That's the key - turn off everything. I also set the priority to Realtime also.
I can't chase you any more. My 965 tops out at 4.41 GHz.
I might have to go to Fry's and pick up a $230 i7 920.

yeah, turning everything off made big difference. I am near my max as well, I can run it no prob at 211x21, 1.55v cpuz, but 212x21 shuts down ~ 1 min mark using 1.6cpuz. maybe later in year I will run at ?1.62V 212x21, if I knew for sure I would get 9, might try later on, though may not make it.
Oops almost had a 9.3. Went back to the G. Skill Ram DDR3-2021 at 8-8-7-20 1N
Had to settle for a 9.2 score. Still ran at 35 x 126. 4.41 is all my 965 can do. Temps now at 100% load is 58C.

Has anyone tried this with Windows 7 Beta to see if its as fast as WinXP using same hardware ?
Kensek has past the 9.2Milj.nodes/sec. -> 9.223.516 makes his position 1 stronger!:clap:
But rge comes close to the 9 Milj.nodes -> 8.951.825 and take the second place!
2009 just started and we have already 2 higher scores...
And i'am also curious what the chess program will do under Windows 7! ...soon we will know!

That is interesting, this program will use all the bandwidth you throw at it. I even got 23x196 or 4.5 to run to 20th run before crashing, but was only at 9.13 there, 21 run would probably be just over 9. No way will I get 9.2, unless can get memory to work at 1960 or 10x. Maybe next weekend will have time to play with secondary timings, but I dont think my mem can do over 1870 even with 1.98v, just 1600 rated.
Yep, it must be multi or the associated higher qpi (you may know, I cant test higher qpi). It is not bandwidth or uncore, though uncore helped more than bandwidth.
I got 9.05 no problem, by just increasing to 212x21, this run in pic was at 8x mem 7,7,7,21, but even 6x mem at 8,8,8,24 came in at 9.03. I ran my ram single channel, dual channel, triple channel all with same score ie 9.0 to 9.05. With triple channel I ran mem at 6x multi with 7,7,7 timings and 8,8,8 timings, 8x at both timings, and even got my 1600 ram up to 10x..2120 with 1.7qpi and over 2v DRAM to run to 20th run. All those runs given same MHZ, bandwidth was almost meaningless, all within statistical error. Most all were between 9 and 9.05 on 21 run, and 9.07 to 9.13 20th run.
@ Rge - at least you can run above 4.4 GHz easily.
My i7 965 maxes out 4.42 GHz at 1.585v after vDroop. But CPU Temp is only 58C. It may have to do with the fact that Asus R2E has a TDP power limit on the CPU.
I'd would've considered the Blood Rage, but I don't like the PCIe slot layout the board has.
I just ran a 9.238.112 but I'm not submitting it. I'll submit something if it is over 9.250
58C...is that load? My 24/7 temps on max load are 70C at 4.2 and 1.376v load. I realized after posting the run in pic, I actually hit 100C, see thermal LOG in red under core 1 on real temp...LOL. That one probably throttled at one point, maybe right at end, but did not affect score, have other runs that did not throttle or hit 100C with same score. I need to open a window and let some cold air in when running at that volts....27C ambient is not cutting it.
I wanted to see what mine would do when not fighting 98-100C temp. opened two windows and closed door and vents and let room cool down from 26C to about 12C or 54F. That way my load temps were running about 84C max instead of 100C. max i could get was 215x21 or 4.5 ghz, also ran on extreme perf, 7,7,7 21. I need to try some different bioses, but did not have much time to play with it.
But I did hit 9.237.7. What is interesting I hit 20 on a down spike, and 21 on upspike, so 21 ended up higher than 20. I think if I ran it 20x, might get more just by luck of variability. My runs varied from 9.15 to 9.237, had 1 run that had much higher 20 score 9.28....then 21 took a nose dive at last seconds to 9.21....thought I was going to hit 9.25.
Today a new leader: rge -> 9.237.692 Nodes/sec.:clap:
@rge:"might get more just by luck of variability" -> I call it not luck,it's normal, because the chess engine has to do millions and millions calculatings, and you have so many
posibilities that he at some depth find a other move or combinations from moves that you get a different score! And the drop can also to make with HT(Hash Tables) are full like on your screen 99% (in Analyse window, right) explained on page 4,message 2.
And also today i can publish the first results from the Phenom II X4 940!

Okay, now I'm really wondering what's going on with that four-way Opteron server down there. Something is seriously off.
One last run, forgot to try my 23 multi (turbo enabled). Again with windows open this evening, around 10C or 50F in the room. 23x198 or 4.55 Ghz, mem still 8x 7,7,7 21. Load temps about same mid to high 80's, score was 9.246.923.
I just tried again - and I could only muster up a 9.155 with my usual 35x126 settings. Tried for an hour.
The room started at 52F and in an hour was up to 60F.
The Gig Extreme is a great board for 920s and 940s. My 920 kicked but when i owned the Gig and ran with F4c. It ran HT and Turbo at 21x20 Prime stable at 1.46 BIOS volts and 1.406 VDroop.
But the Gig sucked with the 965 in it.
Oh Well Great Job. The Cold really helps in OCing.
Well contrary to what some people said, i7 does respond to cold. I tested my new 3838A 920 on air and was rather disappointed that it needed 1,440V to run 4Ghz prime with HT on. Now on phase, I can run almost 4,2Ghz with the same Vcore, which makes the chip seem halfway decent... but i haven't tested a lot yet so we'll have to see.
Thanks for your new nr1 high score rge -> 9.246.923:clap:
Kensek & rge move there system to a cooler room or even open window to have lower temps, they stay in a cold place to get higher results!
So now we get even with High Multi x Lower Bus Speed (35x126) or Lower Multi x High Bus Speed (23x198) scores above 9Milj.nodes/sec.
JP.
Run 3 of about 10 runs. Still at 23x198, mem timings same. 23x198 is very stable at 15C.
When gets down to near 0C one night, should be able to make it to 21 run consistently at 23x200 or 4600, had one at 9.5 at 20th run at 4600, then froze at 1:45 still on 9.4...sucked. But temps too high for that now, and rising with afternoon.
RGE - My run was done this morning when my room temp was 50F. Ran at 35 x 127. As I said I use those new low volt low Cas Ram. DDR3-2037 8-8-7-20 1N timings

I installed windows 7, 64 bit yesterday, build 7000, and like it, so I am done with xp. But will be interesting to see how windows 7 does, when I can get some cold temps to test.
yep, if you can run 2000+ at low timings, I definitely cant do that, at 2000 I was at 9, 9, 9, 27 and had to loosen up some subtimings as well, probably killed benefit of extra bandwidth on mine.
I will compare windows 7 to XP at previous runs just for interest sake, then try for 23x200...but need some cold weather. spi 1m on wind 7 (beta) is only about .05 seconds slower than XP, and that is with xp stripped down, havent seen what services I need on 7 yet...so should be near same.
I tried Win7 last week - 32 bit and it performed worst than XP by quite a margin.
All my benches on Win7 come out poorer than XP, but better than Vista.
http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/7...n7chesslf3.jpg
The chess test was as fast on Windows 7 as on XP on mine, once I disabled all the remote access, remote registry, etc crap (no desire for anyone to access my computer remotely anyways). Prior to lightening up the svchost load, spi and chess were slower. Though I had 64bit not 32bit as well.
Was not cold enough to try 23x200, so I ran just 5 runs of same 23x198. But 2 of 5 runs on 7 beat my second best windows xp run at same speed, and both 9.27 and 9.25 were close to my max 1 in 30 XP runs of 9.298. Windows 7 was running more consistently high though, at least in 5 runs, but may just be coincidence that 7 on average was running faster. I am pretty sure I could get over 9.3 with enough runs on 7, but not going to catch you unless I get 23x200 running.
@RGE
I'm done for 3-5 weeks until my g. skill perfect storm ram (DDR3-2000 7-8-7-20) get here. Also thinking of trying the EVGA X58 Classified model when it's released in Mid-February.
So give me something to shoot at by the time I'm ready to go higher in Mid February. If I could run my i7 965 at 4.55, instead of 4.45, and get that new Ram to run at DDR3-2050 with 7-8-7-20 Timings - a 9.500 score can be had.
It's nice to see that Windows 7 have done a great job! It's equal with XP now and maybe with more fine tuning/settings it's faster then XP!!

