Your chips are nice, however, YOU DONT HAVE ANY VALID LONG TERM STABILITY TEST!

So therefore YOU CANT say your stable. Not 1 screenie has you posting a prime longer then 1 hour. All your primes show less then 1 hour stress testing.

I have a 37B and you need AT LEAST 1.375Vcore on it to hit PRIME95 longer then 2 hours. After 2 hours the chip will fail at that voltage.

PLEASE post a longer prime, at least 3 hours if you cant do the 7hour standard.


Otherwise i might as well bust out the 4.1ghz which last only 10 min...

Would you guys mind posting the complete Batch# as in L737B123 when you submit some results. I am compiling a list of Batch# with their respective results (screen shots) and the VID.

I think the VID is telling a story and that is, the lower the VID the less VCore is required to hit a standard speed in this case 3.6GHz and thus lower temps.
Not all L737B or any other Batch# has the same performance even with the same Batch# they are all different but the one variable that can explain performance is VID. I have not taken into account MB, RAM, person OC experience and these factors could explain differences.

Yes my mistake, by "do it". Somehow 3.6GHz locked into my head last night even though he's at 3.8GHz hence 1.392V seems much more reasonable, or very good actually.

It seems VID is a very good indicator of yield quality, but not the only one that determines the end result (overclockability etc.). I guess some silicon behaves different than others above a certain MHz speed hence why VID only helps up to level X (by using a low Vcore), but then the silicion chemical properties come into play.

I would think it helps having a low VID version chip. Couple this with a good yield and 4GHz at around 1.45V effective should be attainable, no? This could be done on air I reckon.

I haven't no, I was just trying to make the point that I think extreme cooling would be required to hit 3.8Ghz with under 1.3v. With extreme cooling you tend to need less vcore to get the same clocks as water/air.

I am currently testing my Q6600 (L737B026), here is the results at 3.63GHz (403 FSB)

I dont have any problems with core temp since i followed this http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...8&postcount=43 . Before I was getting a load loop due to driver signing. on Vista x64 as latest KBs removed ability to disable driver signing permantly.
That said I dont use coretemp much anymore as I have switched to using PC wizard 2008 http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php - when you minimise it you get a small display of core temps,CPU usage a,GPU and CPU temps in top right of your screen.Try it - its neat and its accurate plus it has a load of other features like everest - doesnt show VID though!.

Now I prime 3.6GHz @ 1.32v

If it's a L737xxxx then it can do 3.6GHz around 1.27-1.288V, especially as yours has a low VID hence is one of the better yields. Give it a try, the chances are you can tweak it a little further. My L737B209 does 3.6GHz at around 1.27V and has a VID of 1.2250 so 120mv higher than yours.

I'm currently testing 3.825GHz at 1.37-1.38V with Core temps up to 70C.

Well,

first; not all L737's have low VIDs, so not all L737's will do 3.6GHz under 1.3V.

second; not all low VIDs mean high OCs..

I've had 8 L737's in the past couple of weeks, & only 4 of them did 3.6GHz @ (sub) 1.3V.. 2 of them were L737A & 2 L737B. What I found with all the low VID ones (exept 1) is that they run nice on or below 1.3V up untill about 3.65V, but than scale like cr#p needing 1.475-1.5V for 3.8-3.85GHz, & most of them hardly get to 4GHz with 1.6V.

However the one I have now (L737A679) has a VID of 1.3125 & needs 1.375V for 3.6GHz, but does 4GHZ easy just under 1.5V, so you just never know untill you test the critters.

Conclusion ;) ; a SLACR with low VID is nice if you want to run at 3.6GHz, anything above 3.8GHz is a lottery.

Interesting anecdotal observation that you have from your 8 samples. I know from my E6600 experience that what you say is correct, that not all low VID will mean High Clocks and vice versa, but I think from what I have seen there is a high correlation between Low VID and High Clocks, it may not be 100% as evidenced by your sample, but from what I have seen so far already, a low VID is desirable if only to run it at 3.6GHz 24/7 which is what I am running mine at.

Mine is an L737B026 and I have an 8h Prime95 on 1.408v and will try for a 4.0+ SuperPi run, I won't be running Prime95 at 4GHz+ as the temps start to get high and I am on Air.
Your comments about not scaling linearly does hold true especially when you get above a certain threshold.

