who needs turbo ;) nice work
Well, F5c was another bust, still same reboot/reset bug. Any OC over about 3.8 and you can boot up 1 time. All further reboots or any time you enter bios after that, the system hangs, blank screen. Back to F4m.
I'll never move from F4J lol. Performance is incredible, the pc has been 100% reliable and just a pleasure to work/bench and game on. Like a said many pages ago;they should keep their shyte beta bios program in-house and leave the community alone.
EDIT:
Hey I just noticed that there are pop-up tags on keywords. wtf is that all about?
I'm shoing it on the word g a m e
EDIT: now it's gone.
Alright I need a drink.
What voltages are you using for your overclock ReverendMaynard? Could you list the ones that are not set to Auto?? Thx
Do all of your guys boards restart multiple times at POST right after you save BIOS settings and reboot?? Mine does it usually like twice and the fan on my 4870x2 keeps firing up several times.
Every setting here is the same in the bios and are set and not on auto ( I get 1.376v after vdrop) except for the VRefs.

Would you guys mind if I asked a moderator to consolidate the thread title to include the DS4? Overclocking wise, I think they are all very closely related. They all share the same 12+2+2 power phase design, while all the boards below them do not. The only differing features seem to be SLI support, on-board sound, Firewire, and other features non-essential to overclocking.
So trying to tame the temperature beast - I will be adding water (single loop cpu only) to my ggbt extreme - 965 - sometime in the next week - pics follow.
Question - So since I am taking things apart - can I take off (leave off) all the cooling stuff on the north bridge?
I'm talking about the NB water block and the out the back slot like cooling fin thingy. Will this impact oc?
I tested and posted somewhere earlier in this thread my Extreme with the waterblock (not hooked up) and big ugly cooler out the back, on versus off. My IOH "NB" temps were 55-56C max load without the big ugly cooler and WB and 54C load with the big ugly cooler and WB (no water). So it makes ~1-2C difference. Idle was 47-48C either way. Even sticking a 120mm fan up against the big ugly cooler only decreased temps another 1C.
Taking it all off and putting a tricool spot fan hitting IOH...IOH temp now load 47-48C max. But whether 48C, 54C, 56C, overclocking it makes no difference whatsoever.
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R opinions vs the extreme???
Just looking to replace current setup but cost must be reasonable and 200.00 for a mobo is high but lower than all the other X58 mobos
I have never use Gigabyte before other than a video card. looking for 4gig stable on a i7 920
after reading all of the posts in this thread, I am not sure if I want to buy a motherboard yet. I bought my processor already, a 920, and plan on getting either the UD5 or Extreme. The Extreme seems to be really buggy and the fact that newegg and other manufacturers show it "out of stock" seem to help clue me in on that.
I plan on buying some G.Skill Pi Black 3X1GB DDR3 2000 RAM from newegg for 199, but am still hesitant on getting a Gigabyte X58-UD5. What do you guys think? I've never had problems with Gigabyte as I have had other motherboard manufacturers. Should I stick to Gigabyte or get something else?
All the X58 motherboards will have their quirks at this point in time. Comparatively, Gigabyte seems to have fewer than most.
A good portion of the bugs are unfortunately not caused by the board itself.
Yukon, you're going with the Intel board?
hi
nice bit of kit steve ro
wish i could get 3 x 120 rad in my case had to go for 120 x 2 and 120 x 1
my north bride gets to 55 c with sidefans push air in wthout the fans nearly 64 c
i agree with burningarve about the bois too may
i am on the 5a with no prblems @ 200 x 20 (21 turbo enblaed)
with watercooling my idle temp are 40 load 69
are other pealpe finding same temps
i am using bigTM to control pump & fans (very good for quiet system)
Can we disable the CPU overcurrent protection on UD5?
BIOS F5d passed the same settings as F5b and F5c for me with HT off @ 20x200. LinX x 20 with 'All' RAM passed. Prime blending now. I haven't noticed any difference compared to F5c yet.
