painkilla: I did exactly what you said, but after I set the clock to 800 and close AMD clock tool and load the profile it doesn't speed the fan up.
Does Flashing the BIOS void the warranty of those cards? I mean, has any of you tried to RMA it after BIOS flashing and got the answer "bugger off"?
flashing a bios on any ati card voids the warranty, only evga lets you mess around as long as you don't physically damage the card. but I believe if the cause of your card dying is the bios flash you did, you should not rma from an honest stand point, but even if you flashed the bios and the reason for your card dying is someting else than you should just rma the card, and one thing for sure, if you told them you flashed the bios and got real honest they would most likly hit you in the head with a hammer and wont honor your warranty, if you flash it back to original bios and send it back, I am sure you will be fine.
So did he just make it up or what?!
I can't seem to set the clocks for my second card anymore with AMD GPU tool. It says set clock failed when i try to do the second card
i have to say i do have prblems enabling it right now after enabling OC and got fanspeed up. Then quit reset OC and start fanprofile for lowspeed fan. Sinds then i cant enable the fanspeed after OC. I can tell i works wonders but just not always. Il post images soon of it working

the funny thing is i got it from this forum. Just dont know which thread something with gpu-z in the title.
it worked again this time. i did the following:
1. enable OC with amd gpu tool
2. load fanspeed profile without closing amd tool.
810/1025 with 70% fanspeed profile
http://i33.tinypic.com/2cgkggj.png
and a 820/1050 OC with 45% fanspeed with amd tool still open:
http://i37.tinypic.com/29qgv9s.png
So are you gonna have to leave AMD Tool open? or will it save the settings?
the strange thing is i can load amd tool and apply settings and it doesnt matter if i close or open it the fanprofile of cc always works. :/ Only have to find a way to "break" it again till it doesnt work. But cold boot , apply amd tool settings, close or leave it open while loading ccc fan speedprofile does the trick for me.
Can you show a picture of the Overdrive menu in CCC?
http://i34.tinypic.com/14n1dky.png
looks like ccc finds my profile not completely valid. The ccc turns normal when i use "use default clocks" in amd tool.
i uploaded my fan profile xml file. maybe you can use it someway.
Still doesn't work for me :/
Me neither! Painkilla, this is with a 4870 with a stock cooler and an unmodified bios correct? Which drivers are you using? That's the only thing I can think of not making this work for the rest of us.

Does those really work??
just like in bios no voltage adjustors do not work
i use
- 8.7 beta
- Vista 64 sp1
- stock bios
no modding whatsoever just the ccc profile. I installed amd tool before ccc i belief. I didnt mod voltages or anything in ccc. i only set fanspeed on manual and remove the stock speed part in my profile nothing else.
What else hmm o yeah i took stock cooler off and replaced it with accelero but didnt fid very well so installed stock cooler back.
so you tried my profile?
Hmm.. Perhaps it's a 8.7 beta thing? Unfortunately my system doesn't like the 8.7 beta's. I've never yearned so hard for new ATi drivers to be released.
Crysis 1680x1050, Dx9, HIGH, no AA, AFx4:

with "some" artifacts :p::p:
artifacts can eventually kill your card or dont go away which is basicly the same as killing the card.
Is anyone having problems with drivers crashing in games when overclocking the card? I have it completely stable and artifact free in ati tool for 5 mins http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3213/...41fac0_b_d.jpg
like after playing a game for 2 minutes the drivers crash and have to recover or the system reboots. I'm wondering if its an issue with my power supply.
Same here at 790/1100. I play like 20 mins of Crysis, even more sometimes and it just locks up, screen goes blank then some crazy coloured squares appear on the screen -> reboot required. There are no artifacts during gameplay though. I think it might be voltage related as my temps are no problem.
I think you guys have your ram too high. Try and set your ram 1050 or less and see if you still get the crashes. If not you may be able to raise your core a bit, say up to 820-840 without issue.
vcore is 1.47 on load, heh I can only get like 840 stock vcore. I can actually do 900 fine too I was down to 880 cause I want stability but its just not happening except
I'm thinking its my PSU I have a 600 watt ocz gamextreme and the PSU has been acting funny occt reports my 5v line is kinda low like 4.5 v but my multimeter shows it at 4.99 volts. The sata power connectors don't work so I have 5 hds hooked up with molex to sata connectors. 5 hdd + overclocked 4870 + overclocked q6600 + dvd burner + assload of fans in an antec 900 = close to 600 watts. I ordered a corsair hx1000w so I hope that fixes it.
My system reboots almost guaranteed on firefly forest in 3dmark06 even with the ram at 900 mhz. Highest I can go without reboots is like 840/900 which I can do on stock volts. I voltmodded the memory too but I have no idea what the actual volts are to the memory or whats recommended. The pic for the spot for measuring mem voltage on techpowerup shows up on my multimeter at 1.5v which is what it was at stock too  I'll experiment with it more when my new PSU comes in.
I had my Visiontek 4870 up to 840\1100 but it just gets way to hot. 790\1100 is no problem though with the fan set at 75%. As soon as a program comes out to control the fan speed\clocks independently above what CCC offers I think we're going to some great overclocks on these cards. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to flash a modded BIOS but am reading up on it. I just worry about having to try to recover from a bad flash.
Seeing what someone said in this tread about RAM degrading I have had no artifacts or crashes so far when pushing the memory to 1100Mhz. Likely its more card\memory manufacturer dependent than anything.
I could see that happening but why wouldn't 5 min of ati tool not cause a reboot or driver crash and the first 3dmark 06 test not cause it but not until it gets 2 seconds into firefly forest. I can actually run 3dmark06 at those core clocks but I have to downclock my ram to 800 mhz.
How high do you guys think I could take this? I'm at 870mhz with the fan set at 45% and I'm my average temp is 57c under load. I know that heat shouldn't be an issue since it runs around 80c idle with the default fan configuration. I haven't screwed with the bios or have any volt mods. So what do you guys think? How high should I try?
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...0overclock.jpg
Update: Well this isn't as stable as I thought. I think maybe the problem is my psu. It's running f@h just fine loaded out at 870mhz, but as soon as I try to run furmark my machine reboots. I'll dial it back a bit and try again and update in just a bit.
Update #2: 850/1100 is stable with 3dmark06 and 57c load.
What do you think guys. Should i buy HD4870 or HD4850? I'm gona do the vmods anyway. But just wanted to know if extra 100$ is worth it? Almost every HD4850 will get 900mhz+core and 1200mhz mem with volt mods and decent cooling (i have Thermalright HR-03 GT already on table waiting). How much higher will the HD4870 core clock with better power phase go? I know that GDDR5 is quite good when OC, but so is GDDR3 @1200 and low timings.
That is good to know. I'm stable at 850/1100 with 3dmark06 (will try vantage later) and the temps are under 60c load with the fan at 45%. I'll go back and try 870 again and check stability with 3dmark06 and vantage and see how that goes. I'll probably run the crysis benchmark to check for stability as well. Thanks for the info.
ugh guys bad news, both my voltmodded 4870's work but my PSU just died :(:(:( stupid tx750 is great for everyone else except me, i have had 3 of them die. the guy at tech support said that he has less than 1% of the 750's returned so that means i probably makeup 75% of that 1% with my returns alone
even though i got load temps of 44C @ 825/1050 with my hr03 on 4870 i just cant get any higher. Core 830 gives some artifacts and memory @ 1075 give artifacts after some time :( I really think its a voltage thing. I guess it isnt possible to get any higher with bios editing?
A couple of times in AMD GPU Clock Tool i saw someone here with
PCIE Status :
Link Width : X16
Link Speed : 15GT/s
ASPM : None
Is there a way to change it ?
My CF 4870 are on 5 GT/s Link Speed and i don't know if it's allright or no
Because i feel that scoring 19750 Marks in 3dM06 is a bit low isn't it
Thanks, any help welcome
Yes, the limit of the 4870 core should be around 870 even i can keep the temp as low as 30C full load. it should be more than 950 if some voltage is added. RBE bios editor showed default voltage is 1.263V!
If voltage increased to 1.3V, it should be stable at core 950!
hope someone here to discover how to increase voltage successfully through the bios modification^^
Attachment 82391
Attachment 82390
Core tops out at 850 (Atitool artifact test), memory can do 1100 easy.
Has anyone noticed whistling caps on their 4870? My Sapphire 4870 has been doing that since day 1.
Cooled by MCW60 and 90mm fan blowing over ram & vregs.
Crysis is good to use in terms of giving the GPU a good thrashing short of Vantage.
If you haven't done any BIOS modding, how are you setting your fan speed manually but going over 790 mhz on the core? From what I've gathered through XS and various other sources, the only way to use AMDGPUTool to clock higher than Catalyst Overdrive will let you, and keep your fan profile settings, is to mod the BIOS to set your fan speeds properly. Maybe I missed something but I wanted to be sure.
I overclock with the AMDGPUTool and then load the fan profile via the ATI icon. Just right click on it and then activate profile. This will allow you to overclock and have the fan without the CCC overdrive screwing it up. It might now work for everybody but it works for me.
Testing again with 840/1100 - Crysis bench - temps under 60c (fan 45%)

