its quite possible your chip can just not do 4.0 gig.........These quads are not like the c2d's, great chips do 4.0, good chips do 3.6, bad chips do less......

My chip is sort of a gem, running it 8x400 at stock volts (vid 1.225) across the board.....Unfortunately I can not keep it cool enough with my current equipment to push it further, and expect any longevity out of it. 8x450 for 3.6is a breeze save for temps but 9x450 is way to much heat for my taste.....

Most people on air only get 3.6 with the best air solutions, so if your on air that may be your problem, On water 4.0 might be attainable depending on your setup......

This might be caused by attempting to write to the BIOS with unstable settings. You should avoid doing that and I'd know, I used to do beta testing for Merlin. Older boards would have knocked out your bios chip. If you're uncertain of stability, which occurs rather often, you should perhaps first revert to factory settings and save your current OC in a profile.
And don't use profiles when you updated or downgraded your bios version. It doesn't work very well either.

Does anyone have an idea where to find a spare bios chip? Or is our bios chip not socketed?
Those chips are pretty mandatory when using modded bios binaries.

My Q6600 runs Ghz on 1.42Vcore , and 4.2Ghz on only 1.45Vcore ...
So I would doubt it becuase I already did a 4.2Ghz SuperPi bench with all AUTO (yes I know it's bad, but only that would boot... :p: ).

Super PI at 4.2g means just that you can do a pi at 4.2g, It DOES NOT mean your cpu can do 24/7 stable @ 4.2g............................

I would attempt to boot at your auto settings again and use every utility possible to get the settings used by auto, etc voltages, timings, ram speed, and whatever other settings then try to weed out what settings allowed you to get there..........

Or you can do it the process of elimination way, downclock cpu with multi's downclock ram, find max stable fsb of mobo, after that find max stable speed of cpu PI is not gonna tell you if your stable, most who can pass PI can not run 3d apps or prime, lastly throw the ram into equasion once you found the max stable mobo fsb and cpu clock, eachtime you add something to the equasion you will likely have to downclock a tad.................

funny how you say most who can pass PI can not run 3d apps or prime as I'm totally opposite. I can prime all day, run any program I want all day and my machine runs great but if I try PI at anything above 1m superpi will crash.

Then you would appear to have a memory issue or need to play with cpu pll or one of the NB settings ;) Id say your not 100% dialed in on the sweetspot of your ram or the chipset or the high FSB.....go check the prime stable threads, there are lots and lots that pass PI fine at insane speeds, Prime and 3d apps snap them back into reality in what the chips able to do 24/7 however

Just out of curiosity, slap a divider on your ram and downclock it and try something higher you failed PI at before like 8M If it still fails look to the chipset as the cause.....and tweak the voltage a little, could possibly be cpu pll volts also if its a GO chip.

I totally understand what you mean, but if you would think that my chip does 4Ghz on only 1.42Vcore, then I (!) know for sure it can be 24/7 stable on 4.2Ghz ...
For 24/7 use I go till 1.55Vcore, and for now I don't now wich speed I can get on that Vcore, but I know for 95% sure it's higher then 4.2Ghz though ;) .

That's what I've tried, I could get till 470 x 7 on all AUTO settings... This was Prime95 stable for 5-6 hours, but when I tried 475 x 7 it would fail within 2 min...
So I know for sure there's is something small that has to be tweaked a little, but what can I do if I don't can read out what the mobo AUTO picks for himself :p: .


BTW, I'm now on 3.8Ghz with 1.36Vcore and he's only 40°C stressed, with a ambient of 18°C, so temps are no problem... Even NB is 37°C stressed with 1.65V right now...

475 is pushing it with a quad, from what ive read 450 is tough for some on this particular board, it has a FSB wall with quads. Use a higher multi. CPU PLL Volts and NB is likely your culprit, FYI with auto it over volts both NB voltage adjustment and a few other things. That would be a place to start. Its real simple what auto picks, set the settings that booted for you in auto, reboot, go back in bios, check your hardware manager for voltages. Write them down, then manually set them, I can tell you this much, what you set them at and what they read in hardware monitor are 2 totally seperate things. Just keep adjusting them till you match them.

Wish i had your temps, I only need 1.325 for 3.6g but under load i'm right on the line damn near 70C, need to upgrade my water cooling before i can use it. Still on air.

