What is your highest stable settings on a QX9650 ?
What is your highest stable settings on a QX9650 ?
see this post i put up for someone else the mobo is running @1600mhz on 1305bios HERE
the cpu is diffrent but i think the setting should be the same its only you can change your multplier to any random one lol
i think from the volt settings in the images i only had to set the sb 1.5v to get it 100% stable but the load cal is needed. also i think the gtl setting is a glitch with the mobo lol but it helps
Ok.I´am om water and my Idle temp is 29-31celcius, Load temp is 60-65celcius (now) (1600x11=4400Mhz , 1.43v)
Forgive my bad english :)
So i got my G.Skill to 1066mhz. had to up the voltage to 2.1, but still got latency at arround 60. Anyone know how to get it lower.
Hey everyone – thanks to all for the info in this thread. After digging through it and gleaning a lot of info from it, I am running my E8400 at 4.05 GHz with my Corsair 1GBx2 8500C5D at a linked and synced 4-4-4-12 timings using the 1305 BIOS. My Vcore is set at 1.4250 and mem at 2.2. There is plenty of head room left, but I haven’t had time to get there yet. I don’t have the pics to prove it, but here is a little info on my memory testing.
Voltage 2.3, linked and auto, FSB 1800 MHz resulted in a 1080 MHz mem frequency (5:6 ratio). 5-5-5-15-2T. Memory scores from Everest:
Read 11019 Write 9571 Copy 7688 Latency 48.4
Voltage 2.2, linked and synced, FSB 1800 MHz = 900 MHz mem frequency. 4-4-4-12-2T. Memory scores from Everest:
Read 11208 Write 9563 Copy 7173 Latency 47.3
However, the real reason for the post is to share my water cooling experience. I am using EK water blocks on the NB, SB, and Mosfets, a Swiftech Apogee GTX on the CPU, and a Swiftech Stealth (Rev 2) on my 8800 GTS (G90). As you can guess from the pics, it was not possible to fit the graphics card into the top PCI-E x16 slot. The block on the graphics card was hitting the barb on the SB block – this was without even having a tube on the SB block. Fortunately, I am not running an SLI rig yet and the chipset supports putting the card in either of the blue slots. The pics from EvoCarlos on page 48 show much more clearance on that SB water block.
My CPU temps are a little higher than I would like, so I am curious what others are getting. I used Arctic Silver 5 on all of the water blocks. My NB and SB are lower – stock was 56 and 49; they are now 47 and 36. However, my CPU core temps idle in the high 40’s and bounce off 63 when stressing the system while OC’ed to 4.05 GHz.
As far as the loop, I will start at the lower right where the Swiftech MCP655 pump is --> CPU --> 8800 GTS --> Swiftech MCR120-QP Radiator --> NB --> Mosfet 1 (left) --> Mosfet 2 (top) --> SB --> Thermochill PA 120.2 Radiator --> Pump. The “T” right before the pump goes up to the Danger Den fill port/reservoir at the top of the case. All of the tubing is Tygon ½” ID and ¾” OD. I have thought about going with 2 loops and replacing the MCR120 with a 2-pass 120.2 radiator to see how much that would lower temps. If I do, I will post the results. Hope this helps anyone thinking about watercooling their rig.
Nice cooling Waterboy8,
What Mosfets did you use?
Also do they mount right up or did you have to modfiy them, I noticed your NorthBridge is using hold downs don't EK make a NB block for this board?
Edit: think I found them,
NorthBridge EK-NB/SB5
Mosfets EK-Mosfet ASUS 3a
Thanks....The mosfets are the ASUS 3a blocks. The NB is actually the NB/S-Max. They installed perfectly - I didn't have to do anything to make them fit.
Thanks too, because I'm thinking of doing this since I have most of the parts already.
Hej:) and my cooling looks so:)

BIOS 1501 to test ;)
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...rmula/1501.zip
hi guys, i'm new here, here's my S2F
http://noypiwebmasters.com/test/pc003.jpg
I'm still upgrading my system, I recently bought Thermalright IFX14 and the 2 fans for the mosfet cant be included when I use my new hsf. Is there a way to cool down the chipset of nvidia?? or do you have any helpful links for lowering the heat on the chipset of S2F. thanks
1501 is out. Got this ftp link from the Asus forums:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...rmula/1501.zip
Installed 1501 OK. Did not notice any changes yet from 1401.
fingers crossed it fixes my problems.... I still get lockups when watching videos and playing games with SLI enabled.
