Thats just an opinion and a bad one at that.
I dont see anything the US has made in recent years to adequately compete with the Mazda MX5, Mazda RX8, Honda S2000 and the Honda NSX ;)
Just more big, lumbering engines that are crippled for emissions and put out weak amounts of power :p
Is Ignorance bliss?
US car that performs better than the MX5/RX8/S2k=Pontiac solstice/Saturn Sky (turbo)
Honda NSX is not in production but the Corvette of the same year will eat it for lunch.
I dont hear you complaining about the LS motor being in a Commodore...?
There is nothing wrong with a LS1 in a 200sx, its much lighter than a RB/VQ or even a VK. They make more power, they are more reliable and much cheaper to modify.
I have to import all RB/SR parts...
I am not saying that the US makes the best car ever, I own 3 Japanese cars; 2-200sx and a Mazda 3. But I am not biased, if someone makes a good car then i will give them respect.
If you cannot respect the Small Block Chevy, then you have a lot of learning to do when it comes to motors.
for starters, mazda is american, and has been for a while, so you just contradicted yourself. the corvete destroys the NSX with only half throttle. i dont even want to think about what the c6 would do. s2000, lol, after 120mph the s2000 rearend starts to hop all over the place and destroy itself.
and yes, a 5.7 liter engine, that makes 500whp, AND meets emissions standards is definantly crippled. while getting 20-25 mpg freeway. of course once you put an offroad exhaust on, it's not crippled in any way.
You're underestimating the NSX. Altough it doesn't have lots of hp's the chassis is superior compared to many sports cars (yes Corvette included). On Nürburing the NSX-R laps the same time as the Corvette C6 which has well over 100hp's more than the NSX-R. And let's be sensible and compare apples to apples. S2000 is in a totally different price range than the Corvette, not mentioning the others cars that Kai listed.
im not comparing the s2000 to the vett. im just letting you know, that any american rwd car has a rearend that wont screw up at 120mph. the s2000 will start hopping, literally the rearend will start hopping around 120-130mph.
the nsx-R isnt available for public purchase from what i understand. and the one that is available for purchase can barely keep in front of a mustang in a straight line, around the bendies it will win, but that's what the corvette is for. you can get a z06 for the price on an nsx
Mazda is actually Japanese. Has been since 1920, and ford only started out investing 59 years later. They still only just about own a controlling interest in it. The MX5 was still built in Japan, and designed by....the japanese. And this was before ford took a controlling stake, too.
What you did was a bit like saying Volvo, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover are all American :D
As for the NSX vs Corvette:
NSX = 292hp, 1320kg (221bhp per ton)
C6 = 400hp, 1441kg (277bhp per ton)
56bhp per ton more than the NSX then. Thats not a lot. And i find it hard to believe that the Corvette beats the NSX. Theres also the following to consider:
1) Fuel Economy
2) Interior
3) Build Quality
Libertysyclone - actually, i have respect for the American V8's, but putting them in a JDM car is just wrong. Just seems completely 'wrong'. Blasphemous. I mean, anyone who put, say, a Toyota 1UZ-FE into a Chevrolet would get stoned to death!
The reason i dont have a problem them going in Commodores is because...Holden is part of GM...like Vauxhall :p
Oh and btw, the pontiac solstice....introduced in 2004...Mazda MX5 was introduced in 1989...Mazda RX7 was introed in 1979 and the Honda S2000 in 1999....so the pontiac is a bit late to the game :)
Also:
Pontiac Solstice = 177hp (N/A model)
Honda S2000 = 240hp (N/A model)
So there, the Pontiac is beaten by the S2000 it competes with in that regard.
In addition, the Solstice weighs 1305kg and the Honda is only 1276kg.
I've been waiting for this: PWNED :D
So close, but no cigar. And definitely a cuban for honda :)
NSX-R was available in the US for a small $464k and yes it did well against other cars of higher HP, but it doesn't hold a candle to the C6 Z06, you know the old pushrod motor and the rear leaf spring suspension that seems to be the best bang for your buck as far as sports cars go....
Cost of the NSX in 1991=$60k USD
Cost of the NSX in 1998=$84k USD
Cost of the 2007 C6 Z06=$65k
Cost of the 2004 C5 Z06=$52k
I never compared the S2000 to the corvette I compared it to the Pontiac Solstice Turbo.
Dont forget...the price of the Corvette elsewhere in the world, is far, FAR higher than in the US. Here, for example, it'll set me back the same price, as a BMW M6...and i know what i'd rather have :p
All of my comparisons are based on cost.
S2000 and the Solstice turbo are within $2-3k of each other
Mazda is a Japanese company
We will have to agree to disagree on the engine swap in my car. :)
NSX wins the interior comparison but I think a model T beats any GM vehicle before 2008.
Build quality of the C6 is one of the best GM cars that I have seen, and I would personally rank it above average.
and for fuel economy....
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...yclone/nsx.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...lone/vette.jpg
looks like the vette edges out a smaller less powerful v6 ;)
People dont buy NSX's for straight line performance, and theyre not even really that fast. This is known. Its a fun car to drive, and its zippy, handles well and is reliable. Comparing a NSX to a corvette is insane. They are FAR too different. Drive a corvette and drive a NSX, absolutely nowhere near the same. Although i never drove a corvette, i have driven a NSX, and its not like a rocket or anything, but it sure handles awesome.

Mazda is a Japanese company
[/QUOTES] Since when? Doesn't ford own mazda?!? and ford ain't no japanese company....
when did this thread turn out to be who is better than who. There are allot of home grown powerplants that outclass allot of other manufacturers. There are also allot of outbuilt powerplants that outperform some of the home grown power plants.
The ls series is superior to weight and reliability to most other engines in its class. I personally prefer the LT1 and the LT6, but thats because of my personal reasoning. The modular engines who shall remain nameless put out more hp and torque that some of their Bavarian counterparts. I think it all comes down to preferance. As for comparing the base pontiac with an s2000, thats just wrong. How about comparing it to the gxp model thats closer to the price range but is cheaper than the s2000 by at least 4k, how about comparing their torque output per rpm? 260hp out of a 2L not enough? How about remaping their ecu for about 300 and matching torque, and you don't have to buzz around @ 9k to make the power either. Certain modular engines won wards awards for year and year after their release, they were good enough to be used in super cars such as the koinesegg ccx? But lets not go there. There is a chevy inline 6 that makes 300ho out of its 4.2L revs up to 7k and is as smooth as butter, too bad its in a truck, put that engine in a lighweight car and watch it fly.
you guys cry handling, we have curvy roads here too, the us was not built out of lego.
No - ford doesnt own ALL of mazda, just a 33.9% controlling interest. The company was founded in Japan and is still based there. Vehicles are still mostly manufactured there. It's run by the Japanese.
Volvo for example, is owned by ford technically, but they were always a swedish company, and they still build their cars in sweden, with swedish workers, and have a swedish R&D department.
Same with Jaguar, Range Rover, Land Rover etc...
mazdas are generally modeled after ford cars.
mazda 3 = focus
mazda tribute = escape
mazda 6 = ford taurus
etc etc etc
hell, i can go buy parts for those cars at a ford dealership. the way i see it, if they are the same cars, they are the same company. ther for mazda is basically ford.
They're NOT the same though, are they?
They're just sharing from a common parts source. They're NOT part of the Ford group, therefore they're NOT Ford.
By your reckoning, a Lotus Elise is really just a Proton. Or a Toyota.
Kai is right here,
The mazda 3 and the focus share about 10% of the same parts, actually the Volvo SC40 and the 3 share a lot more parts (mostly suspension)
Tribute and escape are very similar.
the Mazda 6 was out in Japan 1 year before here and Ford didnt "adopt" the platform for another 2 years.
I have an idea; STFU.