I 2nd this statement. At 3.8 Ghz (or above) I can game, bench for quite some time. In fact I haven't had a crash yet but when I try to prime the system crashes almost instantly. Usually it crashes before I set a SPPrime instance to every core. Not even an increase in vcore by a whole lot helps. I just cannot get it stable above 3.7ghz.

I could run 3.6 ghz at stock vcore while I need 1.41v vcore for 3.7 ghz. But even 1.6v makes one bit of difference and this is without attempting a high FSB (450+).
I'll post my bios settings when I'm back home. I'm at work now.

Have anyone noticed that when changing usb legacy support to auto from enabled
that pc hangs before loading windows and then it cannot boot after restart and need cmos?

Sounds like it's a board thing. I would relax the board timings and try again. Disable transaction booster and set to 2-3 just to see if it is stable.

I tried the same voltages you guys gave me but instead off 9 x 468 I tried 9 x 445. And it booted into Vista; I could run everything, but Prime95 freezed the system after 2 min of stressing...

I'm 1-4 stable. No crashes, etc. Since those are the "hardest" to pass then I'd consider myself good to go. I don't really care about superpi as it seems it's really only used as a benchmark.

Then you can worry about tightening the board latency and getting better clock for clock performance out of it. At least that's how I got to the higher FSB.

Set Relax level to 3 with a tad more northbridge voltage, no cigar. It crashes very soon in the same way at 1.41v to 1.47v. Didn't try higher as I'm never going to run it like that.

I can boot and work with my Quad at 475 FSB even with Performance level 8 (Disabled 0) but it requires some high voltage on the northbridge... Here a screen I took lately :

I think I was using 1,72V on the northbridge to acheive that and it wasn't stable (My PC froze after like 15 mins of regular chatting or internet usage)

About the ram, indeed they are Crucial Ballistix, I wanted to make sure it wasn't them holding me back, so realy relax timings with relative high VDimm would exclude that :) .

just a quick q. would it be worth constructing a back plate from plexi glass for the waterblock (d-tek fuzion)? i notice that the motherboard bows a bit. also, would it help to lap the waterblock after ive already lapped the cpu?

i know these seem like stupid questions where the answer is yes, but i want some real world experience telling me yes and what i could possibly expect.

For me it made a difference of 3-4°C on load with my quad...
I lapped the Fusion till grit 2000 and then polished it with thoothpaste and ketchup.

Yeah that works :p: . Also I applied a washer between the 2 black plastic holders of the Fusion, so there's no more leakage from intake to outtake without going trough the base... Also the nozzle's are good to use :) .

But I don't have them :( . Also my Q6600 is NOT lapped.

Yes to the backplate. I used one from a Zalmon 9500. Before I had 7C spread between cores. Now all cores have less than a 2C difference and are usually 1C apart. :) Conventional wisdom is don't lap the D-Tek Fuzion. It was designed with a bow on purpose and that helps provide lower temps. I've read a few reports from people that say lapping helped. That one is a coin toss. I'd use nozzles without lapping.

Edit: You don't have to make a back plate. You can always buy one of these...

Don't lap the waterblock. It's flat. If anything get the nozzle kit.

As for a backplate, you can get the D-Tek pro mount kit which comes with a backplate or I've heard that you can also use a thermalright 775 backplate. I have the Pro Mount kit myself and love it.

Setting stuff to auto and jacking up the fsb will do that. ooh, well. :rolleyes:

its not shiny and has a few scratches so a light lapping i think is in order

and as far as making a back plate vs buying/ordering one my logic behind that is
making one does not cost me anything and it will take an hour tops to fabricate vs the few day wait for one to come in. i am not a patient person by any means.

It looks respectable depending on settings, but you'll have to at least post some settings in order for it to mean anything.

You can adjust TRD by setting the "Transaction Booster" settings in "Exteme Tweaker" menu in bios.

There you are able to set "TB" to "enabled" and choose a "boost level" from 0-7(0-3 some biosversions?) or to set "TB" to "disabled" and choose a "relax level" from 0-7(0-3 some biosversions).

"TB enabled" or "disabled" and each with "level 0" is stock TRD of the ram.

"TB enabled" "boost level 1" is stock TRD-1 (for example stock TRD is 7, then it is "7-1=6", lower is faster/6 is faster than 7).
"TB enabled" "boost level 2" is stock TRD-2 (7-2=5, stock TRD7) and so on...

"TB disabled" "relax level 1" is stock TRD+1 (7+1=1, stock TRD7, higher is slower/8 is slower than 7).
"TB disabled" "relax level 2" is stock TRD+2 (7+2=9, stock TRD7) and so on...

I have mine 8400 at 4.3GHz with 1.38v and I idle at .....
Core1 28c ...full load 57c
Core2 30c ...full load 55c

others will disagree I'm sure, but I think the NB and SB could be a little cooler at idle

Now I run allmost the whole day with Prime95 on + gaming on the following:

NB : 1.51 V
FSB : 1.46 V
SB : 1.075 V

Stability can be compromised based on NB temps but not voltages IMO, those pushing close to 47C on NB temps are very very close to the edge.

I think your going to find that this board just has a wall somewhere after 450 fsb with quads that induces instability.

I hit a wall with a celeron c2 rather low, 374 was max, would not do 375 even with the lowest multi. Yet 3.0g was stable....I'd like to say its bios related.

Yes it can! My 450x8 are only stable with NB 1,25V and VFSB 1,20V. Higher NB or VFSB voltage and system becomes unstable after long testtime.

Can you increase the dram frequency from 1066 to 1100MHz - 1200MHz without having to OC the E8400 past 3.6GHz?

I hope it's a BIOS problem. I know I'm on the P5E instead off the Maximus, but the P5E thread is dead and the P5E with the Maximus is almost the same.
About the FSB wall, don't think I got one so low. I did a SuperPi 1M run on 468 x 9 with everything AUTO (back then :p: ). And it was running 100% good...

Also I did test the max FSB with all AUTO settings, and I could get 470 x 7 stable. Don't ask me what I can achieve when I set the voltages myself, but I think it can be higher then 470 ...

Anyway, I'm going to test a little more, and keep hoping for a better BIOS :yepp: .

8x450 on the 333 strap = 1081MHz
400 strap = 1199MHz

8.5x424 on the 400 strap = 1130MHz

3.6Ghz keeps failing OCCT after couple mins. And whenever I set Transaction Booster to Disable or Enable, system won't boot. This is my settings for 3.5 OCCT stable so suggestions for 3.6Ghz please. :p:

up your CPU Volts a tad and see if it takes longer to crap out.
are you running 4x1GB sticks?
you can also drop clock twister to moderate to see if its the ram, but I doubt that it is at the speed your running it.

I had better luck on the 8 multi with my quad 8x450 was a really nice clock for me. I had a hard time with the 9 multi to get 3.6GHz stable

1,75PLL is quiet a lot for 24/7. I would try to not to come above 1,70V for PLL. I am using "Auto" for PLL and it`s 1,68V in biosmonitor at 450x8 and the board already gives to much at "Auto".

btw, I got a update, he gave a Prime95 error after 36 min on 434 x 9 with PLL on 1.56 and NB on 1.51, I upped it till 1.58 for PLL and 1.53 for NB, and now I'm still stable after 2 hours.

I must say, that sometimes WLM or other programs freeze, so I think it needs a BIT more V.

Thanks, I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. I've tried a few settings and still couldn't get anything higher then 1066MHz at a 9x multi.

Where's our new BIOS ASUS? With Nehalem coming out this year, means a major rework on the motherboard side. If ASUS leaves us Maximus Formula patrons hi and dry without a new BIOS by then, then I will for sure consider their competitor for future purchases.

It still fails regardless of how much voltage I put on Vcore. I tried 8x450 as well and the same thing happened. I thought with the higher multi then it's easier than high FSB since you gotto OC your RAM like crazy and I doubt I can do that with 4x1GB sticks. I might try with the 333 strap and see if it can help. :(

The 8xxx cpus are not clocking that well on any mb are they?

Hey guys, I just upgrade my P35 platinum which ran stable at 3.2G on my Q6600 to this Formula Maximus and I cant even get it to run stable at 3.0G.

My sig has my new system specs. Maybe I can get some suggestions on what to run the bios at.

Is this board better than my P35 platinum for OCing ?

