Thanks. I'v tried alot of X58 mb's, and always ends up back with this old GB X58 Extreme. UD7 rev 1 and a Classified are the only other boards that could (almost) match its bclk/stability. I also belive that the cpu is what limits max bclk, as long as the mb can "keep up" with the cpu.

As for low GFLOPS, heres my experience with a gulf 3003Bxxx (sold now):
I had no problem running LinX at about 4.6 with it, but GFLOPS was low (40-50) and it was not stable at the same settings when testing with Prime. So I didnt enter it in this club as I figured there was something wrong with LinX and Gulfs.

Been making the most of the freezing cold we've had here. Anyway, lynnfield time!

Board - Same old P55-UD5
Ram - G.skill Eco c7
CPU - i5 760 Batch info to follow - lost the bit of paper I wrote it on :lol:. Its an early one though.

CPU limit was 4445mhz on air with 8c ambient. Finally watercooled it (simple loop - Supreme LT, Magicool 360XT and EK DCP2.2) and took it out to the workshed for some -4c ambient :).

4.5ghz was quite easy so I decided to try and max out efficiency. Early runs were doing 58-59gflops, but with some tweaking and ramrunning 2050mhz 8-9-8-1T I managed to average over 60.5gflops. Pretty impressive :). Had to run with all eist and c1e off as single core turbo mode was kicking in and boosting it up to 25x at idle. Need to move to 21x multi to move higher on cpu speed, this cpu clocks better with eist enabled. Problem is that with this cpu I cant get the bclk over 225. 226 boots but isnt stable, 227 wont post. Swap to the 530 and I get 238, with the 550 it can do 244. Definitely a cpu limit. Anyway, 4.5ghz high efficiency screenshot below:

So with that said lets push the cpu a bit :). Ram down to 8x and some bclk testing got me to 1.58vddr, 1.38vtt 6-8-6-1T @ 225bclk / 1800mhz. Very good result - the clarkdales cant run these same eco sticks at cas 6 at all.

And yes you guessed it...thats 21 x 225 for 4725mhz :). Second screenshot shows voltage under load - monstrous vdroop on this P55-UD5. Running standard LLC - level 1 and level 2 limit the overclock and give me more heat from the board. Just cranking the volts to counteract the drop. Still its getting close to 0.15v idle to load....

3x1gb kit loose timings, MSI XPower, Water with some AC. Very fast run but at this vcore using water I dont think I will try my 6gb kit, would take 1hr. 1.6+vcore :shocked:

Epic fail last night with the 950 - condensation issues. All ok, but had to quit early. 4.833 is definitely there for the taking if I can sort the condensation on the cpu block baseplate out. Worried itll soak into the cpu socket. -5c lowest temp outside last night and real bad freezing fog - it was snowing ice crystals!

Thanks donmarkoni, that pretty much ties in with those ballpark percentages, well you score a bit higher but I think some variation would be usual. Nice that you have an unlocked uncore. What do you think, maybe use that formula or something like it to give people some idea of what to expect?

EDIT: Clarkdale (i5-655k) seems to work differently.

Gautam, I don't know why there are so may low GFlops. What if you try with less memory, maybe using "all" hits the OSes resources too much. Even running 4GHz and a problem size of 6000 should hopefully give some results in the 60GFlops range with 12 threads and only take a few seconds to do 3 runs. Might also be worth checking the taskmanager to see if the CPU is being fully utilized.

Hmm... IDK about the more accurate formula, cause there are just too many variables, but in How to run LinPack stress test(LinX/IBT)properly-an explanation(maybe a guide) is pretty much explained everything that can impact the performance.

I was thinking the same today, while working :D , about the "all" button and the issues it could make when asking all memory from OS, which can start using PageFile and impair the performance. Then I checked a couple of results here and found out that "all" was not in common use for low GFLOPS runs. :shrug:

I don't know enough about Linpack to be sure, but I think it could be due to the earlier libraries, but then again it seems like those don't have such a big impact either. I can say I've never seen gflops anywhere past 50 ever, but I've never turned HT off either. We all have our standards, and for me disabling HT is the closest thing to "cheating" :p: (j/k) My chip was a junker with IMC/uncore though, but I recall pushing memory even into the 2100 range along with a ~3.8ghz uncore and still never achieved anywhere close to 50. Of course, no one else had either, so I thought nothing of it. You might have a point with the memory utilization, however, it seemed to be tradition in this thread to have the "all" button checked off...not only that, doing so is certainly more stressful. It doesn't sit well with me for lower memory utilization and HT being disabled in the name of higher GFLOPS. Regardless of the GFLOPS, enabling HT and increasing memory usage increase stress on the processor, and significantly at that. While I haven't looked into any of this at any depth, I can make a generalization and say that higher performance != higher utilization/stress. It's fairly likely that the GFLOPS being lowered by HT being enabled is due to their being so much contention between the additional threads that the overall performance just goes down. The CPU still is being taxed more heavily though, that's the nature of HT. But being taxed more doesn't necessarily mean more performance.

How do you mean it won't work? It better work, its an advertised feature of the R3E. Its listed under downloads for the R3E on Asus' support site and under the ROG R3E Downloads section. Make sure you get V1.02.25.

Just a comment, not a statement ;),

I submitted a run with HT enabled on my 980x in "Diagnostic" mode on the PC. I found that the chip went higher with HT on than with it off. As far as the Gflops issue is concerned, I'm not competent enough to "fault-find" the cause of low numbers, I just built the PC and went for it. Also, my submission was in no way a 24/7 attempt. I have run at 4.5 for long periods with no issues though.

I have TurboV EVO v1.02.25 running as well but it looks nothing like that Formula version and doesn't show any of the voltage or temp readings that version shows. I wish we could get that version sometime soon.

Oh yea, I had that working with my R3G. Its nothing too special. Just a different front end for the same app you have with all the other apps integrated into it like ProbeII etc. I'll admit it does look nice tho. I just didn't like all the other stuff installed so I removed the suite and just installed TurboV Evo

Higher memory usage actually seems beneficial to higher GFlops. It is supposed to be a stress test primarily and therefore using HT with it's lower result in GFlops is the right way IMO simply because it uses more power / generates more heat. At least in my tests it has. Typically my 860 with Linpack will run ~15% slower but use ~10% more power while using 8 threads over using 4 threads on separate physical cores with HT still enabled. IMO though it's also nice to know what sort of performance can be expected which is difficult if the resulting GFlops are skewed by bugs.


One thing i did find is that if OC'ing from Windows there is a possibility of wrong readings depending on the timer used which can result in lower than real readings when BCLK is increased. Rather than have an example showing lower clocks it is more obvious reducing BCLK as this will result in higher than real GFlops.

Example of incorrect reading using dual core with HT. BCLK dropped from 100MHz to 50MHz. In case your wondering, no I don't normally run the memory clock or BCLK that low :p:.

This chip normally overclocks nicely with pretty decent (low) volts but it seems that at 4.5GHz+ the IMC gets rather weak and quite fussy. I found it difficult to get a successful 20 run LinX. I did try to pass with HT but had no luck... perhaps too much stress for the IMC?

Now with UD4 and also air...

voltage reading is wrong in CPU-Z but ET6 shows it correct :)

What is considered max safe voltage for SB on air - for benching and for 24/7?

My retail i7 2600K (batch: L038A646) is doing 4.6GHz 1.332V load, 1.344 idle in Win, 1.35V in bios, temp in low 70s, HT on.

What type of temps are you guys with 1366 pushing past 1.4v vcore getting? What is your loop setups?

I got the ok from the wife to grab a 980x. I am trying to decide weather to go ahead and grab one now, wait for 990x, or wait for SB. My concern is paying a premium for the 980x and getting a dud chip that wont do 4500. My other concern is if I dont hurry up and get something she will come to her senses and changes her mind.

Highest bootable multi is 50, but wont load into Win even when vcore set at 1.4V in bios...i think i will settle for 4.6GHz HT on for everyday use:)

can you maybe try with higher voltage? 1.45v is ok for testing / benching ;)

if you system freeze at the bootscreen of windows you CPU can´t run that multiplier :(

Really, having a bit of a trouble here.
So...
Red for EVGA - looks ok.
Blue for Gigabyte - also ok.
Neon green (Lime) for DFI - not so bad.
Dark blue (Navy) for MSI - ???
Need something for ASUS and Foxconn...
Black is out of question, sadly, since default fonts are black.
I picked orange for ASUS for now since they used to like copper looking heatsinks, and some of their X58 boards are orange-ish.
Foxconn is a tough call since they use red and black, same as EVGA... I went for very dark grey for now, to make it at least somewhat different from black.

If some manufacturer wants to 'buy' a specific colour for them, let me know! :rofl:
