FB to VR, VR 100kOm to GND, or otherwise?
Factotum, 47k ohm is what? Resistance between FB and GND?
Why did You measure that resistor? Is that connecting FB to GND?
You need to know resistance between FB and GND.
thx.
from datasheet:
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2097/pdf.th.png
FB and GND - where?
You have to find some bigger GND point near that IC. You found FB allready, so just measure resistance between FB and GND. Remove card from PC before that ofc!
Always double-check all measurements. For example between directly pin4 and pin18.
If 1,1k ohm is right, then 20k ohm VR works fine.
double-check and done :banana::banana::banana:

@ overshocked- I have benched 1.6v without OCP..on 4870 mod... as well, the GPU did much better with more 16v input caps. I added 6.3v output caps, with little to no gain.
Thanks cl3p20,
So what like 1000uf caps?
So any of these will do?
http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Compon...FR6Z2AodAXR8Jg
Thanks.
Yes those will work just fine. I like Nichicon.. but they are expensive.. Chemi-con work good too and better prices.
kk thanks m8,
PMed on OCN.
So i got a cheap 4850 to replace my dying 8800GTS 320mb.
4850 512mb reference design
accelero S1
Vrm-heatsink sawed of the stock heatsink
Medium-speed 120mm fan blowing on vrm heatsink
But seems i got a crap overclocker...
Stock 675/1025 stable
1.3v 735-740
1.35v 760-780
1.4v 800-810
Currently running 800/1000 1.39-1.4v
Am i doing anything wrong? Only using Vgpu mod since ram mod has killed cards. Using the stock bios.
Max temps after 2 hours of Battlefield Bad company (roomtemp 23-24°c , summer!)
Core 52°
DISPIO 52.5°
MEMIO 65.0°
SHADERCORE 57°
Seems okay, certainly with hot ambient temps. I have decent caseflow and the 120mm is blowing on the ram, it's fine without ramheatsink.
But i was wondering, has anyone been running his 4850 on 1.4v for 1year+ ? It's only a 60euro card but it'd still be silly to blow it up!
Playing Bad company at 1280x1024 All high 2xAA and smooooth gameplay! Too bad i have a P35 16/4x motherboard or i'd get a second one for crossfire
HI any1 can help me with a pencil mod
for my 4850 Video card ? Is a his 4850
and has a non reference pcb ,
can any1 point me
where is the resistor
i need to shade?
His 4850 Fan Edition....
Also His has a 4830 fan edition same
Pcb maybe some1 know how to do a pencil on that !!
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3355/img4463cpia.jpg
http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/i...re4850_mod.jpg
Its still the R685 resistor. ;)
So the resistor i need to shade is R685 ? on other pictures i saw is r1687 like in this picture :http://yfrog.com/gi4850shphj the bord was a 4850 sapphire
and also same card a person told him to do like in this picture http://yfrog.com/5bvmodareawm9j
but the guy shade the r1687 resistor and it worked like in the 1st picture ! Also for the stock PCb the read of scheme is not like in this picture ??http://yfrog.com/jv4850stockj
Maybe im wrong but if im not the r1687 resistor is shade !! Thanks for your Help
Hmm..do you have a DMM to see if the resistors are connected, I cannot make out the paths visually from the pics, and have sold my 4850's. The R685 is just adjacent to the location the other users mod'd from..they could be connected..
I´ve searched for days after an hardmod for ASUS 4850 TOP mem mod.
Got the GPU mod finished but I want to mod the memory too :)
Hope some one knows!
Im not sure if all 4850 TOP have the same pcb. If yours have same I had, then all you need to adjust Vmem is a 100kOhm VR between the blue marks. ;)

The resistor R 685 and R 1687 and not connected ... so my question is what is hte resistor i need to shade ? R685 or r 1687 ?? Can any1 check my links with pictures to confim whats the resistor you need to shade on the stock PCB ?
On other tutorial you can shade like here to get more voltage on the gpu

On my VGA i have the r650 resistor (is the resistor ) not a free space , should i shade that ?? Il appreciate any ideas and Help ! Thanks
I got a Powercolor 4850 1GB and it has a version of the uP6201BQ that doesn't have a mod. The writing underneath uP6201BQ is VLP 86H.

DavyGT, nothing is different. FB pin is still pin #13. Trace it and find a good soldering point. Measure default FB->GND resistance and You'll have Vmod.
I already found pin 13 but how do I trace it?
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...T/b200a39c.jpg
No, that's #6. See one post above Your previous post here. There is FB marked with green.
EDIT: should be this trace:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/all/up6201.jpg
That pic is not that good, so I can be wrong. You can confirm it with DMM.
Hi guys!
I have a problem understanding the layout of my non-reference ASUS 4850. It is ssame as this one.
Ceemic, you suggest to measure vGPU on the capacitors:
http://i8.fastpic.ru/thumb/2010/0725...3f94eb4da.jpeg
But the voltage I measure between the positive and negative leads of the capacitor is about 0.1V higher than it should be. Even more so, the voltage between the pos and neg leads of the cap is significantly different from the voltage between pos lead of the cap and ground wire of the molex connector.
And I can tell for sure (judging by the temperature and OC) the voltage I've measured isn't vGPU. Where can I find the right voltage?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I've checked my DMM, it's error doesn't exceed 1% when measuring 1.3V
DavyGT. If resistance between FB pin and that point on that SMD cap is 0ohm, then yes, they are connected and You can use that spot for soldering. Now measure resistance between FB and GND.
@lex, why do You measure Vgpu between cap legs? Ofc You have to use a proper GND.
I have measured resistance between 3 PCIE Ground Pins and a screw holding the cooler.
2 of the PCIE Ground pins and the screw shows a resistance of 3.86 Ohms on the 20k scale.
The last PCIE Ground Pin gets nothing.
Also, I have found that capacity to connected to 2 resistors. Does that count as a pencil mod?
Edit: How do I find the VGPU read points?
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...T/92d1fe5d.jpg
ceemic, thanks, my bad. I was absolutely sure the other leg has to be ground. But still, readings between the positive leg of cap and the ground from PSU are too high. Where can I find proper ground on the PCB?
DavyGT, then You can use 100k ohm VR.
It depends to what these resistors are connected. I never use pencil-mods and don't recommend it.
For Vgpu You can use PWM cap legs for example. Similar to: http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/hd4850..._mod01_mon.jpg
Do a layout pic so we can suggest the best place for measuring.
@lex, there is no difference between molex GND or GND near IC; maybe ~0,005V.
I don't have a series of capacitors on my card. All my card's capacitors are near the PWM.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...T/8a415f3f.jpg
@lex, why it can't be 1,25V? Sounds pretty ok. Sadly I don't remember my different HD4850's def Vgpus.
DavyGT, try these:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/all/hd4850_measure.jpg
@lex, my Asus HD4850 was also very bad clocker. It's probably due to the custom PCB/PWM...
ceemic, thanks for info! I'll try to swap my card for reference, then.
@ceemic
I have a short circuit but OCP is not disable :(
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...5388_OCP_m.jpg
D0m|nat0R, how do You know OCP is "kicking" in?
work on 2D with 1.4 1.5V but in 3D kicking to 0V all over 1.3 1.35
hi
how voltmod my powercolor hd4870 512mb,ddr5 PCS+ rev1.0 ?
gpu voltcontroler NCP5388
where need put resistor to voltmod GPU ?
resistor=? ohm,kilo ohm
petrakov, use search in this thread. Here are many different cards with that IC.
Pin #19 is FB. Look where it goes to find better soldering point. Remove card from PC and measure resistance between FB and GND. Multiply that value with 20x and You'll know what VR to use.
powercolor HD4870 512mb PCS+ rev. 1.0
voltcontroler NCP5388 pin 19 ist VFB
see thes pic
how to connect VR?
pic 1 -GND to VR to point A?
pic2 -GND to VR to PIN19 ?
