back when i ran the same speeds (fsb, ram & overall clocks on the cpu) with my 9800xt, i could do fsbs of >220 mhz and would get no such errors.

so then i decided to step it up some and booted at 201 mhz fsb with PAT disabled or partially enabled. that way i could up the fsb to almost 290 mhz (mem 3:2 or 5:4 - didn't matter) without getting glitches on the geforce. only when i went even further, like 300 mhz or even 310ish on the fsb, i would get artifacting again - still with the gf at stock clocks.

then again, i could also boot at 251 mhz 1:1 with PAT enabled (since on the p4p800se you get pat back on when selecting ddr500 as ramspeed). that would work good for everything BUT graphical apps. i haven't tested how far i would need to drop the fsb to stop the artifacting, but my guess is that the border for that happening would be about the same 175-185 mhz fsb it used to be before with the 6800gt installed.

this seems rather strange to me, but i have heard of this from other folks around using current gen cards - not necissarily all nvidia. some x800's where in the pack iirc.

so if anybody has a workaround for that, i'd really appreciate that. from the looks of it, this seems to be somewhat nb-related, with slacker timings or something on the nb when PAT is disabled. even increasing the vagp didn't really do any good...

this phenomenon is indepedent of the cpu-clock. with PAT enabled i got it at 2800 mhz (200x14, 1:1), 2400 mhz (200x12, 1:1) or even 2000 mhz (200x10, 1:1) using the same fsb-speeds and voltages for all runs or at 2760 mhz (306x9, 5:4) with PAT partially enabled...

I was recently told by somebody that it might be a problem with 2x512. He said that apparently Dothan's, no matter what you do, just don't like 2x512 :\. He said 2x256 is the way to go if you want anything respectable. Maybe you should see if you have some 256 sticks lying around that you could test to prove this theory

Here is my plan

This will raise the cradle holddown notches around 1/8" to 1/4".

2) Apply a thin foam tape around the processor core to act as a shim

3) LOTS of seal string like you have

4) using the same hold downs from the CT-479 heatsink.

5) Add another layer of neoprene all around the Prommie head

6) Add another layer of neoprene on the back

I am a little afraid of condensation because of the low heat load geneated by the Dothan ..... even at 3.4g (i wish! :p: :p: )

I am hoping for 2.9 to 3.1g from a 730M on a P4P800SE for everyday use.....Dreaming?

1. I used the Promie's default back panel but crossed with the holes.......Just with the seal string like an AMD mounting.....

5. I gained almost 50MHz more on air with the heat spreader and about .....nothing on phase change........

You CANOT use a heat spreader when using a prommie and the holddowns from the CT-479 heatsink....Too high and it won't fit....I change the mounting of the prommie now....I'll post some photos later on about that.......ALSO when trying to pull out the prommie's head from the Dothan when I had the seal string, I pulled out the CT-479 adaptor too and broke two pins of it......Soldered back.... :D
So no more seal string for me anymore :)

I wish you to hit over 3100MHz with the prommie.......I couldn't managed to do so.....At 3025MHz I can bench ANYTHING - even 3D - BUT at 3031MHz I got freezings......I've changed mobos from P4P800-SE to P4C800-E and the exact same things happens.....3025MHz MAX no matter what.......From -20*C full load to -32*C full load........NOTHING........3025MHz MAX....... :(

P.S. P4C800-E mobo is way TOO faster from P4P800-SE........ ;)

PS If you raise the cradle using a nylon washer between the motherboard and the cradle, you could ease the pressure applied to the CPU allowing you to use the heatspreader...??

Ran some more tests on another Dothan system (another P4C800-e Del) same thing, 250 boots fine, 255 wouldnt boot, system runs fine in windows to ~ 275. As tested before, resetting the system at 275 = no boot. Rebooting its fine. Resetting at 250 though and all is fine :)
No boot on 8* multi on this system either.

well i managed to pull of a run with 2x512mb (my beloved khx) at 306mhz fsb -
used to be impossible with pat partially enabled before - now it works, thanks
to the tips quoted in my post #707 in this thread.
i do have some mushkin (2x256) 3500 lvl2 lying around, but i'm not going to
use them.. this rig is meant to be a gaming monster and 2x256 just don't cut
it ;).
anyway, what i did was drop the dram latency to 01 from 00 and i disabled
fastwrites for the card. that way i could run at said 306mhz fsb with the card
clocked at 400/1150, which is not bad after all. any higher and i had to in-
crease the agp/pci lock to 36/72 mhz to stop the rig from going into ultra-
crawl mode.

i know what you're getting at, being that i own a bunch of phase change
units myself :). i know you need to insulate and be careful about it not to
create any breaches in the insulation around the socket. with my bit about
the added layer of pcb & 2 sockets (bottom of adapter & regular socket on
the board) i meant that those will have a weakening effect on the overall
cold transported to the back, especially considering there is air inside that
socket (without you taking care of it with some dielectric grease or vaseline),
between the socket and the pcb, etc etc.
this wasn't meant to be questioning the fact that we need to insulate every-
thing within close proximity of the cpu(-socket). it may have questioned the
use of the heater if anything, since some old mach1 units didn't come with
that heatpad (mine didn't) and are nevertheless capable of running a system
24/7 for ages without condensation. so i was wondering what good it prob-
ably would do (if any) unless you live in a very humid place, which most of
us probably don't.

As I said earlier, I didn't notice any difference in clock between stock Vapo and -85 cascade. :( Then again, I fried my board before I could do any serious testing, but Hipro kind of confirms what I found, that there seems to be an OC cut-off regardless of temp.

Maybe I need to go to a 770...

Sorry sky ... I misunderstood you. I get it now and completely agree (except or the effect of the rear heater). My Mach1 did come with a rear heating pad.

Well, today it looks like my CT-479 died. No longer POSTs with any CPU in it. My motherboard appears to be fine still so I'm pretty sure it's the adapter.

I know some people have had adapters failing for unexplained reasons, I wonder why mine died so soon (only had it for 2 1/2 months) and I didn't do any crazy vcore/overclocking with it. :S

I tottaly agree with you.......There MUST be a LOT of Dothan fpo/batches out there that are not going well at all as for the overclocability.........What week/year was yours uclajd?.......Mine is a Phillipines one of week 49 and year 2004....

bought a p4c800e dlx today for ct479 and pm730.
board works fine, but bios/bootup is veeeery slow..
for example, it takes ~10 seconds to up the fsb by one mhz.. and so on.
also it takes loads of times to display POST messages.. they are scrolling like on XT...
have latest beta installed right now, it was no different with other bioses..
any common cure?

Appart from when It was first looking for SATA drives, mine is very quick :confused:

isolated the problem - radeon 9550 flashed to 9600 causes this slowdown.
i'll try to flash it back to 9550.

Ok guys, I've never been an Intel o'cer so I don't know so much about Intel motherboards, that's why I'm asking the question:

If I'm getting the Asus Canterwood mobo (P4C800-E) for Dothan action, should I pay attention to which revision is it - 1.xx or 2.00? Are there any notable differences which might impact overclocking (e.g., different cpu power circuit, cheaper/better components on different revisions, better ability to handle voltages etc?). If yes, which revision is better?

w/ server 2K3 i am able to run Pi MOD1.4 1M at 160.3 Mhz. [w/ XP SP2 159.9 Mhz max only]

Can somebody run more than 1,6Vcore with a P4P800SE without modding. If I select more than 1,6v it sets back to stock and bios disables everything above 1,6V :(

1.6V is the max setting in the bios.
You can try the pin mod, but it didn't work with mine.
Only with a vcore mod you can adjust your Vcore up to 1.8V :D

Realy i have not seen any benefit of running higher then 1.55v My cpu does same @1.5 as it does @1.6. I dobt 1.8 will make it more stable, probably reverce it will make it hoter and less stable. Even with temps on -11c idle and 2c@ load i did not see any benefit. At this temps my 730 maxes out on 2880 PI stable on p4p800se with 1009.04 bios.
I can do same run with 1.45 and 1.6v. But anything after even 2885 it just hangs no matter the voltage. Even people that bench on LN2 realy dont see much improvement after 1.6v :fact:

OK i'll leave it @ 1,6V. But as you said max speed is strange. I can benchmark at 2710mhz and at 2720 it just totally hangs :confused: But my old NewCastle was really voltage loving (0441XPMW) 1,95V on air gave best results :woot:

that seems to be the norm with these Dothans - they hit a solid Overclock wall. It runs stable at say 2823mhz, but at 2840mhz it reboots constantly.

I have tried them. There is a thread in this forum about them http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=67737. Seams to be stable and nice features. I have not tried .03 since i just have my Dothan rig for 2 days;)

I was wondering the exact height of the cpu core off the chip. I was thinking of having some p4 heatspreaders ground down and a small notch the size of the core milled in the middle to make the shim as 'thermally efficient as possible. I've got the worst luck with chipping cores and I have a feeling I'm going to be installing and uninstalling various heatsink, waterblocks while I try to find the limit of the 740 and shop for another chip.

I've got a zalman 7000 I can use, figure this would be a good quiet cooling solution to use in a SageTV/AVI to DVD ripper/Console Emulator machine.

I was going to go to a local metal finishing shop I found in the yellow pages w/ a pair of P4 heatspeaders to have them ground, lapped and polished along with some of my heatsinks and ramsinks that could use a better finish. Would I be better off just using some 1.5mm thick copper for the job, or maybe even silver?

I work a block and a half away from the NYC diamond district, and my coworkers have some family in the jewlery making biz there. If I wanted to make some silver shims, what type of silver should I ask for and how large. I figure 35mm x 35mm x 1.5mm or 2.5mm if I can have a notch for the core machined for it.

I'm trying to think of the best way to get a nice mold of the core. I'm not too keen on pouring plaster on my brand new 740. Any suggestions on getting an easy mold of the core without damaging the chip? Do any of you have a fried Pentium M they could donate if I can find a good place to make a bunch of shims?

Look a the second or third post in this thread. And I just mounted a P4 IHS to a Dothan... it's the same as a P4 IIRC. Just need to use RTV like Intel does.

I've thought of your idea before...it would nice, too....

I know I saw the dimesions somewhere on one of the dothan threads just couldnt remember which one, I can't beleive its over 30 pages already! :)

Do you think its better to have a mold of the chip since that black coating goo probably throws the factory spec off, or does the factory spec account for this?

Do you have a link to where I can buy some RTV thats close to what intel is using? Im hoping that I can get something machined tight enough that all thats needed to make an airtight seal between the IHS and the chip would be a thin layer of ceramique all over so that removal should be a snap if needed.

Gonna see how good this metal finishing place is w/ the P4 spreaders while I try to negotiate a good price on the silver. I'm figuring a jewelry maker might even be able to do the whole thing, although I dont think they take the need for truly flat surfacing into account in their polishing as much as a metal finisher would.

here's the problem... if you make a IHS that fits on core and rests on the pcb, what about the TIN on the core, that takes up a little space, too. RTV is simply black silicone from a hdwe store. I will start a thread of "how-to"!

Yeah, thats what I mean, how to machine it to have just enough slack to account for the intel coating and its sloppy drip over. You think a .9mm notch height wise in 2.5mm silver stock should cover it as well as a .1mm around to account for the intel tin would do it. I figure a bead of ceramique around the perimeter should fill in the core notch.. If I make the core notch w/ room to spare over spec measurements and a perfectly flat base that can be coated w/ tim as well to seal from the atmosphere, what kind of condensation risks are there, or should I really be more worry about good core contact this point?

