Material and restriction. Is the block any different than the Maximus/Striker block besides the color?

are there any pics yet without the heatsink?
haven't found anything at all :(
Wait for Anandtech review
Great pics Eternal and good to see some familiar faces Slim & T.J....
Spent most of last night fitting the passive heatsinks to the board and modding my Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme heatsink backplate to miss the Fujitsu chip.
Got a touch condition to the heatsink at the top of the board and about 2mm clearance to the NB passive cooler so really hoping that it doesn't lift the sink away from the CPU otherwise I will have to mod the chipset heatsink or change the Thermalright to my Zalman CNPS9500A - Zalman backplate for this is fine without any mods.
Just wait a couple more days, then the really cheap German shops will add their stocks to the list (http://geizhals.eu/a353500.html). I'm guessing I will have one delivered to the Netherlands for € 290,- max.
Think i'll take the red cover off and bend the pins over slightly so that there is no contact to the heatpipe.
Should have the system up and running tonight.
Yeah I have my SSDs connected to the Areca. Why I brought the card in the first place is because the ICH9R on the origional Maximus Extreme I was using at the time bottlenecked my SSD to just under 100MB/s from a potential 120MB/s. Here is what I got with 2x Mtron 120MB/s on the ICH9R on ME:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...g?t=1217406438
And here is the HDTach after using the Areca:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...g?t=1217406672
However I think I was able to get the ICH9R on another board (maybe the BlackOps) to perform almost as fast as with the RAID card. So maybe Intel ironed out the SB bottlenecking the drives since last year when the issue was raised. Sorry couldn't give you a definitive answer as I've just reinstalled Vista and took forever to DL TF2 from Steam...:(
Anyway you will not regrete going with SSDs, makes you wonder how you've survived so long living with those noisy, hot, unreliable, sluggish HDDs!:up:
The block I can confirm is made out of copper (not sure about the barb though.. it is covered with paint), really heavy tbh, so should be no problem there. From what I can see the inside is just a few fat pins, and the water velocity coming into the res seems as fast as ever, so I wouldn't worry about that eighter. The RE block itself is extremely well made compaired to older ROG blocks, feels REALLY solid when I took it off reapplying TIM.

All the Rampage Extreme tech p0rn you could ever want (almost): XFastest
Indeed great to see those what were following the Maximus Extreme thread making their way to the Rampage Extreme:up::up::welcome:
rob you can try unscrewing the little red plate on the mosfet sinks (tiny screws), and slightly bend the pins touching away from heat pipes on your TRUE.
lol

Great minds ................ !
ty for the pic :)
seems like ek has to build a huge block for the sb...
btw: could u measure the distance between the nb screw holes? maybe an ek block could fit instead of the fusion block
Whys that? the big plate to the left of the SB are not in contact with anything on the MB, so all you need is an old Asus SB block.
Using my high tech ruler and amazing eyesight, the distance between the 2 screws for the Fusion block is 52.5mm, for the NB mounting holes 62mm.
ty =)
sounds good, so there won't be any problem to unmount the rollercoaster and get some sexy ek blocks :D
how do you use the tweakit function on the fly
thanks
theres a buttio for option selection, to choose fsb vcore and that stuff, then theres a switch to change the values, then theres a button for "SET" and you can see all info on a little LCD display.. same as in previous boards as ME and the ddr2 boards.
seems REALLY nice, and no more using setfsb, and you can change the vcore on the fly!! so sweet!
I suppose you already know but just in case. In order to avoid the famous 80MB/s speed cap on SSD on ICH9R you simply install you OS with the SATA mode set to RAID or ACHI (yes F6 and drivers on a floppy/USB). I have mine set to ACHI but tried RAID 0+1 as well on the ICH9R controller (however, with my Samsung F1) and I get the full 100 MB/s read performance I expect.
Guys what DDR3 would you recommend for this?
Should I go for highend 2000MhZ? I have my eye on G.Skill PI 4GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz TT (PI) Series (7-7-7-18) Dual Channel kit.
Not sure what to get. Can you please advise?
CPU will be QX9700 water cooled.
Thanks.
Got it all hooked up last night but tweaking time was limited. Vista install on current boot disk worked fine just needed Intel drivers and re-activation. So far blown away from bios options even after moving from Striker II Extreme. Could do with someone posting settings for 450x9 1800 sync & linked - It looks like you can now load bios settings from floppy or mem stick !.
PS - Can the pulsating light show of the buttons and Asus emblem be switched off ?....