Where do I measure the voltage?
please help
how to put the VR and where to voltage example of GPU?
petrakov, You can use any spot that is directly connected to FB pin. Use some bigger for easy soldering. The "A" on pic1 seems the best.
Vgpu measuring points:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/all/powercolor_hd4870.jpg
thanks broo !!!! :)
I can put VR directly on PIN19 thes ist not problem for me,but will be correctly?
Which is better
GND-VR-DIRECT PIN19?
GND-VR- dot A
stok Vgpu=1.295v Vmem=1.570v in 3D
these days will put VR and will share results
voltcotroler memory ist uP6101BU8 VFB = PIN6
Is it possible Pencil mod?
see PDF pic, thes ist principled schematic uP6101BU8
(sorry for my bad anglish)
petrakov, if You shade that resistor with pencil, Vmem will drop, not rise :p:
This is right:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/all/up6101_pencil.jpg
But I still suggest VR, not pencil. Mem chips are very sensitive about too intensive voltage rise.
blue resistor is 1400 ohm
VR=?
GND to VR to direct PIN6?
What is resistance between GND and FB? 1,4k ohm?
ncp53388
R1 - direct GND from 2x6pin to direct pin 19 = 15k
R2 - direct pin 14 AGND to direct pin 19 = 31k
What is right?
R 1 x 20 =VR?
R 2 x 20 =VR?
uP6101BU8
direc pin 3 (GND) to direct pin 6 =1.5k x ? = VR
You need to measure more. There can't be any difference between GND and AGND.
For Vmem mod I suggest 50k ohm VR.
Tomorrow I will make new measurements.but I think that there is no error.is measured 3 times
tanks agen broo!!!
direct GND from 2x6pin to direct pin 19 = 15k thes ist correctly resistance
15k x 20 = 300K VR?(470k standart)
i make vmod memory wet VR 47K,mod ist work, now U=1.710v (stok=1.570v)memory clock now 4500mhz (not work in 4600 - artefacts)
what is the maximum voltage DDR5? (Vmem=?v max not damage memory)
I haven't seen any 47k or 470k multi-turn VR's. They must be ~15-20 turn, like these: http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/_trimmers.jpg
Usually they are 1k, 5k, 10k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 200k, 250k, 500k etc.
500k ohm is very safe to use.
thes ist VR 470k (0-470k)(474=47 wet 0000)
im put thes VR in GPU vmod today
vmod memory ist make now and works god,but i dont no Umax memory (ddr5)?
This is one-turn potentiometer. I wouldn't use it, because a little adjustment equals too big voltage change. Too unstable and dangerous.
vmod ist ready :)
CEEMIC,
SPECIAL THANKS,BROO!!!

I guess I could send you a few of those, if you'd like :)
@lex, have they really 40 turns? That's pretty nice.
ceemic, I beleive so. Never tried to count, though.
hi agen frends
my voltmod work wery good but now im need overclocked more GPU
but Ugpu max=1.400V (1.410V gpu automatic off,no video signal)
how to turn off this volt protection?
powercolor HD4870 PCS+ 512mb now overclock - 860/4800,1.385v/1.675v
GPU max temp ist load 60C
MEM max temp 75C
room temp 25-30C
1.41V seems to be very early for OCP.
Is that card using the uP6201 to control vGPu?
Ok, just had a look at the previous posts.
OCP can be nearly disabled by connecting Pin12 and Pin13 directly. I guess by simply adding a resistor the OCP limit can be raised step by step.
Can you pleasy check if that's the right one:
i see PDF NCP5388
pin12 to pin13 directly = disible voltprotection
but I am not very suresure it will work
you think that will work?
I think it will. In fact it's not really disabling but setting the OCP to a very high level which is nearly the same.
