Today is launch day, or vaporware launch day?
If today is launch day, then where are the cards available?
where are the 2gb card?????
i can't wait...............
Wow
Pardon my ignorance, as I have not waited for a card launch date before. But, I had thought the launch would be similar to that of a console system, where retailers have the product stocked and ready for "launch day", but have to wait until the manufacturer's specified time before making them available for purchase. So apparently launch date actually means what, again?
Love the gigabyte. Can't way to change this god damn, i'm still on 8800 gts!
If it doesn't go etailers I'm going to fling 6 puppies at some poor saps house window every hour its not released!
I'll do it!

 found this at Hardocp. Guy asks, what happened to the shipment of 5870's? Response: "Nvidia intercepted them and rebranded them as Geforce cards ... True story."

Nice find jaredpace and great avatar btw. Although I have to agree with RaZz!, the best part is missing :D
I got a question, do all the 5870s either its the 1/2gig have the backplate?
Just asking because I see the pics of the people that already have the cards, and somehow they tend to not show the back of the card, so cant tell if they have it or not.
But sometimes from an angle it looks like they don't have it, so I'm wondering if only a specific version like the 2gig, will only have it?
I'm also interested in backplates. Are they a part of standard equipment?
The 1GB cards have the backplate, 2GB cards do not. Not sure why, but do clearly remember reading this. Sorry I can't link a source as I'm a little tied up at the moment.
Why such a fuss about some puny backplate?

Ordered mine :D. I saw a site with the 5870 Sapphire for $390 shipped but it was a no-return policy other than warranty service, and I don't ever hear good things about Sapphire's warranty. I paid $430 shipped for this Asus card.
The big question, When will you have your new GPU?
Looks like demands going to prove tough to meet. Low yields perhaps.
Hexus report
F5 F5 F5 F5...
I said a few posts behind i should have one tomorrow for testing, well... forget it. Demand is extremely high, there will be a few for orders and only next week. Product is NOT available in high quantities, hope this is not another 4770 flop
if got word that only 30card's will hit the belguim market :D.
Too much speculation, not enough results!
Anyone know the exact time the NDA ends?
Really??Damned,i need a new card BAD.My 8800 Ultra died on me a month ago,and no l uck with the warranty. So the local pc shop put in a 8400gs card...as a replacement till the new ATI'S arrive...And believe me;even TF classic is a pita to play with that :banana::banana::banana: card:rofl:
What happen to the 300,000 5870 cards ready for lauch, that eastcoasthandle mentioned?