Nice rig seba....and thanks for the temps. I am going to redo a few things on my setup next week and see if I can get them lower.
Yeah nice seba84,
in the middle of putting mine together and ordering stuff, I have extra pumps and radiators so I'm using 2 separate loops blue for the GPU & CPU and green for the board.
This is my custom res I just made now need to make another for the board cooling on the formula.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1972/d3or4.png
so......
this thread is gonna move to the cooling section? j/k
im gonna post mine 2morrow and my uber stock cooling thats getting uber low temps
(for stick cooling) =P
looked through most the posts,
Hows the QX9650 do on this board 4.2Ghz pretty easy on water?
USFORCES@ nice rig:clap: original also have top from the graphic card put together with the water block:)
So my GSkill are working but i am wondering something. Directions said 5-5-5-15 for 1066mhz. yet everest adds 2 other options, TRC-48t, TWR-13. Would it be a good idea to put these in, the board has them running at a fast speed, but maybe that's not a great idea.
have I to you the question, the animation bios works you?
there is about the name STRIKER2.gif with the log ROG the file gif after unpacking bios:) but the animation does not work while starting the computer:confused:

DO anyone know whats the new thing in 1501,
Does it change any thing.......
 enlighten me plz.. :)
EEEEH why does it say Striker II EXTREME BIOS 1501 ??????????????????
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...map&mapindex=0
LOL it's just a typo. I have installed it and it works OK.
GOd not again, help mepls, my board wont post again, it says "code init" on the lcd but wont post, what should i do, im going crazy with this board
fixed, one of the ram was partially out of its socket, put it back in no prob no more
Had a issue today. There was some irratic mouse movement. I have a new Microsoft Laser Mouse and it said there was a signal strength issue. Yet when i open mouse control panel the battery and signal strength are fine. I'm thinking either there is a issue with the compatability of the mouse or just some random issue. The issue seems to have gone away for now.
I have uninstalled the drivers.
Updated uCodes to add E0/M0 steppings, improved compatibility with EAH3870X2, improved C1/SpeedStep thermal policy behaviours and many minor changes as well.
Bios 1601 - loaded fine
Now Q6600 @ 3.7ghz - temps 42 deg - up to low 50's 3 dmark 06
CPU 1.375V
Mem 2.1v
cpu gtl +30
nb gtl +30
Seems ok to me : )
1601 beta released? Great! Thanks PMP~
I experienced some strange behaviour when using 1501:
Unlike 1305->1401 (getting better in oc), previous oc trial's combination of voltages did not work, meaning stepping backwards.
Also when the oc does not post, it reboot, right? But 1501 gave me un-predicted behaviour after failure of post. Sometimes back to previous settings of successful post (e.g. 400Mhz x 9 = 3.6G at E8400), but sometimes it put me back to 3.0G stock speed. It's kinda strange for me.
Hope 1601 works great with oc'ing!~~~~
Hi guys,
I have small problem with packing up everything in Striker II Formula.
Since today there are 2x8800GTX and... PICE Abit wireless card
Normally Abit is sitting in second blue PCIE slot where second 8800GTX should be.
I have checked the SLI but when I put wireless card into middle ( white ) pcie slot - it doesn't work :(
Anyone knows how to enable this middle pcie slot?
Diode is not blinking seems there is no power running to the card.
Any experiences with this slot?
hi guys, i got a question for you :) just got a striker ii formula a few weeks ago and i've been having fun OC'ing my E8400 (and my two 8800GT's in SLI). i'm a bit worried though about my Vcore voltage. i haven't done any volt mods or anything but it shows up as over 1.8V (sometimes near 1.9V!), and my 3.3V voltage shows as around 3.9V. temperatures and stability is fine, and i'm just using stock fan to get it to 3.74GHz (from 3GHz). now, what i'm thinking is, that the voltage reported is erroneous. how likely is it that a bunch of the sensors on the motherboard are broken? or is there probably really 1.9V on my cores?
temperatures never exceed 75 under full 2h orthos load, and it never errors out then either. hope you guys can give me some of your insights :) i should probably mention that Vcore voltage shows as very high when the E8400 isn't even overclocked either. (at stock speed it shows as about 1.8V also)
I highly doubt the sensors are wrong. What programs did you use to measure.
