73% fan on my GTX 470 is, in volume, approximately the same as my 5870 was when I ran it at about 40% give or take a little, but a lower, gentler noise rather than the hairdryer-whir in pitch of the 5870.

Yeah, it's actually sorta surprising how overclockable these things are... I think the GTX 470 especially represents a good value.

Strange, I don't hear the fan on my card until it hits 45%. Perhaps it's because it's in an enclosed PC case instead of an open one. In any case I usually have mine set to around 30%-35% unless its hot out.

I hear anything over 35% inside my HAF922 which is about 0.75M from where i am sitting but i am running all low noise fans but again that is with the speakers off

If you can hear yours and I cannot at 35%. There is no way you wouldn't hear 470 at 70% :p:. Heck at 70% for me it would be a problem based on some of the videos I watched (I've tried to find the ones I watch but can't find them at the moment). At 70% its nothing like mine at 40%, night and day.

It's hard to judge from videos due to speaker differences, microphone differences, compression, and volume.

It doesn't matter one can make a decision based on the information. You don't need to "eye ball it yourself" just to determine if something is loud or not.
Here is another video at a good distance. This one has the fan speed at 80% though. Again, still loud IMO. Don't think I'm nitpicking because I am not. Any video card with a similar fan design can be loud at 70%+ it's just that the comment that 70% isn't loud is something I refuting.

I run an open bench and sit a little under 3 feet from it. I started my sound level meter and put it in my spot on chair. I next turned the fan up to 100%, and recorded max volume level @ 61db. (GTX 480)

GTX470 overclocking passed GTX480 speeds is the same thing to me as a HD5850 overclocking passed HD5870 speeds. With the GTX470 OCed outperforming the GTX480 stock and the HD5870 similar/faster than the GTX480, an OCed 5850 would be faster than all.

Meaning, at $289 I would easily buy a GTX470, but no way at $350 or $380 - what is in stock now in Canada. For $7 more I might as well get a 5870.

But a gtx 370 is faster than a 5850. The thing is, the gtx 470 scales better with clocks than the 58xx series. I could easily see the 5870 and the gtx 470 being just as fast as each other under max clocks.

Yes, this is what I was getting at. The site Alienbabeltech max OC'd both a 480 and a HD5870 and saw that the difference between the cards increase. I don't trust that site much but I don't think they could be making up numbers.

Also - 600mhz to 800mhz represents an overclock of %33. Are 5850's able to OC to 725*1.33 = 965mhz on stock cooler? This is not a rhetorical question, I actually don't know :D

In my TJ07 ( which has 4 noctua 120s, 2 scythe 800rpms and 2 low noise 92s ) I can hear my 5870 at anything above 25%. At this point and beyond it is noticeable and at 40% its impossible to miss. When playing a game ( ie when there is noise ) at 33% or less it is fairly reasonable but I can still pick out the fan without a doubt at speeds above 33%. Depending on the game at my current clocks (925/1275 with 1.25v ) the fan ranges from 33-40% undersustainted load. I've only managed to get it to go past this using Furmark or OCCT. Personally past 40% is unbearable for me. I could easily set the card to 1.3v+ and get 975-1000ghz but its not worth the extra noise and heat produced in light of the really small gains so I struck a balance with my current settings. I'm still considering going water again down the road but I might try the Thermalright Spitfire and Vram cooler ( takes up a crap load of space but they claim it can cool even a 480 )

My case is on the floor next to me 3 feet from my chair so my ear level is above the top 120 fans which has some effect ( having the case on the desk itself just makes the hard drives more noticeable if anything )

Also note my machine is in a basement room which has a low noise floor and I live in a quiet area so outside enviromental noise isn't a factor. Basically noise tollerence is very subjective but the environment is a large factor as well.

I'd like to try a 470/480 myself but like GoldenTiger mentioned, it is very hard to measure sound levels due to the mentioned varriables and its difficult to use anothers subjective opinion alone. That said a sound meter used at a realistic distance ( case - sitting area ) is the best we can do. The only issue with this is a Db rating alone doesn't tell the whole story on the frenquency of the noise ( ie some fans are more annoying than others despite their noise level )

All that said, the 470 looks like a fun card to play with on air so far, as for the 480... not so much. It is begging to be watercooled.

Eh, GTX 470 overclocked vs. 5870 with overclock seems to be a pretty tight race... and 5870's run $410 including shipping or more in the US, with GTX 470's running $350-360 shipped.

One of the reasons that i never considered getting a 470/480 ,but maybe in the future a second hand card to play with and i have to agree with golden tiger on the video part , you need Both cards running at the same Video with similar cases too tell the difference , otherwise there is too many variables and it will better to stick to the db graphs

With over-voltage and stock cooling 1GHZ is doable but it will suck more power than the HD5970 if you overvolt too much

Wow, are 5850's able to do 1ghz stable with stock cooler? That's hell of an OC

Just got my 470 SLI setup today. Benching shortly.

Right off the bat GPU idle is less than old 8800GT's
EVGA 470's in SLI idle in case is GPU1 48c. GPU2 46c.
BFG 8800 GT's OC2's idle was 63c.

I'm curious to see how they do on older hardware..Quad core 9650 and Striker II extreme 790i chipset.

Wow, if you are having issues with a 5870 at 25%+ I can see why you would have issues with a 470 at 70%+. Unless you simply have a preference for a particular brand and willing to tolerate one over the other.

Actually you don't have to do that. The noise you here in and of itself is not subjective as it is what it is. What you are willing to tolerate is subjective. So if the noise found on the video give you the impression that it is loud that's all you need. Add to that the fan running @ 70% and it clear that you don't need to do comparisons do to having a prerogative.

As far as the idea that you think that some fans are more noisy then others IMO is moot. This is because noise is still noise and IMO all fans come with it. Again, it's what you are willing to tolerate (not make excuses for) that becomes subjective. For me at 35% (although that's the lowest I've seen it so far) I simply don't hear it over the case fans. :shrug:

no they're not.. well nt the overwhelming majority anyway.

Low-900s is not a problem though with a bit of voltage (1.15 or so.. stock 5870 voltage) and cranking the fan speed up a bit.

Yeah if it wasn't for the noise, I'd be attempting to get a 480 without a doubt. I prefer Nvidia's control panel and the fact I just picked up a 3d capable display would compliment that. Even after selling my 5870 getting a 480 to acceptable noise levels would cost me alot more than the 125 difference as i'd have no choice to put it on water, increasing the cost even further still. Sure putting the 5870 on water would cost the same *however* unlike the 480, I can currently put up with its noise level so I don't feel the need for watercooling. I just hope Nvidia can get cooler running GF100 chips before years end as that would be impressive. They have a great future lookig design here but just a less than ideal execution. I'm not a noise freak by any means but I do have a human tollerence for noise. My friend here in Canada got his 480 and he told me they are running louder at stock than his previous 4870x2s. Given I've owned a 4870x2 and know what kind of noise levels to expect so this gives me a good idea. With a 470/480 I'd be compelled to overclock them and given the noise levels only go up from stock, on air it just isn't going to do it for me. Clearly this is all due to my own tollerence of noise and I understand some people have higher noise tollerence levels.

All that said, GF100 on water should = ownage.