By the way, any quick tips on stability at 19x211? I set my RAM timings to SPD and 'Standard'. I even tried the lowest memory multiplier and corresponding Uncore multiplier to maintain a 2:1 ratio. The system immediately gets the infinite loop reboots if I try to boot at 19x211. I heard I could potentially get lower volts with the lower multi but I can't even get into the BIOS with it. I have turbo (always disabled) and HT disabled as well. Could it just be the fact that I'm trying to get 211mhz and there are other settings I need to change in the BIOS for stability at such a high BCLK?
does anybody have the lan drivers for the x58xtreme? thanks
if you wanna watercool the nb

On my x58 ud5, Vista sleep mode is broken if and only if HT is disabled. I need to know if there is something wrong with my particular board, or, is this a design flaw and all boards fail. I would be grateful if someone could take 30 seconds to put there board into sleep mode and then see if there is a malfunction upon resume attempt. The failure is that upon resume, the system hangs with a blank screen. If HT is enabled, then SM works correctly. This is a 100% repeatable bug. Be sure that suspend type is S3 in bios (S3 is default).
I am shopping a new x58 board and think I want to get the ex58-ud5.. but is it worth the extra few bux to get the extreme?? I am going to be ocing my 920 to 3.8 or 4ghz on air with 6gb of mem.. I know the chip is willing as it does this fine on my current board, but the board has other issues with memory larger than 3gb configs.. so anyways.. is the extreme worth it?
I dont know how my cpu can be this good without HT but anything over 3.99 with HT is borked. :shakes:
I just changed from XP 32 bit to windows 7 64bit and like it, so going to keep the beta and buy 7 as soon as out. Right now I have OCZ 3x1gb and Corsair dom 3x1 gb. I can run 6x1gb, but was not stable at 1T, prime failed immediately at previous settings + bumping up vcore, vtt, dram. Default said 2T, which did not try yet.
Two questions. To those using 3x2gb, which I am considering gettings, can you run at 1T without issue?
And to those using all 6 slots (probably those doing 12gb) are you having to use 2T?
Probably not that much difference in speed, but i am thinking it will be easier to get 3x2gb stable at lower settings than 6x1gb, unless 2 T makes huge difference, which I have not tried yet.
how easy is it to OC this board and what are the main issues with it? im in a toss up between this and the ASUS P6T delux. im wondering if the extra £15 for the ASUS one is really worth it.
what are the CS like in both manifacturer's?
think Im going to try an f5 and see if I can break 4ghz with HT
Don't think the NB needs watercooling mate, I still use the Antec spotcool to blow fresh air over the rams and the NB... will report later with temps
http://users.telenet.be/OAP2/swiftech.JPG
I know on my eclipse the motherboard value was something else much cooler than the NB.. the NB ran about 57c idle. anyways.. I see the extreme has a HUGE cooling apparatus if you go air only.. so I am betting the NB temps will be pretty good on air. So I'll be picking that one up I guess since I like to give my local shop the business for the new mobo. Thanks for the info RM! This thread appears to have all I will need to get things tweaked initially. That's another reason I want to go with the EX58, because of the strong following here. :)
Leeghoofd - thanks! the extreme version has a water block on the NB already, but is also has some additional cooling parts you can put on if you're going air only.. so I will use those with a spotcool. cheers!
Can you install a PCI-E X-Fi sound card in the x4 slot after installing the extra Northbridge cooling on the EX58-Extreme? I don't have any small PCI-E cards to test and haven't tried installing the additional NB heatsink yet either since others had reported it not making much difference in temps.
Yeah, I was just looking at that...
http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.ph...61&postcount=2
I have pci-e raid and sound to put on with my two video cards, so that's a no go. unless you can find a SUPER short x-fi.. Oh well, I guess I will order the UD5 from the egg.
