Solving the AN7 issue

Just recieved mine from the newest batch out of Abit.

I have a week 19 Barton 2500+ on it....unlocked CPU for sure as I could change multi's on my old beater NF7-S rev 1.

Bios version 13.

I cannot change multipliers to anything, nothing, nada.

11 is it.

No matter what the Vcore is set at in the bios, it shows 2.05 in the bios monitor and in uguru on the desktop. Not sure if to believe it or not as my temps are 32c...which clearly should be substantially higher if the voltage was 2.05v.

I'm not happy that my unlocked Barton cannot have it's multi changed with this board.

My voltages are more than excellent all the way around and stable...this is a a major plus.

Anyone else have the multi problem on a known unlocked cpu?? or the Vcore showing over 2 all the time no matter the bios setting??

As I said before this crap board won't do 1/2 multies on my unlocked and working prefectly in other N2 board Barton 2500.

I can do whole numbers, but no .5's.

So I'm stuck at 208 cause I want my CPU maxed out and I can't choose much else. It won't do over 221 at all.

Try a reflash? These boards hate the ridiculous windows-flash util.

I grabbed the .exe, reflashed with all the usual flags, and its a bit more behaved than usual.

And yeah, this board hates multis under 11. Although I can use 10 somewhat.

So far, I have not had any of these issues with my almost year old 2500+. I cannot get any .5 multi's to work, but I can get to 225 x 10 and 218 x 11 for 2398 (shows 2402 in MBM5) I have had it at the 218x11 for weeks now. I am running the original Bios. My Vcore always shows the 1.9v I have it set for both in Bios and in guru. It has always showed the right voltages.

My board initially detected my 2700 as a 2700+ .. Then it detected as a 3200+ ( 200x11 ) .. Then .. It could not detect - it would say user define - BUT @ 166x13 .. Now it detects it as 166x14 and I can NOT change the freaking mutliplier .. Before then it was 166x10 and I could change mults .. This board is screwed .. Major pain .. :cussing: @ Abit

The 1.2 bios doesn't keep the ram timings changed. No matter what you se them to it will default to SPd settings. Check it you'll see.

I'm not talking .5 multi's, or multi's below 10 etc. I'm talking about having NO control over any multiplier choice. Whatever I set it for..it remains 11....just like a locked CPU.

The CPU is NOT locked.

When clearing the cmos or a fresh startup, the default volage as set by SoftMenu is 1.885v for my Barton. THAT is definitely NOT right either.

No matter what I set the Vcore to in SoftMenu...it shows as 2.05v in all monitoring.

Hallowed..I will do a fresh flash after work today in dos and see if this indeed straightens out. The board has no cut traces or added resisters either, so it appears to be the "refined" version 1.

I will work diligently to get this board working up to it's potential in the coming weeks:)

I always liked you and hope things work out.
Remember this. The AN7 is really the NF7 with some extras. That's it. There is NO reason for the multipliers not to work.

Now, is it possible Nvidia and AMD are in this together to get people to lay off the cheap CPU's and N2's in favor of the N3?

Yes it's very possible. AMD starts by locking their CPU's. But, they hear people are still oc'ing great with them using a high fsb.
So they see their plan is not working completely. So they go straight to the source of the chipsets, Nvidia.

Nvidia cripples the chipset on purpose by hindering it's top FSB to
say 220 and takes out the multiplier ability.

This is all a well thought out plan by AMD to force us into buying the new AMD64 and FX cpu's and the boards to go with them.

my AN7 allowed me to change voltages and multis and all, just died when i tried 230fsb. i never saw teh vcore weirdness in windows either. though my temps WERE out of whack in windows. methinks my next mobo will be a dfi infinity. less issues. sorry abit, you blew it.

Only problem i'm having with my AN7 is getting it stable at 200MHz+ FSB :(

Yes I'm thing of getting the DFI rev B BUT, the vcore is only 2v :(

I'm not apying $156 for a board I have to mod. How foolish of them. They give you 3.30v on the Vdimm, and 1.9v Vdd but only makes 2v on the cpu. makes sense to you?

I think Abit foobed something along the design of the PCB. There really isn't a good reason for it to clock worse. If you look at the traces it is substantially different than the NF7-S in key areas. I'm guessing Abit §§§§ed up on a few.

Why the hell would Abit purposely release a product solely to piss off enthusiasts and kill sales? They wouldn't, all there is to it. ;)

They don't clock high anymore. How come?