Remember that the Maximus over-volts the DRAM by 0.12v's. Set it .12v's lower in the BIOS, than what your DRAM recomends for it's operational voltage.

My problem is, my DRAM is rated at 1.8v's, but the Maximus is putting 1.92v's on them.
There currently is a BIOS limitation issue with the Maximus that won't let you set the voltage lower than 1.8v's.
This makes it hard to use some of the newer low voltage DRAM that is out like my Corsair XMS2.
I hope ASUS is working on it.... It couldn't take too much programming to allow for us to use lower voltages on our DRAM.
Mabey the next release will just fix the DRAM overvolt problem, and I could really get my 1.80v's as set in the BIOS? :up:

Just over 1 hour of Prime95 at 3.8GHz using the above BIOS settings. Note the 1.92v's reading on my DIMM! :(

now testing with 1.432 volts. the difference of .05 volts was 10c on the hottest cores! same speed as in my sig, just different volts as ive adjusted things elsewhere for stability's sake. occt is going to run for an hour on cpu test only.

Finally found time to play with my new E8400. I started by finding a high fsb. Therefore I used the settings of aonther member. 500FSB is stable. I run the CPU at safe settings (6 x 500) with auto-voltage on the CPU. For some reason this auto-setting puts the voltage at 1.432 (CPU-Z) isn't this a bit high???

When I raise the multiplier to 8 (so the CPU runs at 4GHz) and the system is not stable, can I be sure that the problem is the CPU (and voltage) because everything is stable at 6 x 500?

Last question. My NB temp is stressed 50 and Idle around 45. Is this acceptable?

I have 4 of these and I just noticed that 2 are double bank (with 2 rows of Led's) and 2 are single bank (with 1 row of Led's). Also that one pair run at 1.8v and 2.0v and the other pair run at 1.8v and 2.2v

Is this normal, why would they ship different modules for the same kits ?

Planing to change my X38 Quad GT for this board. I having a E8500, will that cpu work on this mobo ? Any chance to gain fsb around 550+ ??

It harder to get highest fsb with this mobo than your Quad GT.
The only reason to go to that mobo is if your Abit cannot work with
Ballistix at 600+MHz.

That voltage is way to high for 3.0GHz
Your NB load temps are fine and aslong as your are stable the idle temp.. well not the best I have seen should be ok

Anyone got 8gb ram running well on this board?

I got a very weird issue here, ever since I installed the E8500 ( it is now sold), my Ballistix PC8500 and G.SKill 8000CL5 4GBPQ, both cant run high speed. for example my Ballistix used to run stable on this board with 1130 5-5-4-9 @ 1.90v ( bios set)/ 1200 5-5-5-12 @ 1.98 ( bios set). Then After I was priming my E8500 for like 14 hours small ffts it was stable so I ran 3dmark06 and I got a instant freeze.. or Screen goes black or Pink lol. I was sure it was the mem, but what the heck, So I did HCI memtest , it keeps throwing errors, so I decided to put in my G.skill 8000 2x2GB( never really tested this kit before tho), but I cant even run @ 1040 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1?? at this point I thought it cant be the mem goes bad both sets. So I sticked my Ballistix @ the P5K deluxe run 1200mhz 5-5-5-12 @ Performance lvl 5 with 2.05v... and HCI memtest did 800% coverage without 1 single error... where as on the maximus it would keep throwing errors within secs. Whats going on? Did my memcontroller went flaky or my BIOS is corrupted?, it used to be stable ......

*edit I reflashed like 3 times already to 0903 and 0907 all didnt helped. ( CMOS clear button before every flash), or should I remove the battery aswell , for a "proper" CMOS clear?

The G.SKill uses Elpida chips if I thought... So +1000Mhz on CL5 is nice ;) .

And about the Crucial ram, if you look on the Asus forum there are only problems with Crucial ram and this mobo so be patient and wait for a good bios :) .

Uhmm , they were rock stable as I stated on the maximus , and few hours ago I tested on the Deluxe and it was stable, this isnt a BIOS version issue....

I set my mem voltage to 2.2v for my ballistix PC8500 and its showing 2.7v in Everest.

whats up with that ?

