Hmm hadn't seen those rumors myself. Certainly hope they're true.

These drivers will introduce more and better antialiasing, but also multiple game fixes along with an overall performance improvement (although 7.9 was suppose to do that as well yet it was more or less the same as 7.8).
i hope so, I scored a 2 week old 512 2900xt for $287 shipped today
FLashed and it works. Can't seem to get 3dmark to open, even when I first installed the Pro.
Seems like a common issue with the Catalyst 7.9's.
Right click the shortcut, and in the Target box, add -nosysteminfo after the stuff thats already in there. It should start, but I don't think you can publish your result after you complete the bench.
Sweet :D
Looks like there's still a lot of bugs with ATI tool .27b Clocks would reset above 874 core. Cant increase mem clock too quickly at once. Volts doesn't seem to save.

Q: I just bought a new ATI Radeon HD series graphics adapter and 3DMark06 freezes during the splash-screen. What is wrong and how can I fix this?
A: This is a known issue and we have been able to reproduce it in our test lab. The problem lays in an DLL which we use to detect the graphics cards' core and memory speeds. We are working on an update to correct this issue after which all Futuremark benchmarks should run fine with the latest offerings from all IHV's. Until then you can work around this issue either by renaming the "Direcpll.dll" file (found in %WINDIR%\system32\Futuremark\MSC\) to something else, or you can run the benchmark using the -nosysteminfo command line. Please note that if you use the -nosysteminfo command line, you will not be able to publish the result online. Futuremark will inform all its users when the update is available!
On XT BIOS I noticed more very short look ups and shattering during 3D Mark session and it reacted with even more look ups after PCIe speed increase. On PRO BIOS though 3DMark is much smoother and card likes higher PCIe.

PS. My personal 3DMark06 RECORD!

Man after flashing to the XT bios, the overclock just doesn't seem all that impressive anymore when the default clocks are so much higher. :P
Hi guys, I have Sapphire HD 2900 pro 1GB. I want to replace Pro with XT BIOS, but in techpowerup bios collection is no BIOS from Sapphire HD 2900 XT 1GB. Can I use the BIOS from HIS or ATI HD 2900 XT 1GB and can I expect any problems with this?!
Thank You in advance!
Here is my result:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=3254276
Got my HIS HD2900Pro 512MB in and I've got it working just fine at 800/900 but my temps suck. Actually they suck even without overclocking. I'm IDLING at 60C.... I haven't taken the cooler off and changed the thermal paste yet, but I'm curious to see what temps others are getting with the stock cooler.
Is this considered good results?
Another
nice scores !
Thanks but really dont know what to compare to. :)
Now the question is.... flashing XT to Pro...wonder how that will go :)
do off brand cards work in crossfire?
I have a visiontek 512 xt, was thinking of getting a 2900pro and flashing it to XT for x-fire.
also i wonder if i could flash the visiontek to xt....
awesome now we need somone that already has a XT to buy a pro, flash and compare CF results.
SAPPHIRE 2900PRO, still testing.
Looks of the card are amazing, a red devil! :p:
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/3...ro3dm06rn1.jpg
Is that GPU clock @1.15V?
Very nice clocks! Looking at others card clocks we both are quite lucky to be @860MHz GPU :) .
And your score is far better than I can do on AMD for now, but you can compare to similarly priced 8800GTS 320 scores if you wish!
Congratz!
@ChaosMinionX Flash it to Pro and check for yourself if it's better! I'm on nVidia chipset BTW.
@Ownage Can your GPU go higher? have you tried up the voltage a bit?
I have a hard time benching higer. But my system was giving much problems when i start benching today. First i could do 740core or so, and much cpu speed problems. Now suddenly the problems are over, i can go back to 3.8ghz, and card did 833 core
847mhz corespeed couldn't run 3dmark06, the bench just crashed before the finish.
If i look at ATITOOL voltage control i see Vcpu 1.200??, do you have 1.150?
max bench so far:
http://img.techpowerup.org/071007/12...0pro_3dm06.jpg
Actually... forgot... I already have a custom BIOS on my card. So that wont yield any better performance.

Thanks, yea the core is at 1.15volts. I tried ATI Tool and its causing system stability for me (Starcraft would randomly crash to desktop). Not like the volts thing works anyway, for me at least. I figured no need to overstress the card. I just simply let ATI Overdrive max out the card and leave it at that. Until some other tool comes out that allows better stability, I'll just leave it as is.
From what i read :
what's with all the choppyness after flash to XT ?
Does everyone get these hickups after flashing ? is it only in 3dmark ?
Plus , the card gets slower overal compared to PRO bios .
Is there still an advantage in flashing an XT bios then ? (except for using in Xfire)
It was an issue for me, but keep in mind that it might be OS related (XP x64) or some compatibility problems with my MSI board. In the end SM3.0 scores was about right on both BIOSes, but SM2.0 was like twice much choppier on XT BIOS. For example I have 1s lookup just on beginning of Firefly Forest test, after that it's smooth like a butter!
I suppose that my XT BIOS is oldest you can get and there for sure is some more recent one which will be as good as PRO in SM2.0 test.
@Ownage My ATITool reads 1.15V and so do RivaTuner! I presume you're using 1x6pin + 1x8pin PCIe Power connectors and that can be it!
my pro should be coming in tomorrow! i too bought the HIS 512 mb 2900pro... i've got vista and xp running.. so i'll show results with both. sadly i'm stuck on an fx62 though... and a mobo that has no voltage option to overclock my fx62!
is it true on these cards pro and xt if you use 6+6 pin the vcore is 1.15 but if you use 6+8 its 1.2 ?
hate to ask this, but i havent found it anywhere.. but does anyone have the 2900pro bios? ... or know where i can get it.. or how to back it up.. in case i need to revert back or if i somehow fail to install my 2900xt bios
You can back up the BIOS with ATI Tool in Misc under Settings though I can't personally vouch for what it spits out. The XT BIOS at techpowerup IIRC, thought linked early in this thread?
Pleased with mine so far, though still have alot of testing to do. Not flashed as yet. Some early benchmarks at their default res at 800 GPU clock. Stock 925 mem. Am I right that overclocking vram on these cards not as important as it already has such massive mem bandwidth?
3DMark 06 11639

Just order mine Saphire hd2900 pro 512mb for 200~e [ www.plaisio.gr ]
does anyone run two of these cards crossfire i wonder how it goes :D couse is pretty cheap even for two cards.
How are the Powercolor 2900 Pro's clocking?
Also are all Pro 3 pipe coolers?
Pretty much get one in the UK for around £150 Inc
Very tempted to buy one but with the new cards only a month away ........
I'm sure they'll use up the remaining 2 pipe coolers on the Pro since it's clocked lower by default... from what I've seen, however, I don't think there's that big a cooling difference between the 2 and 3 pipe heatsinks.
Hmm, my Pro had 3.
NickS sorry to hear yours died man! Getting a replacement?
Could it be possible that the GDDR4 runs that much cooler that they only used 2 pipes? Seems like a stretch but thought I'd throw it out there. Wishful thinking on my part, maybe. :p:
@ Wrigley, thnx man. Replacement is on its way. My Dad felt bad for me cause it died so he bought me another one so I don't have to wait for the whole RMA process. The dead one is being sent in for a refund. :)
Funny thing. The same day I deemed it dead I was using my Biostar MATX motherboard and I was about to flash the BIOS. Got in the utility, pressed Y to begin. It gave me an error saying that I had flash write protect enabled, and to please reboot. So I rebooted and it never posted again :p:. Not even after a long CMOS clear, different RAM, etc. What a good day that was.
erg.. so far i just plain couldnt boot to my flash drive even though it was clearly in my options.... gonna retry when i get home in about 45 min
Im not sure about that but all you have to do is link the 2 "pins" not used while pluged in via a 2x3plug.
Shown here.

That is normal for some reason with 2900Cards. My real 2900XT does the same thing stock or overclocked. Its just for like the first second of the firefly test.
My question is I have a 2900XT and I was looking at getting a 2900pro and flash it to XT for crossfire. Someone else had the same question previously. But has anyone tested if this would work? And if it does how good? If im going to wait untell after Q2 before a new card worth upgrading comes out I was thinking about getting a second pro(XT) if the flash holds up good enough.
i´m about to buy two 2900pro cards to replace my old x1800xt´s.
so i was taking a look at the ati homepage to see if they are cf-certified. but on that certified products page, there are only 2900xt´s not a single pro card.
i´m going to buy the sapphire 512mb version.
does the 2900pro come with an internal connector (bridge) like the xt?
does it work in crossfire at all, even without a flash to xt?
From Bluesnews (hrm no mention of AA fixes):
ATI announces their October Catalyst reference driver release is due later this week, offering significant gaming performance gains, inspiring them to dub this the "Shoot Em Up" drivers. Here are some sample results they are reporting from the new drivers:

Can't wait for new driver....
Also I need to get myself to work and install Vista. I got CoJ with my card but want to play it at max eye candy DX10 mode.... Time to put my 4GB of RAM to some use :p: .
If you guys want, send me a few BIOS files via PM. You can attach them in a private message. Be sure to include clocks, brand & type (ex. HIS 2900 Pro @ 600/1600). If you know the NS of your ram, that too. I'll put them up on my site.
finally got to running 3dmark06 on my rig.. at stock 2.8 on the fx62... and about 820/1800 on the card.. got a little over 10,000 in 3dmark 06... not too bad for stock cpu... which ati tool do i need to overclock my ram over 1800.. cuz catalyst sucks...
and is it just me.. or does this not like 3dmark05?? i got 16,000...
your cpu is bottlenecking you in 05
so which versino of ati tool...and where can i get it
bump for a confirmed working bios that would work for the 1gb sapphire pro. The only two i can find are from HIS and ATI.
BIOS flash didnt work out for me.... i put in the line exactly, and tried several different combination.. and still a no go.. did the BIN ..then typed in the whole command line.... angered my last night.. i tried so many combinations.. i'll have to give it another go tonite
and is there any possible way to up my voltage though software or something... maybe i'll try flashing my bios for my mobo to see if i get some new oc options...
Latest ATI Tool: 0.27b2
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=725
But if you're just looking for an OC util besides CCC you want AMD GPU Tool
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/536/mirrors.php
anyone got a HIS pro bios? wanna flash it back to the pro :P
So, I'm thinking of picking up two of these cards to x-fire. Do you think my PSU can support them (corsair 620hx)?
Specs:
Corsair 620HX PSU
P5B Dlx
Xeon 3060@3.61
4 250gb seagate 7200.9 hds
MCP655 pump
6 YL fans
Another question is, If I add two 2900's into the loop (MCR320) with the CPU, can the MCR320 handle it all?
Thanks!
Probably. I think 750 would be better.
hey i found a site for the 2900xt 1gb bios... i'm not at home right now.. but when i get home i'll be sure to grab the site for you
and thanks for the link to ati tool as well, i'll be back to benching tonite :)
and its a bummer that my cpu is horribly bottlenecking my performance :(
and i meant for something to up the voltage of my cpu.. because i really hate not being to oc my cpu.... i'm sad i had to toss away my old e6600 8800gts system... :( ...
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/i...ace=&memSize=0
there we go, its got the bios the 1gb xt.. enjoy :)
be sure to bring back results!
I want to trade my GTS in now.... dammit....
Sweet. Looks like I picked up the last HIS one on newegg this morning. It was out of stock before I went to bed. Woke up and saw that they had one left. I tried to order two, but only got one. Probably a good thing, since it would have been pricey to get both right off the bat. I'll report back once I get it in.
So I install my brand new HIS 2900 Pro, it gets to the welcome screen, and the computer freezes. Try Safe mode, same thing. Reset BIOS to default, same thing. Take out the 2900 Pro and put back in my X1900 XT, and everything is fine. Put the 2900 Pro in, and it freezes at the exact same spot.
Booting from Windows XP CD, same thing, when it gets to the part where you hit enter to install, or hit r to enter recovery console, the computer freezes again. If I hit R fast enough, it goes to "Examining drive configuration" and freezes then.
Same thing in Windows, if I'm fast enough with CTRL+ALT+DEL it pops up Task Manager and freezes. It seems the card is fine for ~2-3 seconds once Windows XP loads, but craps out after. It's worth noting also that Sysinternals defrag utility runs fine.. the computer only freezes once it gets into Windows proper desktop.
Suggestions before I declare the card as bad and RMA it with NCIX (urgh... yeay for more waiting for shipping)?
I'm running an Opteron 165 with an A8N32-SLI Deluxe and an OCZ Powerstream 520 (I think it's the 520). The specs for it state it has 33A on the 12V rail, so it should be fine. I've also tried disconnecting both my DVD drives, so the only thing connected is the motherboard, a single HDD and the video card (with two 6-pin PCIE connectors ofcourse), but same thing happens. According to the OCZ Forums, my power supply should have more than enough juice to run it.
Anyone experience the same problem? Any suggestions?
You have another PSU to try out?
Yeah I'm running mine fine with a Powerstream 520. Sorry to hear about these difficulties. :(
I suppose you could try tweaking the rail adjustments on the PSU but I doubt that will help.
Anyone know if this block will work on the 2900?
http://www.petrastechshop.com/ekfucowafora.html
EDIT: NM I searched around and there are a few places that make a 2900 block. what are people using here?
Thanks
Update.. wiping CMOS allows it to boot. It seems the DDR Voltage being set to 2.7 rather then Auto in the BIOS is what is causing this problem. Will have to play around it a bit more to get my 50% OC on my Opteron 165 back, but atleast it is working.
Bizzare.
Actually, not DDR Voltage setting, PEG Link mode setting. Setting it from Auto to Normal causes the problem. I've set it to Disabled for now.
Looking it up, it seems to be a BIOS-level overclocking of ATI Video cards.. What kind of idiot thought that up?
haha nice... but i tink ur gonna be stuck in the same boat i am... horrible bottleneck from the cpu!! games still run beautifully though.. me having 1gb of ram really kills it though... i get a hick up now and then cuz of it...
and wrigley villian, have you tried out that bios yet? and i'm really curious how high you can overclock the ddr4 on that.. hopefully its not cursed like my x1950xtx was... that was just terrible.. couldnt get over 1100 or something around there...
ordered my two sapphire hd2900pro´s today. 239euro each
i think i´ll use these waterblocks when they´ve gone down in price a bit... a cooler for nearly half of the price of the graphics card is a little too much.
Why an expensive full-cover, it doesn't look that good, its just alu.
The fuzion looks much better for half the price, and probably performs better.
http://www.abload.de/img/wak31zz.jpg
I was under the impression that cooling the ram and VRM were required to get a good overclock. but if ram sinks/vrm sinks will do it, I rather save the money and buy a fuzion block for 50 bucks. 100-150 is ALOT to swallow considering the card was only 280.
I'm also afraid that if i went with a full block, the VRM temps would cook my loop. I have a MCR320 right now and the cpu is the only thing in the loop right now.
I haven't seen any crazy clocks with a water setup yet, has anybody gotten over 900 on your typical water. seems like you can close to 860 on the stock cooler as it is..
hard to say how much performance you'll get by going water, but noise would be eliminated. Which is nice.
I have a HR03 on my 1950xt right now, with a YL SL fan on it.
No cause I havent seen any information from any other 1GB owners so I'm reluctant. Anyone?
Tho I too am curious about the RAM potential. Saw mention that if you can get it above 1000 it probably starts to really shine against the GDDR3.
Haven't done much memory overclock testing as yet as these cards already have such massive mem bandwidth. Also, when i did move it to 950 in AGT got some 2D artifacts. So need to test further.
Well, first overclocking, 806/999, stable for 6 hours with 1.15 voltage. Set the voltage down to 1.10 (default) now to see if it will still be stable.
ATI Tool seems to like freaking out if I set the memory above 999. The card can't seem to even set itself to 850 without throwing up at this voltage, so it looks like I'll be running at 806. That or ATI Tool just can't set it properly.
Also.. this thing is definitely related to a hairdryer, daaaamn it's loud.
'ive done 886/1017 or something like that.. i'll bring an orb link later 3dmarkable that is
will a flashed 2900pro provide comparable (or better) performance than a 640mb 8800GTS?
