I might be sending my chip in for RMA. The MB is randomly dropping two cores and blue screening now. I've been running on stock cooling until the WC parts arrive & am idleing at 36* having never pushed it yet past 3.8 for any length of time. I have a Rampage Extreme and called ASUS tech. They advised me to return the CPU. If that does not work then RMA the board.
The batch number is L822B363, Pack date 8/13/08 w/ 1.25V Max. Is this a chip I should keep or should I RMA the chip as ASUS suggests and take my chances on a new chip or get another board and see if that was the problem from the start. I have two days to make this decision to get an RMA with the Egg.
RMA the chip since that's the time pressured one.
Then you can start the process of elimination.
Unless you can find another board to borrow within two days to do the testing and find out the chip is ok.
PPL have been having BIG problems with that board & the quads it's the 16 phase power problems .. test the CPU now on another board & i'll bet it's fine
Just thrown my L822B363 in, Pack date 8/13/08, first boot with 1.25 in bios, 1.232v in CPU-Z. Vid 1.2375. Chip has potential, definately smokes the QX9650 i had.

Not too happy with my temps, i need to give my w/c a service.

cores 3 & 4 are like 9c higher than cores 1 & 2 when idle. 1&2 seem to catch up under load though.
That's probably the sensors if they catch up under load.
I have the same issue with my QX9650, but since they are the same or near the same under load I don't worry about it. At first I thought it might have been the IHS was warped, but I lapped it and I still have the same issue. Oh well, as long as it OC's high and it works I am not going to worry about it right now. I can pick up a Q9650 later on around Xmas if need be. Anyway, don't worry about it as long as there are no other issues. Otherwise RMA it.
Yep the Qxxxx cpu's have some quirky sensors.
From what I've seen, a lot of the 45nm chips (don't want to say all) have quirky sensors.
Update, 4.185Ghz with 1.264v

Unfortunately, this is my Asus maximus' limit on FSB, wont boot with 470 even when i drop the multi.
I know its these damn x38/x48 chipsets + quads. I cannot wait to get my p45 avenger :yepp:
MY 750i has hit 467 FSB for a clock of 42.05 Ghz on mine.. Stable.
Zlojack what do you mean, (Thats the Time Pressured one) and to RMA it. are you talking about the CPU.
I have that exact batch number. I thought all were different. Mine is L822B363 with VID of 1.2500 and I've hit 4.205 ghz with it and will try for more.
is that a bad batch zlojack?? Cuz I've not heard anything like that.
Mine had a stuck sensor & i let it idle for 12 hours & starting working JUST fine after the burn in ..... Now it screamms ..................
hi I have the evga 780i q9650 and flex 2 9200 running at default ATM but looking to overclock the cpu to 4 ghz can anyone help me with bios settings I also just got 2x gtx 260 which play crysis at 1080i on max setting min fps are 37 but got all these highend parts but running stock settings want my ram running at 1200mhz 5-5-5-14 which they can do with ease and CPU at 4 ghz + pls help thanks Davidoff
getting the CPU past 3.4 Ghz will make the SLI run better. as they need faster CPU..
you can very easily get to 4.0 Ghz on these chips.. even more so with the 780i. my 750i did it no problem. I'm sure your BIOS it a little different than mine. but start by disabling Intel Speed Step and C1E in CPU Features.
Then for the overclock. Start by getting Core Temp and telling us your VID. as that will help with letting us know what voltage to set.. Also at default voltage you should be able to hit 3.6 ghz or more. just punch in the number, save and exit.
Start with doing something like this. I'd set Ram to Manual and leave it at whatever the default stock speed is. clock that later after CPU is stable.
in BIOS do this.
set cpu voltage. aka vcore to 1.3v
set cpu fsb aka FSB/VTT to 1.3 also.
set VDIMM memory voltage to whatever mfg spec's call for. usually 2.1v
then I'd add a little to the NB as thats a big part of clocking Quads this high.
with those settings you should at least be able to hit 3.8 Ghz. at and 1.3v you might even be able to hit 4.0 ghz depending on what VID you have. Mine is 1.2500 and thats the highest you can get. I can't hit 4.0 Ghz stable with anything under 1.3312v but if your VID is like 1.2000 or so then 1.3 should hit 4.0 Ghz pretty easily.
Give that a try and get back to us!
will i need to do the pencil mod or any other mod im running water cooled cpu. i had a asus p5q dlx before which killed my 9800 gx2 but had no vdroop well maybe a tiny little bit but the 780i have quite a bit so i have heard. if the mod is need can somone point me in the right direction. i will check 2moz when i go home. then i will get back to you thanks for your help and advise so far thats why i love this forum every will always try to help you the best they can. thanks everyone here.
mine shows a VID in core temp as 1.1375v @ 4050.00MHz(450.00 x 9.0) Prime 95 Blend=100% load
:up:YaHoo !
ya Need to burn-in the CPU in for awhile before pushing these CPU's Hard ! the sensors will take a few days to move correctly .. as u can damage them & the CPU if pushed hard too early
.. A word of warning !
my CPU sensors were wildly different the 1st 3 days i had my Q9650 & then they have settled down......the sensors are now within 4 degrees of each other
& you should use the newest RealTemp 2.79.7 it is way more dependable with the newer quads
can't do SS right now off to work
temps under load 100% is 39,38,38,41 in RealTemp Prime 95 Blend @4GHz
I bet you have C1 or other energy saving option enable and if you don't upgrade your CoreTemp, Everest and etc it will show a lower VID also...
I had the version before 0.99.3 and my 'true' VID was 1.11v and after I updated Everest and coretemp it corrected the VID to 1.2125v.
all these CPU's(the Q9650) are great everyone is hung up on the VID # not to worry .. just don't push them hard until burned in ...
An intel rep came on the forum many months ago when QX9650 first came out. He suggested slow increase in voltages, running TAT or similar, for break-in. Huge jumps in voltage aren't a good idea...even 1.25v to 1.35v is a bit much...I have followed this and even after running IBT for a week @ 90c, I've noticed absolutely no degredation, and if anything, temps have dropped a few degrees.
I just picked a a rampage extreme to try out with this 9650. I know most people say the maximus 2 formula i have atm will clock quads better, but i'm stuck at 480fsb with the maximus. Maybe i can get more with the rampage. bbl with results.
