Erm...
I didn't know there was a difference. :brick:Quote:
vvikoo's 9600gt is not reference desgin,
exclusively has hdmi, displayport and 3phase PWM for GPU.

I did the mod today and mine also craps out as soon as I put the vr on. This is just anoying.
Stock it gets 1.1-1.11v and when i put the vr on the voltage is 1.15. I cant even be in windows for more than a few seconds.
This card is rapidly turning into the most f***ed up thing i've bought
I tried to ground the pin #35 today and it seemed to work, sort of. I ran some benchies but the card power line components quickly turned very hot and started to produce a pitched sound and this was only with 1.25V (3d) voltage and 775 clock. But maybe this is good news to people using extreme cooling?
I guess I'm stuck to 800/2000/1107 clocks with this card.
Nothing helps my card. Tried grounding pin35 (VID5) as Xargo suggested - same black screen.
Xargo may i ask you why exactly vid5? There are VID0-VID6 - why exactly VID5?
It was as largon suggested here:
But anyway, I suspect it's the power phases holding this card back. Looks like if you want to have a nice overclock, better not get the reference design. I'm thinking step-up to 9800gtx or some such. Should have plenty enough power headroom at least =)
I'm just a little bit disappointed with my 9600 considering I was able to run 8600gts @ 1.666V \,,/ with only air cooling. Not a reference design though. Now I'm going to sell it.
I tried a quick and dirty VGPU mod and it doesnt work. OVP or whatever seems to kick in at about 1.18V. Funny is that the card has 1.01V for bootup and 1.11V once it loads the driver. 1.13-1.15V is the voltage under load.
Good news!
I tried modding the voltage settings in bios today. I was able to boot the system @ 1.52V (1.58V 3d) and run these tests (one by one) in 3dmark06:
Fill Rate - Single-Texturing 6625,231 MTexels/s
Fill Rate - Multi-Texturing 21136,088 MTexels/s
Pixel Shader 414,076 FPS
Vertex Shader - Simple 225,755 MVertices/s
Vertex Shader - Complex 173,459 MVertices/s
Shader Particles (SM3.0) 128,667 FPS
Perlin Noise (SM3.0) 126,964 FPS
Clocks were 875/2150/945. Somehow the gpu overclock resulted in poor memory overclock and 999 mem crashed the tests instantly, vmem was 2.075V.
The stated voltage was achieved together with the 1.2V vid-mod so I have no idea what voltage the card would run if you just flashed my modified bios without any mods. In case someone wants to give it a try, I put it online here:
http://www.hut.fi/~hjkauhan/9600mod.rom
If you try it out, please report what voltage you get. Just be careful with the 1.58 vgpu, the core reached 103C in multi-texturing test with a VF-900cu cooler.
I doubt the bios will help me, but thx i will try it.
Can you run atitool artifact scanner too at those frequencies?
Did you measure the voltage with DMM?
edit: the bios file you supplied is with the default voltage setting.
Atitool has never worked for me even with default settings with any of the three geforces I have (6800u, 8600gts, 9600gt). I gave it a go anyway and it crashed instantly when I started the artifact scan.
Here's a photo of the voltage reading in idle:
http://users.tkk.fi/~hjkauhan/kuvat/...0gtjannite.jpg
That's strange. I haven't tried it without the 1.2V vid mod though. When looking at the vid-table, going from 1.2V to 1.5V would require going from 0011000 to 0000000. So one explanation could be that when you have default settings ( 0100000 ), the bios switches the vid4 and 3 to "0" but they are "0" already so nothing happens. Could this explain what's happening here?
If it works like that, I could try out 1.1125V ( 0011111 ) which would (hopefully) result in 1.4125V ( 0000111 ).
edit: Ok, I didn't think it all the way through... we only have knowledge of vid2-5 resistors so I can't set 0011111. So I tried setting 1.15V ( 0011100 ) and with my modded bios the multimeter now shows 1.48V. Time for some benchmarks.
We should focus on OCP or something else, they are the main problems we meet. But dont give up so easily.
2-phase design is not so weak, Just think about 8800GT reference card,it's 2-phase design too!
When I try to boot with more than 1.2xx Volt with just the VGPUmod, the card shuts down immediately after a few seconds.
Fr3ak,
Have you tried to disable OVP by grouding pin #35 on ADP3208A?
http://www.galaxytech.com/Product_De...ass1=1&class2= any one know a vmod for that?
Jups, I'm having the card right here, voltmods ready. I can't share them for now, I first have a friend picking up the card and test out how it overclocks. They will be online soon, don't worry.
So still no-go on just a modified bios, then?
I guess we are stuck here with OCP.
@Fatbird - have you found anything interesting out yet?
Nowhere on the internets is any information on how to mod the OCP on 9600gt. In fact many people have problems with factory overclocked cards on reference design which has been called the black screen - the same thing which happens when we slightly increase the voltage and try to up frequencies (and even when not increasing the voltage but upping the gpu/shader freq.).
Atitool artifact scan is a beautiful test to see the black screen in action immediately almost every time.
Got bored with my G92GTS which is overkill for my needs anyways, so I decided to downgrade and save some $$$ and ordered a Palit 9600GT. It's a non-reference btw.
I guess I'm gonna have to warm-up my soldering iron again. :p
Nice!
But sad that it is not reference, then you would prolly come up with some ocp mod. :)
Anyways gratz and keep us posted.
I have this card and know vmem mod - it is pretty easy, pencil vmem :)
Do you try voltmods ?
I think i found a place to pencil to increase vGPU, but when i make ~1.17v (and up, max i tried was 1.25) on GPU i have many artifacts in 3DMarks. 2D and Ati Tool Artifacts Scan are clear
Here we are ;]

vMEM def - 1.95v - max 2200Mhz - ATITool artifact scan free
vMEM - 2.06v - max 2300Mhz - ATITool artifact scan free ;)
If you're talking about the Galaxy ... I'm the one who was pciking up that card and seeing how it overclocked. Voltmods work perfectly, at stock clocks I'm able to go upto 1,67-1,7 volt before the screen goes blank.
Now running 850/2150/1120 stock cooling at 1,41v/2,1v
Can you show us a vGPU mod for Galaxy ? ;]
Soon, have some patience please, massman is still testing his card :)
Ln² comes next wednesday, so I hope to get the article ready in about a week ... :)
can't wait for my first shipment from Palit --->dual 9600gt cards to get in along with dual 7300gt cards so I will need to find some vmods for them seeing that there cards are almost all non-reference boards (9800 GX2 is reference... as they all are - for now )
Maybe someone can find vGPU mod for it. If you want i can make better photos etc ;)

I have gotten this black screen with my BFG's OC version, 675/900. Seems to be 710 on the core is about max, and anything over 1800 shader is shaky. Wish the bios trick would work. I'm gonna see how they handle 1080p, and if I'm not happy, they might go in with spare parts for an SLI system I'll ebay. I'm thinking g92 GTS will perform similar with bios vmod/high clocks.
I was referring to gaming, havent tried movies yet. Today, for the 1st time ever since I got my 42, I finally got to hook up my pc while the woman was away. I have to say, I couldnt be happier with SLI performance at 1080p with these cards. 1920x1080 with 2xAA and 12xAF running a Vegas coop server and was averaging around 80fps. You know how shaky that game normally looks, and it was actually pretty smooth.
@Massman
We waiting for vGPU mod to Galaxy ;)
The article should have been published this weekend, but we ran into some problems with the Tek9 (didn't fit), so we're awaiting the arrival of the new bracket to bench and finish the article, which SHOULD be by the end of next week.
They did take first spot in 3D Mark 2001, VGA on air :)
i have tried to do this mod on my Point of View 9600 GT card, this is the result :
GPU was able to run 820 Mhz using 1.2 V. and the memory can run at 1200 Mhz using 2.2 V :) :)

Have you any vgpu pencil mod?
for the GPU i just change the VDI configuration to 0 1 1 0 (vid 2, vid 3, vid 4, vid 5).
i do the pencil trick on Vmem mod
Palit 9600GT "vanilla" vGPU mod:
Attachment 75409 Attachment 75410
is this card does't use the referece board ?
Yup, it's not reference. And, AFAIK, Palit's Sonic has yet another PCB different to the vanilla board.
mmm i think GPU voltmod of this card is little bit easy than the card that using the reference board..
There is a mod just like this also for the reference card.
See post #96 in this very thread.
thanks largon - what is the voltage after the mod (of the Palti card)
It's a traditional variable resistor mod so it starts at ~stock and you can tune it up to a value "high enough".
any fix yet for the reference model ?
thsi will be my first soldering mod - any guides here at XS on the soldering on graphics cards -the proper soldering of VRs (like the way they should be turned first), and ect. --- I did a bunch of traces on 7900GTs with great results so I know how to use a mutimeter and such- also what is the best solder to use?... will be getting good equipment too
hey, i had to rma my sparkle 9600gt which was reference design...
the new card has different pcb so maybe someone can help with vmods for this card :)

Lithan,
Set it at max resistance.
vMEM mod wouldn't do any good as these cards have Qimonda crap GDDR3 and vDDQ = vDD. Increasing memory vDD would only make it worse.
please report the code of this marked IC's

Ther upper IC:
APW7088
The IC on bottom:
APW7067N
http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/9600gt/sparkle/back2.jpg
ok for now, i just can give you the soldering point of the memory vmod. for this card, vmod point is on the pin #4. for the value of the resistance, just measure the default resistance on this pin first.
Lithan,
Stability is unlikely >1GHz with Qimonda RAM.
jan,
For the vGPU mod:
What's the resistance from pin#13 to ground on APW7088?
Are the points marked in green connected to pin#13?
edit:
vGPU mod: 20kΩ VR from either green spot to ground.
Attachment 75563
based on APW7088 Datasheet, this IC's used 3-bit DAC to drive the error aplifier of the output voltages.
so if you just change the FB resistance, the OVP will work, same as my POV 9600GT's
akin,
The FB method would allow VGPU upto almost 1.4V before OVP hits.
20kΩ VR from either of the points I marked in green to ground in the pic ABOVE. Don't go above 1.35v and you should avoid over voltage protection from causing a crash.
For vGPUs higher than 1.35v a more complicated mod is needed. First step would be tracing where the marked pins (#11, #15, #21) lead. It might also be helpful to measure the resistance from each to ground.
Attachment 75566
i'll measure resistance later also where the pins lead
maybe stupid question, but where are vgpu and vmem measuring points?
for voltages measuring point is here :
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9051/backjo3lp8.jpg
big thanks for the help so far :)
i'll try the mod on the weekend
@akin
what resistance vr is needed for the vm mod?

I just wonder about this jumper with the label J2. What is it purpose anyway? It on Galaxy 9600GT OC....

Clearer version of the jumper thingy....
Where did you get those pictures from? What do those site tell you? :)
Noticed that too, forgot to ask Galaxy though :(.
Galaxy 9600GT voltmods can be found here: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=get...45&articID=802
most likely to select NTSC/PAL for video-out
Dural,
12pins / side -> #35 would be the one before the last on the "right side" of the chip.

Once I figured out why my card is not working at all any ore, I will try to ground pin35 and see what happens. Seems to be difficult though ;)
That's the downside of chips getting smaller, hehe
Busta_Dude: YOur mysterious jumper is a SPDIF-in ;)
Fr3ak,
Can you measure the voltage on that pin?
I am afraid, I cannot. There is no way I can measure that specific pin with the lousy equipment I have. I will try to solder a wire to it tomorrow, so I can measure it. I just moved and dont even have a lamp, so I have to wait until tomorrow in order to see where I solder.
Hmm...
Damn. It's starting to look like pin#35 is not the OVP-pin after all. Fr3ak, no need to measure it nor even try to solder on it.
I can provide high-res macro shots of areas you would like to see. I am pretty much at the end with my skills with this card. I never had a video card that was that strange in my entire life. =)
Thanks a bunch, but I think I have the close-ups I need.
:)
It's like the documents about this damned phase chip would've gotten censored off the whole internet...
:\
Indeed. I thought I was the only one not finding any tech sheets.

And sorry i have lost my faith for 9600GT refrence PCB.....
so wha tvoltages is everone running - and cooling type?
Pin35 is not OVP, I have tried
with:
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/5275/fehleryn4.jpg
(....electricity is not enough....)
so currently I am on very good A/C air with both cards (S1 rev.2s) and water on the CPU here is a score that isn't my best or best yet  these will do 845/2112/1000 no problem w/ both on 1.3v (I believe) and no RAM mod
Just read through this thread. Has ANYONE managed to get the reference PCB mod to go above 1.45v or so? Going to put these cards under some dry ice and was hoping they'd scale to 1GHz+. Is it an OVP/OCP issue or a cooling issue? Haven't seen any definite answers yet which is disheartening.
I cannot get past 1.21V bedore the OVP kicks in with my reference design based card.
I tried a lot of different things without success and I think I will submerge the card in LN2 and get a decent card.
Pardon,
Is there any pencil mod for this card?
Regards,
Abang_apy
I have a pair of leadtek winfast 9600 gt extreme video cards. They are water cooled with danger den maze-5 blocks and coper mem syncs. Would the pencil mod in the last post work for my card? What voltage would you guys recommend? Last question: in the last post, the 3dmarks score of 13490, that is one card right? I have two cards and only 4000mhz c2d and I get 15500 with stock video cards?
Prelim , only the black spot
so here is the dumb question...
how to trace it with the pencil, if you have the naked pcb between the contacts?
1.3815v mod listed above confirmed working on palit sonic 9600gt.
benching 3dmark05 now at 900mhz core linked shaders at 21xxmhz wasn't paying attention to exact number on shaders. previous highest benchable core speed was 833mhz. but that wasn't gaming stable, after an hour or so it would freeze up requiring a hard reset. if i tried setting 845mhz or higher it would either lockup or blackscreen reboot.
so i'm happy to have found this thread while i had my machine tore apart for a paint job and was able to compare the pics to my card.
that rig is setup where i cant stretch the Internet wire to it. so for now i'm not going to run 3d06 or be able to post screenies. but it is almost done with 3d05 900mhz core so stoked. i'll wait a minute to give you my score.
that rig has a abit p35-e running a e2180@3.5 2gigs of tracers at 1050mhz.
had to break out a cat5 cord to see my score lol 19295 on 3dmark05 i made the second page out of all the 9600gt's whee!!!:bananal::bananal:

Thanks in advance mates!
Spacemaster,
Your card is reference design just with blue color. So basically you're SOL as the reference card has some serious problems with mods and load stability.
You could try the VID mod, but prepare to reverse to mod as extreme instability is more than likely...
Time for me :)

Thank You in advance.
Edit: Gah, it's the same pcb as Vanilia on page 6, now only to find out where to smack it around a bit with a pencil.
