Greetings all, it has been a while since I have been here.
I just fired up a new build using a Rampage II Extreme. I will be reading all through this thred over the next day.
In addition to the R-II I have an i7 920, 6 Gb Corsair Dominator GT, a GTX 285 and a pair of V-Raptors in RAID-0 powered by a Corsair HX100W.
It booted fine on the first popwer up and I have now flashed to BIOS 1104.
My initial CPU operating temp is 43 C.
Much to learn but it looks like this is the place.
ah finally somebody to compare
can u run in xmp profile for the i7 920 for the gt's??
just see whether it can pass memtest86+
Man, I want those sticks :p I can't get them anywhere though, nobody stocks them here. Not planning to order from US as it costs way to much. I would pay $100 in duty alone if not more.
I'm guessing though you had trouble with them because your board would not do high Uncore properly. I doubt I'd have trouble with them since I can do Uncore up to 4.4GHz comfortably so far in triple channel though I've said that before about this board :p:
hi does the Coolermaster Real Power 1000w Modular Power Supply work with this mobo thx for your time ;)
Hi :)
I've a problem, tonight i tried Galaxy 1000 - R2E - Corsair 1600C8 - 4870 512.
On boot VGA fan @ 100% and 3 red led on.
I tried with 2 4870, 8600gt and single ram on 2-4-6 slot.
The LCD poster just says welcome and then begins counting.
Incompatibility with the Galaxy?
Any idea?
Thx :)
Hi, which the best Bios for Rampage II Extreme x58 ????
YES I had the same problem! DROVE ME NUTZ! no matter what i tried couldent get it to fire up... went to Best buy and bought (and later returned) an antec 550w and it fired up immediatly. Just ordered the Corsair HX 1000 Which seems to be popular and works with the R2E.
which is the limit of overclock of i7 920 batch 3835Axxx?
What are slots 2-4-6? Are you using your memory in A1, B1, and C1 (blue slots)?
Alternatively, it could be your power supply. Did you plug in the 8-pin 12V power cable into the motherboard header and are you using the correct cable since some people have unknowingly forced their 8-pin PCIE connector into the motherboard?
If you have done all of this then maybe borrow one from a friend and try it would before buying a new one. The board seems to be finicky with the PSUs it likes. It's definitely an annoyance.
I had that batch number for the i7 940. The chip ran fairly cool but it did not overclock well relative to other i7s. I managed to get 4.2GHz but voltages needed to be around 1.45V. One thing I can say for sure is that the IMC on my chip was sub-par.
which the limit of voltage for CPU Voltage/QPI Voltage and CPU PLL 24/7 ???
I do not know what he happens here, that I obtain to stabilize with 21 x 192 1.40v, but in 20 x 200 I do not obtain to stabilize. What it can be this?
Will it do 18 or 19 x 200? Figure out your max bclk with low multi first and then up the multi.
Well, I did not post a screenshot but I did do that test. I did not arbitrarily declare it stable :D I tested Uncore up to 4211MHz using Memtest86+ 2.11 and Memtest HCI for a few hours. It went fine. Maybe if I redo the test on higher Uncore (4.3GHz+) I will post the screens then. I was definitely stable.
In terms of the memory, I do remember now what you told me in a PM. My bad. I remember that the board would run them but not in CL7. That still baffles me. But we all know that this board is far from perfect :p:
I've been messing since day one with 12Gb memory & I loose 2-4Gb if:
12Gb Ram gets clocked over 1800 (it's getting better with every new BIOS)
Set timings too low
Set vQPI to low
Set Uncore too high
Change DRAM CHA Ref Voltages
or 6Gb
set at 2300 with timings 8-7-6 will loose 2Gb if vQPI too low & same things as above.
I have also found that occassionaly the BIOS upon reboot will change automatically the DRAM REF VOLTAGE list from AUTO to 0.0 values or other values thus loosing a channel, if I set them back to AUTO everything is back to normal.
I also think it's a mix of board & mostly CPU IMC related.

