ABIT IC7 – IC7-G – IC7 MAX3 ALL in one Modifications - The way to go!

My friend just did a stupid thing, and I would like everybody to know of the thing.
He unplugged the main ATX cable from the mobo and tried to jumpstart it (to meassure voltages) with the ATX12 cable still in the board.
This made one MOSFET burn out next to the connector. There's a hole in the top of it. (See attached image, between sinks and 2 caps)
So beware of doing that!

I would like to know if you guys think it is possible to replace this component?
Or is the board more likely to be completely destroyed?
I know some of you guys have dead boards lying around. I would be xtremely glad if someone could unsolder that component and send it to me.
I can pay for it and shipment through PayPal.

He,he,he.........I once did burned down the EXCACT SAME Mos-Fet when I worked my other everyday 24/7 SETI crunching rig with an overclocked - on air - Prescott CPU.......Nothing to worry about, it can be repaired.........When I was waiting till I found one so as to repair mine , Another Mos-Fet went down - the one next to it - and for about 1 1/2 weeks I was working my Mobo with TWO PHASE power.....I had to unsolder them so as to work with two phases........It continued to work even with two phases......... :D

ok, so if I unsolder the legs of the mosfet, it might work with 3 phases?
Or do I need to unsolder the other one also, to get only 2 phases?

Hipro: Do you know if I can get another MOSFET, with the same spec?
Or do I really need one from an IC7 board?

No one else with a dead board who could be able to send me one please?

i burnt out a vdimm mosfet. it got so hot it actually melted the copper layer in the board(i wired the vtt mod backward). i just unsoldered it cleaned the mb off put the same mosfet from a wrecked board and presto it worked..

Does anyone (i.e. Hipro5) know what that little smt is connected to the positive leg of the electrolytic capacitor?

I accidentally soldered off the metal end of the smt that would have connected to the capacitor. :( I wasn't sure what to do so I went ahead and soldered my capacitor (1.500uF) to that point on the mobo. As a result, I have lost my onboard USB and I can't overclock as high as I could before my mishap at either 1:1 or 5:4.

Can I just replace that smt or am I screwed?

Yes you could tottaly unsolder the small Mos-Fet and work as a three phase circuit........

Sorry I don't know........I used a dead IC7 mobo to do so........ ;)

EDIT:

I managed to fix the problem. It's not pretty but everything is back to normal. If this happens to anyone else, a 100nF multilayer capacitor makes a good replacement. I found one on a broken xbox motherboard.

Can i take a "Rubycon 2200uF, 105°, 6.3V MBZ2200M 10x20" (from an old IC7-Max3) for the Northbridge Mod??
I´m not sure, because its a ultra low esr Capacitor (13mOhm/20°)!

now a second unsolved question about Vnorth voltage!

Why the voltage with a installed Prescott CPU is 0,2V lower (MM reading 1,3V in Bios) than a Northwood (should be 1,5V)!

Have the Vnorth Mod, i mean the Mod with the 50K variable Resistor near second PCi Slot negative Effects for Prescott usage!

Because on my last Max3 i have contact at the Vdd Mosfet´s measering point to the middle pin of the mosfet! heedless :toast:

Now i measure at the Vdd point 1,432V, but the old board gives me a blue screen, soon i set higher vcore! standard Vcore every thing is ok!

Maybe i need a new Vdd Mosfet, but i dont find the same one! infinion, but wich one! And where to buy, i´m from Austria (sorry for my bad english ;) )

I know this isn't really a mod, but I was wondering if I'll see any benefit in upgrading from bios V19 on my IC7. I don't have any stability problems or anything like that, but I was wondering if it'd help in any aspect, maybe more "realistic" temp. readings.

alright, next time I need to restart the computer..~30 days, I'll be sure to flash the bios. have the temp problems been fixed yet?

No.........You can mod it to show you the right temp.....

I'm weary of soldering little capacitors and things that like if that's what it takes..

I modded my new IC7 today, but I have a problem with the VAGP-mod. The solder didn't stick to the pcb, near the cutted trace. What I'm doing wrong :(

did you scratch the coating on top of the trace? you should see clean copper wire then. put some flux and tin it. should solder without a problem. it is hard to get it to stay there. make sure you put a dab of superglue afterwards

I've got a question about the Vdd mod, is it possible to do it with a pencil instead of soldering a VR ?
Was thinking to use a 2B pencil and reduce the resistance as it is... will this work ? what you guys recon?

Hi again, couldn't resist so i did the mod with a pencil :D
for a weird reason the vdd measured from the mosfet above the agp was showing 1.28v default :confused: while it should be 1.4v or something???
Anyway, with the pencil mod it went up to 1.68v, question is, will this be safe to operate 24/7 with the stock cooler? (the blue heatsink with the fan in it, not the old one with a square cheapo chipset cooler with seperate fan that hooks on it).

IF you have a Northy this voltage is about 1.42V but if you place a Prescott one , this voltage is about 1.28V.......So it's OK.....for a prescott..... ;)

Try to have 1.72Volts for a Northy and 1.52Volts for a Prescott max for 24/7....... ;)
