Finaly got to run some benches. Flashed with Asus XT Bios on stock cooling with 92mm Tornado blowing directly on card. I lost my 3d01 reg number so I can't post a link to compare but here is the text file.

Has anyone found the best BIOS? Are there any differences between ASUS, ATI, Sapphire, Hercules, etc?
I've tested all 4...all 4 work...
The only one I saw any real improvement was with the Herc BIOS...I dunno why...but it seems to yield about 10-20MHz more on the core. This is according to ATiTool.
My 2nd one arrives Monday. I'll let you all know how she does... ;)

Well if yours went to 450 with ATI Tool, that's a HELL of a lot better than mine.
Mine will show white checkerboard artifacts in ATI Tool at 430-435, but the mem will go 410 before showing any glitches.
Using the "Find Max Core" option it won't make it past 425.
In real-world performance and gaming its 440/380.
Testing in 3DMark Nature shows the same clocks between CAT 3.9 & 4.2. I use 4.2 daily.
Games tested:
Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Need For Speed Underground
Neverwinter Nights
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
hmm interesting...
why do you guys think the different bioses make a difference?
i know hercules always went the further step to make things better...

I believe most performance differences caused by different bios are latency related, although I've heard reports of voltage differences, nothing confirmed on my end, just what I've read. However different latency does seem likely with the various memory found on these.
Most likely its cleaner coding and a little hotter juice.
OLD OLD Hercules really used to tweak their cards. They never followed reference design whatsoever. They were the US version of Canopus inho.
Makes sense as to why their BIOS may perform better then others.
now i just need to get off my bum and flash this new herc bios to my card...
well i got mine, put my waterblock on it and my ramsinks, i can get it to go 450:414 or so with very minimal artifacting if any.
i was looking at the temps in the overdrive tab and it says somewhere in the 50s, while rivatuner reads them in the 30s? i think rivatuner is more correct but i could be wrong.
Mine says mine idles at 55-56c...
Mine reads this hot with stock cooling...Quote:

min had 68°C at 412 core 3d2k03 - with cat4.2 .. temps differ with the cats. 20°C less with cat 3.9... anyway.. don't use that overdrive stuff it maxes out at 418 anyway ;)Quote:

Oh, ok.. 418 is my max as it is. Theres very few fans in my case since i watercool but i thought the temps were a bit hot. Im getting a water block for the pig so we will see what happens.
well i did some tweaking and some more overclocking, i figured i can run mine at 500:435 through some of the tests in 3dm2001 with a little bit of artifacting, while it artifacts greatly and sometimes locks in other tests, it is also very dependent on my temps, it seems that if i just start up my comp and everything is cold it can run much faster than after it heats up, im gonna have to get my chiller up and running to see what it can really do.
What about Nature?Quote:

That's the one I use for testing. 500 is insane for no vmod, mine locks at 475.
i believe i have run it throught nature at 500, ill try it again later, probably tomorrow morning.
*UPDATE
2nd card
Shim removed because core was below shim .003 mm (Micrometer tested)
Alpha PAL 6035 slapped on last night 8pm
Went out dancing for 7 hours w-GF...looped 3dmark 2k1 the whole time
Experimented with ATi Tool all day long. Am up to 455.4/390.6
Ate Mexican for lunch/dinner...went shopping for some new clothes...Looped 3Dmark 2k1 while out and about at 455.4/390.6. MAX TEMPS NOW ONLY 60c !!! Rah Rah Artic Silver 5!
Never crashed...ZERO artifacts!!!!!! :D :D : D
Pushing past 465/390 whith very few artifacts in ATi Tool...seems really stable...gonna burn in longer. ;)
This ones a keeper...

...You have a PM :toast:
Damn....I think I also have to try one of these! You infected me :-D
should this be a sticky?
i wouldn't mind it being a sticky, hint hint :)
anyway.. today my rma'd 9800pro 256mb ddr2 was due, so i was getting pretty excited when i got the message at work that the parcel had been delivered. so i raced home, tore the package open and what did i find? a phacking 128mb card... sapphire 9800 pro 128mb ddr - there's some that even these cards own and get the r360 core since the r350 is to run out, but i doubt that.
anyway.. i didn't open the box, since it's a farking 128mb card.. oh my... yet another week to wait.. so i mailed the shop and demanded a replacement, pronto. oh my oh my...
i... i see dumb people :(
i am about to go havoc.
and i was about to slap a p4 3.0 boxed cooler onto my 9800 but it wasn't to be - at least not yet.
bah just wanted to let you guys know... aaaah (meh is one p'ssd of mofo atm)
I don't think it needs to be a sticky, we have enough already...
This seems to be of enough interest, its staying on the 1st page by itself. And if someone wants to find it the search wouldn't have a problem tracking it down...