Board overvolts vdimm but 2.20v in bios shouldnt be 2.7 real... Have you touched the dimms while running prime/orthos? Mine run rather hot even at 2.15vdimm with 2x92mm fans over them.

samething for me, the thing is I can't set it lower than v2.20, it won't boot hang at DET Dram. So I guess the Ballistix have to live with v2.27 for 24/7. Yes and the heatsink feel really hot when you touches

You sold your Wolfdale???

Did you try both white and blue slots and see if it errors out?
Also try different straps to eliminate a divider issue.
I hope you dont have to RMA your board that would be a shame but I know you want a new board so are you sure you didnt do this on purpose lol ;)

How does the ram do when everything set to stock speed and volts?
maybe the board is just pissed cause you put the quad back in, seriously tho try the stock test and see what happens

Hey m8, well it only will run like 1000mhz 5-5-5-15, but suddently it cant run at 1130 5-5-4-9 and 1200mhz , so I put the ballistix into my P5K deluxe 2day, and 1200mhz performance lvl 5 @5-5-5-12 with just 2.05v, 800 % coverage HCI memtest. whereas it fails within 40% @ the maximus, I just dont get this man doesnt make sense at all lol, yea m8 I sold the E8500, with no money loss, I missed my 2 extra cores. I tried also different straps and so on.

Same goes for my G.skills, I havent tested this kit yet on the P5k deluxe, but I have yet to see that any kit cant do 1051mhz 5-5-5-15 with 2.1v..... I think either my BIOS is corrupted in some way ( even clear cmos / reflash wont help), or my memory controller became flakey:(.

Well i stick in my old Q6600 g0 from my P5K deluxe and ques what I upped vcore 1.50v+ still prime would load 99%, where as the newer g0, wont load pass 1.40vcore, However I stack in that newer g0 into my P5K deluxe, there I also set vcore 1.50v+ and there it will load 99%..... So it was only on this particular board, really cant explain that lol:D

Ya I'm really not liking this board :down: and might pop my P35 platinum back in. It ran flawless at 3.0-3.4 on air, and now I have a kick ass water system and can't even use it with this Formula

I have the same issue for some time and i know at least 3 friends of mine with the same problem with this board. One thing we have in comum is a 0.45nm CPU, me and my friends have QX9650 and you a E8500...:confused:

Tryed everything, playing around for 3 weeks with diferent settings and the black/green/purple/red screen is random, can be without any issue for 2,3 or 4 days, sometimes in a matter of hours...:mad:

I have a P5E3 Dlx on my desk ready to test and replace my Formula...

Mc2k, would you say the P5K (or in my case a Blitz Formula) is a better board than the Maximus Formula? How does the FSB overclock on your P5K compare to you Maximus?

At this point, I think my RAM started to crap out when I reach 3.6Ghz (both 9x400 or 8x450) or above. The problem is I'm still running 4x1GB Crucial Ballistix so I think I might switch to 2x2GB instead. I don't wanna give up the LED on the RAM though and that's one thing keep holding me off from switching to another RAM. :D Any recommendations for a best set of 2x2GB?

Hmmmm one more attempt, since you mention it may be the crucial causing the problem, even when I'm trying to run them stock. I have a box of

OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 / 800MHz / Gold Edition / 8GB Quad Kit (4x2GB)

that I will try to run right now first and see if that changes anything. Will post results.

Well this blows, its seems so far the prob may be the crucial RAM, my OCz is running Prime at 3.6 right now for the last 20 minutes at 1.48v on the CPU and 2.0 on the ram

I took the 2 wd raptor 150gigs out of my pc, did a fresh 100% format. Disable Jmicron and it still comes up with the "Cannot Find Master IDE HDD" did i miss something? Going to flash to 907 tonight. But anything else i can do to fix it. It is a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500gb hdd atm.

Hey m8 I am "glad" that I am not the only one getting this, this IS right after I popped in the E8500, and test it for 4 days, and after I thought I was done, I wanted to do some 3dmark, and what the heck the mobo suddently cant handle high ram clocks..... even now the E8500 is sold and popped back my Q6600 in....and I confirmed yesterday on the Deluxe they are doing just fine like they were doing on the maximus a week ago...this board is really getting annoying, first the prime issue I got with 1 of my Q6600 g0 while the other got no prob. However that cpu works flawless on the delux so...
