Quad socket board communitarian bulk buy

hi guys

i have a mail from the guy that sells the complete server on ebay, i have been talking to him over mail and he wrote to me today. here is what he said.

Good news. I got an approval from my boss.
After I told my boss what you guys do. He agree that we can do the PSU + motherboard, combo deal= $290 if you buy 5 sets at a time.
shipping will be $80 for each set. Any interest?
by the way. This motherboard can only use this special PSU and only supports Linux.

i know that we have a way to power the board via a normal single rail PSU, so thats not a problem.
i wont be buying this, as i think it is too expensive, eventhough its a good deal. i was hopeing that the PSU that fits this board would be cheaper.

do anyone know if windows server 2008 will work on this board? i have access to the "en_windows_server_2008_datacenter_enterprise_stan dard_x64" via my school, and i dont realy like linux :)

these boards are PCI-E and PCI, so...PCI

another guy over on HWC built a techstation for a tyan SSI-MEB (same board I have the intentions of getting), I think his parts cost for his "case" was about 40 bucks for plywood, spacers, some scrap steel, and some angle alu

there is a PCI slot, and a PCI express, any of them works if i am right.

@pawmadsen: according to what I read you could use something like virtualbox . TLB´ed cpu´s won´t help for virtualization AFAIK.

the problem might be that its only the size that simular to SSI MEB, everything else is upside down on this arima board, the pci slot are the wrong place, the board is turned 90 degrees. so you would have to remove the whole backend of any normal chassis to make it fit. and then the mounting holes are Probably not the same places as SSI MEB. so you have to drill new holes, and so on, i dont think it will be an easy task to make it fit inside a "normal" chassis, not to say you cant do it :) but its not plug and play in any premade ones. i plan on mounting my 4 boards on a piece of plywood and hide it some where away from my wife :)

oh i see. i have absolutely no idea if server 2008 works, but since you're not buying the board i guess it doesn't really matter. it does make me wonder how it can support linux only tho..

Ubuntu 10.04 has renewed my love of Linux. I think its at least worth a try.

Well using Windows might be little tricky on that board since it uses EFI not traditional bios. But it should be possible to install 2008 to machine that has EFI.

well, time will tell :) else i will have to just learn how to use linux. i guess its about time anyways :) last time i tried, i didnt even figure out how to install a program. :(

There's quite a few of us that are using Ubuntu based systems. All you have to do is ask. ;)

Ubuntu setup is very easy, you don't even have to go to a website.

let alone worry about "product activation" every time you update a hardware driver

i agree... gnome>KDE
if I had to choose between KDE and XFCE...i'd choose xfce anyday

i like gnome too but kde is somewhat of an easier transition for those new to linux

I found gnome way easier to get used to than KDE, and so have most people that i've convinced linux upon