850/1000 biosflashed.
no modds.
watercooled temps around 36cidle and 40c load.
cant go higher than 850 but there it has been fine with games and 3dmarks.
a volt modd is likely needed to get where I wanna be ;)
I have huge problems with LOD and 3DMark06:
I got some weird results: Same 790/1000 and Q6600@4000mhz and I get with SAME clock from 16300 to 18255 points. What is the problem? And LOD doesn't work sometimes (I use Ati tool) Any body knows where the problem is?
Does AMD GPU Clock tool work with two cards and 8.7 beta? I get SET CLOCK FAILED for the second card.
Anybody here running the HD4870 on a 500W PSU? I want the 4870 but I'm not sure if my Antec EA500D 500W PSU is up to the task. I have 1 DVD-RW and 1 HDD, 4GB DDR2 800 RAM, E8400, and Antec 900 with the 4 stock fans.
Yes but very rarly, for instance only during the loading screen in Black and White 2 where it does 3000fps. Oh another place is when I scroll huge images in ACDsee, I have Sapphire as well.
Well my maximum power consumption from the wall is 330w, so at ~83% efficiency the PSU outputs 274w.
that's with
E6400 @ 3.2GHz 1.55vcore
2GB ram
2HDs, DVD
5 120mm fans
Audigy 2 ex
Corsair HX620
So you're saying it should work then?
I just ordered the VisionTek HD4870 512mb GDDR5 for $269.99 + $5.99 ground shipping + $8.10 ExpressRMA insurance - $20 Mail-in Rebate from NCIX.com (Canada). It's a special deal on today.
Yes I would say so, 500w is more than enough since you won't be close to maxing it out anyway.
On topic, running mine at 790/4400, can't be bothered with bios flashing or amd gpu clock tool
I had a PSU issue with my 4870 running an OCZ 520, but I'm also running 5 x 3.5" HDDs, 2 x ODD, 12v pump, 4 120m fans.
I realized power was my issue when one of the 4 LEDs on the back of the card lit up when stressing out the card. These LEDs on the back of the card are a great addition when troubleshooting.
Oh and this PSU would probably be ok for a stock machine w/above config, but we all dont live in the stock room.
Can anyone confirm the safe max operating temps for the HD4870 PWM's?
I presume the max is somewhere at 110 , but the less the better, i managed to keep it under 70 , with stock is 70 ~ 95 , so be carefull with this. I'd presume keep it under 80
CPU = Q6600 @ 3.6GHz; ATI 4870 790/1100
Vantage Scores:
P9,106
CPU = 12,241
GPU = 8,390
http://service.futuremark.com/home.a...&resultType=19
Damn annoying CCC profile load stops working for me @ 820/1100... dont wont do go further without proper speed on fan :/ Well well no artifacts in 3dmark atleast.
3dmark06 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7601202. q6600@3800, 4870@820/1100, should get more dont know whats up. Im a noob when it comes to tweaking.
Yeah I don't get it, my old 8800GT got 14,302 in 3dmark06, and my 4870 only gets like 14,600ish...... guess really not optimized for it.
Thats about what I get with a quad at 3.8Ghz, and the card at 850/1050. Vista x64 stole 600 points of my CPU score though, I get >5900 in 32 bit XP.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7562343
I guess in 06 it's pretty hard to go faster with a 3.8Ghz Kentsfield. Raising clocks on the card from 750 to 850 didnt do much at all. Can anyone confirm?
Hey guys, would any of you be kind enough to upload me a modded and working 4870 BIOS? I flashed it myself but (even with the 100+k BIOS) it wouldn't POST.
Is it possible to raise voltages (even a little bit) with the BIOS? Modded fan settings + raised voltages would be awesome. Thanks.
damn im happy, mounted an arctic cooler accelero with 2x 120 fans and damn that thing is awesome. from 80c idling to 36c idling and from 90c+ load to 50c(with furmark, lower with games) load at lowest possible speed on fan = silent or as the stock cooler at standard idling. :D:D
edit: noticed with everest that the gpu vrm temp was high as 126c with furmark.. thats alot , how much can they handle?
you'll want the latest version of Everest. i heard the older ones don't read the VRM temps correctly. only the latest beta does.
hmm installed everest 4.50 1448 beta and it shows kinda same :/ well well when gaming it seems VRM temps is stable from 95-87c though.
4.50 beta 1454 is the one that supposedly reads the VRM's correctly. i don't have it so i can't confirm. i'm just repeating what i read on Rage3D.
I just tested with 4.50 beta 1460 and my VRM is still über high. 125°C with Furmark.
I have the Accelero S1 with Zalman heatsinks on the VRM´s and an 80mm blowing at ~3700rpm right on top of them.
