The problem with this product will be sustained low temps I think. The review doesn't say how long he primed before measuring temperatures. There are no "wonder" products : when the water gets warm there goes the performance ;) Fanless watercooling in general performs imo worse than a decent aircooler. And when you turn up the fan, it might be louder dan a Tuniq Tower. You might want to swap the fan for a papst or so, because I think you'll need it.
Of course, when it's only meant for benching (and not 24/7 use), there really is no point, it will be more than adequate. Other than that it's also a mighty impressive cooler :)

Ok those are results I can pay a bit more attention to. What people are not always taking into account is that it's actually the lower powered A64 chips that are going to behave the most like Conroe in terms of heat, due to the very low TDP of Conroe at base. OC'd it gets hot, but measuring coolers on 4ghz P4's or 3ghz A64's is more than Conroe will give off at 3.5-4. Thus it seems (to me anyway) that watching cooler performance on cooler chips oc'd, is going to be closer to what Conroe is going to be be doing.
Also this tells the story we are used to seeing, Tower and Ninja doing very well. I still expect the tower to do slightly better than the ultra 120 but I would expect it to be a degree better not much more.
We need more tests to cross reference of course.
PS: And also finally we see PWM temps which are almost always ignored but are important at extremes as we know. More tests should include the pwm temp, imo.
I think the SI-128 (blowing down) would cool the power circuits a lot better then say the Tuniq Tower or the Ultra 120. Though the Ultra 120 has it the fins bent down on 1/2 the heatsink so I guess you would get a bit of air that way. But I agree, more testing with final Core CPU would be helpful, but possibility too late to make a difference...
Fit's perfect. No overhang and clears all caps.
The 590 prototype boards may have issues fitting these larger coolers. Could be another plus for the P5WDH, IF that's the case. Have to see.
I'm still thinking the Ultra 120 will be fine - at least in the ballpark of the top coolers, and all of these top coolers should be able to blow the exit stream over the memory cooling that as well.

im just gonna create my own heatsink. Ill figure something out, i got a bunch of friends in the metalworking buisness, i can easily ask them for help. (i have a good idea of a cooling and small solution that will cool down my future conroe)
Yes, I remember someone telling me it does not direct airflow onto the voltage regulators and mosfetts... I use this fan on a 65nm D960 and idle temps are held at 44 deg celius, but also use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. I know it's not conroe, but the results speak for themselves - 3 heatpipes coiled to form 6 pipes from the block! Why would anyone not consider using this all copper heat sink as a great heat dispersing solution? This thing spits the heat out the rear case exhaust whereas vertical airflow circulates the CPU's hot air messily aroung the place. I think well done Zalman!Quote:

Have anyone tried Tower 120 on Asus P5B mobo? Does it fit?
If you can find one .. i would suspect it should fit just fine. TT120 has a very small foot print and the mount is pretty high above any caps. see below:

New results for the Thermalright Ultra 120 vs XP 120 (SI-120)... you can see if cools just a tiny bit better .. but the XP (& SI) cool the power circuits better. I think a key point made in the review though (to account for the large PWMIC temp difference) .. is
"At the same time, the Ultra-120 would be an amazing setup for a case setup with front to back airflow if the Ultra-120 was orientated to blow its hot air off the cooler straight out the back."
I would think that all C2D motherboard would have the Ultra-120 mounted facing the back .. so it would cool the PWMICs alot better.

That chart with the Noctua looks off for the same pts mentioned. The Tuniq doesn't do so poorly as that indicates. There is no SI 120 on it, nor the Ninja and probably for obvious reasons. They missed the Zalman 9500 and for some reason all the German coolers seem to be doing exceedingly well. Anyway, take it with a grain of salt or maybe a couple grains.
PWMIC is manageable really. If you are using the P5WDH, just put the fan on that usually goes on for water cooling. Its a great thing to note, but orientation plays a big part in it if the cooler is a vertical one. So while I believe there is a higher temp with the Ultra 120 just due to how it is working, I think if you face the fan to the back or pull from the back the resulting airflow will be turbulent enough to cool the pwmic as well as the memory chips. And if you go vertical placement, stick a small fan blowing some air around the pwmic area. It's not like XS air coolers are fan allergic :)