allready posted !
Now - you are too late ! :D
both links for the 1204 bios are valid..but i tink they are corrupt...winrar gives me a error message saying that the file is corrupt when i try to extract it...someone might want to notify asus..
No problem extracting it for me either...thanks for sharing!
1204 is working good for me so far. The only visual change I see is that you can now select the 21 multiplier (for the 920 anyways) full time regardless if Turbo is enabled or not.
Boy, their file dates on their FTP site sure are screwed up..."last modified 5/21/48" LOL.
Every day when I start the computer for the first time I got no picture!? Then I have to turn off on power button and then turn on again...enter bios with F1 and save and restart. That happend every day now since two weeks back......any idea to solve it?
somebody can cite which the parameters for i7 920 in 4.2GHZ?
thanks...
Sounds like cold boot issue to me. Some people managed to solve this by changing the power supply so you may want to try a different PSU. Also, you can try different DRAM in case that it is it causing your problems.
Try 200MHz BCLK with 20x multiplier and turbo on. Start with 1.42500V for the CPU and then lower it from there. Also, set your QPI/DRAM to 1.35000V and your DRAM to 1.65681V. Uncore should be twice your DRAM speed and QPI should be below 8000MT/s.
If you want to be absolutely safe read my guide below and set your Uncore to be I think in a 8:9 ratio to QPI speed.
thanks!
I obtained to stabilize in 4.0 (21 x 191) 1.40v. But in (20 x 200) he does not stabilize, you knows because?
in (18 x 200 and 19 x 200) it was stabilized…
in (20 x 200) does not stabilize!
Because?
hmm, can't update bios :|
downloaded the new bios, extracted and put in the USB.
then entered the ASUSTek EZ Flash 2 in BIOS.
if i enter the .ROM file, both ways, the 1204 and 1104 sayus that "Boot block in file is not valid!"
Updated my contest thread with some pics finally :D Shows my nice chilled water setup, and roughly how it was built from start to finish. Head over and reply! I welcome all comments :)

Don't be shy ;)
Not likely. You are already running 1104 and the latest cold boot fixes were released in 0805 IIRC. Try a different PSU, seriously. Also, try running one stick of DRAM at a time or booting with all three but with lower clocks. I did not ask you originally, but does this only happen when the computer is off for a longer period of time, like overnight? Oh and check your PM please :)
hi.
I've just try this mod u can see in the screen.
What you think about it ?
Do you have any advice please to improve it and make a good OC but stable ?
I'm looking for Performance AND Quality
Thanks.

Greetings everyone,
Some simple questions for you, please bear with my noob status with this Mobo and BIOS.
I have just completed the rig and started to learn this BIOS (1204). I have a temp question. In the BIOS with no OC my CPU temp reads 43 C, when doing a slight OC to 2.92 my temp in the BIOS reads 47 C, at 3.2 Ghz the temp in the BIOS reads 60 C. With the same OC CoreTemp shows 59 C yet the ASUS PC probe shows 45 C which is more like it.
I am using a Zalman 9900. I am thinking of removing it, cleaning and reinstalling it. Do these temps sound high to you and why the difference between the BIOS readings and the PC probe readings?
My PSU is a Corsair HX1000W and memory is Dominator GT 1866C7, 7-8-7-20.Please, any comments or suggestions based on what you see?
Thanks.

Easiest thing to do would be to go for 3.8GHz. Set the settings as following...
BCLK 200MHz
Multiplier 19x
DRAM 1600MHz (8x multiplier)
CPU Voltage 1.3V to start (lower as needed)
QPI/DRAM Voltage 1.35000V
DRAM Voltage 1.65681V
UCLK Frequency 2xDRAM or a bit higher
QPI Link Speed 7200MT/s (3.6GHz) or around there...
This is manageable on air and will give you good performance and a stable system.
See the settings posted above to boost your OC a bit. I think the temps could be lower so do remount your cooler and do not use too much TIM. Also, make sure that your case airflow is good. I would trust RealTemp 3.00 to tell me the temperature and not Asus Probe. Asus Probe is usually wrong.
uhh, i7 920 with multiplier 22x?
How?