Keep in mind that if you install a PCI-E card into the bottom x16 slot that it will switch PEG-2 and PEG-3 to x8/x8 mode so your second video card will be running in x8 mode instead of x16. I don't know if that will make much difference though. I think there is a thread going on here in this forum discussing the performance differences between x8 and x16.
Oh really? even if it's a 1x card?? geez.. my eclipse seemed to handle that fine, I have the x-fi in pci-e slot #3 and in everest it shows the lanes being 16x 16x 1x ... welllll, maybe I should think about the Asus then.. the workstation one... hrm. wait, doesn't x58 have 36 lanes to use total? so it should be able to run two 16x video cards at 16x with 4 lanes left over.. ??
edit: the manual says if pci-e slot 3 is populated with a "graphics card" that it will run in 8x mode... but what about if a 1x device is in it?
all I know is that when I have triple sli enabled its 16-8-8 shown in gpu-z
On a different not, bios F5C is allowing me to push my HT settings. I was struggling to get 3.99ghz with 1.45vcore + :shakes: now with a load cpu-z says 1.344 load 1.36 idle with considerably less set in bios (1.375)
Stasio, you should post the change log image you did on different forum
I think the workstation model is populated with PCI-x lanes.
In due time my friend ;)
Has anyone tested the EX58-Extreme to see how much it undervolts? I have the vCore set in the BIOS to 1.375v as well but CPU-Z is showing my core voltage under load in LinX at 1.312-1.328 V instead whereas his is at 1.344v load. I am clocked just slightly lower though at 20x195 (3.9Ghz). I have LLC enabled in the BIOS.
anyone tried a pci-e 1x riser on the 1x slot? this board would be ideal for me if that slot was usable... the whole 16x 8x 8x would not be too horrible I think until I go quad SLI or something.. oh well!
yeah, I am looking at some other reviews and it would appear running those lanes at 8x doesn't hinder performance at all.. so I guess I am back in business here... and if that riser trick works also, heck I can go tri-sli with both my pci-e 1x devices also.
I am thinking with this and putting the short pci slot cover on my raid card I might be able to use the 1x slot... maaaaaaybe.. if not, it's not the end of the world, but it would be cool to be able to use that slot if possible..
edit: the riser should be able to get the card high enough, I think, but getting the slot cover to fit right might require some monkeying around. ;)
Board is very easy to OC mate, and works fine here up to 211Bclck (my rams cap out at 1688mhz) and you get one multi for free :p:
Only thing till now is that when my board goes into hibernation it doesn't repost... could be my board or hardware setup... but I don't use that feature anyway... no mater which of the boards you choose it will give you a nice fast and stable OC..
Weirdest thing, just turned it on. Been fine for weeks, got half way through loading windows and it restarted. Went into a reboot loop, turned off and it came up with corrupted bios recovery. I flashed the bios back to F4J from F2 and it needed a cmos reset before it would start. Put the settings back in and its fine again. What would cause that?
Bobblylite, so F5c is allowing the same OC with lower Vcore?
Hi Guys,
Just got my board and set it up yesterday evening along with watercooling. I have the UD5, just trying to get a consensus on which is the best bios. Also, under water I am getting about 37-40 degrees C idle using a EK supreme block, ek supreme 4870 block, 120.3 thermochill rad with three fans and using feser. Is this about right, not sure if it needs to be reseated or not?
Cheers,
Blue
I had the worst time OCing with HT enabled on F4J, tryed to get just a 10x linX run wasnt possible even at 1.475vcore 200x20 or 190x21 now Im stable with considerably less vcore.
Also running the ram at cas 7 which wasnt possible before on the x8 multi with over 180bclk
here is the changelog btw
http://www.yourpicbox.com/images/oEuMIwLbl2544.gif
Damn, I can't see the changelog.. do you have a link to it?
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6...eloggx9.th.gif
that work for ya?