I've used both Big Typhoon and Tuniq 120, and can attest the difference betwen the twos are indeed quite small. For pure CPU cooling Tuniq 120 would be superior but then again you will need a 2000+ RPM fan to see its real potential. Unfortunately with Tuniq 120, you can't install a 38mm fan due to the design. Only 25 mm fans and with one running over 2000 + RPM it gets quite loud. With Big Typhoon, you can easily switch the fan to a 38 mm one with more CFM and less RPM.
Also remember all the benching people w/ Tuniq 120 run their rigs outside the case, with motherboard sitting flat. And we usually see an additional fan or two blowing around the memory/CPU socket area.
Why? It's the nature of all these L-type HSFs. It moves almost no air around the motherboard. For today's hot-running chipsets, some sort of air-flow is a must. If you're talking about actual system running in a case, I'd definitely recommend additional fan to move air around the CPU socket/VRM area, which could be not very practical.
So all-in-all, I'd rate Big Typhoon and Tuniq 120 the same score. If you run a test rig for pure OC'ing fun, go with the Tuniq 120 and get one of Thermaltake's 3000 RPM 120 mm fans. You will see a record low on the air-cooling. Just don't forget to add a fan or two blowing air on the motherboard.
If you're actually building a system with a case, Big Typhoon could be a better choice since you can change the fan type easily and it'll move air on the motherboard without extra fans. In this case the CPU might run 1~3C higher than w/ Tuniq 120, but your motherboard temps will be quite lower.
I'm interested in this Vapochill Micro... A lot less weight than most decent sinks, yet these tests show it pulling pretty good temp numbers. Yet I've seen people here slam it. Is it actually good, or are all the good numbers with it using a really loud fan?
Vapochill Micro was the first heatpipe cooler. I remember wanting one few years ago. But I don't think it's the best buy 2 year later..
I use the Thermalright XP90c and a Panaflo fan on my current rig which has an 840D EE processor in it. The XP90c is tied for the top spot on overclockers.com "Air cooler ratings". My CPU idle is 33c and 100% load is 46c. This is with an external temp probe and an ambient temp of 72F.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the XP90c? Does it fit on the Asus P5W DH or Bad Axe?

Vapochill Micro is up there with the other sinks you guys are recommending in all the tests I've seen, including the ones shown here... Sure, it may be a few degrees away from the top of each test, but it's damn close, and I wouldn't have to worry about putting a heatsink that weighs damn near a kilo in there.
I have found a Tuniq Tower 120. It's £65 in all including postage and packing to the UK. But is it worth £65? I dunno the prices out there as it's out of stock all ofer the place.
Is the Big Typhoon that close to it? The Sythe Ninj is out of my options now as the difficulties some are having with it!
The XP90c? - Is that any good as someone states.
Also, these panaflo's. Are they really the best fans? Cos I got recommended by Anemone to get them for my P180.
Big Typhoon is also kind a pain to mount, i've installed 3 of them and had to come back to the first 2 to retighten the screws. I'm not sure how much the TT120 is worth.. i guess it depends how far you want to OC. :)

I think earlier in the thread the top heatsinks were already named. The difference amongst the very top is a couple of degrees at most. In fact since Conroe runs so cool many of the top heatsinks are likely to hit the same temperatures. Take one of the top 5 and you are gtg.
Becauset the Tower 120 is unavailable, I just bought a Big Typhoon and will be replacing the stock fan with a 38mm 105CFM Sanyo Denki. I always have my motherboard in the case so the Big Typhoon just made more sense than the Tower 120 for mounting and space purposes.
I need to know one thing.... Is the Tuniq Tower 120 worth £65 ($120)?

Yeah my thinking on the TR Ultra 120 is to mount two medium to quiet fans on it, push pull. I don't think I'll have much envy out there for even dual fan Ninja's at that point :)

I replaced the stock Big Typhoon bolts/nuts with 6-32 sized bolts/wing-nuts. Works like a charm, much easier.
My experience was that the Big Typhoon was 4-5 cooler than the Ninja with the same fan/ambient temps.

I used the Scythe Mine for my Opteron165 (horrible clocker), got it from NCIX. It was the recommended alternative to the Tuniq 120, which was my first choice.
At full load, with a 2.5Ghz clock, the Scythe Mine reduced my temp from 51C (Stock AMD HP cooler) to 40C. Not too shabby.
Well like I said, my XP90c keeps my 840D EE @ 33c Idle 46c Load @ 72F ambient.
My Asus P5W DH arrives today and I will report back tonight the cooling prowess of the XP90c on that board with my 840D EE. I am going to wait a bit before ordering either a Conroe or a Kentsfield.
Did anyone try the 9500 LED on a P5W DH? I just bought one and I want to install it today. Does replacing the stock cooler with a third-party one void the CPU's warranty? Not that I care much about my Celly's warranty but I'll sure care when I get my C2D.
Replacing the stock cooler does not viod the warrenty of the chip, don't worry. A CNPS9500 should be a pretty good heatsink for your C2D :)
The one that interests me the most is the Scythe Mine III if I am able to mount it in such a way that its sandwiched fan can blow in the direction of my case exhaust fan.
I am using Antec P160 case and Giga Ds3 mobo.
One reason I'm asking is because someone in the new egg reviews was saying the had to mount it in such a way that it blew top to bottom in their case (which to me seems less than ideal blowing hot air downward instead of in the direction of the exhaust)
Also did I read it right that you can replace 100mm fan with 120mm?
I'm also considering thermaltake BT.

If you don't mind noise... Tuniq Tower 120; if you want utter silence, Scythe Ninja.
All really depends on the fan ... but the TT120 really needs more air to get the same cooling becuase the fins are so close together.Quote:
