heres mine with a ocz vendetta on it with a fan on the side panel that has cold cat. tubes.
Hey. sail rabbit how hard was it to do that psu mod. I think im going to try that. did you just have to move the wires over?
Metalrush: That's my dvd-rom drive. It's an ide one since I wanna keep the sata ports open for hard drives. Thanks for the compliment.
crazy8s846: if you look through the many pages of this thread, you can find how the mod was performed and pics as well as many other great ideas from the creative people on this thread. Good luck. Looks like you have to have a steady hand with the dremel.

Hi,
As a person said before. Simply cut those 2..euhm, things off on the side.
Well, its not that hard with a "dremel" its just 1 straight line you have to cut, very easy.
Image:
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/108/baytb7.th.jpg
As you can see. The red marking represents those 2 things on each side.
The green line is where you should cut it. Well, thats where I've cutted it.
After that. I removed the front of my dvd writer. But I only removed the front marked green, not the one which is marked red.
http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/8264/dvdftl1.th.jpg
When that one is removed. I used glue, not a extremely strong glue. Just a simple one which you can break if needed. So glue that black foam on the red marked area and glue the front bay on the foam.
You might need to push the dvd writer a little bit back. After that. Everything should fit.
Thats how I did it then.
I did this because it was only ugly and I don't use the dvd writer very often. If I want to open it I just use a button on my google toolbar.
If there is anything else you need to know, call it! :)

Hello, all. First time poster, long time reader. This thread inspired me to do some modification to my first gen Antec Nine Hundred case.
I didn't do anything as elaborate as most of the cases I've seen here, but I did do a little cable management, repainted the case, and put in some sound-activated CCFLs.
Here's some pics:

Ok well got my 900 and I'm getting 2 12" UV cathodes what I want good exposure with, Ive bought a 4" UV replacement so that one 12 will be behind the top of the side door and the other bellow the rear fan. Then I'm getting a 12" red and 12" blue to fade from top to bottom so I'm thinking of places to put them without being seen through the window. My idea was to mount then just behind the border of the inside of the door.
Any ideas/photos of where you have your cathodes.
I bought one 15" CCFL and put it along the side of the case between the door and the drive bays. It's well hidden so you don't see it when looking in the window, but it lights the case up very well. I'll take some pictures of the CCFL inside my case if it will help you.
It may be tough to mount a 12" behind the bottom behind the border, since most of the space will be taken up by the PSU. Not sure if the same would be the case with other nine hundred users, but I'm pretty sure standard ATX PSUs are all the same width and height. About the best you can fit down there would be a 4" CCFL.
@ Titan_X: Nice silver paintjob. I am also in the Tampa Bay area. I just finished my A+ and I am currently working on my CCNA.
@ CHiLD: I like your HSF.. I also spy a B18C.
@ Deckbuild: I am diggin' that Ultra Bay device. I might have to grab one seeing that I am not using 3 fans on the front at this time. I have a Blu Ray drive taking up a spot, and that Ultra Bay would fill in the other 2. I am waiting on slim Blu Ray drives to come down in price.

I think this is by far the Cleanest Cable Management Job I have ever seen in my whole life!!!
It looks like nothing in there is powered or plugged in...
Fantastic mod & job there Rabbit! Very Impressive!!!
I'm sure Kattie will be very happy with that computer. I would be!
@ sailrabbit: grats on being the cool guy in the thread.
I'm going to have to mount the Zalman fan controller box where you did. As you might remember from my past pics, I mounted it in such a way that I need to remove the side panel to adjust.
(if you really want to get nit-picky on the cleanliness, add a black vinyl sticker to the one side of your optical drive to hide the silver, and black Lian-Li thumbscrews)
Your case is so clean and roomy it's askin to throw a party.
Good job.
My recommendation is to by a step drill and a file.
I bought a 10-30mm step drill, its perfect, fit's straight into your standard power drill. Just drill a small pilot hole for it to get started pop it in and away you go as if your just drilling a normal hole.
cleanest holes i've ever seen, file it down to perfection give it a bit of a sand and it's smooth as, or just get u-channel moulding or grommets etc.
Best $20 i ever spent. I never thought i'd be game enough to make my own holes.
Heh.. thx guys! http://theoutkastwarriorz.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
I thought about giving the DVDRW a shot of flat black, but you don't notice it through the side window so I passed. I wish I had on the red SATA cables.
where you lot mounting ur cathodes?
God, its indeed an extremely clean case Sailrabbit!
Like your PSU. Even those "main" cables are hidden. That's a genious idea, really.
By the way. Where do you people but those Crucial Ballistix Tracers? In the nearest shop or do you order them at the website of Crucial? Is it more expensive to buy them at the Crucial website than a shop?
Its very hard to obtain them in my country. I just can't find them. Only the dull looking Crucial memory.
Those things look awesome.