I have the same problem and I also have the p4p800se and PM750 configuration.

I've tried bumping up the Vcore and Volt on the memory but it didn't help. I think some CPU chip are speed limited. If you figure out how to pass 2.5G, let me know.

I CAN SURELY GO TO 2.5, I CAN ENTER THE WINXP AT 2.50, BUT NOT VERY STABLE. GO ON INTERNET AND OFFICE SOFT WARE IS O.K. ,BUT GAMING
IS NOT STABLE.

TEMP. IS IMPORTANT, BEFORE I USE WATER COOLING, I CAN ONLY GO UP
TO 2.46, BUT ONCE WATER IS USED, I CAN GO INTO WINXP AT 2.52.
BUT ONCE WATER TEMP. GO UP A LITTLE BIT, SAY 3C, IT BECAME
UNSTABLE.
BUT I THINK THE LIMIT IS NOT ONLY 2.5, MANY CAN GO UP TO 2.7 BY
STOCK COOLING.

Water does NOT help Dothan very much... it only lowers temps a few degrees on the low temp Dothan... Some chips are just NOT very good OC'ers.

What? you have acces to a Yonah chip? Maybe its a bios problem, thats why it doesn't work. On what mobos was it tried?

yeah one of my m8 got yonah on hand

he tried ct479 aopen 915GM, but unfortunately no mobo works

atm, only intel reference 945GM can boot the cpu......

now, if only asus get a ver2.0 ct 479 out :slobber:

WELL, A LITTLE BIT HIGHER NOW, I CAN BE STABLE AT 2.5. FOR THIS
I MADE SOME IMPROVEMENTS ON MY WATER COOLING AND GOT
TEMP. 32C IDLE 44C FULL LOAD.
THEN I BOOTED AT 2.48 (207*12), AND USE CLOCKGEN TO RAISE
FSB UP TO 208.46, 2.5G CAME OUT FINALLY AND PAST ALL TEST.
I THINK DOTHAN OCING HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH TEMP.
AT LEAST IN MY CASE, EVEN 6C LOWER DOWN, I CAN PUSH MY 2.46 UP
TO 2.5, I BELIEVE IN WINTER IN SOUTH CHINA, I CAN SUCCEED 2.52G.

BUT I HAVE TO ADMIT, B1 ES IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE IN OCING.

My last one was a rev. 1.01. I don't know if they have any newer ones out. Mine died after 2 ½ months of use though. :(

I got all the dothan parts right now, including the P4C800-E DLX.

now i havn't understand something..

can i just assemble it and update the bios with the dothan in? or should i put a p4 cpu first, update the bios and assemble the dothan.

You must update with a P4 before installing the Dothan.


Now for my question.

I will be using a Zalman 7000cu as my HS. After reading, I am to just turn the metal bar that goes into the carriage upside down in to order to get the Zalman to screw on. Does this provide enough pressure to transfer the heat properly?

Again after reading, the height increase in about 1/4". Turning the bars upside down provides almost an 1" of height increase. Is this correct or am I missing something?

If it doesn't have a recent enough BIOS to support the Dothan, you need to use a P4 to update the BIOS first.

Also I notice that you've got a good overclock in your AOPEN board. Did you have to do anything special to get it? From what I've read the boards don't have AGP/PCI lock, and from my experience with two, I couldn't get any kind of decent overclock.

that's easy man, went to the bios, disabled the o/b card, then put 5:4 FSB:DRAM, and 2.5-2-2-5.

then "cpuz" gave me a special version of clockgen that locks the AGP/PCI, so i raised the FSB and save the ratios. (133)

I didn't needed a P4 for my P4P800SE. It had normal P4 bios on it.
I could update the bios with a cheapo Banias. The only thing is that it was recognized as a P4.
