Dude cheers for the advice, but you're describing exactly what I've done...
I started by finding the max FSB of the CPU while being easy on the RAM, then I find the fastest speed at which I can run the RAM (at SPD, which is 5-5-5-15 @ 2.4v on the Dominator). I've not been concerned with the temp of the RAM, as it's running nowhere full speed - but when I have checked, the sticks have been fine to touch and are only warm. I've not bothered pushing the timings, but I may get round to it.

I have disabled all of those 'Hyperpath' and throttling features and have done from the start!

Noobie Questions, request your indulgence

Just finished installing and running the P5W DH. Booted up ok and installed Win XP Pro wirh Sp1 and Sp2 with no problems.

Now I noticed that when the computer is shut down, the laser mouse light is still on. Why is power still there, shouldn't the light be off: was so on my other computer?

Also, I thought the SATA drives were to be hot swappable. I do not see anything in the task bar for this (safe to remove device as for the USB devices). Went to the Device Manager and clicked on the Sata drive and have choices for uninstall, disable, etc. Do you do it through here with the disable function? Then you can remove the drive?

I don't have a need for the Raid function, but do want to use the SATA drives as a bunch of separate drives (video editing and storage). This being so, do I still have to install Raid drivers?

Also, I am installing a X-Fi card and will not be using the MB sound system and would assume do not need to install the RealTek sound driver as well?

Many good things on this forum, but need to get past some of these basics first.

I managed 400mhz higher in oc'ing in the process of lapping every chipset fan, cpu hsf / applied AS5.
I also just reseated the heatsink, made sure firm contact.....temps dropped a bit.


I have some extra northbridge cooling which I heavily recommend.

yes,there are hot swappable once you installed and enabled AHCI in Bios.But you won't have any option to remove them via windows(AFAIK).

On to my question:

I'm running an e6600 1.47v @ 3150mhz with a CNPS9500 + AS5
4:5 memory clock (4gb Titanium Alpha VX2 PC2-8000) @ 2.35v (set by SPD)
1.65v northbridge
1.20v south
1.40v fsb
all inside a massive Thermaltake Tai-Chi case (plenty of air flow).

When running Orthos, I've seen the Intel TAT report up to 67c! Am I going to damage my CPU? Is this operating temp at full load alright for the long term? At idle it's about 52c. I use this PC for development - I hate it when it's unstable.

On a side note it seems like anything over 350fsb fails Orthos within seconds :(, could this be temperature related? Any tips?

Temps are up there for mild OC.........I say reseat cpu / lapp and sand every surface. Spend some quality time with the mobo / cpu.....

you also don't need 1.65 on the MCH for 350mhz fsb. 1.55v should suffice.

I actually need 1.65 vmch to got stable with my chip/mobo. I would hold off on sanding the CPU and heatsink. Reseat with Arctic Silver and prep the mobo(if you haven't already) and replace the Asus TIM and cool the NB if needed.

If the reseat doesn't help then you might need to lapp. Prepping the mobo by modding the NB and SB heatsinks makes a huge difference. Also, bring the memory down to 1:1 and see if that helps too. My board ran a 4:5 and even a 2:3 stable for a while but one day said enough and now at 355fsb memory deviders F everything up for me. The good side of that is I got my XMS2 PC8500 running stable at 710mhz 3-3-3-6.

Thanks for the advice. I think I do need 1.65v on the NB to be stable. I've had a heck of a time trying to run stable with this MB. I may need to re-seat the CPU and reapply the AS5. I remember when I first installed the CPU I had to remove it once, so that probably didn't help the AS5 bond. How does one remove AS5 from a heatsink & CPU?

Also, what does it mean to prep the MB?? I have applied AS5 to the NB (lightly scratched the stock paste off with a small screwdriver heh.. probably not the best method), but that's all I've done.

Basically follow this thread. Everything but the voltmods are pretty much necessary to get a nice OC.

Be sure to follow the methods mentioned. screwdriver TIM removal is not an approved technique :)

You wont need to update bios chip, remove wifi chip. but follow everything mentioned for the NB and SB heatsinks. I even have a 40mm fan on low on the NB.

The bios (1707) is set at 400MHz FSB (multiplier 8).
If you look at the image, CPU-Z correctly reports 3200MHz on a 400x8 FSB.
Orthos reports 3600MHz.
Coretemp reports 3600MHz at 450x9.

I suppose everybody gets those weird readings? Or am I the only one?

By the way, the mobo overclocks like mad, pretty much stock volts except for the CPU, my temps are ridiculously low (20c at idle) :toast:

@1.50v on MCH I got 53 degre C on the north-bridge heatsink on idle (case open)
That mean the chip temp is higher than that. :eek:

I wonder what would be the temp at 1.65v MCH :confused:

How did you get that temp?? A probe in the northbridge?

I forgot to mention that the temp is way below 50C if the MCH voltage setting is AUTO. around 35C.
That is why I would carefull if trying any higher mch voltage. If you burn your finger just by touching the heatsink, add a fan. lol

Yes, week 30/32 chips, revision A, do really well, and don't require much voltage to get good clocks. I had thought you meant the earlier revision A's, like my crap week 27 on water.

I can boot into windows at 385x9, fix my memory settings, and go up to 400x9 with 1.65vcore, but the box'll freeze or reboot as soon as I actually do anything.

I concur with a few of the posters regarding to try cleaning your cpu and heatsink and reapply AS5. Being in the high 60's on your cores isn't all too bad from what we know; it's when you're in the 70's that the life of the chip supposedly lowers. However, you should not be getting this hot with so little voltage, even only on air.

The MCH at 1.65 should be okay as long as you don't burn your finger on the heatsink when you touch it. If it's too hot to touch, add a 40mm fan to it, or replace it totally with an aftermarket cooler.

Simply adding a 40mm fan for me worked wonders. Not only did it cool the NB by at least 10c but it must be circulating air at the base of the CPU heatsink because my cpu tamps dropped by quite a few degrees as well.

I'm definitely going to clean & reapply AS5 under every heatsink.

iadstudio, thanks for the link on prepping the mb. I've got all kinds of cleaning tools on my grocery list now... including a 40mm fan. My NB isn't finger-burning hot, but I'm always down for keeping things cool. The CPU temp is what worries me the most.

Thanks again for the advice folks! I'll post (hopefully lowered) temps once I've completed this work.

I have a pretty serious case of diminishing overclocking ability with my board. I have an E6400 that was running fine at 400MHz FSB and would run almost 100% at 450MHz. I had it at 400MHz for at least 3 months with no problems at all. I shut off my computer, then removed a USB connection from the lower 2 USB ports which caused the machine to start up again. Before it could boot I yanked the power as I was removing the other cables. I moved the computer to another desk and connected everything back up and turned it on. I got the "Overclock Failed" message on boot. Ever since then I've had an incredibly difficult time getting it to run at even 333MHz FSB. I've flashed the BIOS twice, cleared CMOS and everything I could think of. I'm stuck at 333MHz FSB on a chip I know can do WAY more than that. Any suggestions?