Would you like to document your 8 samples with their corresponding VID and Batch# and along with whatever data you have collected.

Having a Q6600 with a 1.30V VID doesn't guarantee you it will run at 3.6GHz. I had two such chips with this VID and neither ran at 3.6GHz realiably enough to work in Prime95 hence be classified as stable.

It's down to luck really. Usually a lower VID means more chance to reach 3.6GHz or beyond at a lower voltage.

The 1.2875V VID Q6600 I had needed 1.43V to reach 3.6GHz but my 1.2250V VID Q6600 only needs 1.27V (one of the very good L737xxxx chips though).

For 3.6GHz it's really anything between 1.27V to 1.48V.

FWIW...I have seen low vids that clock poorly and I have seen high vids that clock very well. You are putting too much emphasis on the vid. It will either clock or not, plain and simple. I am not so sure anymore that a particular batch will consistently clock well like the old L629Bxxx E6600 or Xeon3060 chips will do. It seems like any Q6600 G0 stepping will do 3.6GHz with reasonable vcore. The key is getting to 4.0GHz with less than 1.5vcore. If you can do that then you have a very good chip. Especially considering it is a quad.

i have given it up to 1.48 trying to get stable at 3.6 but it wont even prime for 5mins..
i guess 3.5 is the limit for this.. which even at this clock it requires 1.46vcore

is there any particular store that has been selling good batches?

Well, I have been pretty happy with this crappy Q6600 (B3). You just have to shove it voltage to make her work!

I have two 1.325 VIDs, niether will do 3.6 stable. One does 3.3 the other 3.5 stable on air. My 1.2375 VID will do 3.9 stable, but is on water also...

I tried by upping the vCore to 1.36v, but got errors from Prime95 after 10 minutes. Also, CPU was getting Hot, about 68C.

hot for a quad is around 80C, 1.36V is low for most cases(except probably a few and the new batches), push the voltage a bit higher... have mine on 1.375V with 3420Mhz temps not exceeding 70C. but with 3.6Ghz, i hit 86C with vcore of 1.450V... LOL

BTW ambient here is 30C

hopefully i'll be posting mine today. i just have some questions.

i'm using prime95 25.5 for q6600 G0 however when i load it up and start blend test, it basically locks everything up. i can move the mouse, and hear the cpu under load, but i can't alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del. even at stock fsb it seems to hog all resources and i can't even stop it. pc doesn't lock up, just seems to suck all resources. any ideas?

You need whatever vcore and other tweaks it takes too get your CPU stable at 3.6(if it can do 3.6) Just cos other are achieving 3.6 it on lower than 1.4v doesnt mean your CPU will do it. I need 1.425v with PLL 1.6,FSB=1.4,NB-1.4 on a P5K premium. for prime stable and thats with good ballistix 8500 memory . I would start with upping the vcore and loosening the memory to 5,5,5,15 - if you get it stable then try tightening the memory. Better cooling than a Zalamsn 9500 would also be a good idea -e.g. 120 extreme or ultima-90(nice small profile) will give better performance.Try MX-2 paste - doesnt need to cure and good as AS5.

all voltages are auto.

my problem is i can't test using orthos, prime95, anything because it seems to fill the processor up and i can't even close them.

i'm thinking its the board, my old board ran orthos, prime95 everything perfectly.

(i'll post my batch later, i hit 4ghz this morning on 1.550v and 1.3v fsb)

fixed it! was 2 versions of prime95 conflicting.

I was going to buy a ZALMAN VF1000 cooler for the 8800GT but with the REV 2 BIOS upgrade it seems to be fine.

From my experience VID has been important. I've had 4 chips and typically had 4 chips with High VIDS. 2 x 1.325v 1 x 1.3125v and 1 x 1.2875v. In terms of overclocking the lower the VID the better the overclock has been hence why i have kept the 1.2875v chip. I run it 24/7 at 3.6Ghz with 1.4 (about 1.392 loaded) for games but its not prime stable. To get that i need about 1.42v loaded i would imagine. But managed to do superpi 1m at 4.158Ghz with 1.544v on air (as long as its cold enough) so it aint too bad. I would love one of these real low VID chips but after 4 attempts i've given up trying, lucks never been my fortia (however its spelt).

Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting my Q6600 G0 to 3Ghz - can't get it stable above 2.8Ghz atm. Have tried 9 x 333 and 8 x 375 to get past the FSB hole these 650i SLI boards seem to have but no dice.

Well I am not familiar with Gigabyte Boards, but you have a nice processor there, as some else with that Batch# say it has a VID of 1.2000v, so you should get to 3.0GHz with no problems.

It appears you have more than enough Voltage there at 1.375v (you can drop to 1.25v, even stock voltage of 1.20v is possible to reach 3.0GHz), what about increasing the NB Voltage (mine is at 1.60 and I have reach 3.8GHz P95 stable), did you check memory voltage (mine is at 2.1v for 3.6GHz see signature).

FSB should be 334 (to reach 3.0GHz) which means at 1/1 your Memory should be capable of running at 668MHz. (ie Min requirement DDR2 667/PC2 5300). So can your board do FSB 333 (I would think most Boards would be able to do that).

If you think you are constrained by your board, what upgrading the Bios to a different version? Maybe Gigabyte has a fix, if it is a board problem.

Deffo your motherboard, the 650 don't clock quads very well. :(

Get a P35 motherboard like the P5K-E and you will hit 3.6Ghz with ease.

PSU is an Antec True Power II 550W - I have thought that was an issue - especially seeing as it likes to just shut itself off suddenly while ocing, which I've never encountered before - crashes, BSODs, error msgs - yes. A hard switch-off? Never.

I'll give your suggestions a go and see what happens - only thing is I'm not sure what the default voltages for the NB / SB / VCC / FSB are - as the Gigabyte BIOS only shows +0.05v changes from the default (without actually telling you what that is)

BIOS is latest F2 version but I have a feeling the 650i boards don't oc quad-cores that well (as Devious) has mentioned. Reading up Shamino's review of the same board a while back, he was only able to hit 330Mhz stable with a quad-core before he had to volt mod the board. Dang. Shoulda done my homework better.

Have had this chip for a little while, actually got it from another member here. I wasn't able to get even 3.6 stable whith my DS3-R, massive vdrop/vdroop. My wife got me an early present, a P5K premium. :up: Loving this board.

3.6 @ 1.425 in bios will be my 24/7 WCG chrunching setting. Temps stay right around 50c with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and 2 yate loon medium fans in push pull.

BIOS is latest F2 version but I have a feeling the 650i boards don't oc quad-cores that well (as Devious) has mentioned. Just as a guide my defaults on my board are NB 1.25v, SB 1.50v and FSB=266, but this may not be applicable to you as manufacturers have different designs and components for boards they make.

I think you should do the volt mod as that may be your problem with this board, appears 330 FSB is your limit without the mod.

Whatever you do keep your processor for your next upgrade, it is a good one, but you can check CoreTemp to confirm that the VID is indeed 1.200v

At full load temps will increase to low 60's. 1.625V on Vcore for Orthos stable. For just running Windows and playing FEAR, (Not benchmarking), I keep it at 1.4875V.

As for the water setup, it is an open loop. Water from the sink goes into the loop and then exits to the tub. So, the water temp is at 50 - 55 degrees!

Man, people are getting some nice overclocks with this Q6600!

I really need a new mobo i think. This DS4 & Q6600 does 3.6GHZ with 1.35V (10hours of P95 stable) but it just wont do 3.8GHZ, even had the Vcore upto 1.6V, mch & fsb to 0.2 and it still reboots.
Mobo may be faulty though has i got a noise like a cricket coming from the cpu which gets louder the higher the clock/Vcore goes :rolleyes:

So, whats the best O/C board for these quads? money doesnt matter aslong as i can run my DDR2 in it :up:

i had booted it at 460 X 9 last nite with 1.50vcore but didnt run any test. that told me i could play at 425 X9 :) ill test more later.

What were your FSB / NB / SB / VCC voltage settings? I'm guessing you have a similar BIOS to my DS4L

I can get 3ghz on def voltage. But when i go for 3.2ghz and do around 1.4V i cannot get it stable. When i do the auto volt, then it sets to 1.37(5) and its stable. The mobo is GigaByte p35-ds3r. Do i need to add some other voltages other than CPU?

