ASUSTeK Adapter Pentium M = > Pentium 4

Hi im a bit of a newbie to this Pentium M overclocking, I managed to get hold of

Pentium M 755 for £70 new (Ebay can be good some times :) ! )
Asus P4P800se for £45 almost new
Asus CT-479 for £30 new

I know the 755 is only 400Mhz Fsb but as it has a 20x multiplyier (i think) i have high hopes - now i have some questions (apologies if there dumb ones)

1. Whats the best memory for this system, can I go for 2 gigs of bog standard PC3200 or do I need some better memory - OCZ, Corsair etc at Higher raitings - Im confused about all there memory bus to Processor bus speeds it seems like most people have the memory bus at greater then the Processor Bus surely this makes it no faster ?

2. It seems that 400mhz Dothans dont overclock so good, what do you think i can expect as my maximum stable overclock - basicaly what should i aim for, I also found that there is a way to convert a 400Mhz dothan to a 533Mhz dothan by grounding the bsel0 pin apparently (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=888963) unfortunatley the database seems to be down :(

I have 735 1.7GHz 400MHz dottie which does ~2.7GHz stable wit 1,49Vcore and air on Aopen 855GME-board. So not much difference there. According to many experiences 533 chips front side bus can very propably be overclocked considerably higher(over 200MHz) than 400 chips(under 190).

This creates a problem because you only have 1:1 or 2:3 memory dividers available on P4P or P4C -boards when fsb is set under 200MHz(this is prolly the same on P4GD1 -board). I would want to have at least 3:4 memory divider just like with 855GME-boards.

I have the CT-479 running in the p4p800 with p4p800-vm bios v1016.
Still have the problems with no lan and it wont startup after you shut down unless you remove the power but it did the same with a p4.
In the bios it shows the cpu as unlocked and the bios give multipliers from 8 up to 24 but No fsb or core volts options.

No CT-479 ... i´m using that good ole Aopen Lfs855GME -board 24/7, multiplier 16X, FSB 169, KHX BH-5 memories(256MB stick and 512MB stick) with 3:4 memory divider 2-2-2-5, @225MHz.

Trying to evaluate if there is any sense for me to move to the adapter and P4GD1-board...

Prolly those multipliers which are over the CPU default doesnt´t work... am i right?

However good news for the older P4P -owners... leads to beleave that official biosversions wit CT-479 support are prolly coming...

yes it wont allow multipliers over 16.
I currently have it set at 13x157.5 fsb 210 for the ram but at 2.5-3-3-6 as i cant run any higher than 2.65v at the moment
so the 1.6ghz is running at 2047ghz stock voltage.
1m super pie droped from 49s to 35s which is 4 seconds faster that my p4 2.8c runnigs at 3.7

I have found a problem with pci cards not working i could be just the lan cards as that is all i tested so far due to the on board not disabled as it should be the intel not 3com.

just have to hope asus do a good job of the p4p800 bios and quick.
I have a ocz ddr booster in the way for my other pc so i can give it a go in this one It has 2x xms 3500 v1.1 bh-5 chips in crying for some volts.

edit: just ran at 15x 153fsb ram at 210 2-3-3-7 for a time of 33s stock volts.

So it seems that on old p4p800 board you get to use that 3:4 memory divider... hmm intresting. Couple of reviews and user experiences have been that on P4P800 SE you don´t get to use that divider when fsb is under 200.

Can you lock the pci/agp to 33/66 on that board?

stock settings with the p4p800-vm bios 1016 in the p4p800

at 533 fsb it might show more memory options this is common with asus boards.

Yes, going to 133 mhz FSB in BIOS will give you 1:1 or 4:5 dividers.

as i cant set the fsb in the bios i wont get the divider options.

this wont matter at the moment anyway as i tried the p4p800 se bios in the p4p800 and now it wont post at all. :(

will have to hotflash it back to a p4p800-vm.

edit:
both my ic7-max3 and msi nforce2 boards wont hotflash the p4p800 bios chip. :(

awdflash gives checksum errors in the bios file and afudos says something about asf signiture missings. so unless i can find a way to overide i am stuffed and will have to look at a 2nd hand p4p800-vm board i found.

Yes i have that but i gave errors when programming the p4p bios in a nforce2.
will try it in a max3 now it's running again after my 6600gt just stopped working i have a ti4200 in it's place.
i must be on a run of bad luck.

on a good note the ddr booster arived today and i just orderd a p4p800-vm for £30 2nd hand.

edit: the max 3 gave the same errors when programming the p4pbios it's possible i have damged bios chip will have to wait for the p4p-vm to turn up.

Im thinking about a mobos. Which is the best? Now new supported P4GD1 ?

I got a question. A friend of mine has a 1,3 Dothan (Engineering sample) and he wonders if it will work on the adapter. He's worried because the adapter only supports cpu's +1,5 GHz.

The p4p800-vm arrived so i flashed the p4p800 bios back to normal and all is good.
I changed the fsb jumper on the ct-479 to 533 and lowerd the multi to 12 and now have the ram options of 266 and 333 so i can carry on testing.

Just a note that the p4p800vm + ct-479 + ocz ddr booster over 2.8v= Death to the mobo :( hope thats the 3rd time i am unlucky.

see post 108 for u wire mod on ct-479 worked for me i get 1.5 vcore.

Works nicely w/ 1.3G celeron-dothan so I dont see why it wouldn't w/ 1.3G dothan.

Has any one here with a P4P800-SE (or other P4C) had VCORE issues? My dothan Celeron M 350 (1.3Ghz) defaults to 1.568V with both the official and beta BIOS. I have to use the beta BIOS so I can "undervolt" it, however I can only drop it to 1.5V in the BIOS. Still it doesn't give me anywhere near default VCORE.

Actually the same happens with a C-M 340, detects 1.568V default. I think the real default is 1.356V. It looks the the board is completely ignoring the VID request. :confused:

also, any info how it compares with 2M dothan perfomance-wise (the same mhz, the same fsb)? i believe the difference is smaller with adapter than on 855 platform, because of the added bandwidth of dual-channel ram..

i'm interested of cm 360J, i just hope that the perfomance penalty aint too big..

that's excatly what I want to know too =)

I've only had the time to do a very quick OC test with the 1.3G Celery and it would run SPI1M at 2.12G all stock (def. voltage 1.24V - 2M dothan have a def. Vcore of 1.324V). The time was around 37.1 so not much slower than the 2M version. But obviously more benchmarks need to be run in order to see what the real performance difference between the 1M and 2M versions of the Dothan are.

yes it does BUT it requires useing P4C800-E BIOS (or some other special modded BIOS).
So before you put the Dothan and the adapter in make sure the board is running with the latest P4C800-E BIOS.
