Post your PPD rates !!

Finished my system today. Moved the Titan's to a DualXeon system.

After enabling the -beta flag, all GPUs got as their next WU 7663, which is FaHCore 17. With decent OC (to keep the temperature below 65 C), current estimate is 130k-140k PPD / GPU. 150k PPD / GPU seems possible. Total PPD is currently at 640k. I didn't have time today to start and configure a VM in Hyper-V to move the CPU cores into the VM and enable -bigadv there. Might get another 100-200k PPD with this but have to setup the VM first and migrate then the CPU WUs to the VM. If I have time, I'll do it over the weekend.

I still have the ATI 7970. Due their suboptimal cooling structure, can't put 4 of them in one case. Thinking about to split them into 2 smaller systems with entry level CPUs just to feed them and 2 PCI slots so far apart, that the each of the 2 Gigabyte 7970 GE can get enough fresh air. In tight arrangements they collapsed under heavy load.

I'm using 6 of 8 threads so I can actually surf the web w/o everything feeling like a pentium 2, lol. I'll put the core count to 7 or 8 when I'm away from the computer. I guess there's no issue with 8 cores folding even though the gpu does use some cpu cycles?

last time i checked CPU usage with the 690, the CPU was only using 5% during folding. i can surf easily with the CPU set to 90-95% in the advanced tab.

@Andreas: WOW!! that's some serious guacamole!! please tell me your folding for team xtreme???? (i don't see your name on the team stats page - and we could seriously use those ppd!!)

my bad - I guess just a coincidence then :D Angra starts posting ppd again (quietly, as is his way) - and you start posting about your (very nice) setup (and all its associated ppd) - but are nowhere to be found on the lists....but Angra was posting similar (or possibly higher?) numbers so one can naturally come to the conclusion....that Angra is secretly YOU!! (j/k) :) nahh, it's cool. I would love to see your points on the team listing (well....specifically, ours) but even if not ours, at least your spending your PC wattage on a good cause - that's good enough in my book.

Agreed. I initially started out to compete, but a few weeks ago I met with an elderly man whom ive known a while and he had no idea who i was. Thats when it struck me that not only dementia but Parkinson's and Alzheimer's both run in my family and if nothing is ever done thats going to be me some day. And I cant imagine a greater hell than to be lost every minute of the day and being unable to recognize my amazing daughter.

So ^_^ together we can beat this thing, and for nothing more than using unused cycles on my pc's.

The Gigabyte 7970 can't be packed as dense as the Titan's. Can't cope with the heat in the case. Instead of one PC I build 2 simpler ones with the entry level CPU only targeted to drive the GPUs, no CPU folding: Intel Celeron G1610 ($50). This CPU is more then capable to drive the two 7970 cards. During normal operation, CPU load is at 16-20% (@1.8 GHz), during checkpoints CPU is at 60%.

Power (measured on the wall outlet)
idle: No GPUs. 30 watt
idle: 2 GPUs. 80 watt
FAH: 380 watt

temperature:
both GPUs are now at 60-65C - much better than the 100C in a 4GPU setup I had previously.

Performance:

CPU load - It wouldn't have made much difference to add a higher performing CPU from a PPD perspective, but the energy efficiency would have gone down.

Im tinkering with my i7-920 currently. Ive got it bumped down to 60% on 7 cores and its pushing about 10k ppd @ 2.8ghz. Im going to bump the speed up here shortly and see what i can get it to.

What im noticing is my 5850hd is dragging it down quite a bit, i may end up removing the slot for it and see what my points are up to then.

i'm thinking of getting a 7970 just for folding on my media server (along with my old i7-965@3.8)....if this beta trend (bonus points for GPUs) continues, i'm looking to hit 300k ppd (eventually, not right away) note: this is based on the notion that Andreas's post above is fairly indicative of future earnings on a 7970 of 100k ppd avg. my 690 is getting about 80-85k ppd each on these beta WUs - now I just gotta leave my PC alone long enough for them to make some points hehe...

