Yes sir but not so much....for water.
Im more concerned with the temps which are hitting 52/54c with side panel on.
Dropping down to 1.65 the NB is hitting 48c still hot...
I will likely run it at 1.71 as set in bios and 1.74 real as reported by PC Probe II once I add water. If the chipset dies I will RMA and report back here of my follies but if it doesnt then maybe these chips can take it...
I just ordered this from newegg at the open box price of $250.99. I should have it at the end of the week.
still waiting on my MM case to get here for this new mobo will be here in 4 days
I've gotten back my RMA'd mobo and RAM.
So far in pairs the Ballistix have had no errors in Memtest86+ after 17 passes for the first pair and for the second pair I only did 3 passes but no errors.
Tested them both at DDR800 and DDR1066 speeds.
Left the DRAM voltage on auto and this is using the 0602 BIOS (previously I was using the 0505 BIOS).
Right now I am testing all 4 sticks in at DDR1066 and when I left home it was on test 8 with no errors so far on the first pass.
Did yours work out okay?
No, I have to RMA it. Did they send you another rev 1.02 board? Just curious. I think I might try another one. I want to like this board, maybe I just had bad luck. BTW, the 5 out of 6 sticks that were testing bad on the Maximus tested fine in the 680i. Weird how the one stick would always test ok on the "bad" Maximus.
Good luck with yours, I hope it behaves this time out. :-)
ive been getting a weird occurance with this board's voltage settings. I have all settings except the Vcore and the Vdimm set to Auto, yet according to Asus Probe the voltages for a few things are "too high". Anyone else get this?
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...e/voltages.jpg
This merely means that you shut your system down before the processes were allowed to exit the memory. I have seen this BSOD in Vista x64 a few times if I shut down quickly without closing any open programs that are running......I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Well I ordered this board so I'll post what I get with my Q6600 G0. I have to RMA my P5K because it has a weird POST bug......it's like playing Russian roulette when you turn it off.
anyone figure out what the LCD option "User String" mean in the bios? I would love to be able to put some useful information on the LCD rather than a clock...
anyone have any tips for getting better memory clocks out of this board? I have Static Read Control disabled, Transaction booster disabled and relax set to 1. Any other key settings here?
Bench now with everest for read, copy and write tests then I use these settings Static read control ENABLED transaction booster DISABLED relax level 1 and bench again, also after bios update to 701 ram performance increased well...
For the LCD, with the Striker ( haven't unpacked it yet for the Formula), User string enabled that you could enter eg your name nickname to be flashing once the pc has powered up... (but maybe programmers can do more than me lol)
The issues with not loading 100% has hit my Folding as well now..."System" seems to jump from between 0 and 25% in Task Manager and my frame times have dropped by over a minute at nearly 200MHz higher clocks... If I lower the vCore (it's not stable but can Fold for about 30mins) the problem goes away!
This is pissing me off now, might just RMA the board (would OcUK let that be a legit reason?) and go back to my Striker...
Hi do you all have to pay for Everest benchmark or is there a free one , i am looking for one that isnt a trial version , as the ones i try are all 30 day and it comes up trial in some of the tests. thanks
Still need my temps question answered. Since 0701, what temps do I believe? CoreTemp or the reading in BIOS/PC Probe?
I just placed an order for this board, so looking forward to seeing how it performs. I'm really happy that it is DDR2 compatible though; Crucial Ballstix 2 GB PC2-8500 has yet to fail me :)
Anyone else using the same RAM? how tight have you managed to get the timings on this board?
Reason for buying it is that my old i975X absolutely hated the G0 Q6600 and was terrible at performing above 340 FSB even at higher voltages.
It seems as a final result, that these board needs high volts to do anything. and I mean anything, In the overclocking world.
Because I've got it stable at 435x9 and 480x8, But Nothing higher, Even with Xtreme volts.
Plus, Anything over 1.65volts on the core, stops the system from posting. Which isn't really the CPUs fault. So I think there is a Major Bios update in order.
Also, I need to test bios 0505 soon. To see if i can get better clocks out of it. I tried 06xx and 0701. The Memory timings are fine, I got better performance in memory then i did with my P5K at the same clocks.
Hmm.. there's hoping a BIOS release would fix it, but if it doesn't I'm going to be a little bit peeved.
I'd love to be able to go with 450x8 without any 'majorly worrying' voltage increase, glad to hear memory timings are great though.
I'll persist with this board, and stick with the optimism that future BIOS upgrades will shape it up nicely... it was a similar situation with the P5W64-WS but stability gradually got better. Shame they never fixed the cold-reboot on it though, the P5W-DH Deluxe didn't have that problem even though the boards were very similar.
