Having artefacts etc. at low clock frequency (~700 MHz) is quite unusual. Could you answer following questions, so I can more easily analyze the problem:

- What is a 'BS-frequency' now i.e. card gives BS easily e.g. with 3dmark03/Skialpine ?
- How about before mod ?
- What drivers you have (give a try for re-install) ?
- Did you have similar artefacts before ?
- Did you checked what memories you have 2.2, 2.8 ns ... ?
- Can you seen ANY significant 'injuries' somewhere in your card, missing/burn components etc. ?
- Have you ever test 'ATITool' for artefact testing, what is result now ?

I do not believe changing ceramics would have any significant effect: the artefacts are totally different problem than BS.

far cry , just now I can heard the stranger sound same times but I have a solution, at least to me,
If you have installed windows xp64 with 77,72 nvidia drivers the stranger sounds reduce at least 80 ~90% if you try the same on windows xp with 77.72 nvidia drivers the sound is really high.

My next challenger is the vmod, I was try this vmod but I haven´t any improvement

OK.. to summarize your experiments (correct ?)

1. BS-card (without any artefacts ???)
2. 'As standard cap mod', did not remove BS
3. Capacitors replaced with Chemi-con's capacitors
- BS removed !!
- Still some artefacts
4. Playing with drivers
- Noisy audio differs considerably with drivers at least with xp64 (?)
- Still some artefacts (???)

How high voltage you had for memories with that mod ? If you had VERY high voltage even very short time, it might explain the artefacts you reported earlier.

When making Vmem mod, please also take look this method as reported in document (LITTLE bit easier way..).

Are there any news about freezing- pauses 3-5sec in 3d heavy situation.I have 3 different 6800 cards(Gainward, Galaxy and Asus).Galaxy overclocked nicely for first month(370 core) but now from 325 to 330mhz core gives me pauses in 3d.Same effect with gainward 6800 which i got second hand.Asus does 430 core without problems and is the only pci-e card of the three.My friends 6800gt agp also pauses in 3d.In some site was told that stutter problem is only with bad clocking (not more 370 overclocking core) cards.I have never seen BS with 6800 cards but sound issue is wih all my cards.Intresting do 9800 cards have similar problems.

I replaced both capasitors on Gainward 6800 and added third 1500x6,3v and absolutely nothing changed.

OK.. Few comments. I have heard (seen) in MANY forums people complaining freezes with almost any kind of 6800-cards (le/ultra/gt). Many explanation have been given to help Fastwrite/memory etc. settings in bios, different drivers, chipset have effect (some MB-chipsets do not many freezes??). To be honest I do know a workaround-fits-for-all, does anybody ? Anyway, this issue is not related to BS any means AFAIK. There was several posts in this thread (several pages ago :) ), where users(s) test capacitor mod to prevent freezing, but I did not get (for sure) whether it helped too much.

The capacitor change of GW-card is interesting issue :). Could you post following details (all related to that GW-card):

- How old card
- Did you have BS when OC:ing memory ? How about after 'cap mod'
- What capacitor codes you have (had) e.g. "4 3 470 6E"
- What replacement capacitor you used e.g "Sanyo SVP 470 uF, 6.3 V"

I have also heard "Noisy audio" with Radeon's. Maybe that model has same kind of problems with swithing regulator as 6800le-cards (=current consumption varies with time, and cause noise to audio lines). Do you www-page having figure of that card, I'll want to take look it more carefully :)

Good news- i added 560mkf capasitor to missing place on Gainward 6800 core volt and did volt mod with 2k resistor and now no freezing until 370mhz core(was 330mhz).Intresting i measure only about 0,1v incririese in vcore during heavy 3d.Now i will put 1,5k and look whats happening.The card is 02.2004 as i remember.Capasitors what i replaced early were 44 470 6E and no bs was ever recordid with them.Maybe bad core is causing pauses and bad mem volt bs?I cant see my Galaxy capasitors because of AC cooler.Asus pcie perfect card 430/800 has different layout and no green stuff.

I checked out and galaxy 6800 is having 1200x6,3v capasitors as is Asus and they are not green.I used brand name dead motherboards capasitors of varios makers (tested first).

You added a exactly the same kind of 'purple SVP' capacitor next to original '560 uF purple capacitor' ? This (these) capacitors powers memory regulator so those should not (?) have effect on Vcore. But maybe 'cleaner' memory voltage allows better core operation..

The OC-capability of these cards is usually limited by BS i.e. propably the first problem when testing limits is BS and not artefacts etc.

The reason I am interesting about replacement capacitors: Th most of the capacitors ARE WORSE that original green CV-EX. In fact CV-EX are not bad at all, the problem is that here are required THE BEST YOU CAN FOUND. The examples of proper replacement capacitors are listed in chapter 'Ultimate capacitor modification' and the most critical issues are ripple-current value and ESR.

You can make a simple test how good capacitors you have. Measure temperature (e.g. CAREFULLY with a finger tip) at top of these capacitors. A hot value (>50 C) means capacitors are running at too high (ripple) current level and the life time can be (very) short.

I did this finger measurement yesterday and they are all equal.Must be volt mod then what saved me from pauses.In theory the very low quality capasitors may be cold in operation because of their losses and high resistances(ineffectivness).Now my core is 385 and no problems yet.Are you absolutely shure that 12v is only memory source from molex?Mostly 12v(~220w max) has more power than 5v(~150w max).I must say that memory artifacts are visible exactly at 750mhz as it was before capasitors replacement.

Temperature is equal, but how high ? Warm/hot.. ? Do you think you have low quality capacitors, can you describe what they look like (codes/marking color etc.) ? I think if you (or somebody) put very low quality capacitors instead original ones, the card is not working at all. The current consumption of memories varies very rapidly (several amperes, say during a few clock pulses) and low quality capacitors can not supply that current due to ESR (U = R*I ;) ). As a result of ESR memory voltage drops after rapid current increase and something happens: BS, artefacts etc. For the same reason temperature of low quality capacitors (when used in this purpose) increase, since ESR is in reality 'a resistor inside capacitor' and power is consumed (=heats capacitor) P=I^2*ESR !!!

I heard a story from user that could REMOVE/minimize freezing with capacitor added to TP10-TP9. The point was that capacitor IS VERY GOOD: 3300 uF, 6.3 V low-ESR for motherboard purposes (I know the exact model, since I bought that capacitor myself ;) )

my card works fine at 400-950 16x6 almost three weeks under heavy load in another gaming PC without any blackscreens =) cap config still same C1=100nF, C2=C3=10nF, C136 C143 - are EPCOS Low-ESR tantalum caps (197A series, i'm sure now).

now i've got another card. it's Leadtek 6800NU. it's dead (damaged) now, but it wasn't BS-affected before. I'll solder out C1,C2,C3 soon and measure again =)
C136 C143 are 4 6 470 6e.

Nice to heard, very good mod indeed :) I suggest to measure (e.g. carefully with a finger tip) the temperature of EPCOS's : if those are running cool (less than ~50 C) no problem, but having hot capacitors would indicate the ESR-value (=max ripple current) might be problem in long term..

Capacitor values of non-BS Leadtek are extremely interesting, thank you beforehand :toast: Since, only a few BS (any real BS?) has been reported with Leadtek, these values can be the most optimal... looking forward to get the values and put to simulator :D

BTW, is the card badly damaged/you know what is the problem ?

hi again, I made the enhanced capacitor mode to my MSI 6800LE a couple of week ago (2200 uF,6V) and the card was running OK at 700mhz memory and 390mhz core in every game (HL2,DOOM3,NFSU2..) but yesterday I played the F.E.A.R multiplayer demo and got a BS. Then I lowered the core Freq to 370 without modifying the memory clock and the game run without problems. The problem is that I tryed to play FEAR single player demo and I get BS asasp even at 370 mhz core. So it seems that working capacitor mode for "older games" doesn't work with FEAR... It's strange that lowering core freq remove BS in FEAR mpdemo but usually have no effect in other games?!
The other games still work fine(no BS)

oh I'm starting to get tired of this problem, I'm thinking to change the caps, but will changing the caps remove BS "forever"?