The Vectra is just the "new" Pontiac G8....the shape has been out for a while now. However, we have them from 1.8 litre to V6 in regular Vectra trim, the V8 is just called the VXR8...
The plastics quality is a lot better probably :D
That 2.0L lump is just a completly forged ecotec. They make 260hp in turbo spec in the us and 260lb of tourque.
Some tuners have gotten around 250ish hp naturaly aspirated by uping the compression ratio.
Usualy a quick ecu flash gives you around 300hp in those engines.
To quote a jurnalist reviewing the pontiac solstice, its a 4cyl that dosent know its not a v8. It makes plenty of tourque down low due to the high comp even though its turbocharged, its also direct fuel injected in the newer revisions.
great lump.
Interesting, I know that the 2.0 turbo in my car is held back a fair bit (175bhp) because vauxhall did not want the 2.0turbo sri being faster than the gsi (3.2v6). There is a tuning company called bsr which is big in the saab scene which can take that to 215Hp / 330Nm with there stage 1 remap or up to 233Hp / 370Nm with stage 3 which involves a new exhaust and injectors & remap.
The car is a 2007 vauxhall vectra sri nav xp 2.0turbo. Ill post up a few inside pics soon so you guys in the states can compare to the pontiac
here they are, I know its not a 600bhp Impreza lol but its the best car I have ever owned and I love it:)

hahah i drive a 1996 ford windstar mini van with no hubcaps and the middle seat taken out. also i went and got some windows tint lv 2 1/2 so my green mini van will have dark ass windows and one more thing i bought a furry strearing wheel cover so it feels great on the hands, btw this van was a gift from my mom. i live in pa and had to drive to fort bragg nc, so i didnt want to drive my 1990 camaro witch is bad on gas so she gave me this van. its doing good with 200.000 miles and a bad axle lol.
that looks more like the vxr8 (holden monaro) over here. different league to my wee vectra

any wonder I thought the g8 looked better than my vectra lol, This is its equivalent over here.
gallag man I love the exterior of your car, but the interior has GM written all over it :X
That G8 interior is probably a package worth probably 3 grand extra.....the Vectra's is basic. Why compare the two?the G8 is sort of nice though.
I am at work atm, but I just bought a 08 Jetta SE White Color. Its just the standard 2.5L 177HP VW Engine. Its got enough punch for me when I want to pass, but more importantly its smooth, and the cabin is quiet which is something I really wanted. I got a White, with tan Leather, and a sunroof. I will try and snap some pictures off tomorrow. Its a big step up from my 04 Toyota Corolla CE car. I love this car. VW might have have made itself a new customer if this car treats me well.
That car looks to be fwd. The g8 is a rwd sedan. The car looks more like the Chevy Malibu under the skin and the interior isn't far off as far as design. The Malibu here is offered with the same direct injected v6 for the ss version. Quite quick for such a low priced sedan. The Malibu is the same car as the opel vectra.
The g8 is based on the Australian holden, so is the vauxhall 4door sedan.
They outright own it, FYI. They however keep their in house designers in Sweden. However the mechanicals of modern saab are either American (chevy) or German (opel). Their v6 engines used in their suv's are American designed units, possibly exported. Their 4cyl lumps are opel designed ecotec engines that have been stroked. The saab areo turbo is simply a stroked 2.0L opel/chevy lump now displacing 2.2L and has no relation to the 2.2L purpose built economy version sold in the us, besides the heads and pistons.
The steering wheel in the G8 is awful.
If I got one, I'd swap it with a Momo that has an airbag right away.
91' Nissan 240sx SE S13
Had this car for 3 years, started to work on it the very first day I got it and the past year had been just sitting the way it is right now, its long way from finished but there is simply no money to be spend on it right now...

looks good, its a shame that opel, vauxhall arent renowned for their reliability, especially when the owner "rags its guts out"
im a member of a fast car forum and most vauxhalls / opel's get stick
i owned a 340 odd bhp impreza, went like hell - 0 to 60mph in like 4 seconds, faster than a m3 i had. basic interior but wasnt without its own faults. would be great if someone could come up with a german car with jap power and german reliability. but i guess you cant have it all ways :(
Nice to have another S chassis owner here :) Not a fan of body kits or in the Nissan world "aero" but thats not a bad looking S13.
I have three cars, I don't have a picture uploaded of my 98 cavalier.
But my other two are
87 Honda Civic - This car is the backup and its rougher than that as someone ran a stop sign in front of my wife two weeks ago, he has no insurance so that sucks. Its got 247,000 miles on the car, but is on its third engine...these old carburated engines just weren't the best.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1.../IMGP0088e.jpg
93 Cavalier - Is sitting right now with a blown head gasket, which is expected its got 184,000 miles on it. It has had an alternator and water pump replaced and thats it in its life(I bought it off my dad who bought it new). Its been an awesome car, but I haven't had the time to fix it so its been down for about a month now.

Lost Prophet that's a really clean car you have there. How long have you owned it/how much did you get it for?
First a Mitsubishi Lancer 1.3 with 55kw, now i own a mitsubishi carisma with 62kw, i´ve sold the Lancer with 200.000km and it hasn´t got any failures, but i want less km, an the carisma is a grannycar, first hand car with an automatic gearbox....(it isn´t what i want, but its a car......)
holy crap id kill myself if i lived in europe, everyone drives a damn hatchback :X
NickS: We Europeans say the same about you Americans - "How on Earth can you drive those giant & tasteless fuel-thirsty cruising ships".
:D
:owned:
BTW: What's so wrong on a hatchback??
as my friend pointed out the other day. alot of the shows on tv seem to be showing more and more european cars running around. so i can only guess thats changing?
on looks, there are a few american cars i like, mustang gt for example. but i say the same about 95% of french cars. Citroen and Peugoets new models are .... well, ugly! Renault arent TOO bad

Remember, hatchbacks = practical. Estate Cars = Practicality +
There isnt the market for fuel thirsty SUV's and 'pick ups' that there is there. Remember, fuel is $11.50 a gallon. And we pay Road tax.
Nothing wrong with a Golf GTi though....you can go to the nurburgring with a chest of drawers in the boot :D
Here is my daily driver, i am quitting the Honda game though, too many thieves, haters, ricers that give Honda's a bad name and every punk kid trying to race at a red light, plus I'm almost 21 and I really do not have the time to tinker around, although I am in the market for an Infinity G37 Type S

Get yourself a Mk3 Supra - RWD, I6, Turbocharger, LSD, Nice Interior, no semblance of riceyness :D
im not really into older generation cars, i know how to fix cars but its just a pain in the behind, i've went to the International Auto Show this year and they had some great cars. The G37 really caught my eye as well as a GTR. Too bad the GTR is only available in limited quantities.
i know i sat in one at the International Auto Show and fell in love with it, it is so nice and comfortable.
plus its a rebadged skyline lol
The Mk4 was brilliant, technically (2JZ, V160 Getrag etc), although i think the Mk4 should have looked more like the Lexus SC300....they do grow on you after a while. I hated them, but after a year or so, they're not as bad as i thought they were.
Mmmm. The A5 is full of cake & win.
Too big though :(
Audi don't really appeal to me, sure they come turbo..but its baby turbo, they seem more of a parent kinda car, now an R8 there is an Audi that we can talk about
after many vehicles owned and even bought n sold, jap (performance) and german cars stand out. i know some italian cars have rep but i've never bought or owned an expensive one.
my realistic dream car is an Audi RS4. i had the pleasure of hammering one about a year ago, for a whole HOUR - had an embarrassing moment though, i stalled it at some lights whilst some girls were looking at me, HA.
besides the quality you get with a german vehicle, it had all the extra's you could want, everything looked good inside aswell as the outside .... and the performance, yummmm. i've owned a BMW M3 and a 342bhp impreza which hit 60mph in just 4.3 seconds but the RS4 was like the performance from the scooby and the quality from the M3 and then some. but for 60k here in the uk, or 130k in the US, you'd expect that. bet its cheaper in the US, you dont have a UK government screwing you for lower and higher rate tax, arg
I meant in terms of being able to drive it on British Roads, park it, FUEL it...the oil refinery strikes and the 2p increase in the fuel duty is going to mean fuel at $15 a gallon by the end of the year.
A5 competitor for the M3 ? You're kidding me, right ?
The A5 is in the same class as the E92 3er, but not even the S5 can comment against the M3, it competes with the 335i E92 and if you ask me or many others, the 335i is the better car. Maybe the RS5 when and if they will launch it can argue against the M3.
Oh yeah, and the A5 is big, but then again most of the mid sized coupes are now getting bigger.
To answer the topic, right now, Pheonix Gelb(yellow for those of you that do not speak german) E46 M3. And the other one which I will not say what it is because it's a connoisseur's car ;)