hey i have a question...im planning on building another rig and i wanted to know if the tracers would be a better option over the kingston hyper x memory??
also as far as graphics cards go which is hot now...the 4870 right??
I just built my first computer since... well lets just say the last computer I built I had to set DIP switches/jumpers on all the cards to prevent IRQ conflicts.
Its a pretty basic midrange gaming machine but is certainly alot cleaner inside than it would have been had I not had the benefit of all the info in this thread. So a big thanks to all of you, and here is what an antec assembled by a noob with a screwdriver looks like.
Sorry about the image size, on my home forums it resized them automatically
I cant seem to get that to work here...
*edit* Picture hosting lost. I posted another a few posts down.
:welcome: bro can we see some pics of the inside of your case
What bettwr way to use my first post than to show you my rig :D
First a before Cable management shot, I cleaned/dusted and did cable management this morning took around 2 hours but it was worth it.

And now after cable management
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/S4011081.jpg
A lot clearer, not the best though as the CPU connector and Mobo 24 pins are too short to go any other routes.

Small screen for my 9800 GX2 its only 1280 by 1024, but I'm upgrading later this year so no worries. And yes the curtains are drawn :p it's late evening here.

The trolley I cannibalized to get it off the carpet (Used to suck in a horrendous amount of dust , so got this and fan filters for the intakes).
Probably not that amazing but we all have to start somewhere and seeing as I only have a few saws, drills and no other tools I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
Now for the Specs:
Asus P5N-D (Going to replace as soon as I7 is out.)
Q6600 @ 2.69Ghz (Would push higher but motherboard is awful for O/cing)
9800 GX2
4Gb 1066Mhz DDR2 OCZ platinum RAM
Asaka EVO AK-922 CPU cooler & additional fan
640Gb 7200RPM HDD & 250Gb 7200RPM HDD
And last but not least
Antec 900 which I'm hoping to upgrade to a Antec 1200 next year to give more breathing/working space and to accommodate water cooling once I've got the money.
I'll leave you with the tripping balls photo
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/S4011076.jpg
Hope you liked :) and all your cases are an inspiration to me, if only full time education gave more money I'd be build a rig just as awesome.
I dont think I am going to put a fan on the door for a while (maybe for Xmas I'll get a couple more fans).
It looks like I can take the acrylic off to allow more air to vent through the door area.
Do you think thats a good idea or a waste of time?
With 3x 120mm fan, doing all 60 CFM a piece and a huge 200mm fan, doing 134 CFM at top, which totals in >310 CFM... you really think you need to take off the acrylic side... :P
(and I even didn't count your CPU, GPU and PSU fan... :P)
I cant even fit a fan on the side cus of my CPU cooler.
I think your math is a little off. Thats 120 CFM in from the front and 194CFM+PSU+GPU out the back and top. The in and out dont add together. There is more going out than in so air is being pulled in through the sidw grill where the fan would be.
I would just be changing the side vent from a 120mm circle to a large triangle.
Here is a pic of the inside. Its still a little dark.
All the wires are behind the tray, in the middle HDD bay under the CD or on the bottom so the airflow from the top front fan is clear across
the RAM and CPU and out the back or up the top and the bottom HDD Bay goes across the HDD and into the PSU/GPU in takes.

Ask my dad about the typewriter. Even though it would be balls-to-the-wall awesome to have a Bengal Tiger in my garage, it's there for door dings.
Anyway, got rid of the green CPU fan because it was stupid bright compared to everything else.