I pity the cap mod did not help too long :( Your tests indicate that FEAR-demo might be good for BS-testing (?)

The situation was exactly the same with MSI-card I modified for 'money2': similar capacitors, adding capacitor helped only limited time. In finish forum one user reported that he had replaced "4 3 470 6E" capacitors of MSI-card and measured capacitance values 430 and 10 uF (!!!!) These values mean the capacitors (or at least the one of 10 uF) were TOTALLY dead and it is evident any 'normal' modification will not help anymore - capacitors sould be changed.

I can not guarantee BS will be removed forever, the design of the card is so poor that anything could happen in long term. BUT results so far indicate that by changing capacitors BS will remove and stay away for a long time. How long ? I think it depends on how good capacitors you have, amount of PC usage, temperature inside computer etc.

Hi. Few months ago I bought a MSI 6800LE. Unfortunately it was BS affected. I added (didn't solder it, just hot-glued) suitable capacitor between TP10 an TP9 but it didn't help for long. In few weeks, it even worsened the problem. I had to underclock my cards memory because BS happened even in 2D. My card looks exatly the same as the one in this picture:

Thank you very much for detailed info :) Never heard MSI-card with those capacitors, but as you have found it is definately 'a BS very soon model'. Some other manufacturers have used "4 6 470 6E" capacitors (like Leadtek) and BS has not been appeared usually so fast (never?). The difference must be related to the feedback component values, that has been considered frequently in the last posts.

It is pity the mod did not help too much :( I think that 'modification not working with MSI-cards' seems to be quite common (again due to those feedback components). Replacing the capacitors DID help with 'totally BS' MSI-card by 'money2' (=seen with my own eyes) and the same kind of results have been reported by other users. Of cource I cannot guarantee anything, but I am 99 % sure BS will be removed by doing as follows (see details in document):

- Be carefull, avoid ESD, do not heat components/PCB too much !!!!
- Use GOOD capacitors

I took a brief look at Jamicon's www-page. The best replacement capacitors (surface mount) I found were CF-series:

I decided to search for high quality japanese caps. Tommorow im going to ask in electric stores for these. I hope, sellers have acces to the right source. If not, I'll to go for internet shopping.
IMO, I don't need to buy surface mounted capacitors (I think it can be more difficult to find them), just "normal" caps. I know it'll look weird when soldered to graphics board but who cares. ;)

Could you tell me, which capacitors are good for replacement?

regarding MSI nx6800le
buyed an msi nx6800le on ebay, it was BS affected ( 60 euro :) ), the first time it was arrived, i tested the card and it seems to go OK with 3dmark2003 ( 8000 point ). Then i extract the vga to resolve BS, connected a 3300 6.3 V on point tp9 and tp10. But when i power on my PC, the card show terrible artifact on video, also in safety mode . Tryed all the measure on VGA. It seems to all OK, CPU 1,1 mem 2,71. I think i've performed all the tests (bios,mods,ecc.. :mad: ). Now i have trasformed the VGA into a 6800 (changing resistor as i saw on other forum, flashed bios with a 6800, but nothing to do, always artifacts on screen. P.S. C136 and 143 are 4 6 470 6E .
Please tell me something if you know.

Sanyo SVP:s are all good, in this purpose few details are critical:

- Voltage rating >= 4 V
- Capacitance value >= 470 uF (maybe working also with lower value)
- Some of those (like 4SVP1200) are higher (taller) and not suited very well with NV5 Silencer (only a tiny air space left between caps and NV5)

.. so most of those are just perfect, like those you listed. Leakage current between (these) capacitors differs due to different capacitance and voltage ratings. Leakage is not 'big deal', since ripple current levels are some DECADES higher.

