Kondik: I think you should get the SLI one. With IFX it's hard to mount a big CPU cooler. You have to modify the heatpipes so that the heat spreader to come near the VGA card, and even then I'm not sure it will fit any of the coolers you want for the CPU.
Do you have a VGA Zalman V1000 ?:)

Thanks to it is hard to mount the South Bridge IFX Thermalright one scratches the another .. nothing serious but they're really tight .. one day they will get stuck and i won't be able to take the VGA out of the PCIe anymore :yepp:
You have to make some mesurements to see how Thermalright HR-05 SLI will fit near VGA, It's very tricky what you want to do, but I think that with right air cooling you'll get good temps.

About your thought concerning x48.. well, since it's my systems for everyday use i can't wait for it, i really need it _now_. And some stores here in germany are selling it for about 200, so if ppl say it's a solid board, i think i'll buy it. But let's wait for some more reactions.. maybe someone found something to grouse about?
I think you'll probably end up with 50/50 on the positives to negatives.
I think that most negatives are coming from people pushing things to extreme which will always means problems are likely, and those who also have a weak point in the system such as cheap memory, or an area in the BIOS thats not set right.
I'd almost given up on this board until I found the ABCD timings selection in the memory section, since then what I thought was duff board has been better than anything else I've used before.
I agree with waiting for some more input though, as I am only 1 happy user out of many that are using it.
I can't agree more to that. I won't be pushing the board until it catches fire or something so i think i'll be on the safe side since many ppl seem to be happy with it. But while i'm at it i think i'll let my e6600 enjoy a lapping session. Until now i was to lazy because i have no idea how difficult it'll be to get the coollaboratory stuff off of the chip, i used it for the first time here (i usually went with ac3).Quote:

TRD aways 1 number higher than GA-X38-DQ6 on same freq...and need a lot of vMCH to do what the DQ6 does...

booting at 550MHz+ is no easy task for a mobo but it shouldn't be that big an issue :confused:

Just put the BIOS file on an FAT32 formatted stick, then reboot and follow the instructions, it's really easy and safe. I never updated any BIOS via Windoze tools, only floppy/usb, works like a charm. Nowadays at least, that is. ;)Quote:

haha funny how the x38 its eol, and intel delayed x48 to march... so availability is april...
Seeing how well these boards have clocked for pretty much everyone, i don't really see any reason to wait for x48. They're just binned parts of the same exact chip. I mean, other parts, like the CPU are going to be the bottleneck anyway, and the straps you need to get memory decent at those speeds suck. Also, what would anybody need more than 550 FSB for anyway. Any FSB above 450, or atleast 500 is going to give you worse and worse memoryperformance in terms of TRD. I'd get a decent x38 and spend my money on an unlocked CPU instead,- but thats me. Honestly dont see what the big deal is about insane FSB's in terms of actual performance.

I flashed to F8d beta, no changes from the previous betas...it's become VERY obvious to me now that i can NO LONGER reach a FSB of 425MHz witout an increase of (G)MCH and FSB voltages.
Clearly Gigabyte have altered the bios since F6b beta and up, so much so a voltage increase is nesscary. I have found through trial and error i need to increase (G)MCH voltage by 0.150V in order to not only POST but to boot in Windows.
The problem is that my overclock lasts for a few shutdowns and reboots...but then fails and the bios disables my overclock. So now i am trying to also increase the FSB voltage by 0.15V...hopefully this will hold my OC and increase stability.

As a side note, i have just ordered two new WD Rattors...my drives have the original 00NLR1 firmware. Hoping the new drives come with 00NLR5 and later, i've seen 150GB Raptors with a 00NLR7 firmware...i'll report what i get.
I have 2 x 36GB Raptors (16MB cache) in RAID0 on the ICH9R cont. using the 00NLR4 firmware, Average read in HDTach just over 156MB/s...:up:

Hey Kondik, your board died? Why, did you torture it? No offense, i'm just asking because mine arrived yesterday and i wonder if it's really solid..
As it seem not just my 965p-ds3 died, but it took my e6600 with it. I went through the trouble of lapping the HS, put everything together, just to realise that the chip must be dead. The board keeps rebooting every 5 seconds. Gpu, ram mainboard heatsinks all get warm but the cpu stays cold. Ordered q6600 now, so let's see.

Do a reset a few seconds after power on. You should try this untill you get the right moment, and the bios thinks that there is an error, and resets to defaults frequencyes :) .Quote:

PC freezed instantly so i jumped to the power cord switched it of and i saw a piece of platic head of the transistor and a terrible smell ... imo it was just a bad piece .. the board worked still but nothing could be attached to the two bottom PCI ports .. if i put XFi Elite in it the system freezed from time to time ... so i RMAed it and ended up wit ... Well my X38DQ6 just died of a corrupted bios. It still goes but dead lan port, and general flakyness etc.
Its wierd that its the only board that has failed for me ever...but its still my favorite board. At least when it was working.
I guess those early reports about X38 chipset problems werent completely solved. Anyhow RMAed it but as someone mentioned there are none around to replace it so hopefully it gets replaced with a X48 in the coming weeks.
Until then its back to my P5B deluxe.

POWERING OFF

Try tricking the bios into thinking it had a BAD boot attempt.
shutdown, flick psu switch off, press power on button to fully discharge the system, flick psu back on, press power on button, wait about 2 secs, press and hold power on button to shutdown the system, fingers crossed press power on and pray
Getting scared and desperate stage.
SWAP your memory to alt slots, eg. from 1&3 to 2&4 or vice versa.
Also try each mem stick in each mem slot, one at a time until you can boot into bios.
might also want to unplug and then reseat psu to mb power, also have a good look and make sure everything is "ok" with connections.
If you get into the bios again :)
Change all settings MANUALLY to default cpu and mem values, make sure you put correct perf setting trD and give enough juice to the mem.
Also if you were experimenting with a new bios rev. flash back to a more trusted and stable version.