Also the voltage can be erratic if you dont manually set it accordingly,
and seing that you are getting up to 75c at a mere 3.74ghz I'd say it is indeed your voltage increasing.
Cease and Desist immediatly. Unless you know the dangers, understand electromigration, and the effects of heat and want damage to occure then you seriously want to get that voltage to a safe level, no chip, not even 65nm should have 1.8v put into unless strictly for benching and with adequate (extreme) cooling.
You may be lucky and find it is the program your using, not made after the e8400, then
find another program, and you are good to go. But if you are unlucky, then you may be in danger of
damaging your chip
Read guides if your not familiar with overclocking.
The board has loads of quirks/qualms and strange things happen with these nvidia chipsets, which is why it would not surprise me that your Vcore is being incorrectly adjusted as you overclock if it is still set to auto.
first of all, thanks for the quick reply.
i measured it with all programs i can think of. cpuid hwmonitor, speedfan, everest etc... all latest version.
i have now set my fsb to 1333 again (stock), and manually set vcore voltage in bios to 1.15V and it booted fine, yet, all these programs now show my Vcore voltage to be around 1.65 (which i'm pretty sure it has been since i got it from the shop). any idea how that can be?
it may be worth mentioning that the 3.3V voltage is not reported by EVEREST nor by HWMonitor, is reported by speedfan as 0.0 (which must mean it can't get the value?) and shows in the bios as 3.9V... this lead me to believe at least that sensor is faulty, since apparently EVEREST and speedfan have problems with it... but then again, i may be wrong.
ps. wolfdale is 45nm.
I realise wolfdale is 45nm, thats why I said not even 65nm, as 65nm safe daily voltage is higher being a bigger process.
Dw about the 3.3, thats not whats going to kill CPU, when in bios, what does bios report in the HW monitor? as your vcore?
Just a thought but try Asus PC probe, probably was supplied on your drivers disk.
Also, what BIOS are you running?
thanks for the quick reply again, bios says 1.65V ish for Vcore voltage. bios version is 1401.
i will try ASUS PC Probe now and get back to you in a few minutes.
edit:
Vcore shows as 1.73V in ASUS PC Probe, +12V as 15.49V, +5V as 5.07V, +3.3V as 4.08V, all others look ok. the cpu temperature meter seems bugged, since often it reports 255 degrees celcius (lol). (CoreTemp shows both cores as around 32 degrees C stably now, under no load)
Ok I've built this PC as in my sig a few days ago. No problems whatsoever except that updating the BIOS from 0902 to the 1501 hosed my freshly installed Windows XP (BSOD's to registry errors). Anyway since I've put a TRUE black 120 on this Striker II Formula my CPU stays cool (32C idle - according to BIOS and RealTemp), but the NB and SB don't get much airflow and get REAL HOT. They both get 80C idle! I noticed this since I started OC-ing my E8400 and couldn't get it stable, even at 3.4GHz. No wonder since I was priming and the NB reached 105C(!) and the PC froze ofcourse.
Today I have moved one of my VGA's to the white slot to make room for a 80mm fan which now is blowing full speed at the NB and SB and now the NB is 61C idle and the SB is 64C idle. But now this silent PC has become unbearable with the loud 80mm fan. Do you guys have problems with these chips and what have you done to lower the temps except putting waterblocks on them ofcourse?
BTW this 1501 BIOS is a bit quirky since it sometimes doesn't remember my manually set FSB and then resets to default and also if I manually put the memory to 1066Mhz it sometimes reverts back to 666(?) after a reboot, and I have PC8500's. And in one case I had to set the CPU multiplier back to 9x in the BIOS since it was at 6x. Do you guys have these same symptoms with 1501 and have these been fixed in 1601?
Well looks like 1501 didn't like my PC... I prepared the BIOS for the update to 1601 by loading defaults in the BIOS, and then it froze while booting in XP, tried everything, clearing CMOS and such, was no way to boot in XP, Vista did work though.
I've updated the BIOS to 1601, reinstalled XP and now running 3.6GHz at stock Voltage, SB and NB now 80C idle and cooled by the 80mm fan @7V, still high, but it's working. And BIOS now remembers correctly my unlinked FSB(1600) and memory settings (1066).
Sorry for bing lazy but has there been a bios that fixes the media player issue??? My computer runs awesome except for this one issue does anyone know if this has been addressed??????
Well I understand the frustration with noise. It seems that i can't escape that either, more so cause it's the summer. My video cards get to 100c when playing some intensive games. I've noticed alot less heat thus fans can be turned down durring the cooler months. But heat and humidity doesnt help much with this board. I'm planning on replacing the cooling on the video cards which should help. the intake fans on my case make noise. But the rest of the fans dont make much noise. I got a fan on the chipsets. I guess it helps cause my temps are in the 50's. Never tested without, so no idea.
Seriously the only way I found to keep this board cool was have the CPU and GFX card on liquid so as to stop those two major
components dumping any heat into the case, I had loads of crossflow from lots of S-FleX 1600rpm (120mm)...
And even with all of that I still managed to melt a nice hole about 1 inch diameter under one of the
mosfet coolers...
Still waiting for my RMA, I sent away for that OVER 2 MONTHS AGO.....
I'm soo annoyed I hardly want to even think about this board, and no more Asus or Gigabyte boards for me
time to get something different.
hey matrix, although the stock nb and sb HS is not that good,
they are not as bad as in your case!
Before changing to HR-05 IFXs, stock nb/sb hs still give me less than 60C without fans...
In your case, it may be possible to improve by removing the whole stock
nb/sb heatsink from the mobo and REPLACE the thermal interface material
(TIM) which cost you around ten bucks... I heard many cases that the stock
TIM added by asus has already harden and even detached from either side
(chips / HS) in DAY 0~ of coz an ultimate solution may be get them
replaced by some BIGGER chipset HS lolz....
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/100_3814.jpg
These give me 42°C and 34°C on NB and SB respectively when idle on 4.7G~
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...hk/4700sso.png
First of all, using stock fan to oc is not that good I think.
Second, 1.58V in CPU-Z already bring my E8400 to 4.7G~
When I first start OCing, it only needs 1.2V to reach 3.75G
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...vhk/OC3750.jpg
How come yours use 1.8-1.9V? It's abnormal!!!! Be careful~

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes I was thinking of replacing the TIM, I still have some Arctic Silver 5, and also OCZ Freeze here to use, so I have to do that in a while I guess.
And yes replacing the stock nb/sb hs by HR-05 IFXs would be even better :) But I think that it won't fit here, I also have a TRUE (black), I use push-pull and also have SLI so I don't think I have enough room for it, and I haven't even installed the X-Fi card in the only PCI slot left, so even less room if I install the X-Fi, see picture:
http://matr1x.nl/IM000179_800.jpg
Do you think I can still fit HR-05 IFXs?
Also what brand is that mosfet hs you use?
And BTW nice OC! :)
Hey guys, I am new to overclocking Intel's and its been about 5 years since I overclocked. I am having trouble with my bios not booting with what i changed, it just boots with no overclocking, if i change the FSB and "save and exit" it boots as if i didnt change it.
Also i would like to know a baseline to start with the voltages. i havnt seen anyone on here with a QX6800 i got it very cheap any hints and help would be great. oh i am on aircooling for now. waiting for more parts to my liquid cooling to come in.
hey
as for overclocking what are you trying to get
what is the core speed/multy/vid
have a look @ my posts on page 46-47 they may help a bit :)
as for the saveing isue i had this same problem
it started with bios 1401 ever since it was loaded it just guffs out on save
its seams to as tho its a bois issue even going back to 907 bios it still plays up i give up with it i do no that my cpu will save @4ghz from 2.4 1st time but if i try 3ghz no save and it defaults all the memory settings
and one thing i did notice that before i went to 1401 when changing cpu speed it came up on screen NEW CPU DETCTED but now i have to reset as it wont boot then it goes about the right way try'd 1601 bios and have to say i cant get 4.5 as i did with 1301
also i just like to say this mobo SUCKS yet again will a bios that works ever be released??
RANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ROTF::ROTF::ROTF::ROTF::ROTF:
i was looking at hitting 4.-4.5ghz when my the rest of my water blocks come in. so for now i was thinking with the ocz cooler 3.5-3.7 should be ok.
right now stock she sits at 2.9 multi is 11,
I tried saving it the other day and it changed the multi to 14 setting it too i think 3.7ghz(i didnt even touch the thing) but it only stayed like that for 2 or 3 boots and then back down to 11. weird
this is everything set to auto. just to show you what im starting at:
Forget about changing the multi, for best performance change the FSB, and you might have to change the voltages for the CPU instead of leaving them on auto, and also use Everest for accutane readings, i have noticed CPUz and HWMonitor dont show the right voltages with this MB

i think you missed what we both said the bios wont even save the settings this is well before oc fail. :)
it looks like people have answered your questions while i was away lol
also i agree with cpu-z fails @ cpu vcore readings and with the change fsb instead of multy nb and sb and cpu volts with all need ajusting for 3.5-3.7 :)
i found out that >1.8volts to my q6600 is not good lol is was a bit smelly still working @ the moment lol
ahh i must off mist that post found it now and try'd to install the 1601 bois with AWD it has fixed the saving issue but it dont boot @ 4.5 even with the cpu @1.75 volts as with bios 1305 i had 1.68v and 4.5 its odd keeps poping up BSD memory mangment with the ram @ link'd and sink'd 500mhz 5-5-5-15-2t 2.2v
i give up i dont think i will ever buy an asus mobo thats nforce chipset again its nice but to many problems :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:shakes::shakes::shakes:
Do you really need 4.5GHz to play games and you are not satisfied?
any new bios 1601 sux big time
freeze sound . pc wont start
Well I decided to get the Evga 780i FTW instead of a Formula and water cool it, since it has some nice options like comos reset ect, like the striker does when overclocking it's a must! Also 8 Phase and VDroop Control :)
I've had 7 Asus boards 3 of them Striker's and thought I'd give Evga a try hope I like it as much.
I got my Striker II formula just a few weeks ago.
I've been playing with some functions in the BIOS since then but when overclocking I'm constantly encountering the samen problem: NB overheat.
Now I know this board get's hot but even though I've installed both chipset fan things and have those both running at max speed I can't get the NB down tot normal temps.
I was wondering if any of you guys found a decent (and not to expensive) solution to cool your boards and then overclock a bit more. As I really want this bord to do 430+ FSB wich it should be able to if I get the cooling sorted out.
I would recommend resitting the heatsink thats on the board, remove the thermal paste completely and use something like OCZ Freeze if you read back on this thread you will see other people that have done the same to lower the temperatures on the NB and SB, for me it worked like a charm, my NB without a fan doesn't go passed 52c, and dont use a conductive thermal paste :p:
any new bios ?? nothing in asus site

i have problems overclocking my q9450 i can take it to 3.6ghz and it can be prime stable for over 8hours but as soon as i run games or browse the net my rig locks up
Im using the Scythe Orochi Ten Heatpipe CPU cooler but it wont even work at 3.0ghz nither
Im using 1101 bios and stock voltages apart from the cpu witch is set at 1.25volts and i dont know what to do.

Anyone know if the latest bios is stable?
I need some GTL help. I've mainly OC'd dual cores so i haven't paid to much attention to GTL settings. I've been pretty successful OC'ng without knowing how to properly set GTL's. I would just use what others used with similar settings to mine. It's time for me to stop faking and learn more about GTL's. I've been googling GTL and searched here but all the guides ive found are a little confusing. For the most part the settings used in the guides were different than the GTL settings on the S2F. Most had completely different entries in the bios for GTL's, and the few 780i guides i found were reference boards and they had multiple GTL settings...settings for each core. The S2F only has the 1 CPU setting and then the NB setting. . so could somebody please explain to me how to come up with the correct GTL settings for the Striker 2 Formula? I'll be reading thru this thread again in case i missed something and searching the net in the mean time. Thanks For the help!
This is what I did.
I started overclocking by raising the FSB.
The moment I had a no boot, I raised one click each one volt, then I checked all combination of volts, until I had a boot.
In case I still had no boot I checked raising volts, one by one and in cominations, by two, three clicks etc.
This is what I found about GTLref.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...postcount=1095
I also started by reading about gtlref. I think it was Anandtech that gave us some formulas? They do not work anyway on this mobo.
The only formula that worked for me was "try and error". I systematically raised one two three clicks each volt alone, then in combinations, to see which gives me a boot.
During the boot sequence I watch the init back panel readings. They change when we are close to a boot. This indicates that the last time I raised the right volt. It helps a lot. At some point I had to raise GTLrefs because even raising a lot the CPU vcore or any other volt had no effect. Try this trick yourself. Actually it will not take a long time. This way you see how raising volts interact to give you a boot. Then you may keep the boot volt settings you found and reduce the FSB a bit to get a stable boot.
Something strange I noticed is that increasing the FSB is proportional to the vcore, even if I keep the CPU frequency low by reducing the multiplier.
For example with my Q6700, I need 1.48v vcore to get a stable 420x8=3360 and only 1.3v vcore to get 337.5X10=3375 (FSB 1350).
I cannot understand why. Why do I need a lot more vcore, when I raise the FSB, for the same CPU frequency ? Any ideas?
anybody here has a before and after temp readings on their nb/sb after applying a new tim? Many thanks!
@Marios
Hmm.. that is kinda weird.
Did anyone have this board shutting down suddenly?
If I start FurMark then within 5 seconds *BAM* just a complete power-off... this is with bios 1305.
I haven't used FurMark much in the last few months, just added a side-fan to my GTX280 to see how much it helps reducing temps and keeping my ears from going nuts :D
This shutdown is completely without warning, but like I said I can repeat it at will with FurMark.
This happens with the cpu overclocked to 4,5GHz but also at the stock 3,33GHz (e8600)
It shouldn't be the PSU, it's a Silverstone Strider 750W modular, should be enough for 1 GTX280, 5 harddisks and an overclocked e8600 right?
I'm kind of puzzled here... guess it'll ruin my sunday but screw it I want to know wtf is going on...
I'm going to try to flash 1602, hope that can save me from this horrible situation.
-edit-
Found the solutioin, although bios updating didn't help, it helped to pull the plugs on my OTHER 4 harddisks (only the windows disk is connected now) and trying FurMark... can't get it to crash anymore :D
Anyway I'm afraid the 10PIN SATA on my Silverstone PSU might not be up to the job, 5 HDDs and 1 DVD-RW...
Do those things eat so much power then? Anyone know?
Looks like I'm gonna have to do some rewiring....again :(
How about the ampère ( A ) on the Silverstone Strider 750W modular?
This probably tells you more than me... it's just strange that when I connect the harddrives to the SATA wire which has 6 connectors, and then run FurMark, the system powers off... It's not like I'm running SLI or whatever...
Does anyone have a successful overclock with a q6600 and this board? Any bios above 1303 and this board seem to crap out on me. I can't even overclock to 333mhz fsb with latest bios. As soon as windows loading screen appears, bam bsod. I realize everyone is having a good success rate with the dual cores. However I can't overclock with any bios above 1303 for some reason. Ever since they implemented nvidia fix in bios, overclocking is impossible. They sure fixed it lol.
I used to run the 1305 BIOS with my Q6600 but never really managed anything stable over 340MHz... I was able to get the system to post at 455MHz FSB but it was not stabel enough to boot windows.
I gave the Q6600 to my nephew and with my E8400 I can push the FSB as high as 500MHz.
Best regads

Hmm today I tested something which I feared was true... I have a 12cm fan on a zalman bracket these days, blowing on my GTX280 and my SB.
When putting pressure on the SB sink with my finger the temperature goes from 62 to 52 idle... so I guess I have some reseating to do :D
Probably one of those foam path Asus puts on the sinks that pushes the sink slightly up... I just know I won't be ready in 5 minutes with this.
Nice job Garrett :) Well I need watercooling on my chip's thats for sure... Gonna happen some time next month I guess. Let us know how the reseating went, and take pics :D
I was just being lazy looks like it. I got 3.0ghz stable after a couple more changes. This is definitely not an auto board lol. Am using 1601 now with no issues. Does anyone else have freezing issues with 1602?
