The Official Dual Core Opteron Overclocking Thread

Actually I did run my previous Venice IHS-less (that's why I had to order a new retention bracket). I almost crushed my Opteron core because the retention bracket was uneven on the mb. I'm kinda afraid to retry it.

After that experience, I reinstalled the IHS on the Venice (a chip I know well, having it for months) to check what kind of temp difference I could expect with the reapplied IHS. I got good temps, 2-3 degrees higher than IHS-less at most.

I expected the same with the Opty. I guess I was wrong :(

My only hope is a great difference between retail cooler and XP-90, which I doubt.

Very nice! I could only do that on my vpmw when I kept the temps below 40C. Otherwise, I need an additional 0.1v to keep it stable a higher temps like 50C. Very temp sensitive.

No intel equipment, no time/space for another computer. I'm gonna build a conroe rig at the end of summer.

these VPMW's are going for at least $500 bucks on ebay. How stupid can these people be? I hope I didn't offend anyone here...teee heeee

I thought the whole purpose of overclocking was to buy the cheapest hardware possible and make it run at or faster than the fastest and most expensive out there. I guess the spirit is lost and everyone buying high end stuff.

Very enigmatic / PITA (frustrating) processor (BATCH 574)
300x9 @ 1.35Vcore
10x(anything over 260) = NO GO @ anyVcore, same for any divider combo. :brick:
Been playing w/ it for a week w/ TCCD, GBHZ...
WC- temps under 42c
chip from batch #523 goes to 3Ghz @ 1.45 same setup :brick:

Entertaining suggestions to get it to do something more, otherwise....

Going to stick in my beloved's computer, still better that 2.6Ghz @ 1.5Vcore :shrug:

not offended....but correct me if I am wrong....is it not smart to buy a chip for $500.00 that can perform just as fast and in alot of cases faster than an fx60? to me that is intelligent and people willing to spend $1,000.00 would be considered "the stupid people"......right or wrong? :toast:

I would agree if that was the retail price, not some jacked up price. Spending almost an extra 50% to gain that last 50 or so mhz, that's not what I call smart.

thats quite a big dollar difference when you consider that the 170 will out perform the fx60 or at least as fast/good as (given the right stepping and cooling)....I think $500.00 for the right stepping is a very SMART decision or you can just roll the dice and get what you get for around $400.00...but who needs to really debate this...this is a no brainer....:toast:
oh yeah and another thing....an extra 50% would make it a $600.00 retail chip....or $750.00 good stepping/batch chip...which is still lower....*-)

i also have to say -- not all of CCB1E 0550vpmw so good as we want to think of,

i tried other chip, which only were able to run at 2700-2750 at 1.42v+
had not try to push it far as already had a better chip :)

i'm sorry if this is bad news.

I wont get my chip until friday now, dang it.