A couple of initial observations:

The Titan's cooling is superior to the Gigabyte 7970 GE cards I have. The way the fans and cooling fins are designed, the case has to be heated when all doors are closed. The most efficient operation to keep temp under control without requiring the fans to scream und run at full rpm is to put the case sideways, leave the sidepanel open and put a big 200mm fan over the GPUs "sucking" the hot air from the cards into the open space above the case. With that arrangement, all components are in low temperatures, the fans are rather silent and performance on stock frequency seems to hover at 100k PPD with the beta WU 7663 (per card).

Having said that, I'd look into the airflow of your server case first, if the heat can really get out efficiently. The failure rate of hard disks is temp dependent. Personally: I wouldn't combine these 2 roles in one system. The HDDs of my homeserver are at all times well below 30 C, which a folding GPU would raise significantly.

I haven't checked the prices in US, but in my country (Austria) it is possible to build a complete system (CPU, 8 GB memory , 730w PSU, 2 x 7970, 3 x fans) for less than the price of one GTX Titan. In case I will do some folding with Titans, I am probably changing the config once more. Based on the very low CPU demand those OpenCL based WU generate, I am thinking to put the Titans in a LGA-1155 motherboard with one of the entry level CPUs I have, either a i3-3225 or i5-3470. A higher performing i7-3770k wouldn't add that many points vs. the GPUs, would make the energy efficiency worse and costs much more.

I'll reuse my Asus P8Z77-WS, put the lowest performing CPU I have available in (i3-3225) and some memory. With 4 Titans the system's power consumption will be just shy of 700 watt, producing close to 500k PPD (with the current Beta WU, which might change)

The 4x 7970 cards need 2 systems. Total power consumption is 760 watt for approx 400k.

aye, with multiple GPUs I would agree - though my intention is only a single card. and since I will be water cooling the CPU, it would be a simple matter to WC the GPU as well, thereby eliminating any heat issues altogether (though that would of course add to the cost of purchase). my goal is simply to get as much as I can for what I use my computers - since my server PC uses very little resources i could dedicate it to folding with little cost to its actual purpose. an i7-965 + 7970 is certainly overkill for a media server. but as a media server + dedicated folding machine it could prove quite useful. and would already be doing so if my current GPU (GTX285) would get decent WUs, but alas, i don't even think the points it gets count at all (it continually gets WUs worth "unknown" points and therefor does not contribute to my ppd whatsoever - it also is not capable of the new core 17 WUs due - i would assume - to its age/design). the current processor i'm using (an i5-750 dual core/quad thread) is also pretty much worthless for folding - taking far too long to complete a WU and getting a paltry 5-6k ppd. so i will reuse my replaced i7-965 as my new server along with a new (yet to be purchased) 7970. i think that should be good for about 150k ppd (perhaps slightly less)

i may be looking into 2 660ti's or perhaps 2 7950's as well as one of the higher end i7 haskell's coming out. I too should be looking into watercooling when all of this goes down, though the machine itself may take a while to put together bit by bit lol.

Once thats finishing im going to turn my current machine (i7-920, 5850hd, 24g 10600, 6tb) into a host for a few virtual machines, at which point it will also double as a 2nd folding system as i dont use my virtuals much except for pentesting and testing scripts before rollout :).

>:( also, just realized you were beating me. 4 end users with the nice i7 mobile quads took my folding off lol, so i lost ~ 40k ppd now after that. I just wish (for the good of the project) I could somehow get my clients and other fellow admins to get their clients to allow us to put it on their machines, if only to use 1 core. Yeah ive come to realize that im being crippled by the 5850 im mine and by turning it off i get about 20k ppd from the cpu alone. hopefully one day ill get a nice gpu :(

just added another ~50k ppd with 2 more i7 3.6ghz ivy's, apparently we will be ordering 36 more over the next 2 months so hopefully ill see my points skyrocket, and get to play with quite a few of the haswell chips.

back when the gx2 was king I tried this with a reasonable degree of success ....those did vent all to outside the case though

Lifting alternate cards allowed fans to get more air.
