Title: [Computex08] RoG X48/P45 boards at ASUS
I have a Q9450 on a Rampage Formula and I was reading that most X48 boards top out at 480 fsb after being tweaked. I have mine running at 487 fsb and after never truly learning how to tweak voltages with my E6600 and Striker Extreme, I'm having alot of trouble breaking past this.
Here are the voltages
CPU - 1.25v
CPU PLL - 1.68v
Ram - 1.82v
NB - Auto - 1.68v
I haven't set any other voltages because most of them I've never worked with before. Working on phenoms for the last 6 months didn't help either. I tried setting the fsb to 490 and it didn't load windows, so I upped cpu to 1.3v and nb to 1.71v. It got me into windows once, but it wouldn't run prime at all, actually crashed prime in about 3 minutes. I didn't post this in a new thread because with all the official ones it would probably get lost in the mix.
using latest bios / rampage formula / not ocing / bios at default / system reboots randomly when i go sleep(so its idle) and leave downloads on the bg+msn /
anyone having the same problem do let me know.
using a Q9300 w/ 4gb corsair 800 ram
Getting horribly frustrated with this rampage formula. I'm on my second one, and once again I have the very same cold boot issue.
Here's what I do to create it:
Turn AI Overclock Tuner to manual. Leave everything at auto (or put in stock settings, doesn't matter). Shut down machine normally. Turn power switch off. Turn power switch on. Fans and LCD poster light up, gets to check cpu or cpu init, then shuts off and starts up again. Sometimes it will give overclock failed but not usually. Its almost like the board isn't supplying enough voltage to the cpu to boot up, but I have no idea. My dfi doesn't do this with the same parts. Not sure why I was retarded enough to think an asus product would actually work right.
Parts/bioses I've tried:
corsair dominator 8500s (2x2 gb kits, 1-4 sticks, any slots)
g.skill pc2 8000's (2x2 gb kits, 1-4 sticks, have 6 sticks I've tried, any slots)
Enermax 650 watt psu, corsair 620 watt psu, silverstone decathlon 800 watt psu
e3110, e8400, x3360 cpu's -- all verified to be working
In or out of case -- there is no emi issue
9800 gtx ssc, 8800 gts 512, 7900 gtx
Pretty much all the available bioses I've used
If no settings are touched and the AI overclock tuner is left as auto, it will boot normally. If stock settings for hardware are dialed in or if the setting is just moved to manual with everything else at auto it will NOT cold boot properly. Once that setting is touched, the cold boot issue is present even with nothing but the cpu in the board (not even any fans plugged in). No gpu, led's or anything needs to be plugged in. It is *REALLY* irritating.
Anyone getting this and have fixed it that have done something I haven't already tried? Its not hanging at det-dram so unfortunately the ram doesn't seem to be the issue (god I wish it was).
all ASUS boards beginning from P965 have this "feature" - double start from cold boot when AI Overclock is turned to Manual in Bios. Your board is OK. I also had double starts on Commando, P5K Premium and now on Rampage Formula. This is normal.
well, it's something about programming chipset registers and timings needed to cold boot. Don't know why asus implemented this "feature" while others can do without it.
My NB is idling at 56c ( FSB=400, 1.6v). I applied AS to the heatpipe too, whats a good way to cool it off?
Yes, read here:

Getting some cmos corruption with the rampage formula (and possibly even bios corruption). Essentially after the box has been sitting for several hours cold, I turn it on and get stuck at checkcpu despite being stable for 24 hours (each) of both small ppu and blend priming. It does its normal double boot then comes into a checkcpu error. I bumped voltages some but that didn't seem to help. The cpu is fine, after wrestling with the cmos reset button it will work fine and let me load my previous settings w/o problems. It then boots into windows and is perfectly stable.
Hardware:
xeon x3360 w/TRUE 120
8 gigs corsair dominators ddr2 1066 5-5-5-15 (4x2) @ 1021 mhz
evga 9800 gtx ssc
Here's my settings:
fsb: 425
CPU - 1.33125v (this is a little overkill, but it drops to about 1.25 under load)
CPU PLL - 1.50v
Ram - 2.06v
NB - 1.51
Loadline calibration = off
ram at 5-5-5-15 w/ trfc 60
All other settings @ auto
Given how stable the cpu normally is I'm guessing this is ram related however the memory passes memtest86 test 5 multiple times flawlessly. My hunch is that at boot time its not giving the ram enough voltage causing cmos corruption. Just to eliminate the possibility I upped the voltages on my cpu across the board by a notch. I'll know for sure whether that works when I get home. It does NOT corrupt the cmos unless the box has been sitting cold for several hours. I've left it off for 45 minutes and it still comes up flawlessly -- its rather odd to say the least.
update: Had one ram stick dying intermittently and it was *very* difficult to track down. Finally got it though and sent it back to corsair.
thanks for that link!!
only two x16 lanes on the Rampage Extreme?? Really? doesn't Maxiums Extreme have three (x16, x8, x8 if using all three??)
kind of a bummer. would be nice to find more options for dual graphics AND a slot for x8 RAID controller
looks fricken sexy though :)

1.add"CPU Clock Skew" & "NB Clock Skew"
2.add uCode(E0)
If you don't use water cooling, do you need to replace the water block in the north bridge.
wow - ditto that. Probably the best looking board I've seen. Hope it runs as nice!!