Oh, there's no shortage in production...
...the cards are just diverted to warehouses to build oem computers instead
I hear Dell have 30,000 cards right now
yeah, screw shops, lets just ship 95% of produced inventory to :banana::banana::banana:ty pc manufacturers
Yields are fine.
Part of the reason is high demand from consumers and OEMs, plus TSMC doesn't seem to be at max capacity yet with 40nm production.
I mentioned it originally and took it back because when I relooked at the quote from the source there was no mention of when those were being supplied. I very recently heard that there will be ~50-100k cards at launch with most of them being 5870s. With that recent info I am going to guess that the 300k cards are what they ordered for '09.
Those scores arent looking SUPER great up against the GTX 295 like i previously thought.. should i even bother getting a 5870 if i got a 295?
WOW min > 60 FPS with 5870x2 on GTA4 !!
http://i33.tinypic.com/e8u7q1.jpg
Why not wait for larrabee also then? lol
Newegg did offer me a return for this 295 so maybe i could just save a little money :P
If they offered you a return go for it, if not don't bother.
I run 2560x1600, looks like Xfire scaling is GREAT there with two 5870's, but I'm not sure I want to shell out for two... really was looking to only buy one :(. Sounds like the 5850's won't show just yet either from that review's google translation, leaving my option of two 5850's closed =\.
5850 comes with Win7 (1 month after 5870)
I don't trust toms for one second, and even if it is on the right track, they're probably using poor drivers. There's no way 4870x2 can beat a 5870, even if 5870 has higher image quality or whatnot. 4870 cf and and lower clockspeeds cannot compare with a card that should be faster than 4890cf, which is already faster than 4870x2 by a nice margin. I'm waiting for anand's review...
I guess we'll see... I'm trying to decide between 1 5870, 2 5850's, or 2 5870's depending on what's available/not. I ended up canceling my order for now for the single 5870 since I am unsure of what setup I want, and some of it depends on what's available.
Is it me, or the great majority of the performance tests in that review are done with AF turned off?!
i noticed AF off in a lot of tests too
did they take it down, not working for me...
edit: okay, it's back now :)
Yeah, it just got taken down... even in many of the tests with AA on, AF was off for some reason.
I was sure I read somewhere about 5850... Can't find it anywhere now...
so I think you're right...
I just checked some previews and they all state 23th as launch date for both
sorry, my bad :(
Ps. I'm wating for 5850 also ;)
but I'll wait a bit longer... for the price drop (I'm broke now & I bought a new GPU 4 months ago)
Great, first review! But I must say, I've not enough with this one. I'm with the others saying this: what's up with the AF off on so many tests? As I see it AF is at least as important as AA, probably more. I don't think the AF performance impact should be ignored this way in a review.
On the other hand, I love those power consumption measures: ~50W less than a GTX285 idle, wow! And ~25W less load! Not bad at all for a card ~50% more performant...
I don't like much the Tom's reviews, but if those preliminar results are seen again in the following reviews, this card is a great, great product. Awesome product if you ask me. Lovely. Let's see in other reviews. I'd like to know the OC headroom also, and with voltage tweaking due to the Volterra (but probably this is too much to ask for those kind of reviews).
I think that if you're a dual GPU user you shouldn't expect a change to a single GPU from the next generation to be a worthy change performance wise. It's kinda hoping that changing your high end card to a value card from the next generation is going to improve your performance (for example, 3870->4670 or 4870->5670). Power consumption and heat, or performance/price value in the time of launch are completely different things, of course, but performance wise...
Performance wise if you expect to have an improvement, you should be aiming to a card of the same market segment than yours: HD5870 X2, or a HD5870 CF.
That said, I don't see the need to change a GTX295. But I'm not the kind of people who changes hw that fast...
I found a deactivated Asus 5870 on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-346-_-Product
I already sold my GTX295 in anticipation, can't say I'm disappointed :D. Despite playing at 2560x1600, I might just grab the 5870 1GB and be done with it. This HD 4350 is killing me and I can't wait for the 2GB versions (what's the ETA on them anyway?).
Toms hardware gave some pretty freaky results. About equal to the GTX 295, but sometimes slower than the 4870X2, and a few times faster than GTX 285 SLI. This card looks like a beast, for sure, a very inconsistent beast.
ATI cards are generally very inconsistent. Because some games are nvidias meant to be played, so those are faster because of codes nvidia provides to speed it up.
Performance per watt is what is the most impressive. OBR and Benchzoner were right on the dot, generally slower than the gtx 295 but it can catch up to the 295 with enough resolution and enough AA enabled.
Performance doesn't impress me those that much because this would lose to cf4890s, because in half the cases its losing to cf4870s. Sure it could be drivers, but since this is rv7xx on steroids, I expected good performance from the get go.
However if a gt300 does exist I can see it slaughtering the 5870, and even if it is a couple hundred dollars more, it might be worth it.
I can see the GT300 beat the 5870 because is still 3 months away and anything can happen. Although is going to cost you I'd be willing to pick up a 295 now for cheap :D I think to have a chance agains the GT300 it should at least be 150% more powerfull than the current GTX295

Another review fellows...they are coming slowly, but coming... I just wanna see one about the 5850!
interesting what this thing can do, wonder whats the real world heat output of a single card. toasty ok or hot hot
I am in the process of building a new rig and the only piece I don't have now is a video card. Been waiting a week for the 5850 but starting to think if it is worth $300 since I only game at max 1920x1200. Would picking up one of the current cheaper ATI or nVidia options be the best move?
I am starting to lean towards a 275 with a cheap physx card or a 4890. What do you guys think?