What FPO/Batch number is your chip? Mine's week 37 B batch and it's pretty crap, now @ 3.4Ghz @ 1.45v, not Orthos stable tho.

I figured I would post my ocs so far. I think I got one heck of a chip but I am limited by my mobo. Its an L738B024. I am using swiftech GTX extreme water block and my custom water box and rad which isnt all that great.

I have a L728A G0 Q6600 with vid 1.2875v and i'm really not impressed with it.


Prime stable @ 3.72ghz with a rather high vcore @ 1.52v. I was hoping more (or at least with less vcore) from a G0 Q6600 cooled by a dedicated wc'ing loop.


Although i can try as many Q6600's i want, i'm going to leave it @ that and wait for early 2008 when mainstream yorkfield arrives.

I just found out my new L737B got a VID of 1.2125, hopes it is a decent clocker, aiming for 425x9 for 24/7 with low volts "if possible lol :up:

I went to my local supplier and he has some L737B045 q6600, I was able to look at the waker codes as well, they all ended in the 200's.

I was hoping to find a low wafer ##, as I wanted to change up my current q6600, to one for lower Voltage , I am running 3789@ 1.56v, 24/7 stable. VID on mine is 3.125 which is high compared to what I see out there..

Question:
I searched for L737B045 and cant find anyone with one to see how they perform..

Do you think its worth trying one, (problem 15% restock if I take it back..)

That's how my quad core runs, just my cooling doesn't do the job right :(

on black strip on cpu pcb is two lines...number closest to pcb edge is serial number...and ergo must tie into wafer number.

However, I'll end this speculation about wafer number right here...there CANNOT be a single wafer number...there are two seperate cores on quad pcb! There is no guarantee that each quad will get wafer from same large slice!!!!

Maybe if you have Intel's "secret decoder ring" that number will tell you which slice, and which wafers from which slice...

not sure if its last 3 or 2 numbers to be as close to 000 as possible, but thought i would take a look for the q6600, but found low to mid 200's.

I am in two minds whether to go for the L737B045 but without some others with good results from this batch I am unsure..

As i just posted, 3 numbers cannot tell you where die came from...it could tell you maybe ONE die's location on wafer, but not TWO!!! If you have info that says otherwise, please share..I'm sure others here would appreciate it!

I have L737B486...1.325VID...does 3.8ghz @ 1.6v. There is a thread here somewheres that mentions 1.325 VID quads will not do 3.6ghz...mine does more, so even VID won't really tell you that much about cpu.

As far as I am concerned, lower numbers in L737 code have proven more overclockable, and I surmise that this is because L737 is number for a binning process.

So, L737A's are binned first. First start in that session of binning is L737A001. Each group of cpu's that passes that bin test gets that number, and then another batch is started...L737A002. binning is done based on heat, and used VID, I surmise.

L727A001 would be the 0.85v VID cpu's that we do not see in retail. L737A002 might be 0.8525v...but then again, it might just be a second batch from same testing run. I just know that I have never seen L***x*0* cpus...

Once the cpu's have been "binned", the ones that failed might get sent to L737B...I do not know what makes L737A different from L737B...nor do I understand what makes L737A001 different from L737A002....this is just a possibility.

As far as serial number, that tidbit comes from Intel documents, so for sure that number is serial number. As such, it would tell Intel what that cpu is "under those clothes", but it won't tell you directly where on wafer cpu came from. There jsut aren't enough numbers there to give such info, for two cores, and which wafer it came from.

I think you might be onto something, I do have a L737B6xx, and it can't clock for crap, or I'm doing it wrong. 3.4Ghz barely stable at 1.4625v, It just won't clock very well at all, VID 1.325

Oke my L737B I popped in yesterday is doing pretty good, I did run 1.272@ 3.6ghz for 2 and half hour then 1 core got a round error, so I upped a notch to 1.280 it errored after 4 hours. Then I upped up to 1.288 now still running for almost 10 hours small ffts :up:

temps are Okish, for unlapped Cooler and cpu. 50-52c. So I got some headroom, for more.

First day result so far.

Got a 737A doing 8x450 (3.6) @ 1.40 Under load dam Vdroop:mad:

I going water here soon the IHS seems to be convex I though peeps was seeing concave???