Hey guys I have the x38 ds4 and I was wondering if the stock northbridge cooler will be ok? Is there a water block that will fit it if not? I took it off and looked at it and it has a thermal pad on there, I guess if I use the stock cooling block I need to remove the pad and put some arctic silver?
Hey guys what is the "LLC bug" ? I never heard about that one, can anyone tel me please? I might be affected by it (Memory instability) but I don't know what it really consists of.

I sweaped in other memory modules, and then back, weird.
But now that board is priming fine E8400 at 1.4V Vcore and 8x525MHz.

The BIOS is F7 and has been for over a month, and I had recently put everything back to stock settings except the memory set to 2.2 from 1.8 defualt.
After doing a BIOS reset, and removing the memory, then going to one stick, it eventually booted with an error message saying the BIOS was corrupted and to choose a the last known good version.
By then the cabin had heated up somewhat, so I'm not sure if it was the cold or what?
Has anyone else seen an issue with the X38 DQ6 not booting in cold temperatures?

I am doing some benching in my garage. I just finished with an Abit IP35 Pro and have swapped it out for a GA X38 DQ6 just yesterday. The first thing I did was boot up and flash to F7 BIOS. I then went ahead with a fresh install of WinXP Pro with the ICH9R RAID Drivers last night. After install I went into Windows and installed the chipset drivers and loaded up all of the testing/benching apps I use. I left BIOS settings at default and shut it down.
This morning I went into the garage and the temp was exactly 0C. The PC booted right up with no problems. I then began my OC session. Here it is four hours later...the temp is just about 4C in the garage...and the OC is going very well. I am at 4.1ghz (456x9) using only 1.3000vcore.
I don't think the cold is affecting your machine, unless there is some moisture/humidity incorporated with it.

It's bone dry in here as far as I can see, not sure whats going on with this board.
I have another board in the same type of case, an Asus P5W64 WS and that never has any issues and that is on the desk next to this one.
Sometimes it boots straight away other days it several attempts and then boots, and today it took 20 mins to get it going, other times if I shut it down and leave it over night, it requires the PSU to be turned completely off and on to allow it to boot, others days it starts without needing the psu turned off.
Its now been running for 7 hours with no issues what so ever.
When it is running its fine, also not sure why the corrupted BIOS message was displayed.
Now I feel real stupid.
Found the problem, 1 of the dominator mem modules was dead.
I'd forgotten to put one back in after messing about 'thought I had' and when it finally did go back 'DEAD'.
Basic error, just wasn't even contemplating the memory being dead.
This was running stock for last week as I'd clocked it back to do a clean Vista install and hadn't tweaked it back up.
I seem to remember one board being known as the quality RAM killer, but can't remember if it was this one.
If it is, then the X38 DQ6 seems of have claimed another victim.
Still don't see how a dead mem stick can be the cause of the corrupted BIOS though.

Ok that constant booting cycle is happening to me too. Yesterday i went from a running 425x9@1.5vcore with my shiny new q6600 to everything standard (except for vddr wich i left @2.2v). Since then it starts, stays on for maybe 2 secs, shuts down, and then everything again. If i don't kill the power it does so all day. I already tried everything, it still happens even if nothing is on the board besides the cpu... i'm out of ideas by now. :shakes:
Yup, happened to me too after i flashed to 8-series bios. Seems they did some changes to vMCH and default-straps that dont quite work yet.
The workaround is to insert som other DDR memory that are autodetected at another more common strap.
Bottom line is 8-series wont work with a reset cmos + certain types of memory. So you have to set up the bios, save to cmos, and then plug in the memory youre going to be using, if you set a certain combo of settings that cause the system to be unable to return to defaults, you have to swap out the memory again.

I have gotten the mobo up and running. First thing I did was flash to F7 using the USB stick method. I must say this is a nice easy way to flash!
I am not crazy about the way they work the voltages in the BIOS. + this and - that...why not just let us choose a voltage like most other BIOSes?
Anyway in basically the same conditions as an Abit IP35 Pro this mobo did a little bit better with slightly less voltages. I was able to run Orthos blend for more than an hour at 4.4ghx (489x9). using only 1.39vcore. Obviously that wasn't stable and I didn't want to go over 1.4vcore, so I lowered the clock.
4.3ghz (478x9) ran the blend for more than three hours on 1.38vcore.

Temp reads 36C (core 1) 32C (core 0) idle...as always, this NEVER changes. Load was 36

For some reason I cannot get 500mhz stable on this board OR the ABit IP35 Pro. I will spend the day trying to get stable at 500x8. Any ideas on how to do this wil be appreciated.
I dont know what state ur in Dinos but the 3 biggest suppliers in Melbourne dont have them. 2 of them dont have any Gigabyte X38 boards left, 1 has only X38TDQ6 and X38DS4 models. Maybe things are different in Sydney or whatever.Quote:

Truely dead, RMA'ing back to Corsair now.
Anyone have the X38 DS4 notice that the vcore setting raises higher that the actual actual bios setting when loaded? I have mine set on 1.51875 in the bios and it idles at 1.488 according to Cpuz. When I start prime95 it jumps up to 1.552 and sometimes blinks to 1.56. Also I am using bios F3A.
Edit: It only does it with prime95 small ftts, I check WCG and it does not do it with it.