The feature set is just perfect for what I'm after and I plan on avoiding DDR3 like the plague... until late next year.
I believe if you want a 450 FSB, To use 450x8, to get 3.6Ghz, But the NB and FSB Term Volts would still need to be over 1.5volts
I say, Don't cancel, This motherboard is only a month old and we've already seen what? 4-5 Public bios releases?
*EDIT* Plus they give you a Advance Edition of 3DMark06, Who can beat that motherboard combo? :P
Thanks for the vote of confidence :D haha I edited my post quite significantly before you finished writing your message, apologies for that! yeah the software bundle package is outstanding, totally agree.
I look forward to posting my eventual results once it arrives either tomorrow or the day after.
Glad this thread is about, such information is invaluable to new users.
Hi,
I have the system in my signature, and without detailing it, my P965 won't give me 1MHz above 390 FSB, even after NB strap change at 401MHz and above, whatever voltage settings/timings/number of ram modules... I try.
It is, exactly the same limit with my previous Q6600 B3.
I looked on the main topics of P35 and X38 boards, and it seems the Maximus is the way to go.
The >1.5vcore bug with quads is bizarre though. As it presents, it could be a hardware issue. I won't like to spend so much money and sit at 3.6GHz because I can't shoot my G0 with some elctric shocks :explode2:
So I have some questions if you can help me:
1- I'd like to be sure of that >1.5 vcore issue with quad cores. Does-it mean, no OC above 1.5v?
2- Also, any one tried the graphite mods if they fixed this issue instead of maybe a buggy PLL bios setting?
3- When OC the Q6600 above 3.8/3.9GHz, so very high FSB for a quad, what temperatures are going the NB and SB while using Prime95 Large FFT, or better, OCCT last beta in RAM mode with the stock cooling (passive)
4- I have two HR-09U and one HR-05 IFX for cooling the mosfets and NB. I could add a HR-05 IFX for the SB. Is all the heatsinks soldered with the heatpipes or they can be unmounted separately. As the X38 is known to be hotter than a P35, is the passive cooling on the MB or even a NB watercooling enough to cool the mosfets and NB on a highly overclocked quad? (I mean above 1.5 vcore and 3.6GHz)
Many thanks for all owners of the Maximus giving feedback for future users
Hanging probably isn't quite as bad as having your system shut down and turn on after only 1 second or so, at least with the hang it wont potentially destroy any hard-disks.. I had quite a few scares using the P5W64-WS with the RAID array going a bit mental :p:
Have there been any SLIC modified versions of the BIOS put out yet?
701 wasn't stable with my previously stable 3.825. flashed back to the 602 and im having to adjust things... then again, i'm thinking that it was the 505 bios that i tested stable with these settings. hmmm... i'll play around in 602 some more. like others have said, this board needs a huge update bios, not these pis* ant changes.
250 GB of data, bad luck
I don't think I have ever had any bad luck with HD's so far, apart from the RAID scare... oh and one of my ancient seagates died from the click of death, but it randomly started working after a few weeks for about 1 hour, which allowed me enough time to copy all the data off haha.
Bios 702 - no tested

Test Asus Maximus Formula Special Edition X38 S775 Motherboard:

SLIC? :slapass:
Hmm.. confused over all the versions available, 702 would be good though.
anyone test 0702 yet?????
Anyone know where the rapidshare 702 release came from, it's not actually on the ASUS FTP?
This is my first post here so be nice! :D
I have just updated my system slightly to include this Maximus Formula SE board, which is a 1.02g revision. Spec as follows:
Processor: C2D 6550 2.33ghz FSB1333
Memory: Kingston Hyper-X 2gb(2x1gb) 800mhz Low Latency 4-4-4-12 KHX6400D2LLK2/2G
Graphics: XFX 8800GTS 640mb
Sound: Auzentech X-Fi Prelude (in PCI slot above graphics card)
Case: Antec P182 SE
Power: Antec Neo HE 650w Blue
Drives: 2x 36gb Raptors, 1x 320mb Seagate 3gbSATA, 1x Sony IDE DVDRW(to be replaced with SATA version today)
Now, its all setup and working, but not after a few headaches.
Firstly the darn thing wouldn't boot past CPU Init, because I had the Snake light from my P182 case plugged into one of the USB headers. I removed pretty much everything else before I realised this though.
