the inquirer is now reporting that the x1800xt will run at 625 mhz core and 1500 mhz memory as standard, with further room for overclocking. Which will probably mean we see 650/1600 stock on some high end cards.

Let's say that's enough to beat a 7800GTX (430/1200) stock, will it still be enough to beat it at say 490/1300 (XFX stock)?
a gtx core at 490 is overclocked 14%, if the x1800xt does the same it'll be at 712mhz, and with the inquirer previously reporting that the r520 would run at 700mhz+ it is possible we'll see these cards. Obviously until the card is avaliable, this is pure speculation, but the 625 core speed is designed to match or just edge out a stock gtx, going for a higher default would reduce yields, but much like bfg, xfx etc have released speed binned cards at higher speeds, It's possible we'll see it again with the x1800. x1800xt gold edition anyone? (leaving platinum edition free for an ati nonclemature)

The only point I agreed with is whether it ends up faster or slower, the 7800 is an excellent card for the forseeable future. Buy what you need today, otherwise you will always be waiting for the next big thing.
given that these numbers are correct(or at least close), I'm certain Ati has it figured out to where they will beat a stock GTX. However I really can't see it beating one of the XFX or EVGA 490/1300 cards.
We really havent seen any ATi AIB partners speed binning high end cards recently, but I bet that might change for this generation.

Ty afterclock...I'll see if we need an official R520 launch thread once it hits. THe inq said the XL wouldn't have overclocking headroom, not the XT.
Also, the 7800GTX was 599 at most places too the day it was released, so its unreasonable to think places wont price gouge in the beginning...the market will settle down gradually as it did with the 7800GTX...that should be expected.

7800GTX prices have not really fallen since emergence here, mind you it's still an arm and a leg for an x850xtpe too(only about 40 less than GTX), nevermind there's 6800U's all over the place still topping rleese prices, and 7800GTX current pricing!.
Anyway, by the counter...OCT 5th is the day...I wonder if i'll be able to go and buy one that day...

I had heard the plan was to get crossfire out the door first though, so they do not shoot themselves in the foot with x850 master card sales. But since they are ready to go with the new mid and low range vid, maybe they have had to change that, and will launh r520 at the end of that countdown. I don't imagine there would be cards available immediately for top end.

eh, this may well be an issue of some very close timing. Sander received his benchmarks on the 16th(per his rebuttal timeline) and posted his initial article the same day.
The Hexus pics and article were published the 20th. Now obviously the AIBs have to get these boards sometime very soon, and IMO its entirely possible that no one idd have them on the 16th, but did get them sometime between the 16th and the 20th.
A lot can happen in 4 days, epsecially considering the launch is just over 2 weeks away. I'd imagine things are happening very quickly between ATi and its partners right about now.

The countdown at ati.com is CONFIRMED as the x1800, just set your cpu clock to anytime after the countdown would end and look at the picture where the countdown was!
when I clicked forward I got a message talking about an X1K.
That would translate into an X1000. Lord, I don't even want to speculate about a possible new name....
