Yep, "HD5870" should be >2× HD4870, or it's a huge fail considering the die size.

Nvidia and AMD are preparing to launch their latest DirectX 11 supporting GPUs in the second half of 2009, according to sources at graphics card makers.
Nvidia is scheduled to complete engineering samples of its DirectX 11-based GT300 GPU at the end of September in order to start shipping in December at the earliest, the sources noted.
Meanwhile, AMD is prepared to launch its DirectX 11-based Radeon HD 5800 series (RV870) in late September and will start mass shipping in October. AMD will launch two models initially, the Radeon HD 5850 and 5870, the sources added.
AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products. Nvidia was also contacted, but did not respond by the time of publication.
Thx DVHardware ;)
Nvidia be lucky if it works without a re-spin.
if so add 3 months to that.
ATI be supreme on market for at least 4+months.
look at the 3800 to 4800 jump, the 3870 came out 11/2007 and the 4870 on 06/2008. being only 35% bigger, offered what kind of performance increase? in how many months? i dont get whats so hard to see.
so 15 months after the 4870 we will have something on a smaller process, with a bigger chip. (if they wanted they could make it 500mm2 and get 3x the performance jump, it will just be too expensive to make due to yields and too expensive to buy) but its ALL their choice of how they wish to make it
Sorry to be offtopic, but whatever DX11 may bring to the table it will also be wasted on Dirt 2. Codemasters quiet simply suck and hardly can make prettier visuals than the later NFS crap. Just because their games don't look horrible as a sim racer does not make them halfway decent when you look at what the console halo titles have been doing forever. Also Don't bother boring me with links to screenshots to the counter, GRID fooled us all too.
ATI should consider itself well out of the gates long before anyone is pining to turn on DX11 in a game
That's stupid, that means the x2 would be 699.99$,and probably still not beat out nvidia. Why have the same price with less performance.:shrug:X2 should be 499.99$100$ -200$ CHEAPER WITH HOPEFULLY ON PAR PERFORMANCE IS WHATS NEEDED.
my sources are a big supplier which have allocation :)
Many sites report the Dirt 2 PC version is delayed till December in order to have the DX11 features. Here is one LINK.
I think it's save to say the PC Dirt 2 is not going to be out before the DX11 cards at least in the AMD/ATI case.
I thought Dirt 2 PC was being released in December, did something change?
While 299 for the 5870 might be unrealistic, I think that a $100 gap between those two models might be too much too. ATi plan to release a lot of cards, and if the only difference between the two models is the clock speeds on the ram and core I think ATi will price the 5870 much closer to the 5850, especially considering they'll be releasing the X2 much closer to them than last time.
Basically, I think ATI have built the cards in such a way, that the biggest expense increase over the 4870 cards is the cores themselves. As they've been able to grab almost all the DDR5 made over the last year they'll probably get good rates by shifting the entire range to DDR5
329 US$ HD 5870 and 249 US$ HD 5850 sounds good, if the chip does have 1600 SPs & 32 ROPs. HD 5870X2 can go for 549 US$ then.

San Francisco/Bay Area AMD Community PC Gaming Event
AMD's been cooking up some very cool stuff ... if you were at QuakeCon you might have already seen a sneak peek.
Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here goes ...
On the evening of September 10th in San Francisco, AMD would like to invite fans to join us for the unveiling of a new visual PC experience. Basically, I can't say exactly what you're going to see there, but I can tell you that we’ll be holding a big party with food, drink and tunes, very cool demos of unreleased games, incredible hardware set-ups you have to see to believe and a lot more.

There goes the aggressive pricing:confused:, yet I still hope Theo got it wrong.
^ they're release prices, they'll drop when nvidia introduces the GT300 in Q1 2010.
Yep the prices are something. Every thing is over priced by least $50. They should have hiked the prices only by $50 not $100.
The card that i am interested in costs $600 "For that you can get 2x 4870 x2". When the 4870x2 came out it was $499 i think that is good price but asking $100 more seems rather capitalistic of them. They should have priced 5870x2 at $549, the 5870 at $349 and 5850 at $249, if they wanted to milk the market gently and softly but if the proposed prices are really they really shoved their hands up there.
If you compare the initial price of GT200 series with the highest guestimate of RV580... they are still cheap.
On realease:
GTX280 U$S649
GTX260 U$S449
HD5850 for U$S299 and HD5870 for U$S399 is cheap for next gen. high end cards. For a few months they'll be the fastest sigle cards out there by a huge margin. I think AMD will cut the price after GT300 is launched.
I think ATI will drop prices even in the unlikely event that GT300 is a huge flop. I think it would be an effective strategy because it might enable ATI to pull in some of the less informed people out there who think NVIDIA is the only GPU maker out there that's worth buying from.
launch prices when there is no other dx11 card should be that high at first. 300-400 in october, and 200-300 in december, and then comes the slow decline of prices by about 5% per month for the next year.