Secondly, despite creating a floppy disk to load the drivers so I could my RAID0 my Raptors, it was having none of it and kept rejecting the disk during XP Setup saying it couldn't create some sort of OEM file? In the end I have installed XP Pro on just one of the drives and I am using the other as the 'My Documents' disk. ;)
/rantON
Now then, once I had everything setup and all the latest updates and antivirus installed I ran the 3dMark06 prog and got a score. Everything was fine and dandy. Using the AI Suite I ran the auto system test button and then ran 3Dmark while using the Auto overclock option, which gave me about 400 extra on the score. I then tried the Turbo option and this was slightly less than the Auto option. I then decided to start changing the multiplier in the manual overclock section. This was set at x7 so I simply changed it to x8 and rebooted. But it didn't reboot and the overclock failed. Fine, I thought I'd leave this manual overclocking malarkey alone and set about putting it on the Auto overclock option again. Now every time I change it to that, or re-run the system test for that option I get a BSOD. I did have 667mhz memory in the system but I have just changed it today to the above Hyper-X 800mhz but it makes no difference, still get the BSOD. Also, every time I reboot my system now, the Wave volume is slid all the way to the bottom??
Have broken something, namely my processor? If so I'll get it RMA'd asap! I have tried to clear the CMOS using the button at the back too but I am not sure if that actually clears it. Should I do a clean XP install, again?
Also, I am guessing its best to manually enter the timings for my memory in to the Bios, as its showing up as 5's rather than 4's for them??

All help is greatly appreciated... :yepp:

Asus SLIC (for Vista) and Hewlett-Packard SLP (for XP activation ;)). Use @ your own risk, tested but I take no responsibilty for any damage to your hardware, small children and/or pets...!
You need to find the OS part of the activation yourself, for both Vista and XP, but if you know of SLIC methods, you should have no trouble...
Hi, having got my 4GB G.Skill DDR2 PC2-8000 installed, without the Crucial, things looking postive, thanks GAR. Ran through memtest a couple of times without any faults with setting at 2.1volts 5-5-5-15 at just below 1000mhz, thet bsod'd at the same settings as my Crucials. So I thought I'd bang in the crucials, no way, bsod immediately booting into vista, are these modules that incompatible?
Thanks...
ChrisC
Bios 702 is from beta tester !
702 made me loose alot of memory bandwidth with the same settings as 0505, seems like 0505 is the best bios s far for me.....whats everyone else on???
Hi, whoops we posted at the same time :-) I tried the G.Skill without the Crucials and it was fine, put in two of the crucials in and bsod's all the time...
ChrisC
question for you guys...
when my board arrives i want to install vista 64 ultimate , and set up raid0 on 3 raptors...
do i need to create a floppy disk with the raid drivers to load during install?
whats the status of the vista issues with the 602 bios?
Is there a Program that will tell me that all the setting of my memory are? Kind of like what A64 Tweaker did for Athlon 64 OCers.
memset.
my 8800gt keeps on blacking out on me randomly and the monitor shuts off as if theres no video signal
I didnt have this problem with my 8800GTS
anybody else getting this problem?
Sooo okay. I have something that may help everyone but I don't know if this is old news.
But first :) my RAM failed the tests again with all 4 sticks. I'm just gonna leave it as it is. I should've gotten the G Skill that Gar has :(
I upped the voltage to 2.3 and there is only 1 failure so far.
Now to the important stuff....
Has anyone heard of the EPU pencil mod for this board?
I was at a comp store today and met the owner who has this board at 4.005 Ghz!
I forget the FSB I saw but it was on a x9 multiplier with vCore at 1.51v and 0602 BIOS.
The temps were VERY cool too. Everything was below 40 deg in ASUS probe (CPU was around low 30s) and under load.
He said he was cooling on air and all this was thanks to a pencil mod for the EPU since the EPU was causing all the overclocking problems with this board.
There is a resistor on the top right of the EPU that he uses a 4B pencil to short the two ends of.
The other thing is that he was using some new RAM that is not available (in Canada) yet. The timings and latency was amazing. Sorry I didn't get more but I haven't slept all night :shakes:
If I get a chance later, I will try to post a pic of the resistor to pencil out.
OR maybe someone else can post a pic of the EPU and surrounding resistors and I will edit and repost.
OR is all that I am saying just old news???
You mean something like these?
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/9381/4ghzjt9.jpg
I didn't see a difference between 0602 & 0701 as far as Everset is concerned:
0602
RD: 8582
WT: 7277
Copy: 8045
Lat: 58.2
0701
RD: 8593
WT: 7180
Copy: 8028
Lat: 58.3
Thats nothing extra special, done it with older bios and with 2 sticks of memory(but with 1:1 divider):
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/bull...13m08.705s.jpg
anyone else have problems getting this board to finish dual 32M SuperPi with 4X1Gb? No matter what the speed or timings one thread always seems to crash at step6-7...
On my P5K I run static read control at disabled and transbooster on auto. I've found that changing trans booster to anything but auto can lead to conflicts with memory timings. From what I understand this affects the latencies of the NB......but I really have no proof of this other than bandwidth benches.