They were too short, didn't feel like extending them, so I just took the front USB/Firewire/audio assembly out. I don't have anything I unplug or plug in often so it doesn't bother me.
Oh, alright thanks. I was looking at this thread for a while and it barly looks like anyone at all even used those.
The is the case I was considering when I got a deal on a P180 I couldn't pass up. Clean looking cases, all!
What setting do you guys keep your fans at ( Two in front, One in back , Top , and if you use the side one )
I keep my front two on medium, top on medium, back on high and I can't put on the side fan cause of my CPU Cooler, and the side fan actually did work somewhat when I had it on before I took off my stock CPU Cooler it made my GPU temps drop 3 or 4 degrees but eh its not that big of a deal.
I recently just put my exhaust fan on high because I dont have a pull on my cpu cooler just a push and putting the exhaust on high I guess I thought would be somewhat efficient covering for the pull of it.
Let me tell you though, just with one fan on high you can tell the difference at night when its silent.
i keep my two fronts on medium, the back on high, the side on medium and the top on high
When I had the stock fans, they were all on medium.
Put my green fan back in because I felt like it.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...d/IMG_2134.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...d/IMG_2135.jpg
^ Why do you keep your front fans on the bottom.
You should put the CD/DVD drive at the bottom then a fan then two spacers and then a fan at the top.
Thats what I do because the front fan goes into the cpu and cools ram etc. the fan above the cd drive goes into the graphics and NB , them just sitting on the bottom just basically goes to the PSU and some what graphics card.
Did you notice any temperature changes with 3 fans?
With the third one in front of my CPU it went down a couple of degrees, never compared the GPU temps though.
I did a thorough comparison on my rig: all fans on low and all fans on full speed.
It did a whopping 3 degrees Celsius... well, you guess what speed my fans are running on now :P
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/T7jN3vGVXQ...aLEJf/full.jpg
I have 2 extra fans tho... one in front/top and 1 in the side panel (all original Antac fans... I like the blue glow :P)
Also have a mem-cooler installed (which you can hardly see on this pic... but then you better scroll back a few pages ;))
But where did you put your DVD unit then?:D
I run the top at medium, the back and two front low (no side fan yet). Its fairly quiet that way (the seagate HDD is louder than the fans).
I am only overclocked to 3.185 (from 2.8). My CPU stays 38-40, Motherboard temps 44-48 and GPU 57-61 when I play MMOs all day. Under stress benchmarking the CPU only gets to 46-48. I dont see any reason to increase the fan speeds.
Yup, slime-line 'trick' ;)
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/7PWtzLtjsu...6rjrv/full.jpg
I really need to make some better pics... these suck :D
HI all, GREAT forum here.
So I am in the process of modding my Antec 900. I just drilled the rivets out for easier access. My question is, I cannot pay now to have this machine "powder coated" So I am going to have to use spray paint, I am not painting the "outside" at all, I ma leaving that black. I am going to paint the mobo sheet, and the pretty much everything except the original case (black parts). So Will Spray Paint look and hold up good? What are my options? Thanks all, I appreciate all your help :)
-Jason
Welcome to XtremeSystems kidrock978!
+1 on the slim-line trick
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1.../e-bay040e.jpg
Where do you guys have your molex connectors to the fans.. I don't see any..
The paint job quality will depend on the time you spend to get it prepped and properly painted. If you do a half assed job of prep and applying paint, then you can expect half assed quality. If you take the time to do it right, as you have started to by breaking it down, you can have automotive (or better) quality if you want.
There is a Painting 101 thread around here somewhere, and at least one how to in this thread IIRC. Spend a bit of time getting familiar with the process and do it right, the completed project should be great.
So any tips for Spray Painting? Should I not do it? I kind of have to at this point so I'm just intersted in some tips..
Also is there a detailed instruction sheet on how to do that slim line dvd mod? Thanks all
-Jason
Painting 101 Thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=108396
Hi guys, I'm new to the forum (as are many others) Loving the thread as I just bought an Antec 900 case and I'm transplanting bits and pieces from my old case to this new one. I'm in the process of modding the case for better wire management but I had one question, is there sufficient space at the bottom of the case with the standard legs/cushions to flip the PSU upside down so it draws air from underneath the case? or would I have to install longer legs to get sufficient airflow moving into the PSU?
BTW. I'm currently working in the middle East so it gets very hot and I'm worried about lack of air getting into the PSU with the standard cushions that come at the bottom of the case. Thanks in advance for any help given.
@Defratos - Welcome to XS!
I assume you are planning on cutting a hole in the bottom of the case when you flip the PSU. Depending on how many fans you have in the case already, you may not need to elevate the case since the PSU fan is really only cooling the PSU. If there is adequate airflow into the case, the PSU *should* be fine.
Having said that, however, more airflow is almost always better. Lower temps = longer life for everything electronic. Putting feet or casters on the bottom of the case would do what you want. Check these links for some examples:
http://www.mnpctech.com/casemodstore.html
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ndex&cPath=133
One bit of advice: If this case is going to be sitting on the floor, put a filter on it. Or at least a screen. Dust is bad, m'kay.
Hey thanks for the reply buddy. well in total there will be 5 fans, the standard 2 in front and 1 rear, 1 Side and one Top. Now I've been looking at different PSUs and I came across the Kingwin 700W Modular PSU (pic below) now has anyone tried this before? if so how easy/flexible are the cables because the connections where the LEDs are seem very tight and I'm not sure if I'd be able to route the cables from the back of the case with these types of connections, anyone had any experience with this unit?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/Defratos/PSU.jpg
ok I found the Corsair 620W HX Modular PSU, now would 620W be enough to run most things? I don't have a crazy setup like some people on here I've got the following:
Intel Core 2 Quad (Q9450)
Asus P5E3 Premium MB
OCZ 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3 1600Mhz
ASUS NVIDIA Geforce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E
Only 1 yes 1....Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA 2 7200rpm
HP DVD1040i 18x DVD RW/RAM Lightscribe
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x64bit (and please don't comment on the OS I've already lived with it for over a year now:shakes:)
Zalman CPU cooler (CNPS9700 LED)
and finally 1 x Thermal Control Panel with a 5 slot card reader and two extra USB connections (has an LCD display) not sure how good this is yet so I'll find out soon enough here's a link http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136390
Am I missing anything....humm don't think so, well apart from the PSU which I'm still deciding on
Just got an antec 900. Not got everything to get it going yet though.
I've got the same mobo as you WiLL, and was wondering how you mounted that little fan to the mobo heatsink? as it looks quite good.
are you refering to the coppor heatsinks around the CPU? I haven't fitted it yet, or even seen if it'll fit. I'll see if I can get around to seeing if it'll fit on the weekend.
Got a few more questions, how do you manage to make such a clean circular cut at the bottom of the case for the PSU? the clean cut-outs do not seem to be cut out by a dremel, I know if I tried this with a dremel it'll be less than perfectly square and clean.
Another question, what's the best method of fitting feet to the bottom of the case, specifically what do you guys do with the nuts that site under the PSU? so as to not hit it from the bottom.
Defratos, I have seen posts of three ways to create a circular whole.
The first way is the way you mentioned, to use a dremel, and there are talented people on this board that can make it perfect. There are techniques you can use by holding the dremel at a slight angel and using discs that are half used so the circumfrence of the disc is much smaller.
The second way is to use a chassis knockout punch of the right size. This consists of a tool that has two parts that you basically screw together to create a nice clean hole. This tool is pretty expensive though (in the hunderds of $).
The third is to use a hole saw (make sure you get a metal cutting one) that you attach to a drill that you can buy from home depot or other hard ware stores.
The last two seem easier for unskilled folks like myself. Best of luck.
Thanks for the reply, the last method seems to be the easiest, especially since I've already got a drill, just need to get the hole saw. Any idea what size would be perfect for the PSU? I will measure it later on just curiouse if you know of the top of your head
The size of the hole depends on the size of the fan, they should either match closely or the hole should be bigger to ensure good airflow. For a 120mm fan, I would use a 4.5" or 4.75" hole saw. For a 140mm fan, go to a 5.5". I think that should cover most PSU fans. If you have the option, you can always take your PSU with you when you go to buy the hole saw. That way you make sure it's right.
If you haven't already done so, I recommend looking back through this entire thread. I think there are more than a few posts on just this topic and even some with pictures.