4850 and 70 would proppably need a bigger heatsink and then you can blow cold air on them , something that's 2x2 cm can't be cooled propperly, my heatinks on PWM's were 1.5 x 8 cm, that was enough to keep it under around 80 degrees in FurMark. Cooling an bug is just an placebo effect
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with that problem. I'm using a Biostar IP45 mobo with a pair of 4870 in Crossfire. Card in slot 0 gets the same "fail" message but the card in slot 1 clocks up without any problem. Is there a driver version that works better with AMD GPU Clock Tool? Is there another GPU overclocking utility I should try?
That's easy, tur of OCing in CCC and OC only in AMD GPU Tool, i could put both cards to 800/1100 , but with CCC OC activated i clould set both cards propperly, just one
I'm confused. Which driver is the best then, the official 8.7 release, or the 8.7beta? Also, does 8.7 fix the fan control?
tbh i had most sucess with 8.7 beta because theyr driver is newer than that in the 8.7 final, but someone says 8.6 hotfixed is better for them .. Try both of them, or all three of them
so whats everyone using for 4870 crossfire overclocking apart from CCC?
look around on the forums for Asus 4870 bios in the bios mods section the CCC limit on that is upped to 900 on core and 1100 on memory and 1 member showed a screenshot of theres at 885/1075.
That shows alot of promise to me specially with how big of an improvement overclocking brings. 1 review of it showed a 12% oc gave like almost even gain or something like that.
How can i overclock (+800 on core) with the fan at custom speed?
I tried 830mhz with automatic rpms and 3dmark '06 crashes with the high temps
Is ATI Tool still a good utility for stress testing new GPUs?
for those that want to OC high and have an aggressive fan profile, just flash to the new Asus OC BIOS. it comes stock at 815/925 and lets Overdrive go up to 900/1100. the fanspeed profile will keep your GPU at or around 60° at all times.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=196551
so I flashed the asus top bios and got my cards going at 885/1075 (vmodded of course) and I was able to pull this beauty out of my hat. :D
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7643192
It's the highest O6 score on vista for 4870's that isnt a qx9650. Seeing as I don't have $800 (ebay) for one of those, I am extremely pleased with my result. (I even beat some qx9650's as well)
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6702/verifffk9.jpg
sorry for large size ;)
Very nice! This reminds me of when i volt-modded my 3870 to get the core up to 980 which resulted in just under 14k in 3dmark06.
this brings hope, I'm tellin u guys, if you want to push this puppy, gotta volt mod it, that's what the 55nm die is all about!
But I think i'm just gonna wait and return my Gx2 for the 4870x2 ^.^
Just flashed my cards with the ASUS bios but set stock clocks to 825/1000, running much cooler but still fairly quite :)
what are safe voltages for GPU?
what sort of voltages are ppl using to get to 875-900mhz?
update on my temps. i ran GRID in a very warm room today (82°F or 28°C) and my cards ran at 72°C with the fans going at 3200 RPM. still very quiet. i didn't check the percentage, but it was obviously lower than 45% because i know what that sounds like. i just want to reiterate how much i like this fan profile.
So here has been my project its been fun taken me a couple days to tear everything down and do my first watercool build. Was fun I am a bit of a perfectionist so... took me a while wanted to share my card results with you guys and some pics ;-) here they are

and now after the water cool running furmark stable no crashing VRM is still up there but it was flaoting between 124 and 126 and who knows if everest is right or if gpu-z is recording the right temps. comparing the gpu-z temps tho its incredible results running at 790 clock 1080 memory just from CCC now time to voltmod see how far I can take this card. all results are in 80F ambient temperature room!

yeah I fudged up links I edited them I had last 2 shots the same as well sorry bout that fixed now.
looks great man, if you want any voltmod pics check the worklog in my sig ;)
Thanks man ill take a look :-)
This is what i managed with volt modded 4870s in CF. Artifact free of course :). I'd like to see more, but they won't give it to me!

WoW nice clock on the GPU there what kinda temps you running ? and what voltages you using?
