I think that people's expectations may have been inflated with all the ES overclocking that's been going on and now this is a dose of reality. Overclocking really is luck of the draw. I have an X6800 (retail box) on the way and I bought it solely for the unlocked multiplier. It will come in handy when proving CPU ability, as well allowing extra headroom when running phase. I fully expect the E6700 to equal the air overclock i get (it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see them come out of the same speed bin). What I'm really bought when I purchased my X6800 is the use of the fully unlocked multiplier. To me, it's a luxury I plan to exploit under the Mach II.;)
I think Chainbolt on OCAU said he had 3 X6800 ES of which the best cpu did 4.1ghz on air and the worst 3.4ghz on air. I don't think a sample of a few retail cpus is enough to say that they don't overclock as well as the step 5 ES cpu's we've seenQuote:

I need to see B2 in Ln2 maybe is poor air clocker due high temps ;) (100% load fix)
Where do I sign up to get 3 X6800 ES chips?Quote:

PS: all on tower 120, no wc,phase
Nah, it's just because of the hype we were hoping for more. It's still impressive, just not by recent standards.Quote:

I'm sure by the end of the year, we will see Retail 5Ghz Core 2 Duo anyway..
retail hitting 5ghz I mean (not 5Ghz chip by intel :p:)
we already see some ES chip hitting that.
*Speculation*
I think Intel are very well aware of their refined processes now.
What i'm saying is they let loose some pretty great clockers as ES's to showcase the new wonder core (which it is) and are holding back those chips to become X6800 future processors.
The enthusiast market is one guys like us will pay a pretty penny to get the best we can, with Dell having bought Alienware, theres only more growth and more profit for Intel to benefit from.So thats the direction for those CPU's, and not the retail ones.*/speculation*
I hope im wrong,obviously....;)
E6700 also consume 75W at X6800 speeds, as long as vcore is the same.Quote:

Probably true. :D Let the speed-binning games.....BEGIN! :p:Quote:

Most of the people will buy no more than E6600s, and that's the main market of intel and most of most companies.

Good for them - I'm sitting pretty at 3.733 mhz, so I'm already "there"Quote:

3.7 is very cool i wish i could hit that, but i'd be happy with even 3.46Ghz, with just the multiplier set higher on the bad axe board.Quote:

my only problem with this kentsfield is that all ES chips will have 4 perfectly, evenly OC'able, evenly voltaged, cores while the retail version will not. How do you speed bin 4 cores? Just think for one 1 minute here. That's a lot of wasted wafers to get 4 perfect cores each and everytime. Therefore, the probability that retail versions will have at least 1 cpu that cannot OC well is high at best. It's all in the probability baby, deal with it.
i just got a e6600 6 B2 ...i havnt got the mobo yet, but what can i expect on air ?
running tower 112 (in the beginning) on a asus p5w dh without mods..and ocz pc6400 XTC..i know u cant tell me excatly, but any good guesses would be nice.
3.6ghz probably :)
then ill go for 3,7 :D ...3,5-3,7 would not be bad at all....actually my first intel cpu ever.....
it's really fast, you'll love it ;)
you think the OP has got it bad, the highest stable O/C I can get on my X6800 is 3.2 :( , all this last week I've tried everything to hit a stable 3.4, from lowering the the multiplier right down and ramping the fsb up and just o/c'ing via the multiplier and still no joy even upto 1.55v
X6800
Scythe Miné
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5400
BadAxe 3.4rev retail - Bios 1334
Tagan 480
Yes I know the mem is'nt the fastest but I tried lowring the speed and losening the timings of it when upping the fsb and also just o/c'ing using the multiplier which does'nt effect the ram,
I'm pretty new to o/c'ing so I don't really know what stepping the cpu is, in cpu-z it says its stepping 6 rev B2, on my cpu it says 2.93GHZ/4M/1066/05B
np mate, no offence taken, do you have any recomendations on which m/b to try.Quote:

Hi folks. I don't suppose you could tell me if there is any way of figuring out what stepping a X6800 is just from the sticker on the box is there? I am contemplating doing a trade with a friend for a sealed boxed E6700 for his X6800 and don't want to gamble on getting a more expensive, possibly worse overclocking chip. The chip is in his machine atm so I cannot read anything off the IHS.
Cheers,
Nick :).
Edit. Got a cold and brain dropped out of head. I will try to coax him into reading off CPU-Z........