-2C outside, cold enough to run 4.6Ghz (23x200). mem 10x (2000mhz) at 8,8,8 22 timings, uncore 22x (4400mhz).
Ran a few times to get 9.4. If ran enough times would probably max out at ~9.5...had a 9.55 well past 20 run...but last seconds nosedived to 9.38 by 21.

Wait till the late fall when I get another board and another EE CPU. Bought a CPU Pot from Bartx in late April for $180 that is just dying to apply some DICE and LN2 to my next setup.
Almost pulled a the trigger on a ES W3580 last week for $500 but then I needed another $450 for an EVGA Classified.
Don't fret I'll have a score of at least a 10 come November.
But right now in Chicago it's 93F and summer is here and there is No Time to be benching.
Come fall the 32nm may be out and the same for the ATI HD5870x2s.

Well here we have a result from the new Gulftown 6cores/12threats @3.2Ghz (ES)
Not many words are needed..do we see a speed gain and a new number one..ohh Yes!!

I R drooling at that Gullftown :eek::eek::eek:
Here is a "puny" i860, with everything at stock speeds (3GHz CPU, 4GB DDR3 1333 9-9-9-24)
TXT
http://lab501.ro/wp-content/uploads/...-i860stock.jpg
After some more test on the Gulftown we have seen that the first result was not correct!
The problem was ,i have send him the 16core version and the Gulftown has 6cores/12threads..so the setting had to be changed to 12 of course!
But ok, after run the test a few times @3.8Ghz i have now the right result!
It's still a nice speed gain!
With a little tuning he much pass 11Milj. at Depth 21.

I do nothing else then trying to contact people with the last new cpu's and hope they are interested to do my test.
Now i'am busy for the Dual Gulftown...maybe soon;)

New cpu's comming with more and more cores..so it's time to make a update with a new engine -> "Cyclone xTreme II"
This engine is ready for 32cores..later updates will follow with ex. 128cores...
Test will be the same as before, but results you can't compare..you have to compare it with same engine!
I will Edit my first message in the topic and hope you can download the files there!
I will look forward to see new results with this great engine!

JPQY.. you are missing the most important thing in that list, which is dram speed. It makes all the difference here, even if it's irrelevant for most other applications.
Here's a run on my ageing Dual X5570's using the new engine:
http://database.he-computer.de/Bilde...570_chess2.jpg
Notice the Dram speed is low, because I am only using DDR3-1066 rams (which is more than enough for what I do with that machine).
Still, I am behind rge's single 950 even though the raw power of 16*3Ghz surpasses 8*4,6Ghz - simply because he's probably running DDR3-2000+ with a matching high uncore. So pelase add Dram speed to the list if you can.

you have to go to step 22 chiller with cyclone extreme II
Benching Nodes/Sec under Arena, eh? Nice.
Unfortunately, Nodes/Sec are usually not comparable across different chess engines.
Here's an exceptionally-strong engine to consider : http://www.chesslogik.com/robbolito.htm
It's not multithreaded (as of this time), but it defeats the cyclone extremes (and many others) in play. It might be a good single-core efficiency test for some of you.
XmX
Hi XmikeX..this test is not to compare different engines..is totally useless if you want to compare different systems!
So it don't matter how strong the chess engine is..you need to use same engine to make a clear compare!
I use now Cyclone Xtreme II because Norman make for me a 32core version that i'am up to date with the comming cpu's!
JP.
Thank you for the very old news.
If this is just for fun, great.
Does cyclone extreme ii scale remarkably well with 32 cores? Is it the only (free) engine that scales to 32? Its performance here has been somewhat mediocre at 4core (see below).

