I finally got some time to try to mount the Arctic Cooling Xtreme 2900 cooler on my Gigabyte HD 3850. It took some cutting in both the card and cooler, but now it sits there. And it works dang good!

With 1.5v I get 1GHz on the core, and a load temp not exceeding 48C.
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8793/9998752yo6.th.jpg
The cooler is very quiet at max speed, it simply works amazingly well!:D
I did put a res. for protection, miscalculated and got a max 1.5volts. I will bridge over that and se what 1.6volts can do. ;)
wow! thats amazing!
awesome ghetto mods:D:D

I love this thread:D
Wonderful. The Laptop gets the designprice for "most ungainly creation" :p:

Lol, clothespins, masking tape.... love this thread.
@ MaSell - I'm at a loss for words..... . That one pic looks like a setup for cookin' up some Tennessee moonshine.
Best thread on these forums. Nearly wet my pants from laughing so hard. Cardboard box and moonshine still ftw. The cardboard box is definitely the most ghetto.
And i thought my mods are ghetto. Dang, is that a power tape on HDD's? :D LMAO! Rep points for that!
Well, the only ghetto thing I have right now is my TRUE's fan being strapped on with some rubber bands.
I'm really considering a cardboard box case for an old PII though. :D
Wonderful thread, there are very creative people over here :worship:

fan @ normal gives 3-5°C higher load.
before stockcooler (made my own auto fan profile) 55°C idle fan @ 25% load 75°C fan @ 55%
thats awesome! :bows:
Man wish I had taken a picture of my ghetto setup. Was selling my case and had a 1 week period where my componets were housed by my table and some foam, printing paper and toothpicks...

PS, dig the mouse pad.
I had a bit of a problem with my Corsair HX520W psu. The 8-pin cable was a bit short for some management i was doing so i bought a 20/24pin separate power cable:

cut bits from the sides and made the 8-pin cable a bit longer:

Was a about to say - Things to worry about (in order of importance):
1) Graphics card at 45 degrees
2) Cable ties on DICE setup
3) Mad use of extension cables
1) It's the camera angle, the card's at about a 15 to 20 degree angle
2) It's LN2 ;) That's where I managed 3916MHz on my FX55
3) It was an overclocking event, six PCs running off of one plug :D
Congratz on that OC!

Thanks, but I posted here for the ghettoness
Heres my contribution.

Here is my Ninja duct mod made from an old recipe book holder so the vent and psu fans draw air through and out, also, with a port down on to my NB from my side fan. Worked like a charm
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/5...0009wp4.th.jpg
couldn't you have just got two more 120 fans to mount on the uncovered side of the ninja. Then it would be push pull. For the fan above the nb you can brake the bottom of it slightly so the airflow hits the nb cooler. I have the same mobo as you, i'll post a pic of my ghetto mod later tonight.
I was all for the ghetto a few years ago. Here's some pics of my modded 9500. Well, that was before i finished the vmods and added a TEC :D
This is the best thread ever. I love the cardboard box pc.
So heres my ghetto mod. Been meaning to post a pic of it here, and since i had to remove it today to install my scythe orochi, what better time than now.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/1...2481zx7.th.jpg
This thread is so much fun. My GTX needed some better cooling since we can Fold with them now, so I took the trusty jig saw and went to town on my old steel beast. The pic isn't great b/c my desk was in the way but it's just for amusement anyway.
http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/us...GPUTempRed.jpg
Notice the duct tape on the metal toward the bottom of the hole? Yea, that's where my jigsaw blade broke where the steel doubles over and I (still) don't have a replacement, so the duct tape remains. The other giant hole is from the aptly named "Cool Whip Mod". Am I going to repaint the side panel? Never! Ghetto-rific.
EDIT - To make up for how horribly ghetto it is, I have to redeem myself by saying the inside doesn't look nearly as bad as the outside!
This is a friend's pc who's vga fan died, so he came up with the most ubber ghetto mod i've ever seen! x 1000

Yer I love the cardboard box PC, thats gold, I also love the mid-air PC lol.
Got some mates from way out bush, I need to take photos of their stuff,
what they think is good and neat, and what they use for 24/7, is about as ghetto as it comes,
they just dont see it like that lol.
Like when he broke his AMD cpu core by holding down a waterblock with cylinder head studs lol.

My contribution to this thread...
Probably don't even need the duct as its only a 45W X2 4050e (2.1GHz), but I couldn't pass up an opertunity to make some ultra-ghetto mods!
Pics:
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...5/100_1063.jpg
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...5/100_1065.jpg
And yes, it is hockey tape (as a Canadian, I've got tons sitting around!)
Does the duct actually do anything?
And PkG, why the Playstation, why.
looks like there is a fan on the end sucking air away from the cpu sink
Ghost742 is right there is a fan at the end of that Duct
I think the concept is like a vacuum that sucks air out
I have seen old servers having ducts it has almost the same concept
Exactly. That way there is always some airflow, and changing the speed of the fan will have a larger effect on the CPU temps (so it wont have to speed up as much during load). Seems to work quite well as the PC is nearly inaudible at full load, with temps never breaking 40°C. I never tested it without the duct though.
and a stock pentium dual core heatsink on a 7950 GT  :D
screws with their base roughened with sandpaper superglued onto the ram & power circuitry for cooling..
the copper plated thingy on the back is a small square cut out of something i pulled off the back of a gigabyte motherboard (it was under the CPU socket) - insulated from the back of the gfx card with foam soaked in silicon based TIM material. the metal v was part of a s939 stock heatsink. and a bit of very taut builder's twine with a dab of superglue to stop it slipping around holds it together
Screws as mem sinks, that is genius.
well the mod was done for a friend, a non-overclocking friend ;(
so i think the mem's running @ stock
my only regret is not putting 2, 3 or 4 screws on each mem chip instead of just 1
i once spent 30 minutes on a motherboard gluing a screw to every capacitor and piece of exposed silicon - when i was finished the board looked like a hedgehog, it was beautiful
Lol This donkey.... new Fan holder.

hanging computer #2 :D
-a stock s939 heatsink on a 6800 GS (held on with cable ties :woot:), adapted with a cardboard/tissue-paper/super-glue shroud to a 120mm fan @ 5V
-a small form factor 230W PSU with a 80mm fan @ 5V added to the side to replace the original noisy 60mm one
-CPU is a socket 754 mobile CPU, overclocked and undervolted (it runs fine with no fan at all (the original AMD fan made noise even at 5V, i assume it was a ball-bearing fan) but there's a blue-ish 80mm fan is hanging there for good measure)
there's a 7 metre long extension cable coming off one of the USB headers to a small USB soundcard which sits beside the amp in the lounge, connected to it with a 4cm long cable, to keep the sound in digital form for as much of the journey to the speakers as possible (which i only just managed to fit into the view-area of my camera).
very serious question, i'm buying a used dual orb for 25bucks with ram sinks, if i remove the old thermal pads from the mem sinks, can i super glue them on to the mem chips of my 4850 and still get cooling and oc?
AS5 works to hold them on, even in a normal atx case where there upside down
if you clean the old mem-chips off with iso-alcohol i think it'd be fine. thermal epoxy would be better, technically, but for non-critical stuff (like gluing screws to mem-chips that didn't have sinks in the first place) i reckon super-glue is great.... and it seems to handle high-ish temperatures fairly well
you have to put them on and push them on good, but yes i reused my ramsinsk like 3-4 times with just AS5(and never took the original heat tape off...)
and one-two may fall off, but you can get them to stick
just super-glued some screws onto some mosfets
if you do something similar remember to scrape the bottom of the screws with a file or some rough sandpaper. the glue holds much better. if you use the glue on a shiny metal surface that has a layer of oil from your finger on it some of the screws will fall right off if what they're attached to gets jolted ;)
(and i'd guess the thermal interface can't be so great either)
for comic effect you need to tie a piece of long thin copper pipe onto them with string, and then thread one end of it through your northbridge heatsink
not really a mod per say...
