I think the MM TJ-07 only has ONE opening for the slim dvd drive, which is probably installed prior before that?
Printable View
emoners: This is why this plate is easily to detach from 1. cabling and 2. the case. No problem at all to install. A matter of 3 -5 minutes.
Wow, that's incredible work. However much is being paid for that look isn't enough ;).
Thank you for the generous comments guys! I sincerely appreciate your kind words. :toast:
You'll have to forgive me - I'm very tired and dopier than usual tonight. I wanted to give you an update nonetheless. :)
Thank you Nils. You and I make a great team my friend. :)
Cheers Scott. :)
Your murderMod TJ07 is almost ready!
Thank you Tile. The plexiglas will be 3mm.
Cheers ultimeus.
I think when it's all powder coated black, it will look better. :)
Cheers Daniel. Still a little ways to go. :)
As for the Customs - I've come up with what I believe will be a solution for that. I will mark the outside of the box "sweaty gym socks". Surely they won't open it. ;)
Just as Nils says - the 4 screws on the facade give way to the PLED mount which can then be removed from the outside. Then you're down to the existing TJ07 vertical drive structure.
Actually, a normal optical drive works with our faceplate. :)
Project Update:
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.087.jpg
Since its imperative that the side panel works the first time, we're really going to take our time to get it right. Making a mistake with the cuts would basically represent $400 since TJ07 side panels aren’t available individually - meaning we'd have to buy a new case. What we’re attempting is going to require perfect measurements to get each of the three window holes centered and lined up properly. It would be easier to make one larger hole for the three displays but after much deliberation, we decided it simply wouldn’t look as appealing.
The first step is to see how much space there is between the inside of the side panel and the facade – I know there’s at least enough for the 3mm Plexiglas window but beyond that I’m not sure.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.098.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.099.jpg
7.4mm – that’s more than I thought it would be. Now the potential issue is that with tight individual window cuts, the displays may not be completely visible when viewed at an angle. The distance between the inside of the panel and the actual PLED will affect how visible the display will be when viewed from say, a 45 degree angle. We’ll have to cut the holes slightly larger than the size of the facade holes, but how much is hard to say. The only way to be sure is to make a mockup side panel and find out.
I’ll use black picture frame matte which is pretty thick and sturdy.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.088.jpg
Once the piece is made, I’ll test fit it before cutting the display windows.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.089.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.090.jpg
Next, I’ll measure and cut the windows. I’ll make them 2mm larger than the facade windows. This should be enough to allow reasonable display visibility from about 45 degrees off center. I won't bother with rounded corners for this exercise.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.091.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.092.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.093.jpg
The next step will be to fit a scrap piece of Plexiglas in place. This will help simulate the final look.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.094.jpg
Now we can get an idea of how the windows will look when 2mm oversized and viewed from off center...
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.096.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.097.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.095.jpg
Looks like it should be alright. We may decide to go to a 3mm oversize just to be safe. Since Daniel will likely not be viewing the PLEDs from straight on, we have to make sure he can see them from at least a 45 degree angle.
Now that I’m feeling more comfortable with the concept, the next step will be to essentially put a $400 side panel in serious peril. If all goes as planned, the result should be good. If you never hear from me again – well, you’ll know how it went…
Stay tuned!
Nice mock up!
I will pray to the lucky zen frog that all goes well at the waterjet. :D
Daniel.
Loving this update, I pray too for all goes well.
Cool mock up... I thought it was aluminum at first, and was wondering how the hell you cut it with a razor! haha
I have a similar thing planned for my V1000, but with a mCubed bigNG instead of LCDs. I really like how you mounted with a 2nd panel & countersunk holes. very clean look.
Keep 'em comin!
Wow Charles, that side panel looks really nice as a mock up. Great pictorial and explanation.
Love your logs.
I love this project :D
สุดยอดมากๆครับ
Boy these murder mod logs have me wishing I hadn't sold my tj07 :(.
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
Project Update:
Well, the worst is over – the side panel has finally been cut!
Billy, the Master water jet ace has come through for me once again. Billy, if you’re reading this – BIG thank you my friend!
The process took 4 hours (mostly spent measuring, and re-measuring) and I'm very pleased to report that the result is perfection. We made two test pieces; the first to verify the window sizes and relation to each other and the second to verify the location of the three windows in relation to the PLEDs position. Obviously, it’s critical that the windows are centered around the PLEDs so we really wanted to take our time. As stated previously, there could be no do overs. Since you’ve probably already jumped to the pics I’ll conclude by saying what a relief it is to finally have these little buggers cut!
On to the pics – and there are a lot of them! :yepp:
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.100.jpg
I love this warning label – Classic! We’ll revisit it later. ;)
The first photo series illustrates the fabrication of one of the two test cut pieces. We’ll use this one to verify the measurement of the three windows.

http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.106.jpg
And finally, the part is cut from the larger piece.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.107.jpg
I snuck this little guy on while Billy wasn’t looking. He wasn’t needed for the test piece but I wanted to be sure he had a home for the real deal later…
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.108.jpg
After completing the two test pieces, we’re ready to move on to the side panel!
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.109.jpg
Here, Billy makes adjustments to the cutting program.
Part of the process involves zeroing the nozzle by placing it in the top right corner. Based on the data entered about the panel size, the program will then make the cuts in the correct locations… hopefully.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.110.jpg
This is the most stressful moment – after hours of measurements, calculations and my bad jokes, it’s finally moment of truth time.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.112.jpg
DOOO EEET!

Woot! Success! You can see the very fine media that’s mixed with the water to act as an abrasive.
Next, we’ll move on to main window. For this process, I got a lot more shots because I was actually able to breath.
While you’re looking at these, remember the warning label…

The first time Billy smiles all day...
Why?
Because he’s done!
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.126.jpg
Here you go Daniel!
Ok… I’ll clean it up a bit first…
There’s still the mounting of the Plexiglas and the powder coating of the facade but I wanted to at least give you an idea of how it turned out. I’ll post more better pics when it’s all done. :)
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.127.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.128.jpg
That’s all for today – still a few more twists and turns to go…
Thanks for looking in. :toast:
Awesome update my friend....
Now we can see just how much goes into the preparation of these side panels and the water jet cutting.....always wondering how that worked
:bows: :bows: :bows: :bows: You are the master :bows: :bows: :bows: :bows:
Dayum that looks nice. Also looks like someone forgot about the "classic" warning label
If only I had the resources... aw well, jigsaw + dremel works well enough.
very clean side panel :yepp:
:bows: @ Charles
:bows: @ Billy
:bows: @ lucky zen frog!
Stunning, just stunning! And you were right, going wider on the displays windows does look better!
Phew, glad this phase is now behind us. :yepp:
Daniel.
So sexy, It's real murderpr0n
Each day I'm like a junkie waiting for his update
Amazing craftsmanship!
man, that was like the update from hell - I think I held my breath just scrolling through the pictures.
Very well done.
you better get you head outta there before that thing pierces!!! I got some abrasive in my eye real bad one time cuz I forgot to close the hood on my waterjet :D
Billy for the win :D He is a good model also - almost looks human ;)! Good that the frog observed everything so well. Frog for the win. Good team - good job!
that panel looks class, how do you get the window so flush?
Just glue it with glue that has no thickness :) But in the picture there is no window installed yet.
Nice cut you made in there..... Congratulation :D:D:D
Not only the fingers are in danger in waterjet but also whole hand since human body got so much water in it. Thats daredevil actions right there, good it turned out great after all!
o m g
extreme Charles!
:cheer: Charles - The best from the best.
It´s an amazing perfectly work what you and your green friend had done. Every SilveStone designer will turn red if they could see what 3 creative brains plus your frog are able to build .
Sweet mod you got there. Very clean looking
UBER UBER UBER mod, done by a UBER UBER UBER 1337 Modder :D
Charles,
That is perfection! I appreciate the water jet pics, I have never seen one in action.