Good question MnM - I'm looking to change my 4x1Gb OCZ sticks ro 2x2Gb ??????????.
The Super Talent Project X looks competitive on paper but really need feedback from experiences on this board as don't want to have to buy a third set !!!.
Well, i just couldnt resist in the end - especially with the problems ive been having with my striker II extreme over the last few weeks! Should arrive tomorrow. Oh, and for anyone in the UK, check out scan - they now have it, and its cheaper than OCUK -
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=856997
The G.Skill should be great, the reviews on this forum and around the web has been very positive. I'm waiting for the HZ series, without the huge heat spreader..
I have been playing with my turd of a E8400, which I had previously only able to reach 575Mhz on the S2E, but on the RE it went over 600Mhz FSB!
I got it prime stable at 570x7, and was posible with only a slight raise of the NB voltage. (Don't mind the high VCore, as I said this CPU sucks..)
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...70x7stable.jpg
I'll put in my QX9650 later on and see what I get, although it will be very different settings with you using 4x1GB and OCZ memory with Samsung chips...
2 way of turning the pulsating light off.. pull the light from the MB socket or switch your PSU off :ROTF: Don't think there is a BIOS option for it.. it may be hardwire/coded into the motherboard to get it working even when the MB is turned off.
As I said before the G.Skill PI series seems to be quite cheap and are Micron IC based.. at least they were.
Welcome onboard!! you will fall in love with the board in no time.
Some thought about this board at the moment:
The good:
It does amazing high FSBs even with crappy hardware
My CellShock 1800 D9GTR kits are absolutely loving this board, and vice versa
Heatpipes keep *most* component cool on the MB
The bad:
Using the onboard Fusion block keeps most of the components cool, except the NB... the design is that heat have to travel through layres of material that is kinda stuck together with a glue gun...:
----------------
Fusion block
copper plate
3 heatpipes side by side
copper plate
North Bridge
----------------
The design is extremely inefficient (it's like the heat have to travel through a sausage roll to get to the water block:shakes:), and although the fusion block feels cool to the touch, the NB was at 56C at 1.5V. And thats with reseated sinks with MX-2 applied. My Maximus Extreme with Mips block keeps the NB under 47C at 1.7V...
My CellShock blue 1866 D9JNL sticks hates the RE, or the otherway around... but probably due to early BIOS. Can not get it to enter Windows without BSOD/restart.
it doesnt seem as they are shipping outside UK? doesnt look like that :( or do they?
You can try asking at the Scan forum:

There are always pretty quick to reply.
Nice results Eternal Fantasy - that's a great FSB :D !!! - will be interesting to see your 9650 results.
Had problems getting mine to boot at 450x8 (I know the CPU is good for 4100Hz so 450x9 will be normal until 500x8 holy grail is reached) with relaxed timings to get memory running at 1800 - I think it is due to perhaps me missing a bios option as it is quite different from the SIIE. Any bios settings that you had to change would be useful :)

Just put in my QX9650 and booted into windows with 450x9:

Some quick & dirty voltage settings:
VCore 1.45V
VNB 1.5V
PLL 1.2V
VTT 1.35V
VDimm 2.0V
Strap 333
Clock Twister Moderate
The-one-below-clocktwister AUTO
Try with 2 sticks of ram first, then add the rest when you get it stable.
I'll be tightening things and see how high my 9650 will go FSB wise:D
Thanks Eternal Fantasy
Will have some time this evening when I get home - great settings and at 1T command rate too !. I am really begining to think that my 4x1Gb sticks are holding me back. Looking into what 2x2Gb memory kit to buy in the UK that will hit 2000Hz. Need to check the manual to see if the white or blue sockets are preferred when using 2 sticks.
Some background history of my QX9650...
Brought it last year when it was first avaliable in the UK, and it's been in a Striker II Extreme, Maximus Extreme, Maximus Formula, BlockOps, EVGA 790i, and now finally in the Rampage Extreme.
The highest FSB I was able to get in these motherboards:
Maximus Extreme - 458
Maximus Formula - 456
BlackOps - 440
EVGA 790i - 425
Striker II Extreme - no idea, system file corrupted whenever overclocked:brick:
Now I thought the pinnicle of my 9650's FSB should be around 460, which I thought was OK ish.
Then came the Rampage Extreme.
As per my previous post, RE handled 450FSB without problem.
Then I tried stright to 470Mhz for laughs:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d.../470x8quad.jpg
Hmm intresting I thought.
then 480Mhz
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d.../480x8quad.jpg
:shocked::shocked: pretty much sums up what I had in mind.
But what the hell, might as well try 490Mhz....
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d.../490x8quad.jpg
:party::party::shoot::banana::banana::bounces: :rocker:
And all voltage are within safe limits for watercooling, maybe even on air, and I hadn't even touched the skew and GTL settings etc :D:D:D
I can confidently say, even at this early point that it has to be the best motherboard I have ever used (all my mobos in sig), in it's ease of overclocking, cooling, and stability. Well done ASUS!!:bows::bows::bows:
More results to follow!
First I will try and push all my hardware to the limits and see how far they'll go, then an hour or two of ORTHOS blend and I'm happy for my 24/7 settings. I don't have any mission critical tasks to perform on my PC, and 2 hours of priming will be more then enough to ensure stable gaming. Also it's frigin hot here in london and I see no reason to have a 500W heater on full power for days to create a sauna out of my room...
But please, post back on how you get on with the prime marathon.:)
@eternal_fantasy - Nice clocks! Good to know that the Rampage is so much better than the eVGA 790i. I will be upgrading as soon as this board becomes available on this side of the pond.
Eternal - WOW! Great results... now im seriously looking forward to getting this board. My QX9650 will do 445FSB on the S2E at 1.35v vcore so im really looking forward to seeing what it can do on the RE. Roll on tomorrow!!! :D
One quick question - u mention about the 'sandwich' cooling solution with the fusion block. Do u think its actually worth using this then? Do u know what your temps were with the passive solution? Just wondering if its worth the effort. I take it you cant watercool the NB with a different block without replacing all the cooling for the SB/PWM's etc.
Oh, and yeah... its way too hot in London atm.. my PC room is roasting even when im just surfing the net lol!
is there any way or any where I can just buy that heat sink (in red circle) I want that to be on my maximus II formula. If anyone selling that please let me know.
Should be soon now... good luck
I went stright to water cooling when I got my board, so no idea how the air cooling will be, but I can't imagine how watercooling will be worse off compared to air. They both attach to the same copper plate. I have also thought of using my own waterblocks, but that means you need to replace the mosfet of the CPU area and the NB (I guess you can stick some ramsinks on those) and the SB... maybe EK will release a block that cools the NB and its mosfets?:D
I don't want to argue about how you define a 24/7 stable OC and the FSB you reached is indeed great. However, these FSB are not exceptional with other motherboards (I know for sure on the WS Evolution) and a QX9650 especially with the 4/5 memory divider. Please don't get me wrong but if the settings are only stable to check email and post a SS what's the use (I know it is preliminary tests). As mentioned my point is, it puts a lot more stress on the MB (and naturally the memory) to use the 1:2 memory divider. Therefore to me a FSB of 450+ is only really impressive with memory running DDR 1800 (and preferably 2x2 GB of memory). For instance my MB can prime for 10-20 h at 9x445 but will crap out within minutes in a game. At 426x9.5 I can Prime for 70 h (even I know that is excessive:p:) and games run perfect. If I use the 4/5 memory divider and FSB around 450 games are fine but performance sucks. I would love to see the RE handle FSB 450+ with 2x2GB memory 1:2.
I really don't mean to be a party pooper and I sincerely appreciate your tests with your QX9650, but I am not so excited before I have seen som Orthos/OCCT/Prime/game stability with memory running synced
BTW I use my PC for scientific work sometimes so I require another level of stability.
Believe it or not, I'm not an Asus employee, and am not trying to impress or showoff what I brought in an attempt to "impress" you into buying the board. To be honest I really couldn't care less. However what I CAN and are happy to do is to try and answer reasonable questions, and try reasonable settings on the board. What I will not do is put my newly installed rig out of commission (try gaming while priming) for a day, sucking juice out of my wall socket, in an attempt to impress a guy over the internet, so he can make up his mind, and be confident about his purchase. As I said before, what you do with your own system is your business, and I will be helpful if the request is resonable. When was the last time you saw an online review site show you a screenshot of a 24H+ primed stable overclocked system? If they won't do it even when they get paied, I as hell won't.
FYI my system is running fine 470x8.5 1:2 1880Mhz mem, played TF2 for 3 hours absolutely fine.
No hard feelings btw, its just how I do things... maybe you can get one of the others that has the board to test it for you.
Hay ladies and gentleman of this thread, please make your way to 3oh6's "Live MB OC Report :: ASUS Rampage Extreme", so we can keep all our info together for the Rampage Extreme motherboard.
Will be a huge asset for us with such knowledgeable guy as 3oh6, and the Intel page seems very much more alive then the review page :D
Anyway HEAD OVER THERE NOW!!!!
All follow up posts will be on that thread---

does anyone else's rampage extreme ROG light and start button flash on and off when your shutdown ?
Mine doesn...just wondered if it's normal. My striker II extreme ROG light stayed on all the time.
Yeah when I shut down, my ROG light and power/reset buttons also stay on.
I dont like it much, but oh well.
but mine dont stay on permanently, they flash on and off !
I wouldnt be able to say anything. I dont own the rampage extreme.
This board is available at Newegg now for an astounding $400! To all the Evolution users that have this as well - is it worth getting this if you have the Evolution already? If your looking to get one of them, is it worth the extra money to get the Rampage Extreme??