Instead of directly connecting both I would add a VR and tune it down to check if you can raise vGPU above those 1.41V.
Can you please check if that resistor I've marked is connected to Pin 12 & 13 and if so what's the reistance between both pins?
pin12 to pin 13,R=15k ohm
see pic thes ist resistors conect to pin 12 and 13 and GND
Ok I would just use the one I've already marked: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&d=1282824804
You'll probably doing well with a 200k VR.
how conect VR
VR to pin13 to GND?
VR to pin12 and pin13?
shem 1 or shem 2? how conect VR
VR between Pin12 and Pin13. Just solder it in parallel to the marked resistor. Should be way easier than messing around with those little Pins at the IC :)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&d=1282855864
tanks my frend from germany :)
im put VR paralel to pin12 and pin13 but not direc in IC
Im use anader soldier wet direct conet pin 12 and pi13 :)
I do not like pencil mods, resistance is very unstable and here ist need precise value of resistance
I make thes manipulation wet VR resistor :)
Have you done this before(disable OCP)?
what video card with your?
I've never had real OCP issues with any card, even though I've tested 'a few'.
Nevertheless I did some searches and that's the way how to change/disable OCP on NCP5388. So let's see how it works for you
operation is ready and work
now pin 12 connect direct wet pin 13 (disable OVP) and Ugpu=1.430v
1.430V=860Mhz max
1.450V=860Mhz max
1.480V=865Mhz max
im testing videocard but max frequency ist 860Mhz (free artefact)
card work 860/4800 thes ist max frequency overclock (bad luck)
thanks for help
That bites... at least the OCP mod seems to be working.
im make new test
artifacts are of RAM memory-(wery hot 89C)
run test 870/4400 (Ugpu=1.430V) and no artefact :)
i make more test wet difrent frequency memory and will localize max stable GPU frequency/RAM frequency,my goal is 900mhz GPU :D
Good to hear it keeps scaling. Go for that 900MHz :)
Hey guys,
I've had a gainward HD4850 for quite a while now, and it's showing its age, so I thought about volt modding it. My soldering skills leave much to be desired so I would have to try a pencil mod. The only issue is the board is non stock, identical to this one in fact:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/hd4850gs/ (shown on page 43).
If anyone can assist me in identifying the correct resistor to pencil, it would be much appreciated. If needs be, I can take my card out for some pictures but I cannot remove the heat sink as I have no thermal paste at the moment.
Just wanted to report in before I retire my 4850's. They are reference models, been at nearly 1.55vGPU each for the past year (under water, of course). Temps stay at low to mid 40's, 950/1200 bench stable but certain games are picky with the memory, then picky with the core. I found that overall 900/1150 to be stable.
Is there any mods out for the XFX HD4870 with the egg cooler?
Think the print is there own design.
Here is a picture of the voltage chip.
measure the resistance between point and GND after that you adopt trimmer 20x bigger than him
Wait for some confirmation of this
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...k/IMG_6812.jpg
just volt modded my sapphire non-ref 4870...vcore mod worked great!
Went on to solder read wires and something was wrong. I soldered the wire to the output side of a choke, booted up with probe measuring and got the 1.33v that it gives stock...but mobo stopped on 2b error! I quickly took off mod and read wire but now it is continuing to do the same thing! Like somehow attaching a wire that wasnt connected to anything killed it!:confused:
if anyone knows what may be up that would be amazing!
Hi guys.
I apologize for my English is bad, but I'm Italian;-)
I wanted to ask if anyone knows where I can find and read points vgpu vmem HD 4870 1024 MB Club 3D the pcb looks identical to that of the PowerColor welding points are the same even with the meter readings are the same, I ask also that resistance should I use vgpu for 50k right? vmem resistances used for that? , OCP is required to go to 1.40v lotr?
if someone did it and I do explain where I would be grateful!
I've got a pot gpu that can not wait!
Thanks guys.
