AMD dual socket thread

Hi yankee! I'm familiar with bar edit :)

About the 266MHz problem, I find it strange, I had it running once totally stable in dual channel mode, it might be a fluke, but I do not believe so.

I have tested a little further, and can boot into windows with 266 memclk mode, but not stable yet.

It might have to do with channel clock skew, but there is quite a lot of options. I have only tested the extremes yet. My theory is that the board/bios chose the right level of channel clock skew the one time I had it stable, it was set to auto setting at the time.
I just need to find the right setting again.

Also.. Enabling tristating seems to give better stability with 266 mode (seems to, mind you :p:)

I also thought about Clock screw :) and i tried a lot of choises but we have almost 18^4 choises :confused:... considering that every bank of channels have 18 choises....
I had no luck....
You are right about the tristate mem clock set, it increases the overall stability, but it's not enough to make the system usable (even bootable).
Let's find a way to solve this issue... ;)

That MSI Speedster board does look nice. In fact, it looks a lot better than Asus'

Personally speaking, I dislike AMD's server solution due to a factor which is that AMD does not have their own inhouse chipset for sever boards. Well, they do have one now but it is not widely used. Majority of Opty sever mobo uses Nvidia chipsets which put out a lot of extra heat. (Which seems to be what Nvidia is good at... Inefficient chipsets.)

Does that MSI board support s1207 opty B3 out of box? Or does it need BIOS update?

It needs a update. I like the extra ram slots yes, wonder how the Speedster II performs. *checks out google for tests*

Probably less than one higher clocked phenom I'm afraid. Have not tested 3dm06 yet, but opened the app and it only listed one cpu..

Power of DP system is in rendering and crunching (= Folding / WCGing) for majority of us.

Gaming on DP system is likely less impressive than a single processor with high clock. When 8-hour render takes 4 hours on DP system, one knows what to go for.

I got a pair of Opteron 866's in the mail yesterday:)

They run at (AFAIK) 2x2.2GHz, so they're equal to the 875's, except that they're quite old. I wonder what CPUZ will report when I try them.

Yankee: Got the solution for memclk 266. It is easy, too easy for spotting it at once as it was very obvious.

Trfc is set too tight on memslot1. It is set to 75ns, and needs to be higher (105ns works fine for me). So as long as you can boot into win, wich is doable if I enable tristating and disabling rank interleaving.

This is a problem with many boards, especially the Abit AX78 wich I had earlier.

One "not so positive" thing: Clockgen freezes my system if I try to increase HTT by 1 above 250. Then I need another way of overclocking beyond 250HTT

Why didn't (auto)manual set it to the loosen value???

It is one of the biggest problems with K10 and ram compatability both for socket F and AM2/AM2+, strange that mb vendors have not fixed it yet.

I tried every setting in bios but I'm still not able to boot to desktop with
266 mem divider to change the trfc...
Now I'm checking if it is possible to change the SPD flash rom via Vista x64, otherwise i'll have to try via XP64.
The only thing which scares me is settings for SPD, i mean:
Even if i set personal configuration for memory modules, when i'll set the bios to manual (not limit) it will override the SPD data by choosing values itself...
How to fix it???
Plus after checking the SPD data inside my ram modules i found that ram dimms will run at 4-4-4-12 with the 266 divisor (6-6-6-25 for 400), so what kind of timings i'll have to set for the 266 divisor??? maybe 5-5-5-18??

I can boot with 266memclk and "limit" setting for cl 4 4 4 12 1t timings, my system bluescreens one third of attempted boots though, wich implies inconsistent timings set. I am not sure if flashing SPD will help you.

memory compatability ok? Seeing you're running 800MHz. 8*1gb sticks or 4*2gb?

no problems....it's 8x1GB micron pc2-667 reg ecc ram

i ran cinebenc hagain on same settings but without any programs running in background.....

i got nearly the same performance as likmark but his opterons are clocked at 2375mhz vs. 2000mhz on my opterons.

i wonder if the l1n64 is so much "slower" compared to a nforce3600 board?
or is this only due to the tlb-patch?

I believe my cpu #2 is using TLB patch, and it only uses ht link 200mhz. Furthermore my nb runs at 1400MHz at stock. It is however probably memory performance that kills performance for me. I believe your setup uses NUMA too. My setup is running lower mem freqs and half the memory. Nice result!

Could you do some everest memory benches too? That would confirm my suspicions I think.

with newest bios i was able to up the fsb via clockgen...but only step by step...

I'm not sure how high it will go - i haven't got my system set up yet. The fact it says "Free Form" in PBE suggests you can just type in any number you want. Whether it will boot with the overclock is another issue :)

what the heck does that mean its not even a answer to my question besides that bios page has not been updated in about a year i also asked about the ws/b issues and i didnt get a response yet, theirs no excuse for that bios and they're legit problems with it. so please if you have this board ws or ws/b please contact them to correct these issues, we have to get some kind of tech support not just these copy paste responses we have had to deal with.

i have a problem with the bios nothing that i set in the bios applies when i exit and save. i cant set
the cpu vcore, change the htt or ht multi, also can memory timings be included so that they can be
changed manually. the curret bios is setting the timings to tight on different mem dividers. also the
overvoltage settings dont apply when set to any other than auto

i wish asus would add the additional timings because the only way to overclock this board with high htt is when you lower the memory div to 667 or 533 and 800 is a no once you start getting near 1170mhz

Hey MsiMax, how did you reached 330 HTT speed with nTune???
Did you use a modded version of it?
I thought that the limit was 250 for nTune...
PS: I also sent some msgs to aSuS and still no response... I think we won't have any new bios for our "enthusiast board", yeah... it was supposed to be enthusiast... and no support....

One more question:
Is there any relation between registers and bios data???
especially: is there any way to edit the registers permanently by editing something in bios code like the bios registers...

ntune will work upto 250 unless you have higher in the bios which is why i wanted to see if we can edit the config file to raise the limit

If so, what BIOS and am I going to have to pick up a DC opty (or send it to someone) to flash it over?

It will (with the 2.xx BIOS) BUT you will have to replace the BIOS chip with a WINBOND W39V080APZ, so you will also need a dual-core and do a hot-flash. Easiest option (if you want to go straight to quad-cores) is to pay an extra fiver and get a pre-flashed chip - I'm going to get mine from www.bios-repair.co.uk but I'm sure you can find someone local who stocks them and offers a flashing service.

EDIT: Alternatively, I am going to be using dual-cores to start with and could send you a flashed chip at cost price. Will still be a couple of weeks before my system is up and running, though.

Cause I ordered it. Least this has a bit of roadmap to it, I can hold out for a decent while...

Finding pairs of quads for pretty cheap, and I have a pair of 8800 GTS cards for it, should make a decent rig...

I found a turnaround to solve the 533 and 800 mem dividers...
The OSs capable of booting with these memory settings are only 32bts OS based systems...
I tried to run the OpenSuSE 11 (Official) in both 64 and 32 versions with the 800MHz setting in bios and the only system that booted up was the 32bit one.
It happens also in the windows side.....
Is it a memory controller problem???? (I know that in 64bit OSs the IMC is much more stressed than in a 32bit one)

But now there is another problem: I have 8Gb of ram, how can I use the rest of my ram??? should I enable the PAE??

i would measure the stock one and see if you can match it with a aftermarket one

Enzo makes some blocks. In fact when I saw the one heatsink that was over the CPU1 socket I thought it was Enzo. Might want to browse through their stuff at Petras or Sidewinders.

PS. ANy motherboards out there that don't require registered ram?

A lot of the boards including the K9ND series (and the equivalent Tyan board - they're pretty much the same boards; AMD reference design) will work with standard DDR2 if you turn off all ECC and Reg. options in BIOS. Apprently, though, Barcelona does not support non-registered memory.

P.S. I might be able to get some cheap FX-74s - Anyone think they'll work in the K9ND?

That's what Kayin said. He mentioned fx-74s working too.

The thing I don't understand about barcs not working with non-reg ram is that you can put a barc in a regular mb and use non-reg ram. So it's it the mbs fault?

You can't put a Barcelona in a "regular" Motherboard - Socket F is a dedicated platform for servers and QuadFX (2 Northbridges + Dual Athlon64 FX), basically the modern-day socket 940. Consumer-level Barcelona is Phenom on AM2, which does, of course support non-reg, but it's still a different platform. Anyway, with anything over 4GB you pretty much need ECC and reg.

OK, so I bought the FX-74s. I've never had anything even close to top-of-the-line hardware before, and it feels good. Hope it's not an addiction!

I know that this is a dual socket thread, but Newegg has a couple of quad socket motherboards. It would be fun to see what could be done with one of those!

Still gonna give it a go though.. hopefully it'll just pick them up as the equivalent opterons. I paid good money for these processors :(
I don't really see any reason it shouldn't work; K8 doesn't need anything as complex as AGESA code to be recognised, and in effect all an FX-74 is just an 8222 with an unlocked multiplier.

If anyone has any more info i'm missing, please let me know :up:

i been fiddling with my computer and i found a way to set trfc on all slot using wpcreidt first i open up systools or memset that allows you to change timings

you see that it changes cpu2 slots and now that we got that out of the way im gonna see what changes the mem dividers so that you guys with barcy's can boot normally then change the trfc and other timings then switch the div to 800 and see what happens :D

just set it to what ever trfc you want in the program just to get the changes it made then allpy them to cpu2 in device25 func 2. also i used this table to help me where to look for the timings

testing the div sometimes i get lockups so i used R/W everthing and found out those registers change every second on their own

I just installed the 32bit verson of Vista Ultimate and now I have both: 32 & 64 Bit.
The common bootable set for DDR is 667MHz, and both OSs runs just fine.
When setting the DDR to 533 the 64bit system don't boot, while the 32bit boots.
In both OSs the 800MHz DDR setting didn't work, but this setting works flawlessy with Mandriva One 2007 Live32Bit.....
So.... where is the main problem?????
I think that this WS/b is too experimental for standard use....
I'm thinking about getting a Supermicro H8DA3-2 with the MCP55Pro (L1N64 has the MCP55) chipset.... ASUS has made too many bad promises with our board.....

yankee are you able to run memtest with with the 800 div or better yet windows ver. of memtest thats on the UBCD??

as you can see this bios is garbage for memory clocking because the timings you need to loosen cant be done in the bios. i just tried 280x12 800 div @1120mhz in the bios with no boot up the same settings with the 667 div i can boot up normally. i tried contacting asus but they treat like a idiot with copy paste answers:shakes: but wont update with a better bios.. so since im getting no support with board my next build will be a single socket probably Foxconn A79-S or dfi with a 9950. dont get me its a good board to play with stable as a rock if you dont overboard but without support i wont spend no more money on it.:mad:

Are you using L1N64? That board has 2 nforce 680a chipsets, right? Could it be that the changes you make with memset are only being applied to one memory bank because of that, because it is only looking at one of the 680a chips? ie., maybe on MCP55/MCP55pro, you will only have to apply the settings once?

I tried my K8N-DL a week ago, btw. Nice board, but there are NO locks on it - which I think is the main reason for the maxhtt @ 275MHz:rolleyes:

I've heard that NF3 pro 250 has a pci lock, is that correct? If so, it should be alt better than K8N-DL for OC'ing? I know NF3 is a very good chipset, and I don't need pcie anyway:)

i think the programs were designed with one cpu in mind except RMMA which you can change timings on both mem controllers but their timings are so basic. i need the timings like aod in the bios or a ntune hack that allows more than 250 theirs gotta be a way for that because if you set higher in the bios ntune is also higher i might just email nvidia for help with that.or somebody can come up with a clockgen themselves, theres something in ntune that lets you clock with 2cpus installed

Yeah, hopefully if I can find the right registers my linux tool will be able to clock both CPUs by using the different offsets (like you did manually). In your experience, does the am2 table on rebels haven correspond also with socket f, or are some things different?

right now im not sure but just using it as a reference to see were to look for specific timings. now i just use r/w everything change settings using aod a watch what changed in real time then apply it to the second cpu

Yeah. It would be a lot easier if AOD, ntune and memset worked in WINE, then i could do the same as you. i guess i'll be digging through AMD tech-docs instead...

So, I got the FX-74s today.

I put one in the CPU0 slot, put 2 sticks of 512mb PC3200 ECC reg. memory in, fire it up.. here's what happened:

1. Enters VGA BIOS.. ok
2. Phoenix BIOS - "Unrecognized CPU", "1024mb memory" (at this point I think it's working and I am happy.. still no POST beeps though)
3. I press F2 to enter setup
4. :confused:Enters SCSI RAID controller BIOS, scans LUNs... fair enough
5. screen goes grey.. freezes (at this point I am sad)

So I figure it has to be the RAID controller causing the problems.. I remove all the add-in cards except for graphics, clear CMOS etc. Turn it on again and
get as far as the VGA BIOS (which slowly flickers on and off for a bit) and then the screen goes black.

I clear CMOS and try again. When I turn it on, I get nothing on the screen. The board does give a beep code this time though.. it goes BEEP (pause) BEEEEP BEEP BEEP and then keeps repeating BEEEEP BEEP BEEP.

I tried eveything.. swapping in the other CPU, putting in 2 CPUs instead of 1, different RAM, one stick of RAM, different graphics card, graphics card in different slots, no graphics card, putting the RAID controller back in.. same problem.

Anyway, I'm guessing the beep code I'm getting is classified as:

Which is fair enough - there's no microcode for FX-74 - but how come it actually got as further than the Phoenix BIOS screen first time round? How come it just shrugged that off with an "unrecognised CPU" message but now refuses to do anything?

EDIT:
I found a bent pin in the CPU1 socket. Fixed it without a problem. Then, when I was putting a processor in CPU0, I dropped it and bent some more pins :(. I managed to fix most of them but one of them is missing that tiny bit that curls over at the top to contact the CPU - I think it will still make contact, but not by much... I guess I need to find an opteron to test with...

EDIT EDIT: After looking at it some more, it seems it's not going to make contact after all. Contacting MSI to see if they can fix it / replace the socket...

forgive me for my late response...
I tried the memtest 2 times for every divisor.... (vista mem test)
It gave me no errors for all settings (533,667,800) .....
The second test is and in depth test... so ram modules has no problem to work with barcelona even at 800MHz....:up:
I think that AMD has serious problem with that barcelona IMC.....
However I can confirm that Vista 32 boots with 533 memory setting while Vista 64 didn't....
With Vista 32 I could reach 2.6GHz stable using clockGen (I've only 1 CPU).
I'll try using Systool....
NB: It's known that 64Bit OSs give more stress at the IMC, maybe we need to wait for Shangai/Deneb to reach some higher frequencies... For now I'm hold behind 32bit systems and 6Gb of wasted memory ram (only If I want to overclock).

Update:
There is a difference between Slot A1 and B1:
When I install only 1 Ram dimm in solt A1 the OS won't boot with 533 while putting it into the B1 slot the system boots flawlessy....
Likmark may try installing dimms in B1 A2 and B2 leaving the A1 free... and the system might boot with 533 setting too :up:

Hey! the first time I swapped my bios into the WS/B the system booted up with my old FX-74 once a time, then It never booted again (with FX-74).
I had to wait for Opterons to make it bootable.
Try these steps:
a) Fx74 don't support Registered memory modules, try putting standard unregistered ECC/nonECC memory.
b) If it won't boot again, find a compatible opteron and your original mobo's bios; after that go to the ASUS website an download the L1N64WS bios and extract the FXs microcode (I may send it to you if you'll need it), then place the FX microcode in your mobo bios. It will work with no problems with unregistered memories, even with PC2-6400(800MHz):up:
Transferring CPU microcode is not hard to do..... either is not so easy....

Lastest Update: FX microcode is also present in L1N64-SLI WS/B .... but the WS/B works only with reg dimms....

I didn't know they didn't support registered memory.. that kind of ruined my plan ;). I did try with some standard DDR2, the board just kept bleeping at me - it will only support non-ECC (and probably non-reg.) after it has been disabled in BIOS, and of course I can't get into BIOS if I can't POST...
I had assumed that since WS/B only work with registered modules, and that it "supported" FX chips, that FX chips should support registered memory? :confused:

Hopefully MSI will agree to repair my board and I can do what you said, use a cheap opteron to start with. How could I be stupid enough to break a pin! I still don't get why they don't still put pins on the CPUs - much easier for us end users. Must be a cost thing I suppose; gold ain't cheap...

I'm working on inserting the microcode, but it's going to be a little more difficult because L1N64 uses Award BIOS and K9ND uses phoenix...

Found a solution to raise up nTune Above 250MHz HTT!!!!!
Simply create a profile with 250MHz HTT and save it (like 250.nsu)
After that go to the profiles folder (user\AppData\local\Nvidia corp...\ntune\Proifiles) and copy the 250.nsu to an other name (like 260.nsu).
After that open the 260.nsu with notepad and edit it by changing the FSBMHZ value from 250 (or other value) to 255... 260.... 265.... :p:
I reached 2.6GHz stable with no problems..... at least for now.... :p:
Try it on..... it works!!! and it rocks!!!!!

Nice going! If your second chip is as strong then 2x 2.6GHz Barcys = :eek:

Which "local PC repair shop" can replace an LGA socket??!!! I'll try contacting the guy I bought it from; maybe he can get it repaired by MSI USA. If not, I guess I'm going to have to dig deep into my pockets for a new board.....

Maybe with an high precision solder you may reach the goal.
Usually Motherboard manufactures don't repair motherboards, they just check if there is any software (or bios) problem, then, if no soft problems are found they simply throw away the mobo and gives you a new one.....(warranty).
I think that's impossible to exchange the motherboard socket... there are too many connectors to switch....
this is all I suppose...

i had my optys with the ws/b with my regular mems working fine i think it only applies to barcy's and also theres a patch for vista for more mem compatablity im going to research that cause 4 sticks works in xp but vista right goes crazy so check that out..

@msimax - i nudged most of the pins back into place with a scalpel, tiny screwdriver and tweezers. This one pin, though - the whole top contact section is missing and I seriously doubt it will even touch the pad on the CPU when inserted, let alone make electrical contact. grrr... stupid LGA.. sorry just angry (more at myself than AMD..lol).

It's worth just trying it out with an opty, I suppose. Now where can I find a (really) cheap opteron to use temporarily? Even 2210s are going for £30 ($60) on eBay over here!

It's nvidia system tools ver 6.02 .
For now I reached 2.62GHz.
It's a noticeable 31% OC... not too bad.... i'm satisfied..
Now it's time to wait for shangai.... (and maybe a new mobo with better support.....) I'm sure I'll go for another dual socket mobo...
Otherwise, if L1N64 will have a good shangai support (i dubt) I'll keep this one:up:

I didn't mention some tips about nTune workaround...
I reached 250MHz HTT (only in vista32... Vista 64 fails to boot with 533DDR2), then i saved the profile as 250.nsu.
after that i made some copies of this file like 252,254,256,258,260,262,264,266
and in everyone of those file i edited the FSBMHZ value with increasing steps:
252.nsu has FSBMHZ=252 etc....
so, simply reach 250 mhz of your HTT than load every profile sequentially and you will have ntune working like normal....
Every profile will became a overclocking step... so when you'll be close to the limit you may decrease the file stepping by choosing 1Mhz jumps instead of two....
Isn't it funny??? beleve me, it's working, and I run stable at 2.66GHz without voltmod and DIMMs working at 710MHz....

My processor can't go over 2.66GHz which is a good result....
the strange thing is stability....
I can reach 2.66GHz and keep a really good stability (4Hrs Stess) while I go over 2.66 (ex 2.67-2.68) I got freezes....
Another strange tip: I can reach 2.5GHz with jumps of 100MHz (10MHz HTT jumps) and in five jumps I reach 2.5GHz... sometimes also 2.6GHz....
What will happen if we'll have a perfect working BIOS with mem timings, vCores FSB speed??? Maybe 3.2GHz???:shocked:

From lastest data about Shangai, It will support HT3.1 but it will be disabled till the new core version cames out as istanbul (6 native cores).
However there's a lot of chances that L1N64 will support shangai and even DDR2800 (shangai e Mobo support), due to the fact that shangai is designed for HT3.1 but will use only HT 1.1 and 2.0 on every mobo.

I doubt FASN8 will be revived - even the FX-76 CPUs were cancelled. Shangai will use HT 1.1 for now and I'd be very surprised if any of the mobos being discussed in this thread didn't have BIOS updates to support it - last I saw, nforce 3600 pro was still on the roadmap as primary chipset solution for dual-socket AMD for at least another year and a half, after which some kind of AMD chipset will take over (HT3 + Crossfire + DDR3 FB-DIMM :shocked: :).)

I didn't say there is a new mobo, just hoped there will be something based on cooler AMD chipsets and wanted to know if there is any sign of it.

The article says they plan to ship it mid 2009.
The board will use the new SB5690 chipset whom's biggest improvements might be IOMMU support (enables you to use physical hardware devices in virtual machines). Board will use Socket F and support Barcelona, Shanghai and Istanbul chips.
