Well finally got some time to play a little bit on the system. Trying to tweak it slightly and first off is trying to figure out proper voltages for 4.05Ghz and to make sure its fully stable. So working on 450Mhz FSB since I don't think my ram will do 500Mhz without really dropping the voltage into her but might be wrong, since im playing with voltages currently so my guess on it might be off by quiet a bit.
So with this comes the questions I have. What is a reasonable northbridge tempature on stock cooling? Right now its looking to be in 43C idle and upwards of 48C (currnetly 45C) loaded. I do have a fan on it, and the heatsink does get warm so I know its getting decent contact but as well its nearly 29C in the room at this time. As well is the system tempature the PWM's, if not where is this even located? Thats sitting around 50-51C or so under load.
So with that is tempatures ok to run at for 24/7 on the mobo currently? I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket sink for it (not sure which) but first going to probably modifiy my case to insert 2x 120mm fans into the side of it to blow over the video card/NB chipset area's. After I get a little better cooling on my video cards, and move onwards to the case cooling as well im going to start pushing her a little more.
Ya system = PWM temp. 50C PWM is fine, don't bother changing heatsinks, as the stock heatsink is doing a great job. Better PWM cooling is only needed for highly overclocked Quads ;)
You can improve NB temp by either lapping the stock heatsink or using a Thermalright HR-05 IFX + 80mm fan, but 45C is still ok. Of course less is always better, especially as the board clocks better if you keep NB temp down. How much MCH you using?
Excellent, surprised my PWM's where that cool was expecting mid 60's for some reason.
For the MCH when I was getting those temps it was 1.463V, but even playing around last night it could reach 48C if I didn't open the front of my case up. Was using that to get 450Mhz but after some head scratching last night, and a quest to conserve a little more power when the PC is not in full use I wanted to get my EIST/Speedstep up and running as well, first board in a while that I could do it again.
So while doing that, realized my voltages/clocks where not stable at all. Thought they where but I was mistaken. So thought it was heat related, since it was rather warm and humid last night while I waited for the AC to push the air upstairs. I downed my clocks, and played with FSB with lower CPU clocks to make sure I wasn't starving the CPU for voltage. And to my admazement it was that, man screwed up on my inital runs with voltages for the the clocks.
Instead of 1.1V bios now up to 1.125V bios for 3.6Ghz, but my MCH is down to 1.35V instead of the 1.40V, and Ram voltage is down to 2.05V bios instead of 2.1V. It ran last night no error's/crashes after an hour doing a stress on the CPU and then RAM in orthos, which for a prelim test was good enough for trial right now since it was crashing the system between 1 and 20min before. Man been a while since I really did a good overclocking method :) So might be able to drop voltages on this but for a secondary clock if it gets too warm in my room these settings are good enough for me, considering I was gaming, and doing 3D renders at an unstable setting previously.
Thanks for the suggestion on the NB replacement. Would that have space fitting issues considering I got a 120-Ultra Extreme in there as well and a CF setup?
No, the HR-05 would fit fine. It's wider than the stock heatsink but not as thick. Good luck with your OC, I think I'm gonna try 4,1Ghz tonight ;)

:eek: How would I even consider mounting a 120mm fan to the stock heatsink? Hehe, With such a small area I know I can fit a 120mm on the bottom side of my CPU heatsink but that showed little to no results for me. Guessing your saying blowing down into the NB heatsink right? Or would bending the heatsink to the point where you could squeeze the 120mm fan in there and it would suck the air through the NB.

I must have some wierd MCH.... I knew before I could NEVER boot at under 1.4V... for 4.05Ghz. Let alone actually running orthos in Windows with 1.35V. Im really confused and happy at the same time.
Running 450Mhz, decently loose settings 5-5-5-15 on ram, 2.05V bios, MCH 1.35V bios, CPU now 1.175V Bios... and its running orthos, more than I was getting yesterday at higher voltages. I didn't think I did anything different just went to stock settings in the bios and re-entered what was needed to up the voltage, and wahla I have what I have currently. Still need to test more but this is rather intresting. NB temp is 41C, PWM is 27C. So a little cooler than yesterday and helps that the voltage is lower.
Kicker is I swear I tried the voltage settings on the ram yesterday at this and even the MCH at 1.4V and it wouldn't go.
Ok, I have no idea what, where or why, but here it is.. suddenly I can prime at >FSB 450. Currently trying 456*9, GTL disabled (again), it passed 1h largeFFT at 456*8 (to rule out the Vcore) and now seems stable at only 1,45V for 4,1Ghz - haven't even tried lower.
Still 1/11 bios, 333 strap, 1:1 mem divider. Only raised clockgen volts to 3,6.. maybe that was it?

i finally broke 10k on everest, it turns out that i had 2 bad sticks (in slots 1/3) that were giving me no boots and bad clocks, im glad that i dont overvolt so RMA time
new scores though pl7 t2 enabled vista x64biz, im going to work on it more tomorrow and hopefully and get some liquid cooling soon for some 3d benching
Hey guys just looking for some advice on whether or not this mobo would be a good fit for me. I am on a DFI Blood Iron P35 board right now and I am getting a suspicion the voltages to the CPU are not very clean and fluctuate way to much (terrible vdroop). The last several times I booted up the vcore was different and I haven't changed the VID.

I need a good mobo for my E8400 that can handle a 450fsb OC and fit a Tuniq Tower 120. I am not sure if this mobo will fit that kind of heatsink? Also, Crossfire is important for me and I want to get another 4870 down the line and have 16x/16 crossfire. This is a must! I know this mobo has had bios issues, but i am looking to do a simple OC from 3Ghz to 4FGhz on my wolfdale! I am not going for anything extreme or attempting to push the limits of the cpu or mobo.
im about to start clock again this time im going for 500+ fsb runs and 1200+ ram speed, and the scores are were they should be with a 455fsb im within 70% of ideal NB bandwidth it dosnt get much better than that
so i got it going with the 502mhz fsb, its not getting were i want it, i think that i need more NB voltage or a cooler NB
