this problems should be fixed in driver update i bet
you can contact ati @ http://support.ati.com
or just get a proper fan like Zalman VF900-Cu that lowers noise and temp like 70% :p
The next wave of cards will probably have a newer bios, and manufacturers will release new bios eventually anyway. And for all we know, there may be a driver fix to the issue as well, but then you might have to *gasp* update your drivers.
I flash bioses on all my other hardware all the time, I don't see why it would be some big issue for a graphics card. No hardware is perfect, especially at launch, I expect that there will be new bioses for the GTX2x0 series also. 40W is a big deal in some instances, but it is a simple enough fix for those competent enough - and for those that aren't, it will be fixed if you just wait a bit and get a later card.
After reading about all the 4870 problems, I feel alot better about going with Nvidia. I have had zero problems with GTX280 and both cards clock to 700mhz easily. 21,000+ Vantage score is fun too.
I want to like ATI but until they get the problems solved I will stay away from Xfire.

$300 is not cheap if the card breaks and cannot overlock at all. guess you get what you pay for.
You will stay away from CF and you do want to use SLI? I don't see the reasoning as they both have the same problems and scaling related issues....
BTW, I have not ever heard of a single product that did not even have a single problem....
EDIT:
@Hornet331: maybe you should make this to save some energy :p::

*just kidding*
Who said you can't overclock at all? It's only because CCC doesn't allow higher OC's than 790MHz. It will, and has already been smashed.
And about the "problems" 4000's have; a lot of people here bought 4850's and 4870's; and only a few guys bought GTX 280's, guess why; because of its price and its, to me, lackluster performance.
So it's normal that there are problems being reported for 4000's, but not for GTX 280's.
And SLI is as much problematic as CF, don't worry. As long as both use the f'king AFR mode (without delays) they're all going to have microstutter, and they're all going to suck whatever you do.
is anyone else tried watching blue ray dvds with the new card?? i have a 4870 and it locks up my computer everytime i try to watch a movie?? im using cyberlinks program to watch them as well?? anyone had this problem or tried this in the past?
Stop smoking whatever ur smoking cos it's bad for you m8 ;) How about 920MHz core clock (now already 950MHz)? I bet those two (1st and 3rd place) GTX280 owners that paid more than 3x as much feel pretty lame right now :P

heh its funny to see you guys get so defensive, especially after talking so much trash about gtx280.
more great new results are coming in:
lol at all 4 dying.Quote:
Any new information?
Got 4 dead here, as well.
To fuel the fire and speculation, both sets we have died in Crossfire mode. (may be a trend from the looks of it)

and more new results:

Well aint this just great... I'm loosing any hope these cards will run again since I can see now some of you have dead cards even without flashing the BIOS... very bad neews indeed... looks like it'll be RMA time for me monday morning...

Congratulations, so 4 die but the guy doesn't state if he used BIOS changes or not (and yet he sees the card in ATIFlash.. what's he doing with the program?) and yet you quote ONE person that died without flashing the BIOS. Congrats on spending the time though to go to other threads to spread how you don't think its ever worked and never will!
Sounds like you're here just to solely thread crap:rolleyes: (and that goes for anyone going around to threads trying to talk crap on any side)
meh my 4780 being ordered for me next month , and i dont care what any Nv fanboy says...
If you look around here and on other forums there are a very large number of people whose cards are dying within 48 hours of purchase. On this forum alone there are easily 15+ dead cards already, and if you vist some other hardware forums you will see reports of this being widespread. It looks like AMD may have a major problem developing.
Anyways, as I've always said, buy what your heart and wallet desires. If you have the money to spend on the 280, go for it. If you only have enough for a 4870, then go for it. Its your own money, whether you spend it wisely is up to your own mind and what you expect out of the cards. What other people say shouldn't have bearing on whether you are going to be happy with your purchase (assuming it isn't completely stupid, like spending $100 on a 5 year old card) but if that even makes you happy, go for it.
And its almost time to leave for the airport woot . Vacation time (albeit with a computer for work )
At least 22 GTX280's confirmed failing due to heat according to the poll at Nvnews.
Over at [H] I've seen at least 2 people have theirs overheat and fail. Some 280's have a defect which causes them to go past 110 degrees and shut down, some of them die completely.
No company is immune to failures.
edit - the 4870X2 is going to be heat challenged as well
