Water cooling the Asus Maximus SE X38

Few questions...

Is there anything else I’m going to need for mounting these blocks? I see you talking about a NB backplate and I'm assuming that it’s already on the back of my board with the stock cooling rig, Right?

As I understand it, the MOSFT blocks are the most restrictive of the set. So I’m going to run my MOSFET block in parallel as soon as I get my Tee's from Martinm210. Is this a good idea or a waste of time?

What should my loop order be (please feel free to critique)
Rads> CPU> Res> Pump(s)> GPU> NB> Mosfets> SB> Rads

Will my Artic Silver TIM be good for all the CPU, NB, SB and Mosfet joints?

Yes, the NB backplate is on the back of your Maximus stock. It actually is pritty well made I think, and has a plastic protector built in on it, so not to short the mobo out. I curently believe the new mounting hardware that comes with our ring will be larger than the stock stuff, so drilling the holes out is my current game plan if everything looks good.

When you say "run my MOSFET block in parallel", do you mean totally seperate loop? I do think CPU> GPU> NB> Mosfets> SB> is allot to put in 1 loop? That would be 6 blocks correct? That may be a wee bit much for 1 loop, but this is my first time water cooling. We need a second opinion here...
If you are talking two loops, I can't speak to the best to seperate the blocks yet.

I think AS5 should be fine for CPU, NB, and SB. Not sure about GPU and MOSFETS....

I like Arctic Silver high-density, ceramic-based thermal compound myself, only as a preference. Both should do fine for us.

Also note, I have two MCR320s so I should be able to dissipate around 800 watts of heat. Also I'm getting a second MCP655-b. I spoke with Martinm210 about how I should go about calculating flow in Martins flow estimator and I came to roughly 1.5 to 1.7 Gpm with the EK blocks.

Well typically a parallel config will cut the resistance in half. Although you also have to account for the restriction of the tees (it might be best to use a "Y" in these situations). There is a more unpredictable (dynamic) flow created here, i.e. the flow may prefer one path over the other thus un-equal flow between the two blocks. and turblance can degrade flow as well. it would be very mild, so little of a differance i dont care :p:

Well running twin blocks would have to minimize the difference in resistance. After I picked up on the fact that running 1/8" -VS- 1/2" line, will only move your CPU temp 1 or 2 C at the most, makes me think a tad difference in flow between your two MOSFET branches, performance difference would probably be immeasurable?

If your calculations are correct on your flow rate, and I think your RAD's thermal dissipation numbers are in the ball park, I see no problems. ;)

To me decent flow, quality blocks, and lot's of RAD = Good Performance.

That has got to be the Big 3 to keep an eye on...

We can split hairs over favorite TIM, or Fans and such, but they seem like more minor factors. (Providing your using CFM rated fans designed to be used with your rad.)

I do want to add, our MOSFET chips are so small, I don't know if we can use a TIM on them....

i forgot i had a backplate this whole time! it came with a bunch of parts that Duniek made me. its for a vaper phase change system i might build later, but for now its got a home :D

yea, sure is bare metal. i think some thin armaflex or 1/4" neoprene should work.

Wow those are small! Good thing EK sends their blocks with pads :up:

I used pads on my heat sinks that attach to my MOSFETS too.

sorry about not posting pics yet. seems that my image host (Photobucket.com) is having some sort of server issues and i cant log in right now. i havnt started mounting the blocks yet anyways, so nothing real exciting to report yet.

You do realize you may have the first corrected sized ring in your hand... :)

do you have dimensions? cuz i do have lots of precision measuring tools ;)

My recomendation is take the 4 screws out of your mobo if it is not in use, and the NB backplate will fall off. It has the 4 holes on it we need to line up with. You could lay the ring on top of the backplate to check the lineup.

ahh, im using the comp as we speak!
oh well, im going to start lapping the MOSFET blocks now. I dont like the Fly Cut profile on them. plus ive got some 2 micron diamond lapping slurry ive been dieing to try out.

the NB and SB blocks are lapped from EK and look very flat and shiney :D

you see a lot of marks from the Fly Cutting tool. IMO looks like they had the table speed up a little high.

Same as the north bridge. looks like the copper blocks are the same with a different hold down (top).