arghh..i cant seem to extract the bios at all..winrar keeps giving me a unexpected end of archive error...maybe i am having network problems with asus servers...
btw why is it that i cannt find the link to the new bios on asus download page? isit still in beta? can someone please upload it to an external server for me please?
thanks
OK, so I removed the Zalman 9900. The AS looked even on both surfaces with no missed spots. I cleaned it off and did the straight edge trick , neither of the two surfaces are totally flat but not off by more than about .001".
I cleaned and conditioned the two surfaces and this time I used the supplied Zalman thermal comound and re seated the cooler.I noticed that the Artic Silver I was using was AS3, not 5, it is an old tube. Anyway, my Temps are better but still nowhere as good as I would expect. I am down on average 10 C. from what I posted earlier. Both Real Temp and Core Temp agree and read the same. 50 53 48 52 so it is much better but not great, especially for 3.2 Ghz. Do you think liquid cool would make that much difference with no load? One other thing is that I am running with an open case right now so my air flow may not be optimum although I do have the front and rear case fans running at full.
Has anyone encounter this before? :(
For 197 x 21 i need only 1.275v for QPI-DRAM Voltage to run stable in P95.
For 200 x 21 i need at least 1.5v for QPI-DRAM Voltage to run stable in P95.
Is this normal or there is something wrong. Other settings are left the same.
200Bclock is trickier. Plus an even multi need more volts to stabilise, hence why many users go for the odd multies. I will look into ya thing next week when I'm back at home... which rams at what speed ?
I using Corsair 1600 CL8.
CPU voltage from BCLK 197 to 200 i need 1.36 from 1.33.
for 21x200 any voltage i use under 1.5v for QPI-DRAM will instantly hang for Prime95, Everest stress.
But i another wierd issue i realise is i can use 1.3v QPI-DRAM for 21x200 to run everest CPU stress test only (Uncheck all FPU, MEMORY and CACHE stress test)
ok, i tested my first build ever last night, and with sad results, i started up the rampage II E, and all the lights and bling bling of the board amazed me, sadly moments later i noticed i was not getting any signal to my screen, the lcd poster keeps sticking at the VGA text, then says LOCKED, and repeats that.
could anyone give me a clue?

There are those that know far more than I do on this MOBO but I have had similar issues with new startups with the X-Fi installed. I suggest, remove it for now, check all your cables and then try again.
Sounds like you have a weak Cache/IMC on your chip. What batch is the chip?
Do you have another video card? Also, try removing all non-essential hardware and just put one stick of DRAM in A1. Then, if the system boots, slowly add components until you see it hang again.
Hey guys
Those tips seem to be really good
I've to manage precisly this OC on Vcore.
I've taken a new screenshot and doing like this :

I've upped 1204 BIOS to my Rapid account for those that are having problems with ASUS servers. File is as is, and not zipped. :)

and no this is not a mistake this is ACTUAL
HDTUNE shows the exact same results....
and yes this is with the R2E on board intel raid...
and yes the bus can handle it if you have the right drives.... the intel raid is attached via PCI-EX (lanes) and has 3gb per sata connector... take a look at the Intel ICH10R white papers and charts.
Hi All
BIOS 1204 works great, but my Logitech G11 Keyboard works only inside Windows. Cannot edit Bios settings, luckily I have still another PS2 Keyboard.
USB Legacy Support Enabled or Auto does make any different.
Any advice?
Thanks and greetings
Patrick
I need some advice re: Uncore. I am trying to go for the memory OC record on the R2E but even though I can get my hands on some nice DRAM with Samsung ICs that should be able to hit as high as 2300MHz or very close to I cannot seem to get Uncore higher than about 4.4GHz. My QPI/DRAM voltage does not want to go higher than 1.6V even if I set it higher (I tried up to 1.65V but it always reads out 1.60V). I also increased the DRAM voltage to 1.9V, and IOH/ICH to 1.41V each to no effect. Looks like the board won't run higher Uncore which basically seals my fate in terms of the memory competition :(
Any advice? I posted the same question in the competition thread here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=220984 so please head over there and reply. At least that way I get more replies since it is looking unlikely I'll be able to take the memory prize...
If you really do not want to reply in my competition thread, then do reply here because I am genuinely looking for advice.
Care to share what drives you are using for your magical results??? BTW Intel whitepapers show 3Gb/s each not GB/s, which is roughly 380 MB/s max. Also the entire ICH10R has a maximum bandwidth of 2GB/s. This includes all of your usb connections, lan, etc. How then could it burst to 2+GB/s?
hmm thats not suprising
thought i posted a 4k or 8k .. before
its using intel write back on the matrix driver.
That's quite dangerous DL'ing a BIOS file naked...the zip file provides a protection against corruption since it has its own checksums built in. If you are having trouble DL'ing the file from ASUS, PM me and I'll email the zip to you. If you use a naked BIOS file and it's corrupted, your screwed (well I guess you got the backup bios, but still). Be careful.
dejanh, I don't think increasing the QPI/DRAM past 1.6 will help much with your uncore OC'ing. Sorry. :( I guess for raw GHz you don't HAVE to have the Uncore at 2x, right?
Can anyone tell me the best option to control case fans (connected to the Asus RampageII) since the Asus tool does not work while overclocking the board?
Updated Front Page
i have try all USB Legacy Support Options :(
Other USB-Ports
Clear CMOS
But no USB-Keyboard... Back to Bios 1104 fix the Problem ;)
Yeah, I thought about this as well. However, this chip has been pretty good in terms of its cache and IMC so far so I am inclined to say that it is not the chip. I also posted some time ago that my IOH voltage is stuck and I determined that it basically stays at 1.21V until you bump the IOH over 1.35V. Only then does it actually read 1.31V which still has a hefty 0.04V droop from the set voltage. Maybe some circuitry issues on my particular board?
Fan controllers.
I have a Logitech Wave USB keyboard and I have no problems since I moved to 1204. I have all defaults set for USB support, including enabled Legacy USB. Maybe you should flash back to an older BIOS then reset all the settings to defaults, reboot, then flash to 1204, reboot, set all defaults, then set up your Oc settings and go from there...
@Dejanh: Does Asus Fan Xpert work with the Aus Rampage II?
Is there any software that lets you contorll the fans that are connected to the Asus Rampage II?
im got my I7 920 up too 4.1ghz. but at 1.50v stable. I am going to start working on getting the V down any hints? or is 1.5 ok with these cpu/mobo's?
According to this reference-list the I7 920 can take 1.55V !
Me personally concieve this value a bit high ... but I think the main prob will be to cool this down in 24/7 use.
could anyone help me get any higher? i have only up'ed Vcore, and im not sure if i should up any others. im 100% up to speed on the I7 yet. learning ;)
any help would be great,
Hmmz just can't get my MEM higher or at least @ 1866MHz with my CPU @ 4GHz.
Then again I have to say that I don't use Turbo and had to disable Hyperthreading
to get it stable. Which makes my work with 4 cores instead of 8 :D
Can you tell me where you got the software from (Asus Fan Xpert)?
and another issue:
I am using Windows 7 beta with my rig. Unfortunately, I get a lot of error messages when installing the software for the sound card. Does anyone know a workaround for being able to get the sound console and everything work properly?
Thanks in advance :)
There is a version of Asus AI Suite on your CD that came with the motherboard. Just get it from there. Otherwise, you can download it from the Download section on http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us
I do not recomment using Windows 7 as the main OS. There are still a number of compatibility issues with that system.
By the way, can you go and drop a note (reply) in my competition thread over here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=220984? I would really appreciate it :D
I am also using Win 7 for my new rig. In order to get the ASUS utilities to load I had to use compatability mode (compatable to Vista). That worked. I am also now using the NVIDIA 8171 driver for Win 7 and it loaded and runs fine. There have been no graphics issues at all.
My only issue so far is mt Temps. With a Zalman 9900 and only OCing to 3.3 Ghza I am getting temps at or near 50 C on all cores. I have reset the cooler and in fact I have a new one comming in tomorrow just to see if perhaps there is an issue with this one. I know liquid cooling would be somewhat better but 50 C is no better than a stock cooler.
Thanks but yes, I removed the shroud. I have a second 9900 comming in today just in case the sink is not flat enough or the heatpipes leak. If that does not work I am considering laping my 920 and/or going liquid cool. I do not intend to run 24/7 much more than 3.6 Ghz so I am hoping a good air cooler will do it but 50 C is just too high with almost no load.
Did you consider that you may just have a hot chip? The first i7 940 that I got would run at 95C on air at 3.6GHz when loaded on all 4 cores and 8 threads. I got rid of that chip since but it was definitely the chip. No amount of different cooling or whatever would reduce its temps really. The next chip I got was peaking out at 70C under the same cooling. Maybe the core to IHS solder was no good on the first chip, not sure...
I just want to encourage everyone here to go take a look at my competion thread again :) You can find it here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=220984
I need your replies, as many as possible. Just come in, say hi, ask a question, any question. If you want help from me, ask it there :D
Just wondering do you have any info for the reason of this? I noticed the same on my 965XE. For instance 138 x 30 wouldn't go much of anywhere at 1.42vcore. Yet, 135 x 31 would run fine at the same voltage.
I've ran several combinations of even numbered multipliers and the chip really doesn't seem to like it without a voltage bump.
