Ok, so I played around with using a thermal pad and an aluminum shim and both failed big time causing the GPU to shut down. For now I would suggest folks stick to the stock cooler until the proper solution is released.

did you use thermal compound of each side of the shim?
was it flat enough?
how thick?
Yes, MX4 on both sides of thermal pad, believe it was .5 thick, some left over Koolance stuff. Definitely thick enough as I checked it before putting the block back on. The shim was a piece I cut out of a memory cooler and it looked pretty flat. I used Arctic Ceramique on it, again both sides and it was thick enough also. When i pulled the blcok off both times I see that the block was making good contact. I used just the screws without the backplate to make sure they would reach since the block was now further away.
not sure I would have used thermal compound on top and bottom of the pads. most thermal pads have a pressure rating too, it's possible you went way beyond the maximum pressure (it's very easy to put too much pressure with such a small surface).
as for the shim, it has to be very flat, if it's not it won't work.
Thanks for explaining this Gabe, now it's all clear:)
So I'm guessing you guys received them by now?:D
I have a quick question about APD2 - can it be installed in any direction? What I mean is, can you install the block so it will have in/outlets on top/bottom or left/right configuration? Can it be rotated/installed in any position on CPU?
Thermal pads: thanks for trying, now we know it doesn't work
Shim, that surprises me, but as SM said, if it aint' flat, it ain't workin'. Mounting pressure maybe? Dealing with two TIM joints isn't the easiest thing. Everything counts. A better compound would help too. But post mortem analysis is all in carefully observing the quality of these TIM's.
Anyways, the new BP should hopefully be coming soon, and that'll take you into the low 50's at load depending on voltage.. which by the way, are you at stock speed/voltage, or are you OC?
I am at max CC overclock, but stock voltages. If I can get another shim that I know is flat I will try it again. I may even try the thermal pad again. Stephen, how should I mount it with the thermal pad, TIM on the GPU or on the block or no TIM at all? Any thing I need to pay attention too if I try this again?
Thanks.
No TIM, the thermal pad is its own TIM. If you use the shim, then use TIM on both sides.
(Sorry to interject, just done this trick before.)
Don't use any compound if you try the thermal pad trick again. Also make sure that the pad isn't too compressible. if it is you might have the base plate hit the frame before there is enough pressure on the pad/gpu.
with the shim, make sure it's thick enough and flat! you'll need compound on both sides.
Yeah, I got the piece of copper, but I need to cut it using a Dremel so I don't warp it. I should have some time tomorrow to redo this and post back results.
Sounds good, make sure you deburr the edges of the shim.
Good luck
Yes it can.
However it's a large block and there may be positions in which it would interfere with components on your motherboard.
You lucky that the first shipment is coming by air otherwise you would have to 3-4 additional weeks :D
I am hoping it will get there today or tomorrow. We are expecting pumps on the 18th so we can start final assembly.
Stephen
Will you be selling any without the pumps? Some of us already have pumps, we just don't have much space in our machine for them.
It feels like this thread has announced the products eons ago...APD2 still not here...I'm still waiting  :wiggle:
Yes I think we will do that.
Looks like I'll be wanting one of the bare ones from the shipment. Will they come with the heatsink and LED module?
If we do sell it without the pump, it will be include everything but the pump, so yeah that would include heat sink, lighting, etc.
That would be perfect. Can't wait to get one here, my system is crying for a break from the heat.
Hello Stephen,
Seeing that you might sell without the pump, I will take 4x of these from the first shipment - I have about 6 or 7 DDC pumps, so yeah, no need for more..... Possible to reserve them for me?
No I'm sorry we have no pre-order list at this time.