SOS:
I have removed the entire Asus heatsink for use Artic Silver and I have off many little washers, which have the heatsink in each screw hole (very littles and blacks) But now i count washers and i have one more than holes free! Does anyone know what hole should have two washers instead of one?
Thanks!
This heatsink sucks. I had the Maximus II Formula with only the back washers trick and i had 43º in NB. Now with my Rampage, washers trick, AS and this heatsink i have 47º.
umh guys,
i have a problem with heat of this chipset... i used the liquid cooling with the fusion block of this mobo but @ default the temperature are 42 degrees.... with air cooling around 53 degrees.... its normal??
i tryed 1,65vNB with liquido and chipset was @ 65 degress..............................
ofc ???
I know this is going to sound dumb, but what is the red wire that coms out of the NB heat sinks ans plugs into the boars where it sais rog? is this heat sink fan?
It's for the LED light underneath the ROG logo on the NB.
i set DRAM 2.0v in BIOS,but it always shows 1.80v,how to make it?
hello guys,
if i use 400 strap, for example 600mhz fsb ram @1800mhz why windows show 1000 mhz on ram ?
windows shows 3:5 but bios 2:3...its a bug ?
if your using 0404 BIOS then that is it, go back to 0403. if not, then i don't know.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=199241 - all you need to know about it.
thx@all
another question :) :
i have my sistem working on a benching table and yesterday i was trying to resolve a problem with some cables and i touched the rear of my motherboard causing the sistem reset, i tryed to touch pcb andmove it casusing another reset.. can be a ground problem ? i have the motherboard on the benching table without all support for the motherboardand maybe if someone is miss can cause that ??
or can be ?
Not sure if you were still deciding, but I got 2 retail kits of ProjectX (the 7-6-6-x 1600Mhz and the 7-7-7-x 1800Mhz). Both are D9GTR and both have overclocked really well. I recommend them to anyone! the 1600mhz kit can hit @ 2.05v - 917MHz 7-6-6-18 1T (P1 & P2 enabled on the 790i), but CAS8 clocks really dont impress. The 1800Mhz kit can do @ 2.05v - 963Mhz 7-7-6-18 1T, or @2.075v - 1040Mhz 8-8-7-21 1T.
Stability for me is 32M, not prime95 or anything...
It looks .. so pretty. O-o ...
I need me one of those. (Nice results by the way mate.)
i have an 8600 with this board.
i have core 0 and core 1.
which is the setting CPU GTL for the cpu 1 ? (its the second core )
hey guys,
just got the board, and it powers off randomly.. took a look at the bios.
checked temp settings and found out that the NB was at 75C in bios.. the heatsink is not even hot at all, anybody with same problem..?
flashed til 0301 now, same :banana::banana::banana:...
@aerie; I also had this happen, but it just went into an endless reboot cycle. I have it open on my desk for benching and was placing some fans when it just went bananas. Only way I could get it back was to pull the battery, have dinner + a couple slurps. Now I'm back in. Don't know what the heck happened.
:( now I am a little scared successive post with problems with the Rampage Extreme I already have the motherboard just waiting for the other parts to arrive
just want to ask does anybody know what DDR3 Kits over@locker886 is using? I know its a Micron D9JNM chip but what brand? i know you need a little luck to get DDR3 modules that good but just want to ask :)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=195122
Maybe its related, but I had the light behind the confirm button go out and stay out when the others were on. I guessed it was a faulty switch (although the switch still worked fine) I then did a clear CMOS (button on the backplate) and it came back on and has stayed working. Maybe it was coincidence, but its odd it came back after a clear CMOS.
You can stop the ROG logo flashing when its off using the BIOS (404) setting Advanced/LCD Poster+LED Control/ROG Logo
http://www.hwmania.org/forum/imageho...ec22715a40.jpg
THIS IS MY PROBLEM OF RESET,
i have my system mounted on a benching table and i found that if i touch with my finger those 2 contact the sistem RESET. not always but if i touch those sometimes it Reset, i have tryed 4-5 times and after 2-3 touch sistem reset!!
what can be ??
quite nice review elmor ...
any new on the LLC issue?
with 0501 and a E8600 i cant give more than 1.80000V in bios without issues with LLC enabled..

I am very interested in a DDR3 based x48 ASUS. I am looking at either this or the P5E64-WS Workstation version. What can you guys say inpraise of this compared to the P5E3 or WS versions? I plan to OC a Q9550 and OC'd DDR1800, and later mess w/ DDR2000. Can I get a quick recap on teh pros and cons of this mobo?
Thanx in advance!
