The only reason to buy the new card is benching, and playing Crysis if you haven't so already.
8800GTX will last you long enough to wait till the prices drop massively.

From Digtimes 4/16:
GPU makers to cross blades in June with the launch of Radeon HD 4800 and GeForce GTX 200
Latest news
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Friday 16 May 2008]
AMD and Nvidia are ready to cross blades again in June with their next generation GPU families – the ATI Radeon HD 4800 and GeForce GTX 200, according to sources at graphics card makers.
AMD is planning to launch its ATI Radeon HD 4800 family in the middle of June. The first model to launch will be the ATI Radeon HD 4850 with a price set around US$229.
The company will follow with the 4870 in the late June, with the same specification as the 4850 but will add support for GDDR5 memory. Expected pricing will be set around US$349.
In the fourth quarter, AMD will launch the dual-GPU ATI Radeon 4870 X2 priced around US$529-549.
Nvidia will counter with its new high-end GeForce GTX 200 (D10U) family in the middle of June, featuring a second generation Unified Shader architecture. Launch products will come in GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 versions.

DX10 or DX10.1 ????
is this reliable?
10.1 sure better be there
And I know I'm asking for a lot, but a mobile version to go with the Montevina platform would be check writing time for me :)
fx57 is a reliable source but what wants to say with "50% more gaming performance over 1st generation" ? 50% over 8800 Ultra or 9800GX2 ?
1.- DX10.1 is not there.
2.- 2nd gen. unified architecture = 240SPs instead of 128.
Who cares about DX 10.1, who cares about DX10 all together, its not faster like it was promised to be, and it didnt look like it was "pre rendered" DX9 looks amazing and runs amazing, DX10 never broke through.
i so agree man,"dx10" was martketing ploy for vista.lol faster..
.:rolleyes:me being a true die hard gamer i could give a crap about vista\dx10 for ATLEAST another year before it goes on ANY of my my rigs .it took like 5 years+ to get xp to run right and its till the preferd os of choice for headache free gaming\benching.dx10 and vista are still very immature imo for headache free fun.i read quietly about so many ppl pulling hair out of head trying to get this and that to run right etc on vista.god i couldnt imagine.and forgot the poor souls running ati cards on any o\s and gaming, lmao.
the 9900gtx will drop and run flawlessly in my dx9 xp pro computers and i cant wait..
We aren't going to see what DX10 can really do until its a minimum requirement for games.......
i like dx10.1, but i think i would rather have physx and opengl2.1
Yeah I can agree with that. The physx might be more of a teaser and "future" item than 10.1 of course :)
I guess the question that stands out in my mind is "if I don't really 'need' this much gpu power, shouldn't I wait for the refresh and 10.1?" It's not like the 8800 gets overwhelmed even at 2560 res on most games, even things that used to be GPU crushers like Oblivion. Crysis is really in a world all it's own, though that makes it nice for testing limits.
If they bothered actually utilizing DX10 rather than just tacking on basic support afterwards just to say they 'support DX10' it would look amazing.
Time for XP to reach EOL, maybe we'll start seeing something then..
some more dx10 'only' software please. many people dont need dx10 to run 3d modelling and word processing:lol:Quote:
