Not using Everest to read those temps are you ??

Using RealTemp, Coretemp etc .. for me Idle Core #2 is always 5C higher than #0,1,3 .. but at load #0-2 equal out while #3 is about 5C less than the others .. weird

Meanwhile Everest reads them all similar - with #0-1 & #2-3 constantly showing identical readings in each pair ..

Either way I put it down to just variations in how the DTS are manufactured & calibrated from chip to chip & none of the programs can really read the Tjmax (hence work out true core temp) for each core properly anyway

What clock are you at for your 1.5V 70C readings ? Those are nice temps on air for that much voltage ! Might have to try the sandpaper myself . .

Im using Realtemp.
Im still messing with clocks but those temps are with 20*200 but running with 21*200 for 4200Mhz.
Something odd goes on with the multiplier - regardless of the asus "bug", I sometimes see 21*200 with 1.45+v pump into the core. According to the other thread I would expect to see that 21 drop to 20 but it doesnt seem to...not all the time anyway.

The CPU top was far from flat and took a good bit of sanding to flatten off.
It was like a ripple pattern, ridge around the very outside, peak in the middle and trough around that (does that make sense?). Im seeing similar drop in temps as I did with my 3.6ghz q6600 rig so I think its worthwhile.

I'm using Arctic Cooling MX-2 for thermal compound also used it on my 4870x2 and drop the temps 4 degrees celcius on idle

turning HT off is not that much cheating as it does not improve performance for many applications and lowers then in a few ones.

my idle temps are 30 29 29 29 and never reach 70ish ...witch i find ok in forcasting summer temps @75+ load ^^,

3,8 is a good oc @1,3v not pushing too much on the cpu and mobo great performance increase....

i love my rig! (eccept for video card :D)

btw i'm really positively surprise by the performance and silence @full RPM for the Cooler Master V8

Glad I'm not the only one .. I got the sleep bug too on 1003 ..

Not that it bothers me much .. standby is for work laptops with heaps of IT junk installed .. always prefer a fresh boot for my gaming rig .. nice and quick with a barebones Vista installation ..

On another topic: What are peoples Motherboard temps like ???

I was getting about 34C Idle on a typical cool day .. but its gone up to 36-37C now I've fitted dust filters over both the main intake fans on the HAF ..

TBH, it doesn't bother me all that much either as long as I can have solid gaming. It would be "nice" if everything functioned as advertised, though. 35c for MB right now using Everest in a cool room. It's 10 degrees outside. It jumps up about like yours too. I've got a 40mm in low-ball mode attached to the NB. It looks real cute! :D The HAF is a great looking case, BTW. :up:

So you've got the 40mm fan on the NB using the standoffs supplied eh ..

Did it make much diff to the MB temps when you installed it ?

Yup, at full blast, reporting 8200rpm, maybe 2c. When its turned down it seems ether equal to stock or the difference isn't measurable.

If your talking about the MB temperature not changing much with the NB fan .. then thats not suprising since (as I just learned) the MB sensor is nowhere near the NB .. its actually behind PCI2 slot - likely covered by your Grahpics card if you have a big 2-slotter like mine - which explains why MB temperature seems to go up when gaming or graphics benching ..

So you *are* probably doing your NB a lot of favours anyway .. if only bloody ASUS put an actual NB temp sensor !

after my lapping excercise and fiddling with the system today, the temps across all four cores are now within 1degC - beofre they were 5degC

I'm also seeing throttling of my DVD ripping speeds as reported in my other thread. Im not sure if this is a ICH10R limitation or an Asus issue. Seeing max speed from DVD DL rip at 11500kb/s -> 12500Kb/s.

Running BIOS 1003 now too.

On topic of temps .. does anyone else fine a 10C difference between CPU Case Temp as reported by Everest vs. ASUS PC Probe ??

ie. If I run Everest first it reads about 30C .. if I load PC Probe it jumps up on both to about 40C - this also matches the BIOS CPU temp reading ..

So which to believe ? I suppose the BIOS would be the correct one eh.

So I've heard about 'barebones' vista, but what is it and how do I get it? Is it standard Vista with mods, or a seperate product altogether? Most importantly, how many seconds from cold power button turn on to fully booted in desktop with drivers loaded?

I think its the opposite of Vista with mods... unless I'm mixed up isn't it Vista stripped down to the metal so that it rund faster?

