My DS3 came with the F1 bios. It booted right up with a E6400 and 2x1GB of OCZ Platinum PC6400 (4-5-4-15). I set the Vdimm to +.2v and flashed to the F4C bios and it was fine until I OC'd it too far and had to clear the CMOS. Since then everytime I try to power on the fans start to spin and the mobo promptly turns off. No beeps, no keyboard lights, nada. Removing the battery doesn't help. I tried some PNY PC4300 I had laying around (yeah, I know it has to run at PC5400) and the same thing happens.

Is this normal behavior if the ram doesn't have enough voltage? I expected to get some beeps if the ram was the problem. I'm trying to decide whether to buy some cheap PC5400 to boot with or just RMA this buggy piece of crap. :(

That's what I'm afraid of. RMAs are a PITA and I don't know which board to replace this DS3 with.

FWIW, someone here says that the F4E bios killed his DS3. Considering that my board worked fine until I flashed it to F4C, I'm inclined to avoid beta bioses from Gigabyte.

that F4E of his was actually the wrong bios, that was a renamed by gigabyte ds6 bios. The new F4E is not killing your ds3. Where do you downloaded your bios ?

I got F4C from a link posted here. It did work fine until I cleared the CMOS. I suspect that while my ram could boot with F1 at 1.8V, it might not with F4C. Perhaps F1 incorrectly read the spd as 5-5-5 and F4C correctly reads it as 4-5-4? I'm guessing here.

i got a question :

does anyone know a good fan control for ds3 + boxed cooler ?

my starts to run full speed at around 60-65°C which is REALLY high in my opinion.

i would like to have it run full speed allready at 50-55°C. any possibility to do so ?

the fan control in easy tune is greyed out for me....

ah yes : bios is on auto, so i could set it to "disabled" but then fan runs full then speed ALL the time, and that's not acceptable.

I have a CD-drive connected and my HD connected.

It just starts up for a few seconds then shuts down then starts up and stays on, nothing is showing up on my monitor and there are no post beeps.

Memory should be fine, that's what I'm running in mine.

Try the usual stuff...clear bios, take out battery for a min and put back in, reseat everything.

edit: also make sure you didn't forget the 4 pin PCI-E power cable to the MB

I have the same CPU, Mobo and Ram. If this is the first time using the mobo, it may only have the F1 bios, so I would try one stick of memory if you haven't. And when turning the PSU off and pulling the cable from the back, try pushing the case power button several times too before doing anything. So see if one stick works, if it still does nothing try a different slot that hasn't been used yet with one stick.

Looking for a decent fan controller too myself - CPU temps are ok, but not for overclocking. My freezer 7 pro only hits 1000RPM though, it should do triple.

is 49C system temp OK for OCing? Was hitting 61C without a fan on it.

I figured out what I had to do. I just took out the CMOS battery and shorted the jumper and left it out for 10 minutes. And I was previously only using 1 stick of ram but I put both in and it posted fine. I'm not posting on this system and it is :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing FAST.

Ok, well got the ds3 a while ago, my E6400 wednesday, and my gskill 2gbnr RAM came today. i was worried this ram wouldn't work becuase it didn't for a few others but it has booted up great everytime!

MY problem is the mouse. It is a usb laser mouse (the logitech g5). It worked great during windows installation but then I installed a few drivers from the gigabyte disc and re-booted and it wont work. It doesn't even light up anymore unless I use my usb -> ps2 adapter, then it will light up but not work. I tried enabling usb mouse in bios and that didnt work.

I think it is that INF updater (it says it controls usb plug and play when you install it). I thought I would need that but it is most likely causing the trouble. I have been trying to unistall it with just the keyboard but running the installer again doesn't do anything and it doesn't appear to be in add/remove programs. It could have been one of the other usb drivers I guess (like the ICH8 one) but I don't know. Can anyone offer any help? Thanks.

Man, this is annoying. These boards seem bi-polar. One will oc like crazy and the next will not go 1 mhz over stock. And some won't even boot. I really want to get one, but it seems like a huge gamble.

