I could use some help here on overclocking my new E8400. I'm new to Intel overclocking because I was still playing with an obsolete AMD 4000+ series CPU.
As far as I understand VID is the standard voltage the chip will run on when at standard speed. I guess my chip's VID was 1.18V @ 3Ghz (Q817A240; pack date 4-6-2008).
I already searched the internet for some basic settings to start from. The following settings got me into Vista64 but when I start orthos it already gives errors after app. 10 seconds. Would pls take a look at my current settings and give some advise:
CPU ratio: 9.0
FSB: 450
FSB strap: 400
PCI-E: 100
DRAM freq.: 1800
Timings: 8-7-7-25-2T @ 1.98V (factory specs are 7-6-6-24-1T @ 1.9V)
CPU volt: 1.425V
FSB temination: 1.3V
NB volt: 1.45V
Temps. idle: 42 and 36 (measured with speedfan v4.34)
Everything else is on auto including, load line calibration, CPU spread spectrum and CPU PLL voltage.
In my opinion these settings are way to high as compared to other E8400 users here on the board. However lowering one of these settings results in BSOD or no POST. Thanks in advance for the advise which is much appreciated!!!!
I disagree. I need 5ghz and so do many people. For gaming the more mghz the better. Most high end SLI/Crossfire setups you cant use to fullest potential because of CPU bottleneck. I definitely want a 5ghz 24/7 machine. Not just to say i have a 5ghz, i want to run my games at 2560x1600 with the graphics as high as i can set them.
Man. At 2560 res it's not the CPU speed holding you back... trust me. Unless you're playing Quake3 that is :)

Any idea of air overclocking?
what means - degraded E8400?
Does it mean i need more vcore for the oc that i have?
Is it possible that my ds3 965 rev.3.3 has more than 1.5v(locked for 965) pll?
Imagine i change my cpu cooler for a worst one and instead of heaving 60ºC i have 65 or 70ºC is it possible that i might have to give it more vcore to be stable?
New realeses of bios for the board my change that all?i think i flashed my board with a new one and now i need more vcore or is it degrading?i used 1.35v in bios and now i need 1.3750 i think.
up plz
so far from this q817 this passes orthos i let it run for nearly 2 hours passes prime i have not tried occt yet
this chips vid is 1.1875 in core temp and in the bios..
only thing is the ram strap i am running 333/800 im trying to run higher but have to work on keeping that stable it failed orthos after a couple min with a higher strap
edit thought i was getting lucky this time: for some reason this cpu will boot with 1.21xx vid in the bios but nothing more??? anything higher even one step i get a reboot then dies on me i have to clear cmos and start over?? any suggestions??
with this new chip at idle core 0 stays at around 45deg where core 1 drops to 29??? i put a razor on the heatsink and it appears almost perfectly flat could this simply be a bad sensor?? under full load they get to be about 5-6deg of each other?? i tried 2 different heat sinks with almost the same exact result a xig and true??? or bad chip/ heat spreader?? at idle there is literally 10-15deg difference between the cores??
any help would be appreciated thanks
edit this mobo is driving me nuts. if i set this oc in the bios and save and exit runs perfect passes everything... if i shut down and try to restart i get the damn c1 error and no boot i have to go back to the bios after doing a cmos clear then reset the oc settings and it boots to windows and passes anything i throw at it???
what the heck is that about?? chip seems like a really nice one though so far minus the temp issues with the sensor 0
I don't think that you really need 5GHz for 24/7. That will "damage" your CPU too because you need 1.6V+ for that so you need phase cooling for 24/7 than because there is no air cooler that can hold one CPU @ 5GHz @ 1.6V+ for 24/7 even if you tested stability and passed 1h.
Most Q740 do 4GHz with ~1.25V
Some kind of that. If you go over 72.2°C on 45nm CPU there is big chance to degrede it. One you have degreded it it'll never (rarely do) be the same so you'll need little bit more boltage for do the same freq as you did before.
so i have temps arounf 73-74c underload i should back down my voltage?
i just took up my OC to 3.85ghz(428x9) from 3.6ghz im useing 1.325v i think it is
should i try lower voltage to get this OCi just took it to 1.325v i didnt try anything less. heres some shots of OCCT.

it shows a little drop in vcore from what its set at. should i try a lower voltage?
is this to high?
i backed the vcoe down to 1.275v wouldnt stay stable. bumped up to 1.300v and is fine right now. OCCT is running temps have hit 72c
How is the ambient temp in the room you have the PC? I see you're in OH, so that's US-East if I'm mistaken, which means outside temps are hitting about low 80s to low 90s this time of year. I would advise you to get a better air cooler, but without knowing your ambient temp I cannot say it yet.
Hey guys, in general do the e8500's clock better than the e8400's? I have the chance to pick one up (it's a Q740A476), but it has never been oc'ed on air, only on LN2 and DI in the 5200+ range.
My temp in the house right now is 79f and i have the coolermaster hyper tx2 cooler (lapped also)

i think im gonna back it back down to 3.6ghz and be safe.
here is a link to the mobo that it did it on.. im trying to find the actual link to the other article.

okay finally stable at this and will cold boot without issues.. arghh this mobo is making me pull my hair out: temps are just at or 1-2deg over 60.. with 1.28v on the cpu. i can go up to 4.2 on the cpu but temps were hitting just at or under 70 and i cant seem to get it prime or orthos stable.. this is after over an hour of orthos so im sure this will be fine.. id like to squeeze it a bit more though...and i do think i can lower the vid some more seeing as i was fully orthos stable at 1.26 but i was not using the special add vid feature on the dfi and it would not cold boot for me i had to reset the bios..but after that it went straight to windows and ran orthos for over 4 hours.. so im sure i can drop this a bit more.. ill play more later
Is it possibel that a 965 chip has more than 1.5v pll?
I´ve putted in bios 1.36vcore for 4000mhz when i bought it and now i only can do an orthos stress 1h with 3950mhz.I used it at that vcore 24/7.The only change i did was the new bios, from f13q(beta) to F13.
:rofl:ya just like Arizona:ROTF:
cannot wait for the E8600's!! gona buy 10 right off or whatever the limit per customer is and find the golden one and sell the rest ;)