Guys, the overclocks may not be anything mind blowing, but this thing about modding the EPU chip might be what we need?
Does anyone have any information on it?
I'm interested to know as well.....mine should be here tomorrow or the day after, provided they shipped from the Memphis warehouse rather than California.
I already downloaded all of the drivers and BIOS 0602.
BTW, is the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software required if we're not running RAID? I have two SATA HDDs and one external USB, but I'm not running RAID.
Has anyone experienced any issues running their SATA drives in AHCI mode? I'm running a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 as my slave SATA and a Western Digital Caviar as my master in Vista x64 Ultimate. I've never run my HDDs in AHCI....not sure if they support NCQ and such but I'm checking on it. Here is the WD drive at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073
That EPU mod seems to be our fix for the vcore issue.......if someone finds anything about it please post asap.....i could get my 3.9ghz overclock back!!!!!
Memset v3.4 Beta 3 : http://perso.orange.fr/Tweak-and-Sof...Set34beta3.exe
I don't have an X38 so I don't know if it works or not but it wont hurt to try.
CN :)
i hear that!!! i've been able to get 3.8 (9 multi) stable and 3.6 (8 multi) stable... but as soon as i try the 9 multi with a higher fsb then 425, it's not even close to stable. can't figure out for the life of me. i would think that the only voltage i'd need to change when upping the multi would be the cpu related ones, right? i mean that's the only thing i'm changing is the cpu clock speed so everything else should stay the same?
i picked up one of these mobos the other day and slapped on a Q6600 and i'm having memory issues too
The system boots and runs OK, but crashes sometimes and sometimes programs run choppy with short freezes between operations (ie running a game, or loading multiple instances of internet explorer)
Was there a solution to this issue? Should I try higher bus ram? (1066 maybe?) cause i'm running everything stock right now, no overclock, nothing...and yet when I memtest, my system fails every pass, i'm going crazy here >.<
http://rapidshare.com/files/67950213...-ASUS-SLIC.zip
Here ya go, same file as I'm use...not had a single problem with it, overclocks at least as far as 0505 for me, not tried further yet, but I do still have the 100% load issue with it @ 3.9GHz...
i still cant get this :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: SuperPi Stable. Its gotta be a bios problem, cuz i cant imagine anything else...
people with memory errors please check actual voltage in the bios hardware monitor as the settings in the extreme tweaker are not very accurate. I am running 4x1gb ballistix pc8500 tracers, no issues at all, prime stable over 8hours. will try that super_pi 32mb test. btw, i am running my quad at 400x9, memory at 1066. ill check back in later. 0602 bios.
u have to flash your bios to get the 0602 right? they dont come with that version do they? (even though I purchased mine like 7 days ago?)
Yes he did mention the vdroop
Well he said it was stable and I guess I believe what he said from the screen that I saw.
I doubt he was just sitting their waiting for a customer to mention the maximus and then start talking about his setup?? ;)
As for email and phone, well he does have a store so he's not that hard to track down.
I will try to take a pic and post it.
Wish I had more to tell but I just came off the night shift and just had to get home.
Okay so I guess the overclock was not that great but his temps seemed very low and I don't know but was the voltage high or low for that kind of overclock? (the 1.51 vCore)
yeh u will need to flash it to 0602.
mine are Prime Blend stable for over 12 hours as well, but they wont run Pi for :banana::banana::banana: for some reason....
This is the resistor that needs to be shorted.
You just take a 4B pencil and mark on the top of the resistor to connect the contacts on either end.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6...chipoa7xr6.png
Sorry but I couldn't find a more detailed pic and my board is under my desk and my camera doesn't like that. None of my pics came out clear.
If some brave soul is willing to try this, let us know how it goes! ;)
Okay basically what I got from the guy is that the vdroop and general overclocking stability is due to the EPU.
Of course you'll have to forgive that I had no sleep in the last 24+ hours so I only remembered some main points and hoped that someone here would be able to make sense of it?!
Just wanted to share and hope something comes of it.
whats the big deal... http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=264643
460 is stable enough the problem is trying to get 485 stable...
0701...
for a note for anybody using a 8800GT
I always set my PCI-E freq @ 110 but when I received my 8800GT, it would black screen after a while. Once I set it back to 100, the problem went away..
I never had that problem with my 8800GTS. I guess pci-e 2.0 cards are just not comfortable at a freq more then 100..
These are the settings I have used to get my 4x1gb pc8500 tracers stable at 1066 as well as oc my q6600 to 3.6@400x9. The biggest issue is the discrepancy between the bios settings and the voltages in windows/bios hardware monitor. This set up is prime stable over 8 hours with round off checking and alaso super_pi 32m stable, and memtest86+ over several hours. I hope it helps someone.