Hi i am running 5a bios with no problems @ 21 x 200 turbo on HT off
but will flash to 5d tonight
i have very smiliar setup watercooling wise and my temps are 38 to 41 idle.
a also reseated the supreme and change the orientation of the blockwith the inlet on the right hand side
how are your northbridge temps
i am think about removing the blue cover off it and put small fan on top or watercooling with a MIPS north & south bridge full cover but then would have to change cooling on the morfits
how do you read the NB temp? everest ultimate only shows the motherboard temp and AUX temp
The three temps in HW Monitor all go down together when I add a spot fan to the NB since they are connected with the stock motherboard cooling.
Thanks for the reply. I'll flash tonight. So, the watercooling sounds about right, then? I guess I'll only see the difference when I try pushing it. I haven't really put an OS on as yet as I had a few problems with it last night. I'm planning to put an OS on it tonight and start playing, so, I'll let you know.
Cheers,
Blue
By the way, what's the setting to turn the throttling off called on the UD5? Is it CPU Thermal Monitor?
Cheers,
Blue
hi
i moniter northbridge, mem & water temps with a thermal sensors connected to my bigT balancer
Helo
I do not know what to choose: help:)

OCZ Gold Edition 6144MB 1600Mhz cl8 KIT
What would be best for the plate?
What do you suggest?
Which are best for overclocking?
thanks:yepp:
Nice! So you just removed that top waterblock piece from the NB or are you saying you don't have anything at all sitting on the NB?
What about the voltage regulators on this board? I know that's a real hot spot on the DFI X58 board that people have been worrying about to get temps down.
I think he means just the WB top, you'd have to take off the whole assembly to take off the actual block.
Is anyone running SLI on this board? I can't seem to enable SLI on my GTX 295's, not sure if it's a driver problem or board needs a bios update.
Will someone please post the safest BIOS settings that can boot a Gigabyte UD5 with i7-920 to 210 BCLK? I have tried x36 QPI, x12 Uncore, x6 memory, 1.4v QPI, 1.4v Core, 1.66v DRAM and still no joy even at 18x210. At 19x200 non turbo my chip needs 1.152v load (1.1875v Core and 1.2750v QPI in bios) to be stable with HT off and 1.1874v load (1.21875v bios), still with 1.2750v QPI, for HT stability.
I just received mine last night, got it all put together, loaded windows, got all the drivers installed and went about working on some of the other stuff I had just got in and after about 2 hours it did this same thing. It went into a reboot loop that I can't get it out of save for holding the power button down or shutting down the power supply. The only problem is, I can't get mine out of it. I've pulled the battery, reset the CMOS....unhooked everything, removed the video cards, swapped my ram around, tried booting with single and dual channel... nothing so far has gotten it out of this loop. It goes all the way to 88 on the post codes(which i suppose looks like 8B) Anyone have any idea what this is or did i get a bad board? It never gets to the point where it shows video.
BTW, this is what i have.
Gigabyte EX58-UD5
Core I7 920 with a noctua nh12
3 x 2 gigs of OCZ Gold 8-8-8-24 @1600
3 sapphire 4850 video cards
2 WD 320 gig hard drives in a raid 1
Coolermaster Real Pro Power 1000 watt ps and stacker 830 evolution case.
I assume the power supply is good because it was working yesterday morning on the phenom 9950, M3A79-T, 4 gig of Corsair dominator and 2 sapphire 4850 video cards. I am going to try the 600 watt power supply i have(wifes computer) with just one video card and see if that's it later. The power connections are all good, and have been checked and rechecked. I have been reading the newegg reviews this morning(I'm in Japan) and it seems that at least 3 of the reviews complain of this very problem. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something stupid that I missed that is different with this motherboard. I appreciate the help.
try the 181.20 drivers... you need to have 180 series drivers just to be able to enable two or three card SLI on x58.. but a single GTX295 shouldn't apply to that rule.. regardless, the 181.20s are the new drivers which support the GTX295 so I would think you would have to use those anyways to enable all the features on that card.
still pushing mine, seemed rock solid in every bench so far.
well cant boot to an XP cd with a IDE or SATA dvd-drive Dont know if its this bios or what