I wouldn't say it's a gamble, but you definately have to do your homework. BIOS updates have been helping a lot, and if you research well enough you can find out a lot of the fixes for issues people have been seeing.

Ok I got my system running and everything, right now i'm on the F1 BIOS and i'm just wondering a few things.

This was my first time putting thermal paste on a cpu/HSF and it was a big pain in the ass. I did it as directed on the Arctic tutorial. I put a rice-sized glob of it in the middle of the proc and spreaded it around with my finger wrapped in seran wrap in a circular motion until it almost covered the whole top of the CPU. Then I put on the HSF (stock) and I found it to be a HUGE pain in the ass to get on. I would get 2 of the plastic things popped in but then the other 2 wouldn't go in until I pushed them so hard it didn't sound good on my mobo.

Well anyways, I was wondering if idling at 40-43C is bad for stock cooling?

That's not true, I have two of these boards sitting in front of me now. They both have the F4C bios and with the exact same components one will not OC past 2ghz on an E6300 while the other one does 2.4ghz dual prime stable. Heatsink, memory, video card, hard drive, bios verion and settings, psu, cooling, etc is exactly the same.

I had my mouse also quit working on me after doing a reinstall, I have a Logitech MX518 & after I was installing some updates & the INF driver my mouse just quit. It would light up on Post but once it got into windows it would not light up again. What I did to get it working again was I went into device manager & noticed that all my UB root hubs had yellow exclamation marks by them. I just removed the hubs & rebooted & let windows redetect them & everything started to work again. I think it is possibly a bug with the inf drivers.

Thank you. I got it fixed by installing the Ich8 usb drivers a second time. Not sure why, but it worked.

Could be the HS is not totally in cause my E6300 is idling at around 30C.

I installed the F4E beta bios today. It completely cured the "can't overclock" problem, even with dual channel RAM and a 7600gt GFX card. Everyone having these problems should try it.

i did exaggerate on purpose. my point was to show that no o/c at all doesn’t mean the board is crappy, it means it doesn’t like components and will o/c some mhz with another set of mem and gpu...

ofc there are differences in o/c’ing as u said

OK my board comes in tomorrow so where can I get the F4E BIOS? I can't find a beta bios section at gigabyte.

Not sure about fsb, but at least many issues has been fixed (PIO, Geforce7, CAS, and some other fixes).

I thought it was fixed, but I am still having problems with both my pci ide controllers even using the newest bios. The problem was that when I had the controller plugged in it forced me to boot up to the xpress recovery 2. Now I am able to boot up to windows, but it doesn't recognize any of the devices like if nothing is plugged in. I did the usual and the drivers are in and theres no conflicts. None of the drives still show up in the disk management so I can import them. I would appreciate some help. Is my board bad? Should I just get something else?

Which SATA ports are you guys using for over 400+ FSB.

I can't pass dual prime with 400 x 6 = 2.4ghz or 400 x 7 = 2.8 ghz with an E6400. But it is dual prime stable with 350 x 8 = 2.8 ghz.

I have tried switching to a Matrox PCI card and using a PS/2 mouse but no luck. I think it might be the SATA?

Quick question.

I'm using the DS3 right now and I setup the onboard sound and it's working well. However the sound for various stuff like voices, ingame announcers, stuff like that are really low (including self-weapon sounds and footstep sounds in games like CS:S)

Is there a solution to this because it's really annoying! :(

I have hit a huge fsb-wall at 330FSB. Once I go any higher the PC wont stay stable. I have tried every voltage item individually, different RAM slots, different SATA slots, different timings, different pcie frequencys, without usb, and everything else I can think of basically. Any ideas? Different pci slots? I don't think so but this really is irritating me. F4e bios. Specs in sig. Help please! Thanks.

Thought I would share my results and maybe get some advice. My system is:

DS3
E6400
2x1GB OCZ DDR2-800 Plat XTC
7900GT
Big Typhoon
etc...

First, I had to grab a stick out of a dell to boot, then once flashed to F4E I haven't had any troubles running the OCZ at all, multiple CMOS clears, etc. I messed around with it for a good while and have concluded there is a solid wall at 399/400 FSB and it's the DS3 that is limiting me. No matter what multipler, MCH/FSB/PCI/Vcore/Vdimm voltage, auto memory SPD, manual SPD, PCI-E freq, and then many combinations of extra settings can get me past 400 in bios or in windows using easy tune. I can boot and am 32M stable at 395 with vcore at 1.4, but I can't even post at 400. I feel that the CPU has a lot left but I'm not sure how I can go about getting an exchange for the MB (what do I say as an excuse?). I think I just got a crappy MB. Anyways, any suggestions are useful, but I've tried pretty much every combination of settings with no luck.

So the new BIOS fixes the Cas3 problem?

Was it that the old BIOS always forced Cas 3 ? or was it just CPU-Z misreporting?

Obviously, I've tried the Ctrl+F1 trick to manually set it.
Cas 3-5 always shows up in CPU-Z as Cas 3.
Cas 6 makes the computer go in to a reboot loop, that requires a Clear CMOS!

If so I think thats what may be limiting my overclock, right now. (I've got some cheap DDR667 that doesn't go very high at Cas3)

BTW, was that in the first post? You have to hit Ctrl+F1 while at main BIOS menu, then when you go in to the MIT section you'll have all the "secret" advanced options! :)

THE BOARD DOES NOT MAKE YOUR RAM BOOT AT CAS 3 ALL THE TIME.
IT'S JUST AN ERROR WHEN BIOS IS GIVING SETTINGS TO WINDOWS PROGRAMS.

THERE IS NO MEM ON THE PLANET THAT WOULD BOOT CAS 3 @ 550 MHz AND BE PRIME STABLE

i've been testing a DS3 with a B2 6600 since yesterday...
tried all available bios (official and non official)
currently testing with F4E
unfortunately i only have two OCZ 2GB kits to play with...
which can't actually work at their default speeds :confused:

the first kit (2x1gb 667 gold)
wont boot at fsb=333 regardless of timmings
and the second (2x1gb 800 XTC Platinum)
is having difficulties reaching its stock speeds fsb~390

all test are done with a multi of 7 or lower so that the cpu freq is not the limiting factor in any way
timmings are set manually and auto
and voltage is always set manually as OCZ recomends in their website

Do you guys know if all the secondary memory timmings are set correctly when in auto mode?

i can't find any other explanation as to why the board can't run two sets of ram at even their stock speeds

any suggestions are welcome

THE BOARD DOES NOT MAKE YOUR RAM BOOT AT CAS 3 ALL THE TIME.
IT'S JUST AN ERROR WHEN BIOS IS GIVING SETTINGS TO WINDOWS PROGRAMS.

THERE IS NO MEM ON THE PLANET THAT WOULD BOOT CAS 3 @ 550 MHz AND BE PRIME STABLE
!!!

As in many cases not all users need to have the same problems. Please read my little test concerning this again, I do not have any other Idea than the CAS Problem actually being a problem, at least for some. Now with F4e I can run this thing at 375FSB without touching any Voltages besides memory, running at 1:1. Now thats an improvement over not being able to overclock more than to 300FSB with every other Bios before. One could almost think my stability issues were solved the same time this little displaying bug dissapeared. Now THAT'S a coincidence...

Do you guys know if all the secondary memory timmings are set correctly when in auto mode?

i can't find any other explanation as to why the board can't run two sets of ram at even their stock speeds

Do NOT assume that the board is capable of 390 FSB. Most likely the limiting factor is the motherboard and not the memory. I have the same 6400 platinum sticks, and I can pass memtest at 400 FSB but I will fail dual prime in windows at the same speeds. I'm almost certain that some of the FSB walls (even those under 400) people have been hitting are caused by the motherboard and not the other components.

I just exchanged my DS3 and I haven't tested the memory dividers on this particular board, but they seem to be buggy as well. Running at stock speeds and running the divider so the memory is at 800mhz will allow me to pass memtest but fail dual prime. I tried with 667 and 800 with no luck, and this memory is rated for 800. I have also tried a pair of Corsairs with the same result.

Hey, I read this on Newegg DS3 customer reviews:
Cons: I put the wrong front connector pin for the power button in the power connector spot on board. The one that says power on the board is actually the reset switch

Other Thoughts: I am guessing that some of these people who are rmaing all these boards are not checkng all connections and type of ram before doing do

I've come to the same conclusion about that same memory/MB combination, it's fine to atleast 800, probably even higher, but for the life of me I can't even get the MB to boot at 396+ but it is stable enough to boot and run anything for a while at 395 (haven't tried prime for a long period of time yet). I've tested this out with 6x, 7x, and 8x multipler and all hit the same wall, so it's not my CPU and I've ruled out the memory. I've e-mailed for a RMA exchange, they should give me one and then I'll ship it out. Hopefully mwave's RMA process is quick, I'm sick of waiting.

All 3 DS3s I've tried are Rev 1.0, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the only one out right now.

First one I tried was not dual prime stable over 300 FSB.
Second one seems ok at around 350, I haven't tried higher. It also did 450 for about 30 minutes before failing.
Third one will not even post at 450, but was dual prime stable at 350 FSB for 18 hours.

Hmm...makes my board look good, I can probably do 24/7 stable at 380 if I had to guess. I was really hoping for 3.2 Ghz (400x8), but knowing that there are better DS3s out there, and my CPU and memory aren't holding it back, makes me want to return it. With my luck, I'll probably get a worse one. If I start spending a bunch on shipping it back a bunch of times then it kinda ruins the point of getting a price/performance board like the DS3.

I got E6400 + DS4 at 3,00 GHz with F2 BIOS. Is there any know issues with DS4 temp sensors? In BIOS it shows my idle CPU temp is 28 C (my room temp is 22C) and System Temperature (this is the NB temp, right?) round 32 C.

I downloaded Core Temp Beta 0.9 and it shows diffrent

Then EasyTune shows even lower on CPU... this is not possible since its lower than my room temp.. but the system temp looks like the one in BIOS.

The highest one is the real temperature? I always thought BIOS had the most correct temperature.

Try using SpeedFan. Temp 2 is the CPU temperature and it has been pretty accurate in my experience.

I'll do the prime for the memory in a bit here then do prime overnight for the 380x8 and if all goes well I'll probably just keep everything and call it good.

Thanks. Guess it's just me then :confused:

I just failed at 380 FSB after 40 minutes, gonna try +0.1 MCH, if not then it looks like I'm stuck at 370 or maybe lower :mad:

So...I just put my settings back what I had for 380 and the board won't post, cleared cmos, now it beeps at me like the ram is the problem, so I changed it out with my el cheapo stick that I used to boot before and it still does the long beep at me. wtf?

I'll try the ram out in a different system tomarrow, but I think my MB just decided to :banana::banana::banana::banana: out on me. I can't get the thing to stop doing the long beep.

EDIT: Tried the ram out in another system, works fine. I guess it's RMA time :(

Hmm, not impossible - My DS3 turns on oddly, it powers on for less than a second, powers off and then turns on properly - Looks like time to mess around with the connectors then.

I can run Corsair UL up to 490 1:1 4-4-3 fine but it has serious problems running above 510-520 any timings and 2.5 memory divider

God, I think my motherboard might be limited at 330FSB. It can boot up at up to 350, but only stable at 330. I tried everything I could think of. I'll do some more testing today.

I have a quick question related to the DS3 and sata drives. I have 2 150gig Raptors (not in raid, just two individual drives) and a Plextor 755SA (sata drive). I have all three connected to the Intel sata ports and have disabled the Gigabyte sata controller. What mode should I have the ports set to? Should it be set to AHCI?