Q9650 MultiEngine Tournament 10/2, ponder off - Elo base 0
- 1. RobboLito_0085e4_x64.(one core).........Elo 218 Games 118 Score 76.7% Draws 19.5%

I don't think you understand what i'am doing..i have more then 100 chess engines..every week you have new releases..i have to choose one
that can use all cores and is freeware!!
If you take Rybka we can go to 2048cores..but is no freeware.
Cyclone is for me now the perfect engine to use..before it was TogaII..i can't change every week!
If this engine is bad and has very bad scaling (bud is not) ..it don't matters because all systems use the same engine, and your result will be compared
with other systems with same settings from the chess program! Very simple!
Robbolito is clearly stonger..but it's only a one core version (for the moment) . So can't test cpu at 100% and the strenght of the engine is useless in this test!
You are thinking as a chess player..here the people using it as a Bench Tool !!
Nobody have problem with it,everybody can use and run my test..so looking great to me!
And if you look how many results i get..i think people like this test also!
Ofcourse this is for fun..everybody has his hobby..you like it or don't like it..you run it or not..very simple..but don't try to find a problem!
People on this forum run all kind off benchmarks..they are very kind and support what people want to do,just a simple test..but it gives me
all the information i want to see,and it gives me a very nice list with all kind of hardware/cpu's!
If you want to talk about chess..then i would go to chess forums where i put my test results from all engines that i'am testing!
JP.
I wish all members-testers a Happy New Year 2010!!!
I get last year again nice results from many people..one thing i didn't get was the AMD Magny-cours..but i don't give up..this year we will see more 6cores cpu's
come out and i hope to see more AMD results!
We see again a very nice speed gain with the comming Westmere-ep & Gulftown cpu's...hmm my next cpu to get i think :)
Okay..Thanks all for testing, gives me alot information..and who will be my first 2010 result ;)

We have a new number one -> Monstru
He has run the test with the TogaII engine:
1) TogaII142JD-12cpu 21/49 01:35 109.964.595 14.194.821 +0.22 Gulftown 6c/12T @5.317Ghz (ES) DDR3: 8-9-8-24 Monstru New!!
Now the NDA is lifted, more results will follow...
List is updated!
JP.
Can someone provide some clear instructions on what I'm supposed to do with this thing? I don't understand what the official instructions are telling me I'm supposed to be doing, and the one time I submitted a result I got made fun of for being the only person who apparently didn't do it correctly.
Go to "Engine/Configure" and select the number of cores/threads you have. Restart the aplication. Go to Level and select "Infinite". Press spacebar and wait untill you get to 22/49. Make a screenshot. Press space again. Go to "Positions" and select "Copy to clipboard". Paste in a txt file. Attach screenshot and txt file here. Enjoy :)

Did I get this right? How'd I do?
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8345/jqpy.jpg
Best Cyclone result so far :)
No, because I used the older engine, TogaII :)
You used Cyclone Engine, the new, impproved, even better multi-CPU optimized engine, so you beat Rol-co's result, with something that looks like 163xxxxxxx, first 16 I see in this benchmark I guess. So landmark also broken. Way to go! :)
Also, if you run TogaII, you probably will beat my result too :)
Movieman ask.."Did I get this right? How'd I do?" :D
Ohh man..you have a dream chess monster for me..i didn't know at first time that you use a dual Westmere-ep setup..and thought he do a mistake in selecting the cores/threads.
But no way..you are clearly the new number one!!:up:

I have talked with movieman..and told me how he has run the test..and i know it can even better!
Thank you very much for your result!
To Particle..also many thanks ,because i know it was not easy for you..and i have put your result in my list even you have go one Depth to low (Normally need Depth 22!)
But it's a AMD result..and i have them too less!
List is updated on page 1!

here's a result for you JP
it seems that my efficiency is not that good compared to the others GT
btw idk if it's me but this apps is really sensitive to lowish vcore with an OCed CPU, you don't get a good score for your mhz unless you have enough vcore

i redid teh test, same speed/settings but i close a bunch of stuff on my OS, the difference is quite large.
Looks like it took much less time to come up with those 22 moves than the first time i used to program, is the time supposed to scale with frequency?

And like you said..when you close all programs, also running on the background, you will have a much better time..is logic when the chess engine need 100% cpu!
When you choose "Best performance" in Windows OS you will gain again a few nodes :)
Now..is the time supposed to scale with frequency? i must say,yes and no..logic higher speed ,less time he need to reach next depth..but it's not always like that, because you
have to many (for the moment endless) combinations-variations in moves he can play.
But of course the faster system will win more games then a slower system with same engine!
This is a chess game and not a fix Benchmark tool..therefore i say to people, only look to the nodes/sec. and how higher nodes/sec. you get how faster your system is with cpu using all cores/threads running @100%.