- Adding a capacitor made things even worse e.g. artefacts appeared WITHOUT opening any locked units ?
- Removing capacitor removed artefacts ???
- Transforming 6800le -> 6800 means having different bios or opening pipes with RivaTuner ?

Some explanations. Having artefacts is usually related to opening faulty/semi-faulty locked units. Having artefacts WITHOUT opening any locked units AT STOCK frequencies is not very common and might indicate something has break down. Are you sure the capacitor polarity was correct ? What kind of capacitor used ? Is it possible the card got some kind of 'ESD-shock' ?

i transform 6800le to 6800 chancing bios and resistor configuration on VGA ( KEEP INFORMATION ON INTERNET ) bios is a msi 6800.
at restart pc recognize vga as 6800 than chance bios was correct.
i thin my card dead!!!!

i transform 6800le to 6800 chancing bios and resistor configuration on VGA ( KEEP INFORMATION ON INTERNET ) bios is a msi 6800.
at restart pc recognize vga as 6800 than chance bios was correct.
i thin my card dead!!!!

Sorry I did not read your first post carefully: missed the word resistor.. I saw once a www-page about that mod, changing 6800le card into 'ultra' by modifying small SMD resistors (=used by card to identify core configuration selected by nvidia). You performed that mod ? Do you remember the link for that www-page ?

If you have this resistor mod I suppose you ARE unclocking locked pipes (?). Please check with Rivatuner how many units you have open. In the case having bad units open (more than 8x1,4) a good idea would be removing mod and trying to unlock those with RivaTuner one-by-one (pipes/vertex-units).

The capacitor you used should be fine for the BS-mod, so it can not explain artefacts (when properly installed/uninstalled).

i perform the mod and i think is allright, the vga card is identified on rivatuner as a 6800 :banana: but the problem is that i have orrible artifact,with and without mod .. :confused: :confused: :confused: i tryed this mod to verify if resolv my problem.
however mod is very simple ( if you have enought confidence with soldering ). I'm a technician on TLC for me was quite enought simple
I think you can try, if you are one of lucky man that have a 6800le with unlocked and free of artifact pipes :clap: try it. Note that i use an old nvflash instead the new... i encountered problem to flash the bios with new nvflash, i had used ver 4.76
i never tryed rivatuner for unlock pipes. only for test my vga...
about capacitor polarity, i don't think i'd made a mistake... may be but i'm sure that it was correct.

OK.. but you did NOT have artefacts as when 'new' i.e. BEFORE resistor mod?

If RT says (even without mod) your card is 6800 there has to be some reason for that. Could you check out with RT what pipes/vertex you have open ? BIOS can not force pipe/vertex configuration (AFAIK). You can also try unlock those extra (?) pipes with RT to see whether artefacts will be removed.

Another option.. if there is a minimal unwanted short/open in that resistor array i.e. your card is still 'modded'.

It would be nice challenge to solder those SMD's (engineering point of view), but I prefer RT since it soooo easy without major risks ;)

A very interesting case related to MSI 6800le-card happened in Finland !

A reseller started to sell 'a special lot' of MSI 6800le-cards at very chep price some weeks ago. Afterwards users were complaining (in finnish forum) about BS problems with those cards. It is likely that the most of those cards were BS-affected as a new i.e. similar to the very first MSI cards. The capacitor codes etc. markings indicates that those ARE in fact very old cards. People RMA'd the cards (somebody even two times !!!) and got similar cards back for some weeks.

However, about one week ago users received cards, which are COMPLETELY NEW model/version. Here are some fotos of the new card model/version (Credits to 'TuskaMies' :up: ) :

.. so MSI has FINALLY learned how to make this card working: 'green' CV-EX-capacitors have been replaced with 'purple' SVP-capacitors :D When looking carefully the soldering of those capacitors one can see that those have been changed afterwards i.e. also MSI (like GW) is modifying 'broken' (RMA'd ?) cards (difference in soldering between '1200' and '1500' capacitors)
