely......however this will be your best bet when running on bench or in a case........Board appears to overvolt by .01, 1.65 vdimm measures 1.66v and so on.....
Will find vcore later
Yellow circled.........
http://members.cox.net/chewxs/MSIvdimmreadpopint.jpg
Thanks chew* . I'm really interested in vcore because software reports .005v lower than bios, and i get a vdroop of .08v under load.
I'm not absolutely sure as this board seems a tad tricky but I believe this is a good vcore measure point.......there are other points with similar voltage but I got the most response out of this point when raising and lowering vcore....Once again this may not be the optimal readpoint but when on a bench or in a case this is the most acessible one......
Maybe Tony can help me confirm this.....
Looks to undervolt by .01 at idle when set manually.........Seems to be overvolting a tad at auto.........
circled yellow......
http://members.cox.net/hoobahans/MSI...asurepoint.jpg
Thanks a bunch gonna bust out the multimeter.
off topic: didn't realize you live so close I'm in southeastern MA
Nice, people close by are always welcome to come for a bench session :D
Working out easy settings for OCZ animals atm, I think I've almost got em for you guys......If mine don't work you can try tony's....seems we both arrived at diff settings.
Anyone else getting strange debug codes on the 136 beta bios? My codes don't match any in the manual after I pass post. Everything seems stable although I'm not really pushing the board yet. Instead of AA code I'm getting either 26 or 27 it changes back and forth every few minutes.
yah I'm sitting here running prime wathcing post code bounce form 54 to 53 every few secs.....good news is i'm in crossfire at 240 fsb......so crossfire and overclocking seems to work fine now....about to pull in all my timings in 20 mins.......
How about near the ranges I tested at?
So I'm sitting here studying the post code reporter and I think I figured out what its doing while your in windows...........
Seems to me to be reporting CPU temps ;) Load up prime and watch the numbers shoot up
I used ground from the 24 pin ATX.....Maybe your boards still got issues from the day it knocked out a whole blocks power :D
:rofl::ROTF:
Hey guys, I've just won a 955 BE over at techreaction so I think I will be ordering this board next week! any ram that works particularly well with it?
lucky bastuurd :D