When you look at the temps tonight .. try a little test for me if you can ..

*Disable* PC Probe from starting automatically (if its set to do so) .. upon clean reboot just start Everest alone - no PC Probe or any other temp software ..

See if it still reads CPU temp the same as you expect .. start PC Probe and see if the readings jump at all ..

Here, it's been sitting for a while: 28c for the CPU case, physical cores 1 and 2 are 32c, cores 3and 4 are 30c. Room temp is about 69F.

Woh .. and PC Probe confirms this temperature ?

Do me another test if you can .. Check your BIOS CPU temp !!

Its in the Hardware Monitor under the Power Settings menu ..

I find the BIOS temperature reads higher on mine than PC Probe .. which is to say about 35C at stock settings .. 40C at 4Ghz overclock

Why would you disable the Prefetcher and cache?

Just got my 920 today with the plain P6T (got the plain because of the pci slot located at the bottom where I wanted it). I went for a conservative overclock of 3.5 gig. CPU and QPI/DRAM voltages at 1.25 volts, memory at 1.64 volts, turbo boost on, hyperthreading on, everything else on auto. Memory running at 700mhz. Very stable so far with good temps. I hit the above first try right out of the gate with no glitches at all. I'm sure this will go higher but I'm pretty satisfied with it as it is.

Have my i7 920 running at 3.8Ghz by setting BCLK to [180] and leaving everything else to [Auto]. Everything is stable and happy, except my CPU-Z shows my voltage to be 1.4v. I've noticed that most people are getting 3.8Ghz with their voltage at around 1.2v. Manually setting cpu voltage in bios to anything besides auto makes my overclock unstable. You should be able to achieve 3.7 on near stock voltages...1.424v is WAY too high (explains your temps). I'm running stable at 3.6 on a coolermaster V8 on stock voltages of 1.2 core and 1.2 qpi/dram. It idles 39-41 in a warm room. (damn these pcs and their space heater qualities).

I have read lots of posts before buying and chose to go with the corei7 920 chip on the basis that I could get some additional performance out of it by overclocking. I have never done this before and I am doing it to get additional performance in video encoding/photo editing, not game playing or as an intellectual challenge.

I will continue to read as much as I can but I thought it might be worth asking for some specific advice for my set up needs and would REALLY appreciate some guidance from those more expert than I!

So with the above kit and stock cooling how far should I push? 3.4, 3.6, 3.8?

I need stability and reliability and expect to keep this kit for at least 2 years so I don't want to thrash it! It just seems unreasonable to have a 920 and run it at 2.66 when with a little effort it will crank up more.

So how far? and with what settings? anybody care to give me an example of a good starting point that is relatively easy to achieve with the ASUS P6t SE?

guys I'm having serious problems here.

Whenever I try the tiniest of overclocks, the system doesn't boot and what's worse, it doesn't boot for HOURS. I have cleared CMOS, put the battery out/in and still it doesn't boot. I disabled Turbo and Speedstep, just raised the BCLK to 150x20, with Unc and QPI adjusted accordingly,DRAM at 1200mh, and even gave more voltage which wasn't needed in the first place. The system doesn't boot. Did similar things yesterday, didn't boot no matter what I did, when I woke up next morning it booted

Could you please give some advice as to what's happening. Thanks

annihilat0r, I've exactly the same problem. I've seen that I have this problem only when my GTX 275 is plugged in, no problem with a 8400GT..

There is one very important Virtualization feature that Asus has crippled, but it is under the "Advanced" tab and called "Chipset" I think, in it you can enable "VT-d" or "Virtualization for directed I/O". When I enable it it stops me from booting at all.

I believe this is because I am running 6 sticks, but I am not sure. All my timings and unclock speeds are fine, and it is memtest (10 passes) and 24hr Prime95_64 stable?. :confused:

Also odd, Anandtech has the same issue of low bandwidth and latency. (though they are running stock settings)

This is not a very good bios/motherboard. Since I moved to 0904, the system takes longer to boot. I never did resolve the issue of cold boot and I've isolated it to being the motherboard with bios 0301. I also noticed that it randomly resets bios settings to default for some odd reason.

Once running though, I can easily run prime95 at either 4.0 or 4.2...but the issue still remains with the cold boot issue and intermittent bios reset problem.

It's not the powersupply or memory. No one has seen or heard of this?? It's all over the place at Asus forum.

Very happy with my new P6T Deluxe V2 and 920!

Installed it and immediately went for OC. Left everything on auto, stock voltage for CPU and a small Volt bump for the mem since it's running at 1600 now. Super easy to OC and got 4ghz with no problem. Booted into Win7 ran some torture tests overnight. No problems. (that's with turbo on and speedstep off)

It's extremely stable at 4.2ghz on very small voltage bumps so I will probably leave it there. 4.5ghz is bootable and will go into win7 but it's only workable and stable above 1.425 volts. Not sure I want to go that high on a new setup.

Same issue here. Many times it won't even boot even with my 100% stable settings. I can get it to start booting right by disabling "VT" and re-enabling it. This forces a 100% full shutdown, rather then most other settings that do a partial shutdown.

Asus has released a new P6T BIOS. It won't be available through their download section until the 13th, but here is the direct link.

Here is the thread discussing the results so far.

Sadly Asus still has not produced a change log for the BIOS. They simply list "Added new Processor support".

I think I'm going to flash 0801. Seems that someone is having an issue with the raid drivers with 1001.

Ok, I took the very aggressive settings I saw above in the screen shots and gave my new rig a go.

I tried initially with the BLK at 210mhz - but I could not get the cpu Prime95 stable no matter how high the voltage (I pressed 1.525!).

PS - I have water cooling. Not phase, just regular water cooling.

So I backed down 1mhz at a time until I hit 205 * 21 = 4.3Ghz @ 1.475 Volts = STABLE.

Then I experimented with adding back some of the CPU features like Prefetch, cache, c1e, speedstep, and c-state.

All of these worked, and didn't effect the stability EXCEPT C-State.... c-state made it so that windows didn't even boot!

Then I experimented with putting the voltages all back to Auto.

All of them worked on auto EXCEPT for the cpu voltage which needed to be set to 1.475.... I tried everything below that, but got immediate blue screens upon prime95 testing.

NOTE - All the above work is with Hyperthreading ON. (and it is still on).

Prime95 was run with 8 threads, and small FFT's for maximum CPU stress.


SO.... should I be satisfied with this OC given the board and its 200blk 'wall'?

Or are there some obvious tips that could help me achieve better?

TEMPS: 35 Idle, 82 maxed after 2 hours prime95.

You should be able to use the "Afudos" tool by booting off a USB drive.

Simply being able to BOOT with 215 or 220 blk doesn't mean a THING about being STABLE at that speed.

Since I wasn't able to get a stable OC at 210blk, I don't see a reason to worry about being able to get to 215+.....

1.Is there any particular reason to disable HT, except to see higher numbers?
2. I mean performance wise, thats why we've got i7 with hyper threading right?
3. What's the average temperature difference with HT on/off?
4. Got 0904 BIOS, should I keep it, or update it. They say, that they've only added new CPu's support on latest one.

Use Flash Disk Bootable For Flash To Old Bios

I'm still having cold boot issues.

Tried several bios from 1001 to the present 1201. This is so frustrating.

Can run prime, games etc...just the occassional cold boot issue. What the hell could it be?

My 2 cents, don't leave everything on Auto. Just insert the values. The auto often raises voltage higher than they need too.

And another thing, watch the qpi voltage. If it gets too high the system will freeze.

It's very sensitive ... and i guess the best values are above 1.35v.

Another thing that i came accross was the PLL voltage.

I never got the 3.8Ghz stable until 3 days ago.

I raised the PLL voltage to 1.92v and lowered the qpi and vcore to 1.264v .
Perfectly stable with highest temperatures reaching 59ºC (w'cooled)

Can someone post 'stable - non-cold boot settings at 4 - 4.2ghz? Problem is still reoccurring since I began this purchase months and months ago. As mentioned, tried every bios since 0901 - now 1201. When booted can run prime, games etc stable. When shut down for a long period of time, it will either reset or most likely not boot up until I press the reset button. At this point, I will pull the board and sell it and will not return to Asus boards ever again.

Has anyone been able to enrich there final workable bios settings with the P6T?

If I leave the board on standy mode it's fine. If you shut it off it reset again today...this is the most frustrating board I have ever worked with. Anyone?
