Does anyone think that a 4400+ would have a problem getting to 2.5ghz on SILENT air? I'm wanting to buy a Scythe ninja (or the new Zalman) and put it in a P180 for a silent, fast setup that I don't have to touch for about 2 years or so. :)

Someone is using the Scythe and his load temps are 43c or so (stock I believe) so I think it might be doable.

Most likely answer is yes :) Expect the temp to be slightly higher but anything under 55c on air in my book is fine... (hey, I am in S. Cali :p)
You did read MikeC's review of P180 right? It gives you some good tips and ideas for using P180 fan directions.

Yeah I read his review, really piqued my interest in the case. I'm sick of changing out hardware so often and botching boards due to condensation/vmodding so I really just want something slightly o/c'd, quiet (for once), and fast enough to last me about 2 years. I have open-air headphones so a loud pc really detracts from music for me; but then I am picky.

Here is the thread where someone is cooling a 4600+ 'passively' (using case fans). I wouldn't be opposed to using a low speed 120mm fan on the heatsink, but quieter is better. Coming from a loud prometeia my current temporary system (P4 in an antec sonata) is virtually silent, and it's a welcome change :)

It really depends on the chip you get, but I would say 2.5GHz would require about 1.5V from a really bad chip (and no extra voltage if you got a good one). Worst case scenario load temps would be around 50C on a Zalman 7700Cu with the fan at full tilt, but I would think the Ninja would cool with better efficiency with all those heatpipes.

I read the P180 review, and the best cooling setup had a 120mm fan on the heatsink in addition to the case fans. It wouldn't be such a bad idea to stick a Nexus or Panaflo on the Ninja at 5V...you would not be able to hear it, and it would drop the load temps a few degrees C.

It's going back. And I'll keep tweaking my 4400+ for now; still trying to get 2.7GHz stable but I don't think it will happen unless I get a better cooler or remove the IHS.

BTW, CPU-Z reported the revision as SH9-E4? Aren't they supposed to be SH9-E6, or is that only for the Toledos?

I got a CDBHE 0515RPAW, guess I won't be OC'ing much then :(

Final results tested overnight with BIOS 704-3
NF4 Ultra D
4200x2 @2689MHz CPUZ LINK
OCZ Premier @ 192 (Ocz DDR 500 on RMA)
Air cooling stock HS FAN
1.6v
chip is 0521

Testing was with Systool Pi running 2 instances overnight, no errors.

Temps 54c at full load ambient 27c. I won't give it more voltage to go higher, I just don't have the cooling for it. However I do have a CPUZ at faster speed here FASTER but as I said, air on this thing sucks, I will be trying the pelt/water next.

Actually you won't know for sure. Yours is a week 15 and mine was a 24; vastly different in terms of how they could overclock.

Do me a favor and tell me what revision your CPU is as reported by CPU-Z. As I suspected, 4200+ come in both SH9-E6 and SH9-E4 revisions, and I have a feeling that the latter revision sucks. My 4400+ is a SH9-E6 and it is doing 2.7GHz.

mine is SH9-E4 and it definitely doesn't "suck". I think it's a crap shoot no matter the stepping, week or anything else. With more volts I can go higher, I will just need to cool more with something other than stock air.

Finally looks like I got it stable at 2.7GHz! It took a LOT of tweaking. I posted a screenie earlier with it stable at 2.7GHz with Prime95 Small FFTs, but Large FFTs was erroring out. I updated to the 704-2 Beta BIOS, tweaked with it for a few days, and found a setting that both my CPU and memory seem to like.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (CCBWE 0517MPMW)
MOBO: DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D
BIOS: 704-2 Beta
COOLING: Zalman 7700-Cu @ 12V
MEMORY: Patriot 1GB (2x512MB) XBLK TCCD
PSU: Fortron 550W
CASE: None
FANS: Zalman 90mm @ 12V On Mosfets

Well they have two OPNs for the 4200+. One is E4 and one is E6. Only one OPN for the 4600+ (E4).

I just don't understand how this is possible, as the 4600 is also basically a 4200 (same core), so why would there be two revisions (and so soon)?

As far as I have known (ever since X2 was released) E4 was Manchester and E6 was Toledo.

IcyRocket has X2 4800+ on phase change. No cold bug (at least not until -50°C).

Well, 61°C is quite a lot. I guess you need high voltage because of high temps on air. Mine is running 2.7 GHz @ 1.43V dual-prime (v24.13) with 45-48°C on water and still with HS.

I'm not too worried about the temps. If the high temps mean that I've shortened the lifespan of my CPU from 20 years to 10 years, so be it :) I just wanted to get it stable at 2.7GHz on air and the memory wasn't playing nice until now.

A heatpipe cooler (or maybe water cooling) is in the future. I'm also really intrigued with removing the IHS and I might try that first (very carefully).

I think with something like a Big Typhoon, XP-120, or Ninja plus a good 120mm fan, I would be seeing load temps closer to 55C.

Hya guys, this is my first post.

Ive just put together a 4400+ Asus A8N-E and 2GB Corsair XMS 2-3-3-6.

Im gonna start clocking 2moro, and i wondered how do you assign Prime or Super PI to both cores, infact how do you assign anything to a particular core?

Ive updated the BIOS for X2 support, and ive installed AMD drivers, so im all good.

Hicks,

With Prime95, just go into the "Advanced" menu, and then go to "Affinity". Set one instance to run on CPU 0, and the other to run on CPU 1.

For any other program, do Ctrl+Alt+del to bring up Task Manager. In the "Processes" tab, find the program that you want to assign to a particular CPU, right click on it, and go to "Set Affinity". Same thing; set it to either CPU 0 or CPU 1.

You can also use Systool and under benchmarks there's an option to run two thread of pi..... my favourite cheesy way to test.

That's the way I do it with Prime95 (v24.13).

Hicks, don't forget that you need 2 copies of the P95 folder to run 2 instances.

SP2004 is based on old Prime 23.8.x code and doesn't stress A64 FPU's completely. Use 24.x code only (A64 optimized, see the readme's) for Athlon64 if you want "real stability".

Im getting decent enough temps on me 90c, so iam hoping i can reach 2.6ghz. Ram might not be up to it though.