Quality craftsmanship at it's finest boys and girls. Great job yet again Charles.
Now that's a proper casemod - when it looks like factory made.
That's quite a pretty mod you got there, Charles. Is there going to be watercooling when this is all said and done?
state of the art !
for sureee... !
OH WOW! That waterjet cut just looks FANTASTIC! EXCELLENT planning on that!!!:clap::clap:
It's amazing how just a little extra care makes such a BIG difference!
Keep up the AMAZING work!!!!
Just when I thought I was going cold turkey, I get the hit I needed...another murderMod build.
Charles as per usual the build and finish of the panels is excellent, they just look like standard parts for the case.I think this is what sets your work apart from all the rest.
Nice to see all the work involved in fabricating a new part and appreciate the pics of the cutting process....keep more coming.
These pictures are incredible Charles!
It's amazing to get an insight into just how things are done.
I think i want a waterjet cutter now...:p:
I have broken my own rule, and keep coming back to this thread ... and too many visits to murdermod.com ... I must resist ...
Thanks for sharing the water jet photos!
Shazza, maybe you should request a ban at XS :D
Ha ... you guys are too funny. I may ban myself, or should I just say my savings account is getting seriously nervous.
And ... back on topic. My fingers are sore from scrolling though the many threads here dealing with the wonderful work of Charles and the murderMod believers. This is fascinating stuff!
exceptionally tidy work... dats supa uber :D
but why are those leds in the op no longer available??
This is great.
So much work and we have only seen one side of the case.
Thanks for the comments and kind words Guys! :)
I’m sincerely overwhelmed with the support here. Your encouragement motivates me immensely and I'm pleased to say we have lots more stuff to show you this year. To start with, we’ll be showcasing additional production processes with photos and in some cases, videos. Upcoming detailed features will include; powder coating, anodizing, and sheet metal work. We’ve got more custom, one of a kind builds scheduled (including pure|murderbox) and a few other little surprises planned. So stay tuned – we’ve only just scratched the surface. :yepp:
Project Update:
The Plexiglas window has been created and installed which concludes this portion of the build. The whole interior needs to be powder coated before we’ll get a final look at the PLED mod but I thought I’d post a few progress pics in the meantime. Beyond that, there’s still the lower LC section to assemble and hopefully, the “slight twist” to reveal. Once these tasks are complete, all the internal case parts will go for powder coating and then everything will be reassembled and then packed and shipped to Daniel in Germany. Once there, Daniel will complete the build by installing his components and finalized the LC loop and wiring. It’s likely I’ll send the lucky zen frog along to help Daniel complete the build – provided of course he promises to send it back when he’s done!
Side panel progress pics – interior still to be powder coated.

looks great charles, now what are you gonna do with all those temp sensor wires to go to those displays :D :poke:
Looks amazing Charles!
Also, I love your view in that last picture.
I think MatrixOrbital's supplier stopped producing them.
My initial intention was to display bargraphs on them indicating hard drives activity (like you see in the original concept). But the idea of plugging in a couple of temp sensors has been visiting me lately :D. No reason why I can't program them to do both.
Daniel.
charles, may i know what camera are you using with what lense.
best regards jimmy
the work and pictures are the cat's pajamas! I do like the contrast of the bare aluminum under the plexi, but I can imagine the final product will look perfect!
Amazing work yet again Charles!
Does any one realize that Charles is selling PC crack? I for one am addicted.
สวยมากๆครับ
Ooohh the Cats Pajamas - that is something I havent heard for a while but sums this up perfectly :D
That my friend I can definately relate too....I had only just recently come out of rehab and now Charles posts this build....he is going to send me broke :yepp:
Charles as usual you manage to completely outdo yourself and I bow in the presence of the zen frog master ;)
Keep it up
Perfect.
Nothing more needs to be said.
perfect man [ for cutting case ]
I think I may have to use that Cardstock trick for when I decide to mod up my sidepanel, as I (as far as I've been able to sort so far) LITERALLY only have one shot at cutting the sidepanel right, as the Case I have...I've had a real hard time finding a replacement (I knew I should have picked up more than one when they went on boxing week sale 2007)
Thanks for the comments Guys! :)
Hi Jimmy,
I recently got a Nikon D90 which I'm lovin'. I'll looking for a good 2nd hand lens but for now I'm using the 18-70mm kit lens. I'm hoping to find a good deal on the 18-55mm 2.8 DX or something similar.
Project Update:
Nothing today I'm afraid. I'm working on the "slight twist" and hope to have something tangible to show soon. :yepp:
In the meantime, here's a pic of a New York's Time Square I like:
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/305...54efb098_b.jpg
...in keeping with the Cat's Pajamas theme. :ROTF:
Cheers All. :toast:
Hi Charles nicely done... Nikon D90 is a great camera.. I use to have the Nikon D200 with the 18-200mm VR lens (which is a all around great lens for everything) and the Nikon Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 (razor sharp images with this lens) which I used for inside stuff. And another good lens is the micro 105mm lens.. I sent you a email asking about the murderMod TJ07 Serpentine Topgrill for a TJ09 case. Thanks for the reply looking forward to here back from you when you talk with SilverStone.
charles
you should look into the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX, its a 16-50mm f/2.8 and its WAY cheaper then nikons 17-55mm (half the price)
i visited the Tokina booth at the CES and talked to one of the reps, all there new lens will included a built-in motor though you wont
have to worry about it.
waiting for an update
Cheers Russ. :)
Very nice shot! I'm definitely looking for that 105mm so I can get some nice shots of my fish. :yepp:
I've had my eyes glued to the local Craigslist for the 17-55mm - I know the good ones go fast unless of course they're asking too much. The 18-200mm looks good but I fear it may be a bit too hefty for what I'm shooting.
I'll contact you again as soon as I get word from Silverstone about the topgrill!
Rocky, that lens looks great! I never even considered a Tokina but after your suggestion and then reading other reviews, I'm a hafta go down to my local camera shop with my D90 and strap one on for a test drive. Cheers! :)
I love that New York picture. Although I must say my favorite part is the review sign that reads, "IMHO, IT'LL MAKE YOU LOL."
Since when is the New York Sun an online forum?
Anyway, I'm tuned in close for updates!
Wow that is great attention to detail there. Big props for doing all that on such an expensive case.
:up::up:Just looked at your last work Charles. Very well done. Very clean and very cool look!:clap:
I know that it's too late now because the cuts are already made but I wish I could get a look of how it would affect if the three cuts would be a little smaller, so that u can't see the aluminium beneath.
I know that u made it that size because of seeing the whole displays from a certain angle. But is it really necessary to see the whole displays until the edges (i don't know how it looks like when the displays are running ore how big the enlightened area is respectively)? If someone looks from an angle >45° the aluminium area at the opposite gets pretty big, because of the distance sidepanel - display.
Would be nice if you can show a picture from >45°. :)
Or has this always been your intention, maybe to create a further contrast like skinnee says? Or isn't it enough contrast while the displays are running?
Any way... it's just impressive to see how much passion someone can put in such a project.:clap::up:
Hey Mr. Miyagi,
Kepp in mind that the aluminum you see is going to be powder-coated black. So in essence (hopefully), you won't be able to really see it, and everything will blend okay.
With that said, Charles, make sure you post plenty of angled pics once it's painted!!!
Alriiiiiighty then.
I must have missed that one. :)
Thanks hiiyah
Charles, this mod looks sooo cool! I really like the whole concept and the way the final product turned out!! Excellent work so far! Can't wait to find out what this twist is going to be :D.
Can just I ask what type of bit you're using in your rotozip? I didn't realize that it was able to cut aluminum! I'd like to do some cutting myself, but was hoping I could mount that kind of bit into my router (I don't have a RZoD:(). Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Mike
Charles,
Update needed!
perfect Mod
I think Charles is taking a well deserved weekend off.
Work on the "sLight Twist" continues. Patience, it won't be long 'till the next update! :D
Have a great weekend all!
Daniel.
Great work with the case!
Congratulations!
Thanks for the kind comments and words of encouragement Guys. :)
Hi Mike,
I'm afraid I don't have a part number for you - I bought the bit from a place called HD Supply here in Vancouver. I took a couple pics for you in the hope that it may help you find one:
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.135.jpg
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DS.mM.136.jpg
As I recall, it was about (or aboot as we say in Canada) $75
Project Update: I'm deep, deep into the bowels of the "slight twist" part of this project. I hope to have news and hopefully a pic or two in the coming days.
In other news, I'm in the process of setting up a new workshop/photo setup. This is no small task but the result will give me a lot more working room and greater lighting control. This should make for better photos without the need to correct the white balance of 3 different light sources. I'll try to get some pics of the new space and it's "special feature" in the coming days.
The lucky Zen Frog sends his regards - He's a bit bummed tonight having had money on the Cardinals.
Cheers. :)
Can't wait to see the slight twist ;)
"slight twist" ... Can't wait :D
Wow. Clean and simple.
What will the displays display?
Charles, how did you make the edges of the cut out holes black? I don't see any bare alu, did you paint the edges or something?
Gotta say its looking good that water cutting gives a perfect finish.
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
Yes, it's a special paint that matches the anodizing. :)
Project Update:
Still wrastlin' with the slight twist. Sorry there's no progress pics yet - all will be revealed in due time. :)
In other news, I received the three custom PLED cables from Matrix Orbital. Unfortunately, they were thicker than I wanted; especially since they'll have sleeving. Nothing a little minor surgery can't fix...
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_5805e.jpg
After sleeving, these puppies would be too rotund to effectively conceal.
http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_5807e.jpg
Under the knife...

We got a bleeder!
hehe, just kidding. :)

http://www.murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_5827e.jpg
ahhh.... that's better!

sleeving makes teh happy.
Now to do the other two. Thanks for looking in. :)
Naked pics !!!!! We might have to report you.
You just love to tease us, don't you :)Quote:

Nsfw?
Nice razer, care to link me to it? :)
the blade looks like a x-acto, more specifically this one http://www.xactoproducts.com/ProductDetail.asp?id=169
I have to agree with you there Shazza - I have a feeling that most of his time is spent pondering how best to tease us whilst still coming up with a worthwhile post :yepp:
As usual it is great to see a little more into what you do Charles - the "extra" things that you do....just remember to keep those updates flowing so I don't go into withdrawals :D
Yeah, they're some really nice updates...great teasers, lol...anyways- I had to borrow your idea for using frame backing for templates...but because Foam board was on sale for like... 1.76 a sheet (20*30*3/16in) I picked up those instead (as opposed to ~6.50 a sheet of framebacking) next lazy day I take it's going to be partially spent doing design, trying to figure out my sidepanel layout for windowing
Come on Charles! We need more M|M :banana::banana::banana:!
*cough* UPDATE! *cough* :D
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
I know an update is long overdue. Without boring you with details, I will simply say that the sLight Twist is proving to be more of a challenge than I originally thought. Unfortunately, it's the kind of thing that can only be revealed when complete which is why there's been no progress updates. I'm optimistic that there will be illumination in the next few days. I'm also hopeful that the wait will be worth it.
So as not to appear empty handed, I'd like to share a link to one of my favorite websites for those that may not have already discovered it.
http://www.thecoolhunter.net/
Inspiration galore up in there!
Cheers. :)
Very nice project indeed.
Send it to Cebit ;)
Hey Charles look at this website you should like it
http://www.amkashop.com/index_en.php
I just read the entire thread, and I'm basically speechless. Charles your modding skills are second to none, that is absolutely perfect work.
wow Charles, thanks a lot for that.. priceless inspiration indeed!
its always amazing to watch your work... my only problem is that every time I see a new set of photos I get an urge to clean my apartment.. :ROTF:
can't wait to find out what's this slight twist.. :toast:
