A Tripod will help so I don't shake the Camera..
Thanks. I'll give it a try. I got Photomatix for now. I'll see how it goes.
thanks!
(and common the D40 isn't that bad, not for beginners at least)

thanks Soulburner
fast is not an option for me, but I should have checked the manual. the DP1 has auto bracket of up to 3 steps and I was ignoring its existence.. :slapass:
I did a couple test shots yesterday but the results were pathetic. I will have to try again this weekend but I definitely need a better theme lol
lucky..
im looking into soft hacks as a solution. my company works with a pretty smart group of programmers. i might invest some money if they could hack the firmware and add a few functions.
people have been talking about it for a while, but it seems there are no developers interested in the D40/X and the D60.. which sucks because its actually a pretty big group of people. Some people are trying a petition to see if they can get nikon just to add it to the firmware either free or for a fair price. i would buy it!
HDR imaging is alittle more important for me as i use it in my graphics all the time for clients. most of the time we subcontract others with the right equipment meaning i lose a chunk of $.
I understand wanting auto bracketing...but then why did you buy a D40/D60? If you want that feature that's what the D80/D90 and above are for.
Heck I even migrated from the D80 to the D300 because I could bracket more exposures. I can now do 3, 5, 7, or 9 whereas I could only do 3 before.
I just wanted to thank Vapor for this (ancient) idea. I was looking for a simple test and it doesn't get any easier then this :p:
my first results are far from great, but its a start:

hdr:

(edit: just to clear it up, I did a total of 9 exposures, but spared you guys from the other 8)
thats why i wanted your 80!!! i know i should have gone with a 80/90 but at the time it was too costly and the 90 was not out. 90 bodies for like $900 now so its not that bad. people make bad chooses
edit:
first HDR, and clouds came out weird. they were moving faster then i could take them so its gots some weird stuff going on
hoax: Nice example of HDR, you captured at least 9 stops of DR (very impressive)
evil-98: Not too bad for your first - it looks too dark under the roofs imo, I'm guessing you're using Photomatix - you might want to try bumping up light smoothing and the luminosity.
Old shot back in early November:

Would anyone be interested in a HDR tutorial that doesn't require Photomatix and gives (in my opinion) more realistic results?
Thanks Metric! that november shot looks really nice, great natural colors
I am sure interested in reading that tutorial. Specially interested in reading about the kind of workflow that others use with HDR. :yepp:
I'll read your tutorial.. I've yet to try a HDR.. but I'm going to give it a try today if I can.
Taken today, cloudy boring day, the sky was all grey, so not really a lot of detail to gain there, but a HDR picture none the less:

First I created the HDR image in photomatrix, but then it left horrible CA/miss alignments. So I loaded the picture into Lightroom, corrected that, and it turned out OK. Though some parts are a little... "shaken" because I couldn't be bothered with bringing a tripod for school.
my sucky Fuji S5800 + alot Photoshop (HDR plugin) :D

Here's my first HDR.

I'm revisiting Photomatix after having trouble with Photoshop and finding pictures it does better. It still doesn't align like CS3/CS4 (will always be the king of perfection) but it brings out shadow detail a lot better.
Photoshop:
King of alignment (but takes more processing time)
Supresses noise (cleaner images)
Great light smoothing
Photomatix:
Better shadow and overall detail (via Detail Enhancer)
Enhances noise (grainer images)
Good light smoothing (but not quite as good as Photoshop)
So there you have it...I'm using PM a lot more now, but that doesn't make it the standard. I'm not liking the noise especially. It came with a new plug-in that allows one-click integration with Lightroom which is a big plus.

Another HDR. Criticism please.
