Which is directly due to the [H] back apples jumping over, flaming members and stirring trouble.
Same here. The people, the atmosphere, no wonder the manufacturers and retailers post here.Quote:

As a result, I have none of these things. I settled with an Apogee GT and a swifty radiator. I have, as they say, Tier 2 WC equipment. Second place. Almost the best, but not quite. WC has matured so much over the past year, it's almost hard to believe.
XS helped me to:
-Dump my Koolance NB block (me guilty...)
-Dump my DD 5.25" res for a t-line
-Dump HydrX in favor of zerex
-Take the IHS of my beloved 170 and soon to lap my e4300 (WHO KNEW WHAT LAPPING COULD DO)<hey this rhymes. copyrighted.
you should dump your zerex for PT Nuke and Pentosin :)
heh Pentosin Shmentosin, same ole' antifreeze. One of the top dogs recommended Zerex to me personally, and I'm not backing out
Nooc, if you're running copper/brass only then you can go for distilled water and pt_nuke, or just distilled if you feel safe that algae wont grow.
Wow, in just 24 hours this thread has stirred alot of passion. Great to see since I think that's one quality we all have in common... an immense passion for this trade. Many folks clash, disagree, or flame each other openly, but you can't question anyone's passion!
Anyway, one of the things I meant to add to my OP was that I think our laser focus on maximum performance can occasionally overlook (or crush) what might be other important requirements to newcommers looking to cool their rig. Everyone has constraints, requirements, needs, and objectives with their water cooling that don't always include chasing that last 1-2 degrees at any cost. I think the emerging veterans (who do most of the posting now) could be more helpful to newcommers by first questioning them on their requirements, budgets, constraints, and priorities before just spewing forth the standard list of equipment to buy. I would like to see a more consultative approach than a dictitorial one here.
One other thought I had today in pondering this thread and this fine trade we are so passionate about...
About 12-13 years ago I was heavily involved in car audio. It's remarkable to me how similar that "sport" was at that time to my latest hobby... water cooling. Back then there were passionate camps pitted against each other related to SPL (who was loudest) vs. bling (neon!) vs. audio quality vs. stealth/stock installs etc. I'm sure those camps are as passionate as ever now that they have the internet as a vehicle to share their enthusiasm. That whole industry really reached it's peak when the sound-off governing body started to incorporate elements from all camps into the rules for competing and the scoring system for winning. It forced everyone who was serious to look beyond their narrow focus to incorporate elements of the trade that they had previously shunned if they wanted respect. It was fantastic and really advanced the industry (IMHO)... How do you generate 120dB SPL in a stock/stealth install?!... Significantly more challenging than a van full of 15" subs! (my analogy to the UFO in this sport :p:).
I would like to see this industry evolve similarly and XS along with it. I would like to see systems judged not just on their cooling performance, but their suitability to the design constraints and requirements. I would like to see attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship encouraged and displayed in all builds... (Sorry Yugen! :p:) and I would really like to see this community embrace a broader range of solutions that meet a broader range of objectives than just that last 1-2 deg even though that may be the #1 objective for a lot of folks, it's not for everyone.
Finally, I would like to reiterate that I would like to see both the veterans and emerging veterans take a more consultative approach free of judgement and bias when helping others, especially if their objectives and requirements are not the same as your own.
The first response to a "I'm new to water cooling thread" should not be... "Buy a Fuzion, 120.3, and a DDC" (even though that's generally good advice). It should be... "What are your priorities, constraints, budget, etc.?". Then you can help them engineer the ideal solution for their needs and perhaps everyone can learn something new... ?
ahem..

I try to drop in as much as possible.
now back on topic.
How about a flame thread just for Ranker and Top Nurse? Just make sure you add a couple of HDD to the server....Ill donate! :yepp:
virtualrain your advice on asking what newbies budget/priorities is a good one,
but the other way around is also good,
maybe new posters here should in their first opening post already give the necessary details with regards to what type of system ther're planning to build/buy/prioritize...
* i dont think there be much flame grilling goin, it would be one sided, with most of the informed masses siding with Ranker on the issue of performance and efficiency especially here in XS...
i can relate to this post somewhat in terms of my addiction to all things hardware and OCing..................how often do i find myself pulling out the mobile phone and firing up the calculator to work out some OC figures :ROTF: man oh man..........this was particularly bad during AMD days and those funky RAM ratios :D
i visit 3xplaces that being OCAU, i4memory and XS........these 3xforums give me the daily fix i need much like morning coffee :D
XS is certainly my reference when it comes to extreme cooling including watercooling as the other sites just don't have the traffic and eagerness i see here :)
keep it up and cut down on over modding a little will ya :p:
Back OT.........hah does that EVER happen here..........:D
Cathar I read in your post that
"As a result, I've come up with plans for a greatly improved radiator design. Without XS being here, I wouldn't have likely thought as heavily about it as I did."
what have you come up with?
Any vendor needs a test subject...
My X3220 im willing to throw experimental stuff on to test it out.
:D
If its a super radiator, i'll be willing to take apart onslaught if that radiator is that great. :D
I have a QX6700 that we all know is a heater and then some I would be willing to be a test subject!.
Speaking of Cathar.............DOH have to send him pics.................grrrr
Won't disclose exact details for obvious reasons. Wrote software simulation of my ideas that show that there is the potential to achieve between a 10-16% performance gain over more conventional designs, and a far more graceful handling of high-speed fans for low-speed-fan optimized radiator designs, effectively increasing the range of fan powers that can best be used and still be dominant with. There are caveats though. More expensive to manufacture, and there are some installation considerations as it's not "fool-proof", meaning that the clumsy oaf could screw it up and see no improvements at all.
Simulated multiple known radiator designs against their results, comparing simulated results with actual results, and saw that the simulation was doing its thing properly, so I'm confident that the stated 10-16% improvement figure is correct.
I could be wrong, and this is where the sloppy engineer in me comes to the front. I'm convinced enough to the point of "suck it and see", and I feel that not to pursue it would be a mistake. Even if someone else could theoretically prove that it might not work, they might be wrong too, and we could end up overlooking something worthwhile. Sometimes you've just gotta take a chance.