Basic advice for cutting holes in your case:
1) Take everything out and put in a safe place before you cut. Clean up well after you cut. PC's do not like tiny little metal particles.
2) Measure twice and cut once. Take your time.
3) Metal can get hot and sharp when you cut it with power tools. Be careful.
4) Wear eye protection. Though it's not usually a big deal with a hole saw, it's a good habit to get into. Put on safety glasses or goggles every time.
I have seen other posts where users clamp peices of scrap wood to each side of the hole before using the hole saw. From what I hear it gives a cleaner cut and has a lower chance of getting screwed up.
Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. I've trolled throught most of this thread and have found what you are taking about, it's just soo many pages to read through so I'm like half way =). as for the basic cutting advice
1) I've taken most of the things out, and I've already cut the holes lol (made a few holes I didn't actually need) but you guys will see that sometime later on the week hopefully.
2) Learned this the hard way
3) Learned this the hard way too lol
4) Yup eye protection was the first thing I got (along with the dremel)
unfortunatly I don't have the PSU unit yet, I have to get it ordered from the UK and shipped over as NO ONE in the entire city sells a decent PSU (nothing above 500W) and even then its a crappy little unit. Even trying to find DDR3 memory has been impossible which is why it's being imported over too. I think I'll pay a visit to the hardware store tomorrow and see what they have handy. Thanks again for the replies.
I used a dremel to cut my airhole (will I get kicked from the board for saying that? :D) and a file to finish it (nearly) perfect.
It works like a charm but you have to be patient. Also when you decide to do it with a (hole) saw.
The MDF is to give the plating a little bit more 'body' during cutting (yes, use something like MDF, not a too dence kind of wood. This will only smell like fire or even start one. Remember you are cutting/sawing with a blade for metalcutting so the (safety-)wood will get hot anyways). Otherwise there is a chance the plating will dent or even rip when you are cutting or sawing.
Be sure it is stable and static when you start cutting. You won't be the first who is cutting body parts.
Safety first... a nice 900 second ;)
I used a 40x10mm LED fan from FrozenCPU. To attach it to the Gigabyte's northbridge, I used some average screws laying around. The screws will screw in between the fins on the northbridge. Just be careful not to apply a lot of pressure, as this could damage the chip underneath.
Opps I thought Slamz was talking to me (should of read it clearer) Thanks for the feedback guys, just have to wait for my PSU, Ram, Stands (for case) & U channel Trim moldings to be imported in so it'll be another week of waiting for me but I'll post pics up here once I'm done
cool I've just ordered the RAM & PSU so hopefully should be with me by the end of next week, cheers :)
I will try to get pics of mine up it isnt anything special, but I am waiting on some cash to come in so I can get another 9800GTX+ and bigger PSU. All the cases I saw though look good nice work everyone.
does anyone know of a decent wiring extension guide on this forum or on the Internet? I might have to lengthen a few power cables and probably the front audio wires as well for them to fit. I'm new to the whole wiring things so any guidance would be appreciated.
I got another question (wonder when I'll tick you guys off with my silly questions) anyway, how do I go about removing the original 4 rubber stands That sit at the bottom of the case? are they just glued on? What's the easiest/cleanest way of removing these?
lol sounds easy enough
^ What feet are you putting on it?
I ordered the rubber ones from www.mnpctech.com These(http://www.mnpctech.com/CaseFeet.jpg) to be exact. Could you give me good advice as to the best way of mounting these? I've seem one example on this thread, but I'm still unsure about what size hole to drill, and how the screws will hold in place. Is There any advice any of you can give me?
There's really only one way to mount those feet. Drill holes where you want them, put the screws through, and tighten.
The hole you drill should be slightly larger than the screw itself, but not so big that the foot can flop around. It looks like you can take a screw out of the foot to compare with your drill bit. Mark your locations with a center punch (or a nail) before you start drilling to keep the bit from wandering and you should be good to go. The hardest part is making sure you can get to the nut on the inside to tighten it up.
Ok so wait, lemmi get this right, you're saying to put the screw in from the top? i.e. from inside the case and down to the feet? as apposed to the way they're in the picture? So does that mean the nut sits inside the rubber legs from underneath right? and the screws screw into them from ontop?