My last NF7 sucked bad. Also peaked out around 222. Exact same hardware as on a old Nf7 that did 234+

Same CPu same everything.

LD, rma AN7 and get the dfi? Interesting. You need to start going out on the limb "a bit". (no pun intended) By the way, 2v on the cpu isn't so bad.

222 sounds like a BIOS problem.

Its so fkn weird. On a normal board stability gradually fades away. My NF7-S is like this. 223 a bit shaky, 225 needs some help, get the ambient cold and start playing with 228-230-232.

AN7 is like ho-hum... 220... 221? Go f yourself. Oh all right. 222? Im outta here. I mean if I use 1 & 3 the board is as stable as an earthquake, but manages to hit 221. Using 2 & 3 wakes the board up, but STILL limited to 221. WTH?

I've never seen boards hit walls like that except for flakey BIOS's... remember in the golden days with our XP333's it took a BIOS to get us past 190? :D

Perhaps we should try bridging the 200 connects on our 2500+'s and see if that fixes anything. I gotta redo my 333 contacts anyway.

I don't there is any conspiracy with Abit and Nvidia. Coincidentally, they both just seemed to have had some major screwups lately i.e. nvidia w/ gforce fx and driver issues, abit with all its latest motherboards. It would be stupid to intentionally piss off their customers but whatever the reason, it doesn't matter. That's why I'm looking to ati and other reputable mobo manufactures for my hardware in the future until they get their act together.

tech, teh dfi infinity is teh same as the lanparty version, same voltages and stuff, just no fancy gigalan and uv stuff. and differant color pcb *gasp*

just go for the $94 infinity

What about water block mounting holes? I know one of their boards don't have them.

But how can you get along with 2v vcore?

The lanparty rev B has holes the rev A does not. The infinity is similar to the lanparty revB and has holes. I think people calling the infinty revB are a bit confused because I think there only is one; making that mistake because an infinity is a slightly stripped lanparty revB.

2.0vcore should be decent for 24/7 use. Depends what you want to do with the board. I just want my Hyper X 3500 to stretch it's legs a little bit. Maybe it was my NF7S but OC's in the 2.06-2.1v range just couldnt really get a 100% stable as a rock system with that on my board. I woudl certainly liek a vmod though. Some thoughts in that DFI lanparty thread about fluctutations. Most interested in that. I will mod the board but if it fluctuates under normal bios settings....

Anyways the infinity seems to be the best non NF7 choice right now. Of course a new rev AN7 might just own as well as the fact that mobo makers will probably be releasing more NF2 with release of MCPS if it comes out. Via has said they have a few pci locked board plans... don't know if socket A included.

Basically, If I had to pick a board to try I'd try a Infinity. the NF7 might still be the best choice for some. But Abit p1ssed me off.
Not only that but I dont have a super barton. I get like 2.3GHz and 2.4GHz up in the 2.0v region. So even if the NF7 is an fsb monster, without 10 and 10.5 I might find any extra fsb headroom north of 225 would have to be squandered to maximze my cpu. I guess everyone needs to set their goals. If the board doesn't fluctuate too much I'd like to settle on 225-230*10.5 and I should hit that with 1.95v to 2.0v.

My AN7 hates my BH5's as well so, I'm really staring at the order button for the infinity.

Yes I found the AN7 likes Ch5's much better.

The thing is both my CPU's need 2.1 to do 2500Mhz+

I don't want to run at 2400 or even less. That means a volt mod.
This is what I'm going to do.

Try my 2400+ tonight and see if I have 1/2 multies. If I do, then *maybe* a bios fix might fix the Barton problems.

If it doesn't work I'll wait like another week. If I see better reports on the newer AN7's I'll rma. If not, then I guess it's vcore modded Infinity.

both have mounting holes, the lanparty rev A had none that was the big flop mobo, both new ones have holes. they are teh same mobo just differant colors and one has more useless goodies, like gigalan and uv and whatnot. also a few moer sata headers but who gives a flying... *ahem*.. ya. same mobo, one with glits and flashystuff other without.

maybe my fsb woes were form BH5. though my friend with corsair bh5 is fine at 225 and so was i. anyone gettign higher using ch5 instead?

BH5 doesnt work for me in it.

Anyways, it's official now. I'm returning my AN7 and going back to my NF7-S v1.2. Shame, I undid my L12 mod on my 2500+. I had used defogger repair kit. Think I'll throw my 1700+ in to avoid redoing L12 mod. So I guess that also means I need a new board for my barton. Infinity here I come.
